Feel knee deep in political…everything? Well, the very talented folks at Austin’s KC Strategies have produced another ‘not your typical political ad’ ad…and CHAD CROW was kind enough to share. Nice backstory…A neighbor of Gerald, the Austin TX candidate whose wife begged viewers to elect him to office, well, the neighbor knows the lady running for office out in California. Gerald and the candidate, Casey Lucius, talked, and Gerald recommended Chad’s crew to her. Nothing as good as a happy client helping get you more clients! What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘hometown’. Most of us exhale and enjoy the sepia-toned memories of the place or places where we grew up, – learned and laughed and perhaps made friends we still hold dear. Some of us have one hometown, and others are blessed with knowing many places that played their part as home. ETHAN EDWARDS thinks of Smithfield, Virginia as home, and it’s a gorgeous town on the Pagan River (a tributary of the James) where, among other things, Smithfield ham become a must-have dinner item. Ethan went into the TV biz, which led him to take his degree from Elon to interning at CBS News in London during the Gulf War. Back stateside, he started in news at WFMY in Greensboro where he was an Assignment Editor then to WTKR in the Hampton Roads area. He switched to Promo Producer there, and went on to Hearst’s WDSU in New Orleans, where he met his wife. From there, it was the Land of Enchantment where he became Assistant CSD at KOAT. He’s now got his own department to run as Creative Services Director of KOKH/KOCB, the Sinclair-owned Fox and CW duop. Speaking of running, his little girl just started walking, so he’ll be running creative at work and running after her at home. It’s all great. Big Well Dunne! Ethan.

When a job finds you, it’s meant to be. It’s what happened to DAVE TRAYLOR, who was surprised, flattered and excited when ESPN called to offer him a job. He hadn’t been on the hunt and hadn’t even talked to anybody at ESPN for three years. But they remembered him…and now he’s going to be their Lead Designer Motion Graphics when he begins in early December. He and his wife (and Chocolate Lab) will go from one end of the US to the other, via Prius, when they depart San Diego. Dave is an animator and editor for KGTV in San Diego, and he’ll miss the California lifestyle. He’s a Denver native (and massive Broncos fan…ask him the name of the lab) who got his first job in TV at KDVR in The Mile High City. He started as a weekend graphics guy, working nights and really got into TV graphics, teaching himself editing and animation. He’ll be using Cinema 4D and After Effects when he gets to Connecticut. Dave didn’t even look for the San Diego gig…his former KDVR colleague SHIRTSIE GAYLORD, Marketing Manager, called him. Keep your eye on this guy…he’s got ‘IT’ and will definitely add to the already great look ESPN has going on. Well Dunne! Dave.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN one and all.


Denver is not at all like Portland, Maine. One is a wonderful seaside port city and the other is a mile high vibrant one. They’re both great in their own way, but mountains and New England rocky seashores really are different. To choose to switch from one locale to the other denotes a spirit of adventure and daring – very exciting. Especially when you get a promotion in job title and responsibility acting as a catalyst.  Such is the case with JENNIFER WOODRUFF, who has left Tegna-owned KUSA in the aforementioned Denver to run the marketing efforts of Tegna-owned WCSH in the aforementioned Portland. Her arrival was just in time for the gorgeous autumn New England is famous for. Back in Denver, Jennifer was producer and Designer for 9 News, as they brand themselves. She’s got a degree in Graphic Design and Media Studies from Colorado State and worked doing graphics for Transamerica before joining the TV world. Well Dunne! Jennifer.


MARTY WALL is joining Flex Creative as Director Business Development. Marty has written and produced for just about all the fab shows, syndications, studios, networks and cable nets and he sounds like the perfect fit for Flex. Well Dunne! Marty.

Today, we talk politics. STOP…do not go avert your eyes or hit Delete…this is about politics and it’s all interesting, and not in the ‘politics kind of way’ you’re used to this election season. First, let’s shine a light on Raycom Media who has wrangled (and that is meant in the most cowboy of ways) the six (count ‘em six) Senate candidates in Louisiana and gotten their promise to show up in one place (Dillard University in The Big Easy) on November 2 from 7 to 8 pm Central. What will ensue will be a debate and can be viewed on WAFB, WVUE, KPLC, KSLA, KALB CW/Alexandria and C-Span plus streamed. Well Dunne! Raycom.


