CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN have built an amazing operation in Miami with their 2C Media. Now they’ve added three, including the very talented LARRY WIENER. The UMass Amherst grad got his start in Boston doing a variety of TV jobs at Cablevision then jumped into promo for New England Cable News. He learned promo by writing and producing at WKRN in Nashville, WSVN in Miami (where he got promoted to Promo Manager) before jumping to LA for Fox Broadcasting as Sr. Writer/Producer On-Air Promos. He took the VP/Creative Director position at ION Media Networks and was Director Creative Services for CBS in Miami and VP Marketing and Creative Services at Tribune in Ft Lauderdale. He’s worked for Discovery and most recently was VP Creative for Eclipse Creative. His title with 2C is Creative Director. Very exciting for all involved. Well Dunne! Larry.

But wait – there’s more! BEN FRANK and MARNI WAGNER, who have both worked at 2C, were promoted. Both are now Creative Directors. Ben has a station-side background having done news and topical promos. He was a promo producer for WPLG and was at WTVJ when Chris discovered him, and the rest is, as they say, history. Ben’s work for 2C is on display for promos for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown as well as the NBC Olympics Opening ceremony promo. MARNI has worked in LA and NYC, as well as traveling as producer for long form network shows. Her latest work is the launch on CMT on Nashville.  Yes, she has a lot of awards – all deserved. Ben and Marni….VERY Well Dunne!

Former prom pro KAREN FUJI who once spun promos at WJKS in Jacksonville has a brand new diploma which has really paved the way for a new career path that she’s taken. Just this last few days, Karen got the sheepskin to show she earned a Masters degree in Educational Technology from the University of Hawaii Moana. I’m sure there were lots of happy people clapping for her and hopefully the perfect Hawaiian day was full of celebration. There is life after TV where one can use all those creative gifts. Way to go and Well Dunne! Karen.

Think About This:  “Don’t break a bird’s wings and then tell it to fly Don’t break a heart and then tell it to love. Don’t break a soul and then tell it to be happy. Don’t see the worst in a person and expect them to see the best in you. Don’t judge people and expect them to stand by your side. Don’t play with fire and expect to stay safe. Life is about giving and taking. You cannot expect to give bad and receive good. You cannot expect to give hate and receive love. So if you’re willing to make a positive change in your life,  you must be willing to be that change.”  ~ Najwa Zebian

All you PROMAXers remember SHANNA GREEN, right? She was Editorial Director of Brief Magazine and all the online goin’s on. She’s great. Well, she left PROMAX and went to doing fulltime PR and taking the slot Content Manager for Priya PR, always keeping her freelance writing shingle out. She’s wonderful if you haven’t figured that out yet. Now she’s been tapped to be Director of Communications for Anonymous Content, the company that is a real hybrid – talent, commercials, TV shows and more. The Western Washington University grad gets a big Well Dunne!

San Diego is just lovely…the kind of educated, perfect-weather ocean city you imagine when one says when asked ‘where do you want to live?’. So one can imagine why staying there is a great idea. And that’s just what CHRIS PHEIL did when he took a writer producer slot for KFMB’s CSD MIKE STEWART. The two are busy getting ready to take over the CW affiliate in SD end of this month, so Chris is putting in time with that and with the duties of a May book for CBS. Whew! Mr Pheil (pronounced File ) has 17 years experience he’s bringing over from XETV, which seems to have fallen on very hard times, having closed all news operations and will be signing off programs, ceasing to exist. If you have openings, you might want to seek some of these very talented and proficient people out…  Chris and Mike get big Well Dunne!s and our wish for a smooth transition.

Lots of you love dogs…as well you should. Want to have your pup featured on Realsimple.com thanks to Purina? Then enter and good luck.

Making the switch from Toledo, Ohio to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina sounds like a lovely change of pace. It’s what JASON ASHMAWI has done. BTW, a name that echoes a Hawaiian Island is a great name. Jason of the Hawaiian island sounding last name is now the Promotions Manager at WPDE an WWMB, the ABC and CW affiliates in The Grand Strand. Jason was at Sinclair’s WNWO, NBC in Toledo.  The Ball State grad did commercial production at Fort Wayne’s WPTA as well as shot news as a photojournalist. He’s going to have a wonderful time living in a resort city. Wonder if he plays golf…MB calls itself the Golf Capital of the World. Well Dunne! Jason.

Well Dunne! to all 44 Raycom TV stations for their decision to carry The National Memorial Day Parade, set for Monday May 29. Raycom has shown a tremendous amount of creativity when it comes to programming, and this is another example. 2pm – put it on your calendar.

