Raycom Director of Research BILLY MCDOWELL isn’t just a great guy (worked with him long ago…) and an insightful research pro, it seems he’s also a musician!  ReverbNation has his song performing in the top 3% so he will be a featured artist with them for the next couple of weeks. Give it a listen.

Kudos to WENDY MCMAHON for being elected to the Board of Directors of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. Wendy is, of course, President of the ABC O&O Station Group and a former promo pro deluxe. Well Dunne!

Anybody watch the premiere of Yellowstone with Kevin Costner on the Paramount Network? BEAR MENOR, the most handsome and talented young actor is in it. That’s a shout out and a tease at the same time…see how that happened? Anyone needing a young man with a natural read, well he doe that too.

Lots to ponder. Let’s hear a big Well Dunne! for them.

Think About This:  “The problem isn’t that more people hate than love; the problem is when those who hate, hate with greater conviction than that displayed by those who love. Our love needs to rise up now like a mighty wave that will not stop building: passionate, convicted and applied to everything.”  ~  Marianne Williamson

ANDREW BIDWELL slogged through doing Topicals in San Diego before getting back to the fun of entertainment marketing and production. He left SD for Jukin Media, owned by Ellen btw, where he went back to his lovely LA and was a producer. Now, starting pretty son, Mr. Andrew is going to be part of  the  RuPaul ‘s Drag Race. The UCLA grad has worked in some pretty sweet sounding places, like E! Networks where he was a Digital Producer and doing talent relations for Oprah. Can’t wait to hear all about the fun and fashions involved in the new gig. Well Dunne! Andrew.

The one and only RAY ECKE, who is a PR man deluxe and writes so well, he writes for us. This is his take on the first two days of PROMAX NYC. You know, Big Kids PROAX. So thrilled he was able to catch up with CHRIS SLOAN and MIKE BENSON.

PromaxBDA 2018: New York – Reporter’s Notebook

By Ray Ecke, Well Dunne Talent correspondent

Day 1:

“Man that is a long line,” said one PromaxBDA attendee as the escalator delivered him to the 2nd floor of the New York Hilton and greeted him with a registration line that snaked seemingly the length of an entire city block.

Yes, lines suck, but the sessions and all around good vibes present here would made it all worth the wait.

Scott Rogowsky, the comic and host and creator of the groundbreaking mobile app game show HQ Trivia, began day one with a quick game of trivia and joked about how the Grand Ballroom here also the site of the Trump campaign’s victory party in 2016 and that we had to work hard to exercise those demons.

From there he introduced Dawn Ostroff, President of Conde Nast Entertainment for an in-depth talk about the state of the TV in the age OTTs like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu growing in dominance. She noted that while content is “queen” that good content not only makes an impact but also is memorable as evidenced by Architectural Digest Open House video series featuring DJ/Producer Zedd that not only got 14 million views but informal market research (she asked her kids) they not saw it but registered the magazine brand behind it.

From there, Ad Age Magazine’s media reporter Jeanine Poggi interviewed Angela Courtin, Global Head of Marketing, YouTube & Originals, followed by Mike Benson, Head of Marketing, Amazon Studios.

Benson, a former marketing executive for ABC, noted how interesting it was for him to be in the audience for the recent Upfronts as a media buyer rather than on stage presenting. “Linear TV still works,” Benson said noting that Amazon bought a Super Bowl ad for the first time to promote the upcoming series Jack Ryan, “but we need to figure out how to better use it.”

The highlight of the day was the conversation with actress Laura Dern and Me Too movement founder Tarana Burke, moderated by ABC’s 20/20 co-anchor Amy Robach.

“We slowly shift culture by shifting our narrative,” said Me Too founder Tarana Burke. “Entertainment industry folks are at the forefront of that.”

“It’s a much larger issue that we all need to consider for the next generation,” Dern added.

Day 2

Second day of PromaxBDA is always my favorite: everyone is settled in and acclimating to the pace, which for sessions at Promax this year has taken on more of a TED-like vibe with 3 mini sessions totaling 90 minutes wrapped under a unifying theme. Plus, Wednesday is always party night for attendees, with shindigs hosted by numerous Promax mainstays such as Stephen Arnold Music, Videohelper and IKA Collective.

