So far, 2017 has proven to be a fast-moving, bizarre, surreal few weeks. A well respected friend pointed out from his VP office, ‘all my childhood is fading away, one at a time.’ Yesterday MARY TYLER MOORE turned off the lights in the WJM-TV newsroom for the very, very last time. Her character Mary Richards painted a picture of TV news that attracted more than a few of us to get into the business.  But it wasn’t the job itself that was the extra spark that made MTM an icon. It was the fact her character was strong, single, brave, anxious, and feminine…and smart. That was not the picture of women in the US at the time. The happy ending for Mary Richards was a job well done, a friend helped, a statement made, all without an apron or a PTA membership. It was cutting edge in its day and it was done with top drawer humor. Well Dunne! Mary Richards.

If you don’t think a musical jingle has power anymore (btw – Who said that? Somebody floated that rumor..who said that?) just remember that everybody used the song’s words when Mary died. Who could turn the world on with a smile…

CBS is running a Mary salute Thursday night. PBS is and on Saturday, Sundance TV is running a Mary Marathon. .

In the real world…down in San Antonio, dear DON SMITH’s father, Don Sr., passed away today. Don was a Junior with a brand new son just a week old. The wheel of life keeps turning. Our love to Don and his family. Don is CSD at KENS.

Think About This:  “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered…We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful.”  ~ Elizabeth Edwards

You’ve all heard of the brass ring…well, this is about the gold ring. Grabbing it is CSD ALEX SHAW who heads up the marketing arm of WPEC, Sinclair’s Palm Beach CBS affil. In just shy of a week, his new Promotion Manager is going to check in, and that is the gold ring in discussion. The good folks at the station will be welcoming BARRY FITZSIMMONS to the fold, and they couldn’t have found someone who’ll bring more talent and zip than Barry. Plus they’ve gotten themselves a man with a wonderful sense of humor. Let’s fact it…a sense of humor is as important as oxygen in today’s world. Many of you know Barry by his author and podcast name, the Promo Cowboy. It’s a novel as well as a Must Hear..his iTunes podcast Promo Cowboys. Do it. The Boston U grad has worked promo magic at NBC, MSNBC, ONE World Sports and ESPN as well as ABC, MLB, etc. NYC has a lot of great work done by Barry (and folks who are Promo Cowboys). He’ll be a real asset to Alex and will be working with fun talented LARRY DOYLE, who knows a thing or two about what makes poppin’ TV. See you all soon…it is The Seaon you know. Well Dunne! Barry.

LAUREN RIDGLEY does not let grass grow under her feet. She’s no longer full-time station side where she headed marketing like she did at WISN in Milwaukee, but her marketing talents are not sitting in idle. As if being mom to a most adorable little girl under the age of 1 isn’t enough, she’s now working with Marshall Advertising, the folks who handle media buying for many stations. So when Lauren reaches out to you, reach back! Lady is fabulous. Lauren will stay in the Northwest, but isn’t it lovely we can all work from where we are most of the time now. Yes it is. Well Dunne, Lauren!

Horribly destructive weekend in the south. Tornadoes in many places. ERIK SNELL and his family had a very close call with a damaging twister. All is well with the Snells but not so with their neighbors. He’s the CSD at Raycom’s WDAM in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Tomorrow, great news from WPEC in West Palm.

Ever have a time in your life when someone puts pressure on you to do something you don’t really want to do? They do it because they see in you something that you might now see at all. Happened to ROB ANDERSON and he switched from doing commercial production to doing TV promo – and he couldn’t be happier. It’s working out well for him and he is the new Creative Services Manager of WPTA/WISE, Quincy Media’s ABC/CW in Fort Wayne, where he started his career as a news photog. He’s a Huntington, Indiana native and went to  Vincennes University before grabbing a camera and doing the ‘news thing’. He switched to doing commercial production after 10 years in news, and he loved commercials. However, when his then-GM asked him if he’d switch to promo, he said no. Didn’t want to do the same ole thing day after day. A week later, the GM pressed the issue, and Rob said ‘sure’…and before you know it, he was a promo pro and a much happier man. Rob was a writer producer (who also was a shooter..duh) at the station but then took I-75 south to Florida where he promo’d for the NBC O&O in Miami. He was lured back home and is looking forward to marketing ‘above his marketing size’ (a phrase just now coined and I hope it sticks…). Lovely to know such enthusiasm and talent is getting a free reign in today’s world. Well Dunne! Rob.