Next, we move to the best political commercial seen this season (and, frankly the best for LOTS of political seasons.)  The story behind it is the stuff of Hollywood writers’ dreams. Austin-ites know about Gerald Daugherty and his wife. The spot is here. So what agency put this gem together? What NYC or LA director made this a masterpiece? The answer is a lesson. Enter KC Strategies, the literal Austin mom and pop shop run by CHAD CROW and his wife. They do political campaigns and have known the Daugherty’s for over 15 years. When Chad proposed doing something other than the same ol’ same ol’, the reaction from his clients was a definite no. But Chad persuaded them, first by assuring them if they didn’t like it, it would never see the light of day. No voters would ever see this different idea. If they kinda liked it when done, but weren’t crazy happy, it would go up on the website and let it just live in cyberspace. Reluctantly, the Daugherty’s agreed, but were VERY uncomfortable during production. After all, a production is a very messy affair, and their house was the set. The production team was…wait for it…in-house. Director Steve Mims and the crew have been working with Chad for quite some time. They put the spot together in record time (or in the amount of time a TV promo person would take) and up it went on the net. Enter the Austin newspaper, and their story. Enter Star Trek’s George Takei who posted it on Facebook and his million and a half plus followers super-charged getting eyeballs to the spot. Chad said the secret to the spot was that the Daugherty’s trusted him and that they had a long relationship. Amen. Today, the TODAY Show featured them. Since this is the last campaign Gerald is going to run, he’s going out with a bang and the hope that Trump doesn’t poison the voting pool against sane Republicans. As Gerald himself describes Austin: “a blueberry in a bowl of strawberries.” Chad was very reluctant to talk about KC Strategies role…he wants all the attention to be on his client. This is a super guy…and he talked because you’re all pros and this is a professional to professional story. Big fan of Chad and KC Strategy. Let’s give the wonderful creative a huge Well Dunne! and let’s point out how an in-house effort can run the table from the pros from Dover.

When someone passes away, the simplest memories come to the front…popping into your consciousness unexpectedly, bringing both comfort and the empty feeling of loss. BUD BROWN has passed away. Bud, who left us this morning, was a Promo Pro who had taken a career path that led him to managing TV stations. He was in Abilene, TX as GM of KTXS, the ABC/CW outlet owned by Bonton Media. CSD DAVID CALDWELL said he had not been feeling well on Monday and finally went to the ER, where things did not improve. The staff is in shock, as are the many people who knew him. His full name is Albert Brown…and he did promo in Amarillo, Tulsa and other markets before landing at then-Belo’s WWL in New Orleans. He helmed this, his first station in The Big Easy, before heading to Abilene. Bud lovingly cared for his first wife for many years before she passed away. He leaves behind his second wife and young son Winston. KTXS posted this on their website. All our thoughts of comfort and strength go out to all who knew him.

Imagine a think tank that combines leading research and marketing minds…growing ideas that could one day make fabulous films. It’s happening. Make note of The Engine Room, the Hollywood marriage of SE/ASI (research) and NEIL GOETZ (marketing). Neil is the Founder and Executive Creative Director.  “The Engine Room’s philosophy is that every project needs a clear and viable marketing strategy at the outset in order to succeed with trailers, TV spots, promos, print and digital media content.” Absolutely. Neil knows of what he speaks, having been Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment as well as working in markting for mOcean and Craig Murray Productions. It’s a St. Louis streak…yes it is. What are da chances.  Today we have another St. Louisan with great news. Makes the hometown heart swell. This particular native is now in market #1, New York City, and he’s been promoted at the #1 station there. Yeah, that is very exciting. Come on down BRANDON NELSON, promoted to Promotion and Digital Brand Manager of WABC. He’s a Mizzou grad (go Tigers!) who went on to get a Masters from University of Arizona (that’s the one in Tucson). Got his foot in the TV door down in Columbia, MO where he was a production assistant for KOMU. Obviously, he liked the medium and he showed his talents to advantage. Now his old Sr. Writer Producer slot is open in the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Brandon is a major and sincere St. Louis Cardinals fan, which means the man has taste, class and my vote for favorite new acquaintance of the month. Let’s hear it – major Well Dunne! Brandon.

