Lexington is the heart of horse country; where the bluest of Kentucky blue grass inhabitants race and roam pastures so beautiful they do paintings. Lex, conveniently located half way between Louisville and Cincinnati, is now home to STEVE WALLACE, an outgoing creative with an eye for great photography who is now the Creative Services Director of WTVQ. He’s a Houston native and what goes better with Texans than horses…it seems like a perfect fit. He knows and loves and worked in Dallas but he’s a New Yorker by choice. His wife got him to Lexington, and that’s how he became head of the creative team at the ABC affil. I didn’t ask if he was a basketball fan, which is gigantic due to the University of Kentucky being right there. Well Dunne! Steve.

Ya’ll order your Stephen Arnold new holiday Christmas album? Do it! STEPHEN is amazing (and has the best hair in the business) and tells me: Purchasing our brand new Holiday album, "The Six Strings of Christmas, Volume 2" is a great opportunity to help provide music lessons and instruments to underprivileged public school kids around the country. Little Kids Rock trains public school teachers in their innovative curriculum and donates all of the instruments and resources necessary to run full-fledged music programs.  You have to help out. What is it about the draw of a TV newsroom and the marketing thereof? It’s a strong connection and, when one steps away, the attraction never really fades to black. One progresses and finds new aspects of themselves in different jobs, keeping all the skills of promotion and production and creative discovery sharp. That’s what PETER ZEMANSKY has done…he’s now Marketing Content Specialist for a start up creative concern in Des Moines named Bing Bang. He’s pushing his personal boundaries for their clients, and he sounds very happy. He’s been at it a bit and, yet, he does indeed miss that newsroom pace. He interned at CBS News in DC and most recently was Community and Marketing Manager for FOX’s KMSP in Minneapolis-St. Paul. He knows Des Moines and was Assistant CSD for KCCI in Iowa’s capital city. Sounds like there are exciting things on his plate. Well Dunne! Peter.

Plans were to tell you about the new CSD in Lexington as well as PETER ZEMANSKY’s new role in Des Moines, but not with KCCI.  Like all well planned plans, events conspired to push this back and focus on former WXIX/Cincinnati & WESH/Orlando promo pro TONY REED. Tony, who is a student in Columbus at Ohio State U  was a first-person witness to the violence that happened on the campus. He’s fine; checked in as safe. But he was in a building next to the garage where bad things happened. He’s studying HR and will no doubt remember 11-28. Life can change in an instant…and you all know that. Thankful he’s fine.

Come back tomorrow.

Hope you are reading this from a place that makes you happy…around people that make you laugh…eating food that brings back memories of younger days on the planet…thinking thoughts that ensure you are the most unique and wondrous of people. I am grateful for you in ways even words can’t relay. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.

Hearst hit the jackpot when they hired JAY CHALMERS as the Assistant Creative Services Director for their ABC affil in Palm Beach, WPBF. CSD HEATH MYRICK has hired a real go-getter creative … hip hip hurray! Clay is a Gainesville Florida native who went to Florida State, which means he was playing both sides of the football field, Florida collegiate style. Gators and Seminoles…very dicey subject. After FSU, he then went to the esteemed Savannah College of Art and Design earning a Masters in Film and Television Production. He’s worked as a producer, first doing commercials in Gainesville at WCJB then up to Jacksonville doing promo for First Coast News (WTLV/WJXX) then to Orlando’s FOX WOFL for CSD CHRIS FRIEDRICHS (hi Chris!)…all the while thinking that experiencing different seasons might be fun, as opposed to nonstop sunshine and palm trees. Nah…  Jay’s hitting the Palm Beaches just in time for ‘The Season’, dahling. Amazing people-watching along Worth Avenue.  So glad to hear about such a happy move, which means he’s still close to family and his wife is happy. Can’t beat that. Well Dunne! Jay.