Definitely not one to support the 24/7 work culture that so many have had thrust upon them. Without a division of work and relaxation, you’ll drop. Be a burnout. Be ineffective. France has taken steps with their ‘right to disconnect’ legislation. You should know about it. Thanks BBC News.

Think About This:  No matter how things appear in time and space, you will prevail. You are a forever being, a God-particle, and all else is illusionary. What’s real is love, what’s fake fades away. You’re here by choice, inclined to succeed, surrounded by friends, with positive thoughts 10,000 times more powerful than negative ones. Go, make hay, because in the blink of an eye, we’ll all move beyond the drama of circumstances into new adventures, no one left behind, more loved and in love. Yet right now, for just a little bit longer, we get to play here.”  ~  Mike Dooley

What are you doing Sunday. Yeah, this Sunday. The 30th. If you’re anywhere near Atlantic City, you’re in luck….you can go to the Iron Room and see ANDREA LAIGN’s amazing photos. She’s a former promo pro (WJLA, WBAL, KPRC) who is now Lead Consultant to the digital goins-on at the NEA. She’s got an amazing eye and her photos are worth the trip to AC. CORY has a winner. Not the title of a horse race movie…but the reality of CORY McRAE after his search for an Assistant Creative Services Director for his WXII TV.   That’s Hearst’s NBC affil in the Winston-Salem market, which includes High Point, home to furniture. The talented lady who has joined him is SHELLEY BOHNING. She’s a delight. Shelley is coming over from FOX in that market. She’s a TV lady who also has production house experience. Enthusiastic, talented and already hard at work…what a great hire. Well Dunne! Shelley.

On the Soapbox – (stop reading now if you don’t want an opinion, unsolicited as it is). WHAT is going on with a return to BAD ANNOUNCING that is seeping into network promos? Show of hands…do you know what a ‘puker’ is…it’s a Ted Baxter-like read that is considered a step above ___. And puking is happening – hurts your ears. Can’t imagine it helping with tune-in. Is this something that is a ‘thing’ (thank you JOHN OLIVER) or perhaps some tragic hipster irony that isn’t working? Thank you for listening. Carry on.

Always loved Giant Octopus. Love the name…love their work. Used them and, well, this is a fan writing this. Giant O has some great news….RUTH DIAL is back. The originator of this amazingly exciting broadcast news and network design firm has added Media to the name (GO Media) and is partnering with MAC MCLAUGHLIN’s FX Design folks, the set design go-to people. Ruth has an impressive list of credentials. The Florida-based lady has been Design Director for WFLA in Tampa as well as WSVN and NBC6 in Miami. She’s designed for Olympics on two networks. If you’re reading this from NAB, go look up Ruth (and Mac) at their booth N3820. Well Dunne! Ruth.

It all started in Lubbock. Yep, in the near-Panhandle of Texas where LARA RICHARDSON had her first TV job. She coordinated Promos for KJTV and then jumped to USA Broadcasting in Miami where she added Writing and Producing to her repertoire before getting bumped to Director On-Air Promos. From there it was on to NYC to be Senior Writer Producer for Oxygen before catching on with Discovery where Ms. Lara held a series of well-earned titles like Supervising Producer for TLC, Creative Director of History Channel and VP Creative TLC.   In 2012 she was tabbed Senior VP of Marketing for Discovery out of their LA offices then just recently her title was again promoted to Group EVP Marketing Discovery, Animal Planet and Science Channel. VERY nice Lara. She graduated from high school in Puerto Rico and Washington State University. A kind hearted soul, she volunteered for the Red Cross after Katrina, and, in true creative style, turned that experience into a documentary. Well Dunne! Lara.

Now, let’s face it…finding a place where the ND doesn’t believe they are marketing pros…where the GM understands the marketing process and you don’t have to convince them it’s important…where your direct boss is one of the best, nicest and smartest ladies in the business (and she cooks too!) … in a big market, well, that’s pretty rare. And that’s what this job is. So my little puppets…let’s find the right person!

No less than two rather iconic musicians have recorded Tulsa Time. Country side Don Williams recorded it in 1978 then the one and only Eric Clapton included it on an album that same year. Tulsa, which actually is in the Central Time zone, is where TIM BOKNECHT is now calling home. Tim is the new Creative Services Director at Cox’s KOKI, Fox in Tulsa Town. He’s coming down from Wichita, where he was Marketing and Creative Services Director for Gray’s KAKE, ABC. He’s a Kansas State (bonus points if you know Willie the Wildcat) and Wichita State grad who loves music…he studied it as well as made a living as a Singer and Guitarist. He owned his own prodco as well. First TV job was in promo producing for KSNW in the aforementioned Wichita. He’ll be a lot closer to Dallas now – Tulsa was once considered Little D (Dallas being Big D). Well Dunne! Tim.

