Got several announcements awaiting the corporate okee-dokee, so nobody in particular is being highlighted here today. Gotta say there’s a lot of ‘stay put and keep your head down’ out there in TV marketing world.

Job Alert – Associate Creative Director HBO NYC

Well, the totally unscientific but totally creative group of writers, producers and art directors that constitute the bulk of daily contacts all seem in agreement….the Super Bowl spots were, by and large, $5 million that might have been better spent elsewhere. A brilliant attorney (he does Supreme Court cases) was confused by several, and, as stated, this guy is top of the smart chart. Was it a manner of many spots being too cool for the room? My dad never got confused looking at spots in the SB although he never could figure out why McArthur Park left the cake out in the rain.  Is there some kind of communication shorthand going on? Is it generational? The age range for the unscientific pros starts at 27, so that can’t be it. Just wondering why some spots left viewers scratching their heads. Is confusion a way to drive sales? Is ironic sarcasm a new ad category?

Another creative light has gone out. STEFAN GERBER passed away while in surgery on Thursday. Gerber was a master of words….a man whose ability to communicate was unparalleled. A former colleague said he learned from him…such things as ‘take the last idea on a piece of copy and use that last line as the first line for the rewrite.” That was the essence of Stefan – pushing you to think one step beyond the obvious. Brilliant. Strong. Gerber was one of the names and leaders of the uber-creative LA-based Jacobs & Gerber agency. They employed the top of the line talents of the day, devising award-winning as well as ratings generating work for many of the CBS operating units, ie Entertainment, O&O’s and News. In recent years, Stefan was the Creative Director for Air Planet at Planet 365. A UCLA grad with a Masters degree in English, he did his undergrad work at Berkeley. His talent must have been genetic; his sons went into the advertising industry. Please think of his family and remember to push yourself beyond the safe zone. All our work becomes our legacy.

MIKE BENSON, Head of Marketing for Amazon Studios, has got one hot, hot, hot promo for the upcoming Amazon Prime Original Series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. It’s 60 seconds and it’s going to run in the SuperBowl. Yep, a full minute in THE game.  Starring ‘you loved him on The Office’ John Krasinski in the lead role with New Orleans’ Wendell Pierce as well. The series doesn’t hit our screens until August 31, so this is a total tease. Yes, Benson is still doing kick-it work and the spot seems destined for a “best Super Bowl spots’ perch. Well Dunne! Mike and crew.

What? Hard to get hold of? Moi? Yes, but that’s what happens when one shoots a TV pilot. Details, in all their adorableness, to come. I’ll get back to everybody….be cool.

Her degree is from Ohio University and she worked in Columbus right after college at  WSYX/WTTE. She’s going to shine, n’est-ce pas? Oui Well Dunne! Kelly.

In a world where ‘instant’ and ‘disposable’ are considered assets – and  at the same time being in a business where keeping a slot for more than five years puts one in rarified strata, you can imagine how amazing  it is to find a pro who earned a career of 35 years in one spot. Happily. It’s a rate thing for someone in TV marketing to get to retire (and afford to) so let’s hear it for KIP BOHNE, who has said goodbye to WSYM, the Scipps’ owned FOX affil in Lansing, Michigan. He started the new year sans alarm clock and marching to only his own drummer. Kip has done a lot at the station, including being instrumental in building the operation from the ground up, clocking in for the first time in 1982. He was named Promotion Manager shortly after that. The station was known as WFSL in those days. Kip has his diploma from Michigan State in East Lansing. He loves media – his wife was an anchor in the market until her retirement. Sounds like Kip had the best of all worlds – loving his job and having fun at the same time. A huge Well Dunne! Kip.

Lively and talented MICHAEL LEACH is headed to Albany, Georgia’s NBC/ABC operation WALB as the new Director of Marketing and Audience Development. Give yourself two gold stars this Monday morning if you ID’d Albany as the birthplace of Ray Charles. And yes, you can visit and see a life size statue of the one and only Ray. Michael is departing Winston-Salem where he was with Hearst’s WXII, first as CSD and then as Operations Manager. Michael, who holds a degree from SUNY Fredonia, learned the promo game while writing and producing for Nexstar’s WROC in Rochester, New York. His enthusiasm is catchy and he’ll bring a real spark to the market. Well Dunne! Michael.

Between everybody having the flu, the cold-as-a-brass-bra weather, the ridiculous upgrades demanded all at once, and one too many conference calls/corporate deadlines/bright ideas…well TGIF people. T.G.I.F. Want to know a guy (did that sound Chicago-ese?) who is bright, witty and funny? And he does TV promo? Come on down DAVID MOTT, a Florida guy who is in the mountains of West Virginia doing a job that elicits the response ‘Sweet!’. He’s Promo Manager at Nexstar’s WVNS. What a lovely ‘find’… because creatives who don’t possess wit, intelligence and talent plus a sense of humor are, well, let’s just leave it at that. David…for no reason other than you elicited real laughter from a hurried and semi-cranky blogger…Well Dunne!