It’s the perfect…no the most perfect… time to be in New York City. Christmas tree going up at 30 Rock, ice skating, window shopping, more lights than ever. When KEITH MORAN shared that he was the new writer producer for VP MISSY CRAWFORD’s creative team at WNBC, the idea of how lucky he is was the first thing that popped to mind. Keith is going to be promoting the largest local TV investigative unit in NYC while working with Missy and Promo Manager PHYLLIS OHNEMUS. He calls it hitting the promo home run. His first spot dealt with their chief investigative reporter going to Europe to follow the NYPD anti-terror program.  As if he needs more to be ideal, his hometown of Schenectady is just two plus hours north. Keith has moved from Chicago, where he was a promo producer at the FOX/CW duop for VP STEVE DONALD, who Keith says gave him his first big market. Niiiice. Mr. Moran has also worked doing promo and production in St. Louis, Indianapolis, his hometown at WRGB and in Albany. Can’t wait to see you soon, KM. Til then a big Well Dunne! Keith!

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s time to enjoy what might be the funniest TV episode – ever – the Turkey Promotion epi of WKRP in Cincinnati. “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly,” is a line so classic, nothing more needs to be added. We all have stories about promos, events, shoots, people that did something silly…and it’s time to wrangle them in one place. Enter the brains of Topical Boot Camp, SYDNEY RUBIN, who is collecting antedotes, stories, and even folk tales of promo mishaps. What Fun! Share with her and we’ll all have some great laughs. Yes, names will be changed if requested to protect the guilty or easily embarrassed.

St. Louis is a city of neighborhoods, each with a distinctive characteristic. The Hill is where the Italians settled, and it’s where you have a profusion of the best Italian food this side of Rome (and that includes New York…sorry Big Apple, but you don’t own that category) It’s the kind of neighborhood where you walk to the park, grab a cup of coffee (and a cannoli) and know your neighbors as well as their dogs. It’s where BRIAN SPENCER lives. Brian is a St. Louis guy by birth, having grown up not too far from The Hill in Dogtown, where the Irish settled.  Brian has been happy with his life, and now has an added plus to add to his list: Promotion Manager for CBS affil KMOV. He had been a creative writer producer, but got tapped with the new title by CSD TONY GETTS. Brian has quite the pedigree in the biz: KSDK and WRAL. And he has quite the office view: the Old Cathedral, the south leg of the Gateway Arch and the mighty Mississippi. Ahhh…it’s sublime. A big St. Louis Well Dunne! Brian.

If one would need to defend an idea that isn’t the ‘same ol same ol’, here’s another bit of ammunition to help you get to a greenlight. During this fierce election process, the hands-down best political ad was not for a national candidate. It was not for a state-wide candidate. It was for Travis County Commissioner, precinct 3 in Austin, Texas. The spot showing Gerald Daughtery’s love of facts and his wife’s need for him to get out from under her feet – it WORKED. He won. And he didn’t just win – he outpolled the top of the Republican ticket by 21%. He got votes from what they call raw voters who don’t vote a straight party ballot. Gerald got more raw votes than Clinton AND Trump combined. CHAD CROW was kind enough to share all this. It’s a homerun. SO, next time someone wants you to do the ‘same ol same ol’ spots, tell them Gerald Daughtery proves it’s not a good idea. Or call Chad and get him to do a campaign for you.  Well Dunne! KCStrategies. Well Dunne!

JASON KANE, who is Citizen Kane (right?) is the new Promotion Manager for Raycom’s WBTV in Charlotte, the Queen City. He began just this Monday and moves into his new place this weekend. Yep, he hit the ground running at the CBS affil, what with all that’s been going on. Despite the hectic pace, he sounded cool and very energized about his new slot. Jason is originally from Toledo, Ohio. How did he get from Toledo to NC? It happened when he was doing graphics and animation for an ad agency who sent him to Raleigh. He loved it…and became interested in news and before you knew it, he was using his agency skills for a TV station; he was Sr. Writer and Producer for WNCN in Raleigh, working with CSD ROBBY THOMAS. They produced an amazing and award-winning spot about school busses…you should ask them about it. Then, Robby took the WBTV CSD slot. But now, the two are working together, just further down I-85. Working with people who click is a real gift. Big Well Dunne! Jason.