The WFTV set was a Z Creative work. Niiiice. They worked with WFTV News Director MATT PARCELL. Big thanks to KATHRYN MOSHER-BOULE for the info.

Cancer has robbed the world of another creative. Robbed the world of a friend, a husband, brother in law…of a unique presence. We are all the less for it. WILL HARRIS has passed away, adding another notch to the unrelenting numbers that cancer claims as its own. For the last four years, Will has been Creative Services Director of Cox’s FOX affil in Tulsa, KOKI. Along the way, he’s done marketing, creative and producing for Cox stations in the Northwest, and did amazing work at  KTVU in Oakland in the SF market. He attended Norfolk State U and called Virginia Beach home. So many lives will miss him.

When a CSD promotes a producer with the words “greatly deserved’, it’s a doubly good thing. Good for the person getting the promotion and good for the CSD (and company) for nurturing talent. While they might not be able to read this because of the horrific ice storm forecast for their market, the good folks at Scripps in Kansas City have promoted ROBERT HESS ll to Promo Manager of NBC affil KSHB and independent KMCI.  He’s been a Senior Producer for CD RANDY THURMAN, and obviously did a fantastic job. Bob, as he is known, is a grad of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and has a Masters in Communication fro University of Central Missouri.  He started in promo over at WDAF in KC where he was also a shooter and an MMJ, so he knows the news side of the coin. Great big Well Dunne! Mr. Hess.

If you aren’t a fan of RAY RICHMOND’s writing, then a suspicious eye is cast upon you. Ray is great – knows the biz and has written for Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and he’s funny and on target…yes, this is a fan talking. While you read this, if you’re in the LA area, open your scheduler and go to January 16. Now for 7:30 pm, put free reading at Lounge Theatre on Santa Monica of Transition, Ray’s play about the meeting between Obama and Trump. It’s going to run for 5 weeks starting in March, but this reading is free and I bet hilarious. Do it. Be the first. NBCU’s JORDANA HOUCHINS is gonna be there.

Never having to worry about a bad hair day again…yeah, that’s a life perk for sure. It’s just part of the new job for JEFF SCHROCK, Creative Services Director for Nexstar’s WBOY, NBC in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Jeff had until quite recently been a reporter and anchor for WBOY. So yes, he knows news inside and out. He’s stepping behind the camera, which has a few  advantages, like the hair thing, at the same time  it opens new doors for his artistic growth. Jeff’s a local guy who has worked for the CBS affil doing all the things one does in TV– he’s even run a live truck. For sure he really knows TV inside and out. He goes by another name as well: Lt. Colonel Schrock – he’s part of the Civil Air Patrol. Well Dunne! to Jeff!

A Texas lady always feels at home and ready to take on the world no matter where she is. But when she’s in the South, it’s even better. Such is the case with MICHELLE BEECH who is a TCU grad (that’s Texas Christian in Fort Worth for you Google-shy folks). Michelle is now Creative Services Director in Spartanburg heading up the creative efforts of Media General’s WSPA and WYCW, the CBS and CW affiliates in Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market in the upstate of South Carolina and western North Carolina. Beautiful territory, and there’s a Pottery Barn outlet, too. Back to Michelle, who names America as her hometown, seeing as she was a military child and she moved all over. She has a most interesting background and was most recently at AR&D as Marketing Strategist and Station Marketing Consultant. She has led departments at KKCO and KKTV as well as produced promos for WJTV and WAPT. She’s a major win for WSPA…let’s all chime in and send her a big Well Dunne!