If you begin a conversation with “where did you go to high school?”, then you are having a conversation with a native St. Louisian. It’s one of the oddities of growing up in the Gateway to the West. Nobody knows why. It’s a litmus test of sorts…only St. Louis people will get it. With that in mind, it’s time to bring ADAM HERNDON into the picture. He’s a real St. Louis guy who immediately answered the question and didn’t think twice about it. And now this energetic marketing pro has come back to his hometown as Director of Marketing and Promotions at Tegna’s KSDK, the NBC affiliate. He shares the love of Italian food from The Hill as well as the eternal support for the best baseball team ever, the Cardinals. Gotta love it. Adam is a Mizzou grad (a family tradition) who has always loved Marketing…has two degrees in it; the MBA is from St. Louis U. Back when he was a fresh grad, his father dragged him to a networking event and, within a week, it led to a job in marketing in Chicago, which led him to an experiential marketing gig for Walgreens, which found him driving all over the country. Think of it as a Road Rules kind of situation. He’s worked for marketing firms like Marketing Werks and Fusion Marketing with clients like Anheuser-Busch and the CDC. He’s bringing all that energy to the NBC affiliate. Forgot to ask if he was a Guido’s pizza fan.  Let’s have a big Well Dunne! for Adam.

As wonderful and fun and important marketing entertainment and news is….there’s a lot to be said for using those skills and talents in other areas. Areas where human needs might be served in a more basic way. When PAUL MONTGOMERY left heading up the creative at Indianapolis’ ABC affil WRTV, and the opportunity field was wide open, he was drawn to an Indy based concern. Christel House International stood out and after doing some freelance work for them, he was just named Director of Marketing, Public Relations and Content Management. Paul’s a Ball State grad who began his TV journey at CNN and then worked his way through all the promo slots at WRTV. Always did great work. Know he will help them immensely on their mission to lift children out of poverty. A heartfelt Well Dunne! Paul.

PETER MARTIN has stepped up, taken all his promo knowledge, talent and background and started his own shop. Oh YEAH Peter! He’s created FLEX Creative, Burbank-based, and they’re focusing on promotional and in-show content for broadcast TV, cable and streaming. Peter took his San Diego State diploma to LA and began at KCOP where he ended up Manager of Creative Services. He then went to KTTV, FOX in LA and was Director of Creative Services. He soon became involved in launching programs for FOX, like Cops and FOX Kids Club. Disney-ABC grabbed him and he filled several top roles, including VP Creative Services.  He then went Agency at Modern Creative and United Front Design. Now he’s flying the plane himself. Let’s give him a great big Well Dunne! Peter.

Let’s jump into the WayBack Machine for a moment…revisit 2000’s presidential election. Remember how Florida played a huge part in the outcome? The hanging chad thing? Yeah. Didn’t you want Florida to, among a mile-long list of other things, have a good PR person to help with getting the story sorted? Many newsies did. OK, jump out – History moment over. Now let’s take a gander at the new Outreach and Media Manager at Miami-Dade County Elections Department in, as the title says, Miami. Cue ROBERT RODRIGUEZ. Since Florida is a key voting state, and Miami is the second largest Florida city in population, it’s very reassuring to know Robert will have his eye on things. He knows his stuff and his background includes being Promo Manager at LA’s FOX stations, KTTV and KCOP, and producing for WSMV in Miami. He’s also done government PR for the Property Appraiser down at the tip of the Sunshine State. Robert, Well Dunne!