“Say, Pooh. Why aren’t you busy?” I said.

“Because it’s a nice day,” said Pooh.

“Yes, but …”

“Why ruin it?” he said.

“But you could be doing something Important,” I said.

“I am,” said Pooh.

“Oh? Doing what?”

“Listening,” he said.

“Listening to what?”

“To the birds. And that squirrel over there.”

“What are they saying?” I asked.

“That it’s a nice day,” said Pooh.

“But you know that already,” I said.

“Yes, but it’s always good to hear that somebody else thinks so, too,” he replied.

Adventuresome, confident and adaptable – all hallmarks of those who, as BARRY FITZSIMMONS has dubbed, are Promo Cowboys – those who venture forth, town to town, to do creative work. Unlike some career choices, TV marketing doesn’t offer a career path that generally allows upward mobility without changing locations. But for those who love what they do, jumping into a new market…a new city…learning about different people and yourself at the same time. It’s all exhilarating. SYDNEY RUBIN is about to venture forth and embrace Seattle, where she’ll be News Brand Manager for Tribune’s Fox affil KCPQ. She’ll be working with Director of Marketing and Creative Services, BRETT AYRES as well as GM PAM PIERSON, who has a background in markting. It’s gonna be a lot of fun…and Seattle is going to see some amazing work thanks to Ms. Syd. And yes, she’ll still be available for Topical Boot Camps! It’s all good. And she’s the best. Heartfelt Well Dunne! Syd!

Feel knee deep in political…everything? Well, the very talented folks at Austin’s KC Strategies have produced another ‘not your typical political ad’ ad…and CHAD CROW was kind enough to share. Nice backstory…A neighbor of Gerald, the Austin TX candidate whose wife begged viewers to elect him to office, well, the neighbor knows the lady running for office out in California. Gerald and the candidate, Casey Lucius, talked, and Gerald recommended Chad’s crew to her. Nothing as good as a happy client helping get you more clients! Chad used much of the same in feel, font, music, but the spots can be stand-alone. Big fan here…Passing the effort along for ya’ll to enjoy. Well Dunne! KCStrategies!

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘hometown’. Most of us exhale and enjoy the sepia-toned memories of the place or places where we grew up, – learned and laughed and perhaps made friends we still hold dear. Some of us have one hometown, and others are blessed with knowing many places that played their part as home. ETHAN EDWARDS thinks of Smithfield, Virginia as home, and it’s a gorgeous town on the Pagan River (a tributary of the James) where, among other things, Smithfield ham become a must-have dinner item. Ethan went into the TV biz, which led him to take his degree from Elon to interning at CBS News in London during the Gulf War. Back stateside, he started in news at WFMY in Greensboro where he was an Assignment Editor then to WTKR in the Hampton Roads area. He switched to Promo Producer there, and went on to Hearst’s WDSU in New Orleans, where he met his wife. From there, it was the Land of Enchantment where he became Assistant CSD at KOAT. He’s now got his own department to run as Creative Services Director of KOKH/KOCB, the Sinclair-owned Fox and CW duop. Speaking of running, his little girl just started walking, so he’ll be running creative at work and running after her at home. It’s all great. Big Well Dunne! Ethan.