Speaking of Texas…down San Antonio way, Tuesday a very special little someone made his debut and the reviews are all raves! KENS CSD DON SMITH and his beautiful wife have a new baby boy who has a very adorable and proud big brother. Can’t wait to see more pictures…you should send Don a big congrats. No word on whether there are cigars on the horizon, but there is definitely a major spike in the cuteness factor in SA today.

Just love writing about the very talented and energetic ROBYN KEENEY, who is now doing her best to keep dry in Sacramento, where she’s taken the job of Creative Services Director at KOVR. Yes, the Big California Deluge is happening and Ms. Robyn is helming the team at the CBS owned and operated station in California’s capital. She moved west from the Sinclair operation in San Antonio where she was Promotion Manager, the title she held at WGCL in Atlanta as well. In Atlanta, she was a promo producer for WSB which  marked the switch from being in day-to-day news, where she produced for WJW in Cleveland and WKBN in Youngstown. She’s smart, creative, and was a stand-out at Topical Boot Camp. She’s already found a place to ride horses, which is her favorite way to spend time when she’s not making stations look great. A big Well Dunne! Robyn!

MARY BETH McADARAGH just got promoted to EVP of Marketing for CBS TV Distribution. Whot whot! Sunny but soggy LA is a change of place from her University of North Dakota days. Show of hands on who remembers her from her MyNetwork TV affil relations SVP, or NBC U TV Distribution marketing VP. Yep, that’s a lot of hands. Well Dunne! Mary Beth!

Now that we can throw dirt on 2016, which did more than its fair share of throwing dirt….we should catch up with someone who slipped through the cracks and deserves a spotlight. Shine that beam on TIM McSPADDEN, who in June took on the Promo Manager slot at Colorado Springs’ KRDO. Tim’s a muy talented all-round story teller kind of exec who has personality to spare. Yeah, a homerun. He wrote, produced and directed Love A La Carte, which you can google and check out for yourself. He’s handled creative dubbed with all kinds of titles from WABC in NYC to KPNX in wonderful Phoenix, etc. Trading the desert for the mountains…lots of people do that. A belated but enthusiastic Well Dunne! Tim.

Loving the program show name graphics CBS is using. Will hunt down info on that…really stand out and pop…check ‘em out yourself.

Think About This:  Let’s trust the magic of beginnings. Let’s let go of petty grievances so we can surmount the actual challenges. Let’s liberally sprinkle the words ‘I love you’ into as many conversations as we can. Let’s remember to speak up when something moves your soul to do so. Let’s spend more time in nature and laugh more times than we feel irked. Let’s let our inner songs be heard and our uniqueness embraced. Let’s remember those who left us in 2016 and welcome new beings, new friends, new experiences and new ideas with gusto. 2016 – don’t let the door hit you on the way out. 2017 – come in and let’s be co-conspirators to new adventures.  ~  Kate Bacon

‘There’s no place like home for the holidays.’ When you sing this lovely song this year, think of SPENCER ERNST, who is home for the holidays and he’ll be sticking around because he has a job in his hometown. The hometown in question is one shared…St. Louis. Gateway to the West and city of the best baseball team in the world (refrain from contacting me about this truth, please – minds will not be changed) Spencer Ernst is the new Digital Content Producer at Meredith’s CBS affil, KMOV. Yes, the same KMOV where the office window views are the Mississippi, the Gateway Arch, the Old Cathedral and the eastern US horizon. Best in the continental US. (again, save the feedback…) Spencer has been down I-44 in Springfield at KYTV for the past several years, doing wonderful promo work and enjoying the Ozarks. But the job at KMOV is a homecoming, since he was once there managing kmov.com and doing all the social work as Broadcast Assistant. He’s a Mizzou grad and a grad of Lindbergh High as well. If you pay attention at all, you know the importance of the high school… Huge happy holiday Well Dunne! Spencer.