One of the more effecting sessions was “Be The Change: Using Your Platform For Social Good” that featured Chris Sloan, Owner/President of 2C Creative; Lara Richardson, Group EVP, Discovery and Science Channel; and Kim Rosenbaum, EVP, Marketing and Chief Creative Officer, Nickelodeon Group.

Sloan, who is also Co-founder of Caleb & Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation, the non-profit he founded to honor his late son whose fundraisers and community outreach efforts have benefitted Lehrman Community Day School, Miami Children’s Museum, Centro Mater Child Care Services, #HashtagLunchBag, Operation Puerto Rico Care-Lift, Operation Puerto Rico Gift-Lift and others. Sloan highlighted the work the organization did bringing meals to Puerto Rico’s hurricane victim.

He’s also supporting Operation Backpack, which under the guidance of Rachel Weinstein, VP, Communications & External Relations, was enlisting help from PromaxBDA attendees to fill backpacks with school supplies for thousands of New York City’s homeless children. Weinstein told me she was deeply affected when she noticed many New York City school kids were heading to school without a backpack because they couldn’t afford one, or the school supplies to go inside it. She vowed then to make a difference, and she certainly has. For more information go to www.OperationBackpackNYC.org.

Of course one of the must-see’s was Lee Hunt’s Best Practice’s 2018, which focused media consolidation and the continued trend toward network’s creating their OTT apps and how their promo breaks directed viewers toward these emerging viewing platforms. His complete findings are available at http://leehunt.com/articles/LeeHunt_BestPractices2018_video.pdf.

As for the parties, Stephen Arnold Music’s rooftop soiree was a lot of fun with the music company of course giving away one of its prized guitars. Hanging out was Grammy-winning engineer Juan Cristobal Losada, whose credits include Santana, Jon Secada and Shakira among many others.

The picture is Noelle Alains, Tinsley Bone and Chad Cook of Stephen Arnold Music with lucky winner of their psychedelic guitar.

This is a particularly happy post. Happy for GABRIEL LUNA (aka Gabe) who is going to get his first CSD slot. Gabe is a doll…a wonderful family man as well as a very talented promo pro. He then went out to Seattle’s KIRO to hone his craft. Very excited that he’s been given the chance (well deserved) to CSD. OK, 1 – 2 – 3…Well Dunne! Gabe!

If anybody thinks that being a good boss or a bad boss doesn’t matter in the long run…think again. As the old adage goes, people don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses. To further that, people who love working with someone will go back when the chance presents itself. Kind of like having your own posse. Finding a group that works and plays well together is heaven. And when it doesn’t work, it’s not heaven. The best situation is when you have a great boss, a great posse and your old boss has an opening and then you have to choose between good and good. Finding himself in that position was JESSE HEARN. He was happy producing promos for Promo Manager BILL MURPHY at the Tribune station in Hartford.  Bill is a great guy. But Jesse’s old boss, WES POLLARD, had an opening in Memphis, and Jesse is going to return to WREG, where he worked before going to east to Hartford. Bonus, he’ll be closer to family back in the Home of the Blues. Both Wes and Jesse graduated from the University of Memphis. Jesse was an adjunct professor at Arkansas State U to boot. Let’s give Jesse a big Well Dunne! Thanks to former VP Creative HENRY VAZQUEZ for the tip! And people, Bill is a super guy to work with!

What was the last big adventure you took? JOHN RICE went to Alaska. Sure, he was doing a media job there, which is the same career path as in the lower 48.  He’s been CSD at KTVA in Anchorage, but actually overseeing creative for the Denali stations throughout the state, which is bigger than Texas. It’s been a major adventure. Just driving to Alaska is worthy of a binge watch series. That was a few years ago, and as exciting as the adventure has been, it was 4,381 miles, give or take, away from family.  Family was the draw that is bringing John back to North Carolina. He’ll begin in mid-July as the CSD for Nexstar’s WNCN in the North Carolina capital. NC is a familiar haunt for him – he was in Charlotte at WCNC heading creative before going up South Street to WBTV in the same role. John’s a Texas Longhorn who has been in the promo biz for KHOU and various freelance callings in Houston. An avid cyclist, he’ll enjoy the rolling terrain of the Triangle but I know he’ll miss the moose. Well Dunne! John.