Will JOHN OLIVER’s folks back off roasting WCBS promos now that LEE GROSSMAN has been promoted? Lee’s been EP and Production Manager at the NYC flagship of the Tiffany Network, and the promos have been part of a bit on HBO’s Last Week Tonight. National publicity is a good thing. Lee has worked his way up the WCBS creative ladder, starting right out of Towson U as an AP and then writer/producer, EP and Production Manager and now Director, On-Air Promotion and Marketing CBS Television Stations. He’ll stay on at WCBS but added leading the CBS CSD’s coast to coast. He’s got a great bunch of talent to lead. Well Dunne! Lee.


All clear and all is well for Well Dunne! Talent’s deep-voiced MITCH PHILLIPS, who avoided any real problems from Hurricane Matthew. He’s just south of Palm Beach (or can it be considered just north of Miami?).

The last few days have certainly been, uh, interesting. There was joy and gratitude and the sharing of feelings that bind us as humans. For instance, former promo pro JIM GRAVINA, who is now tearing it up at the DC Agency Shine Creative got married. He and his gorgeous bride are actually on their way to Niagara Falls. Love it! 


Up in Raleigh, where the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew raged, WRAL’s SHELLY LESLIE has quite the story regarding a huge heavy tree that fell…right on the car she was in. The tree fell perfectly between her house, not hitting anything. It fell on the car, but didn’t hurt her or her passenger. It’s angelic.


Bright days ahead for WJLA’s ZOHRA ALNOOR got engaged! The lady with the great smile now has the greatest smile. Yes, happiness in spades for this wonderfully talented young lady.

Remember how your heart swelled the first time you heard a first responder described with ‘they run INTO the danger’? Today, give attention and kudos to all the Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina TV people who are working in hurricane conditions. Crews from far away, where all is well, have come to help. Hurricane Matthew, the uninvited weather emergency, isn’t an adventure, it’s a terrible challenge. TV people along the eastern coast are to sleeping in cubicles, eating microwave pizza and pitching in. Whatever needs to be done, they’re there. To make a difference; Making a difference is the reason many chose the biz. Market to market, competitors are colleagues at the moment. Let’s all send them good thoughts of safety.

There are some people that do their jobs with such ease, it seems as if they are as vital a part of their operations as the building and the machines. They seem indispensible. Such a person is AKILAH MONIFA, who has been the Director of Communications and Public Affairs for CBS in the San Francisco Bay Area. Akilah has been the whirling dervish of the City By The Bay…described by one of her co-workers as ‘the most energetic person I’ve ever known and she knows EVERYbody’. That she does. But even the most ideal pairing has a life span…a new adventure calls and we choose a new path to trod. Akilah is going to take some time off and travel before getting new business cards. In the meantime, she’ll be sorely missed but will continue to write for the Huffington Post and The Progressive Media Project. Everything she does is Well Dunne!


There’s so few words that seem right when someone loses their father. No matter what, losing Your Dad leaves one swamped with emotions, memories and taking care of everyone else first, which is what most Dad’s did for us. When news of a loss is shared, there needs to be a better way to express that you feel the loss as well, even if you never met the person who has transitioned. Sincere condolences go to PETER CARLSON and LINDSAY BLEDSOE on the recent loss of their fathers.

Kudos to Promotion Manager JAMES GRIFFEL and the weather crew down at Palm Beach’s WPTV…their live Hurricane Matthew update on Facebook last night was great. Exactly what social media is meant to do. Was too slow to get a screen grab…will have to find out what they used…iPhone, etc. Well Dunne! James.


In NYC today (Tuesday)? Don’t miss your chance to have a picture with a Yeti. I presume it’s a real one, eh? Even in this nutzo election year, a Yeti is pretty rare on the NYC streets. Head to Flatiron Pedestrian Plaza (5th Ave and 23rd St) about 10 and smile. Not sure if saying cheese will set him off, but you can if you want. If you’re otherwise engaged, look for Yetis all over the Apple. 26 of them are promised. Iced coffee will be gratis at Union Square in the afternoon. Just when the reality of it being October hits (meaning the year is quickly running out…how did that happen?) comes very nice news about KENNY LAWRENCE. He’s heading to the lovely mountainous area of Virginia/Tennessee/North Carolina…but not to peep at the colorful leaves. He’s going to take the President and General Manager position at WJHL, the Media General owned CBS affil, officially in Johnson City, TN. He’s been GM down in Lafayette, LA at KLFY, CBS, which was his first GM-ship. But at heart, Kenny is a man who’ headed up creative and programming….did so for CBS in Atlanta, CBS in Boston, Warner Brothers Productions and KCOP in LA. Love it! He graduated from Plymouth State in New Hampshire, making him even more of a fave. I know you’ll all start this Monday off with a hearty, supportive and congratulatory Well Dunne! Kenny!