Graphics are the icing on the promo cupcake. Art is any form is a gift – a talent – and even now an IT skill deluxe. When ERIK CANDIANI, head creative honcho at FOX’s KTVU in the Bay Area (San Francisco-Oakland TV market for the Argentine readers) went on the hunt for a new graphics pro, he had a high bar and great expectations (Charles Dickens reference noted). He’s thrilled at the new hire he made: LISA RUIZ. Even better, he’s worked with her before when they were both at CBS in Sacramento, KOVR.  Lisa is a FITM grad (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA) who has had some of the most interesting jobs, like being a design consultant for Jane Seymour Handbags…in Malibu no less. She’s done art for public television in Napa, freelanced and worked with the Madison Square Garden Company where she honed Photoshop skills. Now she’s bringing energy and excitement to the whole KTVU creative team. Just in time for Christmas. Well Dunne! Lisa.

Yep, a marketing pro turned GM was just named GM of 2016 by Broadcasting & Cable Mag. Let’s hear it (and I mean put some moxie into it) for MICKI BYRNES, GM of WKYC, Tegna’s NBC affil in Cleveland. Anybody who knows her is clapping right now. Micki has done Creative Services, Promotion and all manner of PR for stations in Atlanta, Boston and San Francisco as well as WKYC. She’s served on boards (some of us were lucky enough to do that with her) and been a leader in many ways. Leading WKYC was a natural step and one she has handled with award-winning aplomb. Can’t imagine any reason why more Marketing types aren’t being given the key to the corner offices. Look to Micki as inspiration. Well Dunne! Micki.

The American Southwest is a one-of-a-kind place that fascinates. There are desserts around the globe, but the US Southwest is a lifestyle, a geography, a history and a myth all rolled together. So is the lower part of Louisiana. Bayous, language, history and humidity meld to imprint the people and form the basis of a unique locale. Some of us are lucky enough to experience one or the other in our creative odyssey. BEN BATES, on the other hand, is experiencing both. All the more material to pull from when the creative juices need oil. Ben is a Baton Rouge native who has just been tapped by the amazing DEILIA WILLIANS (admittedly top of the favorite list) to be her Assistant Creative Services Director of Hearst’s ABC affil in Albuquerque, New Mexico, KOAT. Ben began his TV journey at WVLA in Louisiana’s capital city where he was a Promo Producer. From there he headed west to Denver’s KDVR’s where he forged more promo chops. Like a lot of promo folks, he felt the need for a ‘news break’ and joined Denver-based Craftsy editing long form educational videos about…Crafts. See, the name says it all. Then, like promo folks do, TV called and Deilia was on the other end. He and his wife will be settling down in The Duke City right before Christmas, and they both promise to go to Santa Fe and see the farolitos, which give The City Different a feel akin to pure magic. Looking forward to getting to know him even better…as should you. Well Dunne! Ben!

The powers of ESP. Some believe…some don’t. Perhaps it was ESP that found DOUG DONAHOO written up back in late June as the new CSD of Kansas City’s KCTV. At the time, it wasn’t accurate. Apologies were made – forgiveness bestowed. However, all the signs were there. For instance, Doug’s a KU Jayhawk and the station is not all that far from his alma mater. Yes, he worked at KCTV, the CBS affil, as a Promo Producer before heading to The Duke City and taking on the title of Multi Media Production Supervisor for Hearst’s KOAT. So the ties to KC are deep. The CSD slot has been open a very long time and Doug was a candidate that knew the market, knew the station and had the enthusiastic talent to nail it. Like all good things that are awaited, it’s now official that Mr. D is beginning this very day (if you read this Monday). A wonderful end to a tale of ESP and talent that never gives up. A very sincere and fervent Well Dunne! Doug.

