Go West Young Man, the Horace Greeley advice was part of the temptation that found DON SMITH’s heading past the Mississippi. He traded central Florida for Salt Lake City, where he took the CSD slot at Newport’s ABC affil, KTVX. Now, he and his lovely finance are headed further West, this time to the capital of the Golden State, Sacramento. Don is thrilled to be the new Promotion Manager at CBS’s KOVR. Don will be working with CSD DREW FOWLER, another fave guy. Sounds like a road trip is order now. Don is a Belo alum and a great guy. The station is a fave, too…at one time owned by a close friend’s father and then the creative home to some of the most amazing done under the late JOHN TISCHENDORF. Well Dunne! Don. See you and Drew one day soon!
MICHAEL WINTER (that’s him on the right) has a new slot, and it’s exciting. Formerly the head of programming for DIY, Michael is now VP of TV Production and Development for Boy Wonder Productions out of NYC. Michael has a marvelous background with such companies as Castle Rock, MTV and Versus. Well Dunne! Michael. Great news.
In the light of all the downsizing news, there are stations and slots open. For instance, WKOW in Madison, WI is on the hunt for a Marketing Manager. MICHAEL LANGE, who writes and does promo magic, was on the ball and emailed me Friday and I just now got around to posting it. Sorry Michael… But if you’re interested in a great small city with a very high IQ viewership, here’s a golden opportunity.

Over this holiday weekend, exciting events were afoot for DON SMITH, the CSD at Salt Lake City’s ABC affil, KTVX. He got engaged! The lovely Nicole has said “yes”. Of course she did. She’s in Orlando, where Don used to work at WESH in Winter Park. Congrats! Such happy news!
Did anybody see the Papa John’s pizza spots this weekend? There were on tons and tons via my Direct TV hookup. Why mention it? Because Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS was part of the spot. His deep tones will be on hand at the upcoming PROMAX Conference when he emcees the bda Awards. Cool.

Happy Spring! April snuck up and, despite the fact it is snowing in such locales as Chicago and Louisville, the reinvigorated feeling of a fresh start is in the air.
Speaking of fresh starts, STEVE KOONCE is making one even as you read this (if you read this on Monday). In order to get his new job off the ground, Steve is looking for places to live in his new home town, Salt Lake City. Looking for a place to call home can be daunting, but no doubt Steve is up to it. He is the new writer-producer at KTVX, abc4.com in the Beehive state capital. Steve makes the trek back west from time spent doing topicals at DC’s WJLA. If the name seems familiar, it’s no doubt because his dad, JIM KOONCE, has been helming the creative efforts at Las Vegas’ ABC affil, KNTV. Looks like the Alphabet Web net runs in the family. NY based PMcD supplied a promo toolkit for the Starz producers and editors including ID’s, end pages, and long form sequences.