CLINT GOOCH had a very good weekend. He’s the Assistant Creative Services Director at Fort Smith, AR’s KHBS/KHOG. And he’s now a husband, having tied the knot with the most lovely lady…that’s a weekend event. Best wishes to the Gooch’s.

No doubt about it…the man likes mountains. EDWARD MACSALKA has lived, studied and worked in markets where mountains made their presence known. He’s the new CSD at WIAT, Media General’s CBS affil in Birmingham, Alabama, where they have a long ridge named Red Mountain which offers a breathtaking view of the city as well as the ideal broadcast tower placement. Edward’s new station is almost at the top, so he’ll be feeling at home. Mountains he’s enjoyed along the way include the Rockies – he was in Denver with Comcast Communications and ROOT Sports – and the Chugach – he was Promotion Director for Denali’s stations out of Anchorage, Alaska. He’s a University of Colorado Boulder alum who will no doubt have a blast in the south. Big Well Dunne! to you.

Exotic south Florida offers the ideal environment for gators to thrive. Not just the kind floating about in the canals but the student kind…the grads from the University of Florida. They’re the Gators, as most of you know, and one of them has recently gotten a promotion at Miami’s WSVN, the Sunbeam FOX affiliate. CSD MICHAEL PARENTE sent word that LAUREN MUSKOVAC is now a full-fledged writer producer on his creative team. She had been working as the Creative Services Coordinating Producer and she did a great job. Now she’s donned several hats at the station, including video tape op. While in Gainesville, where UofF is located, she interned at Vista Satellite and got her start in TV at WUFT and WRUF. Sounds like she is One To Watch…sending her a sunny Well Dunne! Lauren.

San Antonio is a lovely city….they like to enjoy life there. They celebrate and dance and sing…all to the background of color and greenery and friendly people. When DON SMITH emailed about his new Marketing Manager, it was another happy moment for the South Texas branch of TV. With all the craziness happening, to hear happy news is a tonic. Former digital team member ANDREW DELGADO is the new Marketing Manager for KENS5, CBS in SA. With his degree in English and Communication Arts from St. Mary’s (were during Fiesta they have an amazing oyster roast!), Andrew has been producing promos and the like for a bit…and now he’s gonna be Don’s wing man. When he was doing digital, Mr D got awarded a Texas AP Broadcasters Award as well as a Murrow. Impressive. OK, everybody, let’s hear a big Well Dunne! Andrew.

There’s just something about Midwesterners. It’s a solidness, perhaps. A sense of ‘doing the right thing’ and not expecting applause for it. A sensible approach to life that doesn’t eliminate crazy but knows when to go there. Yes, Midwesterners are an ideal cup of tea. JAMIE PETERSON is a Midwesterner who originally hails from Iowa (did you read that CURTIS MILES?). The Quad Cities to be more precise. He spent summers at Osage Beach, which this Missourian knows well. Jamie chose college at Arizona State in Phoenix, which was a real switch from the verdant spaces near the Mississippi’s banks – and he loved the desert. Stayed there. Jamie is the new Brand Manager of TEGNA’s NBC affil, KPNX,  in The Valley of the Sun, having come from his startup, RedCouch Studio, which focused on boutique TV production and creative concepting. With a background based in art (ask him about the Sistine Chapel of stained glass…no, ask him) he’s got fresh eyes and a lot of enthusiasm as well as a background in the agency biz. So great to meet him! Looking forward to those little Mexican food hole-in-the-walls. And best wishes to his new bride as well…lots going on with him. Well Dunne! Jamie.