  • Create commercials, including audio and video elements

When a job finds you, it’s meant to be. It’s what happened to DAVE TRAYLOR, who was surprised, flattered and excited when ESPN called to offer him a job. He hadn’t been on the hunt and hadn’t even talked to anybody at ESPN for three years. But they remembered him…and now he’s going to be their Lead Designer Motion Graphics when he begins in early December. He and his wife (and Chocolate Lab) will go from one end of the US to the other, via Prius, when they depart San Diego. Dave is an animator and editor for KGTV in San Diego, and he’ll miss the California lifestyle. He’s a Denver native (and massive Broncos fan…ask him the name of the lab) who got his first job in TV at KDVR in The Mile High City. He started as a weekend graphics guy, working nights and really got into TV graphics, teaching himself editing and animation. He’ll be using Cinema 4D and After Effects when he gets to Connecticut. Dave didn’t even look for the San Diego gig…his former KDVR colleague SHIRTSIE GAYLORD, Marketing Manager, called him. Keep your eye on this guy…he’s got ‘IT’ and will definitely add to the already great look ESPN has going on. Well Dunne! Dave.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN one and all.

Denver is not at all like Portland, Maine. One is a wonderful seaside port city and the other is a mile high vibrant one. They’re both great in their own way, but mountains and New England rocky seashores really are different. To choose to switch from one locale to the other denotes a spirit of adventure and daring – very exciting. Especially when you get a promotion in job title and responsibility acting as a catalyst.  Such is the case with JENNIFER WOODRUFF, who has left Tegna-owned KUSA in the aforementioned Denver to run the marketing efforts of Tegna-owned WCSH in the aforementioned Portland. Her arrival was just in time for the gorgeous autumn New England is famous for. Back in Denver, Jennifer was producer and Designer for 9 News, as they brand themselves. She’s got a degree in Graphic Design and Media Studies from Colorado State and worked doing graphics for Transamerica before joining the TV world. Well Dunne! Jennifer.

Today, we talk politics. STOP…do not go avert your eyes or hit Delete…this is about politics and it’s all interesting, and not in the ‘politics kind of way’ you’re used to this election season. First, let’s shine a light on Raycom Media who has wrangled (and that is meant in the most cowboy of ways) the six (count ‘em six) Senate candidates in Louisiana and gotten their promise to show up in one place (Dillard University in The Big Easy) on November 2 from 7 to 8 pm Central. What will ensue will be a debate and can be viewed on WAFB, WVUE, KPLC, KSLA, KALB CW/Alexandria and C-Span plus streamed. Well Dunne! Raycom.

Next, we move to the best political commercial seen this season (and, frankly the best for LOTS of political seasons.)  The story behind it is the stuff of Hollywood writers’ dreams. Austin-ites know about Gerald Daugherty and his wife. The spot is here. So what agency put this gem together? What NYC or LA director made this a masterpiece? The answer is a lesson. Enter KC Strategies, the literal Austin mom and pop shop run by CHAD CROW and his wife. They do political campaigns and have known the Daugherty’s for over 15 years. When Chad proposed doing something other than the same ol’ same ol’, the reaction from his clients was a definite no. But Chad persuaded them, first by assuring them if they didn’t like it, it would never see the light of day. No voters would ever see this different idea. If they kinda liked it when done, but weren’t crazy happy, it would go up on the website and let it just live in cyberspace. Reluctantly, the Daugherty’s agreed, but were VERY uncomfortable during production. After all, a production is a very messy affair, and their house was the set. The production team was…wait for it…in-house. Director Steve Mims and the crew have been working with Chad for quite some time. They put the spot together in record time (or in the amount of time a TV promo person would take) and up it went on the net. Enter the Austin newspaper, and their story. Enter Star Trek’s George Takei who posted it on Facebook and his million and a half plus followers super-charged getting eyeballs to the spot. Chad said the secret to the spot was that the Daugherty’s trusted him and that they had a long relationship. Amen. Today, the TODAY Show featured them. Since this is the last campaign Gerald is going to run, he’s going out with a bang and the hope that Trump doesn’t poison the voting pool against sane Republicans. As Gerald himself describes Austin: “a blueberry in a bowl of strawberries.” Chad was very reluctant to talk about KC Strategies role…he wants all the attention to be on his client. This is a super guy…and he talked because you’re all pros and this is a professional to professional story. Big fan of Chad and KC Strategy. Let’s give the wonderful creative a huge Well Dunne! and let’s point out how an in-house effort can run the table from the pros from Dover.