“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” Anybody feel that way with jobs in TV? Uh huh…The Godfather part 3 nails it, right? Anyway, MIKE CUNNINGHAM has been doing creative work outside the ‘real TV’ category and now, he’s the producer for Local Memphis Live at Nexstar’s  WATN in Memphis. He’s been Promotion Director in Des Moines at KCWI where he produced Great Day Morning Show. He’s a Purdue grad who’s headed up creative at KTUL in Tulsa, KGAN in Cedar Rapids and KCCI. He’s recently been Creative Marketing Director for the Ames Times in, where else, Ames, Iowa. Enjoy Memphis and say hi to Elvis for us. Well Dunne! Mike.

Bonton Media has tapped promo man DAVID CALDWELL to be the new GM at KTXS. David had been Creative Services Manager at the ABC affil and before that was at Nexstar-owned KTAB/KRBC doing creative. Boston gets major gold stars for recognizing the leadership and knowledge that marketing people can bring to any organization. David replaces former promo man turned GM BUD BROWN who passed away suddenly. Thanks KAREN YARBROUGH for sharing the news about David.

Graciousness is not an adjective that one often hears in describing a city. Instead, words like ‘Bustling’, ‘Growing’, ‘Fast-paced’, even ‘Picturesque’ are used – but ‘gracious’…not so much. One such city that can be described as gracious is Charleston, South Carolina. Home to The Battery and hometown to Rhett Butler, Charleston has a rich history, an elegant look and a social structure full of house parties and debutantes. It’s going to be the new home of JEFF WINGET, who is taking the Creative Services Director slot at Raycom’s WCSC, CBS. Jeff is making the change from St. Louis where he handled marketing, promo, art and the like for KSDK as the Director of Marketing and Promotion. The Utah State grad was at Salt Lake City’s KSL Director of Brand Services before hitting The Lou. Jeff begins Monday. The city is decorated for the holidays…and it couldn’t be a better time to be there. Well Dunne! Jeff.

You know how every slice of life…group or segment…has people who are just great and you’re really happy when good things happen to them? Well, GARY WOLVERTON is one of those guys (which as a word implies members of both sexual identities…). Gary is now doing that TV marketing leadership thing down in Mobile as in Alabama, hard on the Gulf of Mexico for WKRG, Media General’s CBS affil. Official title – Brand Manager. He’s a southern gentleman in the very best sense of the word and I bet he’s happy to be back south after his stint in West Virginia where he was CSD at WCHS/WVAH in Charleston. He’s helmed marketing or WIAT in Birmingham, WHNS known as Fox Carolina in Greenville SC, and worked his way to Marketing Director at WJTV in Jackson, where he was at one time a news shooter and editor. Big Well Dunne! Gary. Bet you’ll love the decorated boats that make Mobile sparkle this time of year.

It’s so exciting when you spot talent when they just begin a career…then watch when they grow and hone that talent. It’s like watching a gorgeous flower bloom. Then when something great happens to them, its even more thrilling than normal. Let’s point to one up and coming talent named JENNY DOLPH, who TERRY KOWALSKI discovered when the two of the were doing that promo thing in South Bend Indiana. Not that she was a newbie…Ms. Jenny had gotten a degree from Purdue and had done production and promo and web editing at such places as WLFI, WSJV and Gray Interactive. She calls herself a ‘Jen of all trades’. When Jenny stepped up to Pittsburgh as News Brand Producer for WTAE in Steel Town, she was doing super work. CSD TRACY ACCORD OLIVER was a super boss, and Jenny hates saying goodbye, but she’s off to Columbus, Ohio to work for LARRY WATZMAN at WBNS. Love watching this flower bloom! Well Dunne! Jenny. She starts Dec12, beating Santa to the holiday punch.

Lovely to see ANNIE ROHRS get promoted. She’s now Director Public Relations at CBS Interactive, upped from her role as Sr. Manager. She’s done communications for NFL and Yahoo as well. Well Dunne! Annie.