He’s decamping his CS Marketing role at Tribune’s KDVR in Denver.  Kelly’s a Florida Gator who’s gotten to live and promo in Honolulu, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Tucson, New Orleans, and New York at MSNBC. KIRO’s CSD CHLOE HOUSER has landed herself ‘a catch’ as her new Brand Manager. JIM MARKETTI is heading to Seattle and he starts next Monday. The University of Wisconsin-Madison grad started as a news photog at WITI in Milwaukee and transitioned to promo there, and that led to being Exec Producer Ad and Promo at KSTP in Minneapolis. Chicago was the next market where he was Promo Manager at FOX WFLD then at NBC’s WMAQ. He went back to WFLD as a member of the VP Club. Jim’s also been doing his promo magic for Weigel Broadcasting and was Creative Director for the Local Station Group for them. He’s been busy over at WLS in Chicago lately. You need to give him a hearty Well Dunne! Jim!

There’s a connection between St. Louis and the Tampa area. For ages, the baseball Cardinals held spring camp across the Bay in St. Petersburg. Tampa has all the fun in the sun possibilities the Midwest lacks. And now Tampa has another St. Louis connection because DON BOHAC has joined CSD DENNIS ELSBURY’s creative team at ABC affil WFTS; he’s the new multimedia marketing producer. In The Lou, he was promo producing for KMOV. He’s a southern gent who interned at WSB in Atlanta then went out to El Paso doing Topicals for KFOX. He did a stint at KIRO in Seattle, too. Very cool. TGIF on the first day of June. And today’s spotlight is on Well Dunne! Talent’s MELANIE HAYNES, who is an actress on camera and a voice talent behind it. Come June 16, her film Antiquities will be part of the Dances With Films at TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood. She has the part of eccentric Aunt Patty in the film which also stars Andrew West of The Walking Dead, Ashley Green of Twilight fame and Mary Steenburgen who was just in Book Club.  The Kansas-born lady talent lives a very exciting life away from her mic, splitting her time between LA and Houston. You really need to give Mel a listen and remember her when you look for a female voice. Well Dunne! Melanie.

The American southwest is one of a kind. There’s nothing exactly like it, even though there are deserts that dwarf it in size and scope. But here in the states, our desert has brought forth art and history and mythology…mesas and vistas….saguaro cacti. Cowboys and westerns. The one thing missing (ok, there’s a few, but work with me here) is green. It’s pretty sparse and far between. Trees, flowers, grass…not so much. And rain. Well, you guys east of the Mississippi have had more than your fair share, while the west side of the river has been pretty dry. When BEN BATES takes the Multimedia Marketing Producer slot at Atlanta’s WXIA, he’ll be returning to the green that’s he’s missed while in Albuquerque as Assistant CSD for Hearst’s KOAT. Ben’s first TV job was at WVLA in Baton Rouge before he made the jump to KDVR in Denver. Both green. He then did a turn at Craftsy Network in the Mile High City before heading to DEILIA WILLIAMS’ creative team in The Q. A big thanks to him for pointing out that southern sweet tea is available at Chick-fil-A for those who crave it and are not in areas where it’s served most anywhere. Big Well Dunne! Ben.

Yes, Austin is one of the coolest cities. Is it the music? Willie may live in Maui but he still visits Austin a lot. Is it the students? Lots of Longhorns in addition to the world’s second largest brick building. Bonus points to you if you know the first, comrade. Is Austin cool because of the gathering of new ideas and people who give those ideas a run? Well there is that.  Point being that the Texas capital is one cool market, and it’s where DAVID SQUIRES has worked for a good number of years. David has just been promoted to Vice President of Creative Services at KTBC there. Great choice…the man is a grad of Mizzou. For those who need a little mental jumpstart, Mizzou is University of Missouri located in Columbia. Noted for their journalism school, which is perhaps the best around. David started his TV career in Columbia at KMIZ where he punched newscasts. He punched news in Palm Springs at KESQ before jumping to the promotion department at KNTV in the San Francisco area. He then went to St. Louis’ KSDK before heading down river to Memphis where he was Promo Manager for WHBQ. He took the Promo Manager slot in Austin twice…with a Creative Director stint in between. Now he’s running the show and I can only imagine how hot marketing is amongst the bluebonnets. A Texas-size Well Dunne! David.

See ya’ll next Tuesday. Be safe.

