February 11 has such a nice ring to it. Despite the mid-winter blahs, which many of you have shared with me, there’s some hot news that should energize you this Monday.
Let’s start in The Big O…Orlando. Winter Park, actually. NBC affil WESH, part of the Hearst group, has a new hire. Now working for CSD SUZANNE GRETHEN is PAUL CHAPLIN. He’s their new nightside Writer/Producer, making the switch from CBS’ WFRV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. OK, let’s just see how that’s working for him. Temps about 10pm on Sunday night: Orlando: 64 degrees. Green Bay: -6 with a wind chill of –25 degrees. Oh yeah, Paul has definitely gotten himself a sweet spot. Of course, now that Paul is there, MATT HELF has finally found himself off nights and has been promoted to Director of Graphic Production. Well Dunne! You two! Great to hear. A shout-out to DON SMITH down there.
Big news from JOHN LUMA. Actually, two bits of news, both worthy of a Well Dunne! First, Mr. L is now the Creative Director of Peter Martin’s new multimedia company, LA-based United Front Media. They’re creating the NAB’s new yearlong campaign to educate the 20 million households getting “antenna TV” how to convert inexpensively to digital by 2009. It’s a huge national campaign to break later this month, driven by the NAB’s 8,000-plus member stations and networks. Second, Newsweek magazine ran John’s MY TURN essay of mine in the Feb. 4 weekly edition. It should be posted on their website any second as well. It’s about a surprising experience he had late last summer – that’s all I’m going to tell ya. Look it up and enjoy it yourself.
Yep, it’s a promotion. TV One, the Maryland based cable satellite network dedicated to the African-American audience, has elevated LAURA LIPSON to VP/Marketing and Promotion. The UC Berkeley grad joined the network as Director/Marketing and Promotion just before TV One’s launch in fall 2003. She’s been doing movie promos at ABC and also directed, wrote and co-produced the film Standing on my Sisters’ Shoulders. Well Dunne! Laura.