There is nothing better than sharing the excitement and happiness that goes with new jobs, new positions, new family, new towns, new beginnings. And there is nothing that hurts as much as writing about the loss of someone who was gifted with humor, artful talent, music, kindness and energy. Someone who was a friend…who shared the highs and lows of life via the internet and phone calls. Someone who had been counted out more than once, and always arose from the canvas, victorious and wiser to, as the Brits say, carry on. A brave man left us last week. BLAIR PAINE passed away in Nashville, Tennessee and left behind a legion of people who he worked with, helped along, and loved. Family, friends…gathered to say goodbye. Blair was a transplant success story and loved sharing how that process worked, and how he came out to live more days fully. He loved writing and making spots…commercials and promos. He was CSD at WTVQ in Lexington, WSMV in Nashville and WBKO in Bowling Green. He freelanced but always hoped the cruel hiring processes in TV would see all his talent and not his health issues. He struggled because his talents never left him and the hope he could again do what he loved, and take care of things, never really came about. The truth is, we can be kinder. We can be gentler. We can mourn the loss and wish we had done more for this wonderful man. We are, after all, just walking each other home.

It takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to make the drive from Buffalo, NY to Rochester, NY. 76 miles. Of course that doesn’t take into account weather or heavy traffic. And that’s just one way. Make it a round trip and that’s 2 and a half hours a day. Each week that means 12 and a half hours a week. 650 hours in a years time. That’s 81 days if we buy into the time frames we’re using. That’s how much STEVE PATRICK is going to get back when he makes the switch from CSD at Hubbard’s WHEC in Rochester to CSD at Nexstar’s WIVB in Buffalo. Seems the wife wanted to live in Buffalo and his love kept him on the road back and forth. Steve’s just that kind of great guy. He’ll be returning to WIVB where he was a Producer and Political Editor back when LIN owned the station. The Fordham grad got into the world of TV marketing and promo at WTAE in Pittsburgh then ran the creative at WNCN in Raleigh back when it was NBC. His WHEC GM is a great one as well, so that was a hard decision to make. But all those hours in the car…gonna be a new man with time on his hands! Big Well Dunne! Steve.

Think About This: "Let us not deceive ourselves or live in a silly illusion about our
creativity. Creativity is a choice. (In theological terms, it is grace and
works operating together. It is an option to live a life with grace.)
Creativity is not a particular gift given to certain people only. It is a
personal choice and a cultural choice, An individual choice and a family,
professional, and societal choice, and at this time in our history it is a
species choice. We choose whether to let creativity flow or not-in our
educational systems, our media, our politics, our economics, our religions,

in, the Christ in, the Buddha nature in."  ~  Matthew Fox

Retirement. It used to be word that conjured up icons of rocking chairs, fishing poles, and eating dinner at 4 in the afternoon. No more. Not even close. Retirement now is like the curtain coming down on one act of a play, then going right back up for the next one.  F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that there are no second acts to American lives. He would not write that today. All this is prelude to announcing that SAM JONES is going to retire from his promo job at KMBC in KC. Sam’s been Sr. Writer Producer at the Hearst ABC affil as well as doing promo as Sr. Producer at WITI, Fox in Milwaukee. Down in Shreveport at KSLA, he produced commercials. Sam, let us know what Act 2 will be – we’re all ready to applaud. No matter what, enjoy! Well Dunne! Sam.

If this looks odd. please forgive. Gremlins are in the Macs tonight and I just don’t have the energy to fix it right now…. 😉

Topographically, the US is incredibly diverse. From the deserts of the Southwest to forests of the Pacific Northwest….the grassy plains of the Midwest to the Southeast lowlands and the vibe of the east coast – it’s all different and exciting. Creative people love making the switch from one place to another, and HENRY VASQUEZ  is one such soul. He’ll be heading back to the east coast, where the New Yorker calls home, as the new Vice President Director of Brand and Digital Development at Tribune’s WTIC, the CBS affiliate in Hartford.  Henry is going to cash in his chips, so to speak, as CSD of Nexstar’s KLAS in Las Vegas. For the last several years, Henry and his lovely wife have been bi-coastal and they’re looking forward to more time together.  Henry actually began his career at Tribune as Creative Services Assistant in NYC at WPIX. Down in Philly he was Promo Manager for WCAU as well as promo producer for KYW, WPVI and WCAU. Yep he ran the Philly promo table. Mr. V has an MBA and now a very impressive new business card. Hope he plays a hot slot before heading out…he’s on a great streak. Well Dunne! Henry.