TROY MCDONALD JR is the new member of CSD PAUL CHAPLIN’s creative crew at CBS affil WLKY in Louisville. Post Derby, L’ville is a great little city and Troy’s making the switch from Tribune’s CBS affil WTKR oceanside in the Norfolk, Virginia market. Well, not exactly Oceanside, but close to the bay and really downtown, but hey… Troy’s background started on the college radio station where he was on-air and did it all. First job in TV was running camera at WLJT in Martin, TN where he went to college. He was a Graphic Designer for Raycom in Memphis at WMC as well. Paul is thrilled to have him contributing as a writer producer for the Hearst station. Well Dunne! Troy.

CSD STEVE PATRICK of Nexstar’s duop WIBV/WNLO in Buffalo looked outside the run-of-the-mill ‘hire a producer’ situation and found a talented, enthusiastic candidate to add to his promo team. Welcome SARAH SIGNORELLI to the CBS/CW operation. Ms. Sarah has been creative via graphics and marketing for several operations in The Nickel City. Sidebar: That nickname comes from the back of the five-cent piece, which is, of course, a buffalo. Back to Sarah – she writes for Buffalo Spree, which is the cutting edge magazine. Did an internship at WGRZ there. She was a triple major in college: communications, journalism and digital media arts. Rare and wonderful indeed. That deserves a three-time Well Dunne! Sarah.

Don’t you love ‘outside the norm’ promotions? The kind that make you say “Wish I could have done that.” There’s a video to support the next Jurassic Park movie that is not only spot-on directorially, but is hilarious to boot. Give it a gander.

It never fails…when you run across someone and you know they’re going to be a star. Going to stand out and be amazing. Words to describe it (and that could be the word – It) are hard to come by and frankly are like reading a white wine description. It’s close but doesn’t really nail what you want to say. But you know. Such was the case with BROOKE DEARBORN. She was a participant in a Topical Boot Camp SYD RUBIN and I did for CBS’ WBZ in Boston. SEAN BARNACOAT had assembled an A-List team of promo and news pros ready to sharpen their topical skills…and they were attentive to the max. Brooke had that “sumin-sumin” as Oprah would say. Now she has a new job over at the FOX station in Beantown. Hate to see CBS lose her, but we all move on as we grow.  Brooke has a very interesting background in promotions: Promo Producer for NECN as well as WWE plus time at Jerry Springer Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Boston U grad deserves a hearty Well Dunne! Brooke.

Think About This:  “The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”  ~  C JoyBell C

A pathfinder has passed. She was bold, brash, profane, dedicated, passionate, colorful in all ways, absolutely loved her dogs and her job, and in the end, was ravaged by that torturer dementia. MARTHA PELL STANVILLE passed away yesterday, May 17, after fighting the ghost fight against the condition that robs a person of what makes them unique. A southern belle raised in Macon, Georgia, she never lost her lovely accent and fell in love with TV when she took at job, at 19, at WMAZ in her hometown. Her dreams of musical theatre stardom were replaced by the excitement of TV marketing. Along the way, she was President of American Women in Radio and Television and worked at WCCO in Minneapolis as well as leading TV affiliates in top markets. At NBC TV Network she was VP of Affiliate Advertising and Promotion Services and was noted for her amazing parties. She was like a bulldog about admission, btw, and she never missed a trick or nametag. She was a redhead and could cut an imposing figure when needed. She went to work at Fred Hayman when he as THE perfume man in Bev Hills and she knew everybody…and they knew her. For over 50 years, she brought creativity, fun, and a joi de vivre – je ne sait quoi to everything. She will be missed by many, many people. God bless ya Martha.

Think About This: “The secret to being happy is having a sense of humor and a dirty mind.”  ~  James Pettit, as inspired by Martha Pell Stanville.

A real Jersey girl or guy knows the difference between Tenafly and Cresskill. If you don’t, you should since one never knows when that bit of info can come in handy, even if you aren’t close to the zip at all. Cresskill is where JOHN FORGETTA calls home, and he calls WKYC, the NBC affil in Cleveland, his new place of business. He’s the recently hired Marketing Director, calling GM MICKI BYRNES boss, the lucky guy. The Weslyan grad has a wonderful background as brand strategist and communications for several large insurance concerns and has even been Editorial Director for American Greetings. That sounds like a blast. Most interesting former slot – Deputy Editor of the LA Times in LA of course. Let’s give him a rousing Well Dunne! John!

Job Alert – Sr. Writer Producer WREG Memphis