When someone passes away, the simplest memories come to the front…popping into your consciousness unexpectedly, bringing both comfort and the empty feeling of loss. BUD BROWN has passed away. Bud, who left us this morning, was a Promo Pro who had taken a career path that led him to managing TV stations. He was in Abilene, TX as GM of KTXS, the ABC/CW outlet owned by Bonton Media. CSD DAVID CALDWELL said he had not been feeling well on Monday and finally went to the ER, where things did not improve. The staff is in shock, as are the many people who knew him. His full name is Albert Brown…and he did promo in Amarillo, Tulsa and other markets before landing at then-Belo’s WWL in New Orleans. He helmed this, his first station in The Big Easy, before heading to Abilene. Bud lovingly cared for his first wife for many years before she passed away. He leaves behind his second wife and young son Winston. KTXS posted this on their website. All our thoughts of comfort and strength go out to all who knew him.

Imagine a think tank that combines leading research and marketing minds…growing ideas that could one day make fabulous films. It’s happening. Make note of The Engine Room, the Hollywood marriage of SE/ASI (research) and NEIL GOETZ (marketing). Neil is the Founder and Executive Creative Director.  “The Engine Room’s philosophy is that every project needs a clear and viable marketing strategy at the outset in order to succeed with trailers, TV spots, promos, print and digital media content.” Absolutely. Neil knows of what he speaks, having been Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment as well as working in markting for mOcean and Craig Murray Productions. And yes, this can and should apply to news operations. Big Well Dunne! Neil.

It’s a St. Louis streak…yes it is. What are da chances.  Today we have another St. Louisan with great news. Makes the hometown heart swell. This particular native is now in market #1, New York City, and he’s been promoted at the #1 station there. Yeah, that is very exciting. Come on down BRANDON NELSON, promoted to Promotion and Digital Brand Manager of WABC. He’s a Mizzou grad (go Tigers!) who went on to get a Masters from University of Arizona (that’s the one in Tucson). Got his foot in the TV door down in Columbia, MO where he was a production assistant for KOMU. Obviously, he liked the medium and he showed his talents to advantage. Now his old Sr. Writer Producer slot is open in the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Brandon is a major and sincere St. Louis Cardinals fan, which means the man has taste, class and my vote for favorite new acquaintance of the month. Let’s hear it – major Well Dunne! Brandon.

If you begin a conversation with “where did you go to high school?”, then you are having a conversation with a native St. Louisian. It’s one of the oddities of growing up in the Gateway to the West. Nobody knows why. It’s a litmus test of sorts…only St. Louis people will get it. With that in mind, it’s time to bring ADAM HERNDON into the picture. He’s a real St. Louis guy who immediately answered the question and didn’t think twice about it. And now this energetic marketing pro has come back to his hometown as Director of Marketing and Promotions at Tegna’s KSDK, the NBC affiliate. He shares the love of Italian food from The Hill as well as the eternal support for the best baseball team ever, the Cardinals. Gotta love it. Adam is a Mizzou grad (a family tradition) who has always loved Marketing…has two degrees in it; the MBA is from St. Louis U. Back when he was a fresh grad, his father dragged him to a networking event and, within a week, it led to a job in marketing in Chicago, which led him to an experiential marketing gig for Walgreens, which found him driving all over the country. Think of it as a Road Rules kind of situation. He’s worked for marketing firms like Marketing Werks and Fusion Marketing with clients like Anheuser-Busch and the CDC. He’s bringing all that energy to the NBC affiliate. Forgot to ask if he was a Guido’s pizza fan.  Let’s have a big Well Dunne! for Adam.

Shout out of Thanks to PETE BARRETT, who was able to answer an equipment problem quickly, easily, correctly and with a smile. That’s what makes a great Go-To guy. Well Dunne!