Love the new MSNBC promos. Although one must ask…when did lip flap become an accepted thing? Asking for a friend.

The South isn’t used to snow. Or the kind of cold temps that are visiting at the moment. So let’s talk about warm and fun…how about talking about…Hawaii. Or more so, saying Aloha to Hawaii. What? Leave Hawaii? Yes, one does come and go from the islands (ask someone about island fever) and yet one’s heart stays on the white sandy beaches. The heart has moved west…it couldn’t afford to be in San Francisco. Back on track, let’s hear it for post-TV creative KAREN FUJII who is heading to Seattle. Actually, she’s there now. Just arrived on the mainland. There in the home of Starbucks and Nordstrom, she’ll be be Director of Marketing and Communications for Seattle University. She’s been studying at University of Hawaii at Manoa and is thrilled to be, as she puts it, closer to her friends in Europe yet sad she’ll be further from the friends in New Zealand and Australia. The lady is SO global! She’s worked in Denmark and at WJKS (as it was known then) in Jacksonville. As soon as she settles into Seattle (which is in search of a new nickname….) and unpacks tons of boxes, she’ll be out and about. Buy her a latte or a Northwest fish and make her feel at home.  Well Dunne! Karen.

Yes, there is life after TV and it’s glorious. That’s today’s mantra.

Everybody has coping methods for life. Some people swim…or play tennis…or paint. Some cook or clean or meditate. Or all or some of these activities. It’s always amazing to watch someone grab life and reshape it like a statue of clay that needs attention. When CHRISSY FUNK reached one of those “important life moments” she got out her hiking boots and took to the Appalachian Trail. If you don’t know about hiking the trail, then look it up and be amazed. Chrissy found herself on the trail…not that she ever lost who she was. But like all artwork, she became more complex, more deep, more interesting. The lady who has a solid core of “I can do this” now knows she can do ANYTHING. And what she’s going to do is head back to Palm Beach (ah, just in time for The Season, my dear) where she’ll be heading up Creative for WPEC, the Sinclair CBS affil. Ms. Chrissy is no stranger to PB – she was head of creative for Scripps there. And before that, she was working with one of the very best (and favorite) SHERRY CARPENTER at WJXT in Jacksonville. Other stations where she learned and did award-winning creative include KDVR in Denver, WTAE in Pittsburgh and WTEN in Albany. She’s just amazing…you should know her. She inspires. And she has the most adorable pug dogs! One-two-three … Well Dunne! Chrissy!

Think creativity is just something one does or ‘gets’…well, it’s really more complex and it’s all in the brain…Thanks to The Guardian for the article.

LA and Santa Barbara areas…they just can’t catch a break. First massive fires now deadly mudslides. The 101 is closed as of this writing and who knows what else is going to happen as heavy rain hits bald mountains. There are no words for the jobs of the first responders who have been there in every way. You need to let them know how outstanding their efforts are. Now for some good news out of LA…it deals with a major cabler and a great guy. JOSEPH C JOHNSON has a new gig – Executive Director Creative Services at Starz. Mr. J started his TV marketing on a station level in Seattle at KCPQ, and from there went to the Hallmark Channel in LA as Sr. Creative Director. FX Networks was the next beneficiary of his talents then it was freelancing for NBC and ABC before snagging a great upward slot at Warner Bros. He had most recently been their VP Creative Services On-Air for the Warner Bros Entertainment Group. Very exciting new challenge Joe.  They’ll have starz in their eyes! Well Dunne!

When you talk with JIM SHOWERS, you can hear his intelligence and his enthusiasm. He’s got it, and that it isn’t the flu that’s making everybody miserable. Yesterday (if you’re reading this on Tuesday) was his first day as Creative Services Manager at NBC affil WILX in East Lansing. (BTW, there is a plain ol’ Lansing, and it’s Michigan’s capital, and it’s just west of East Lansing, but we digress…) Jim comes to Michigan from the mountains of east Tennessee where he headed up marketing for WJHL in Johnson City. Gorgeous part of the world. He’s a northwest guy with a degree from the University of Idaho and a Masters from Washington State University. He’s been a creative guy at TV stations in Idaho, Joplin, Mo, Wyoming, and Spartanburg, SC. Along the way he handled athletic media relations for the University of Wyoming (points for knowing the mascots are Pistol Pete and Cowboy Joe). Great guy is gonna heat up the new slot…which is a terrific idea this time of year. Well Dunne! Jim.

STEVEN BEVELS was busy doing POP’s on Friday…there was snow, ice and that whole winter bomb thing along the coast and his News people had done an amazing job covering it. The where in question is Wilmington, NC. He’s a North Carolina man who was born in the Tar Heel state over in Asheville but has spent his career mainly on the coast. Talk about lucky…best of both worlds. He’s been working doing training (he being the trainer) for Raycom and now he’s Marketing Director of WECT and WSFX, NBC and Fox respectively in the Cape Fear locale. Steven has a degree from UNC-Wilmington and has done commercial production for them. He sounds very happy and that’s such a plus in today’s world. Stay warm and enjoy it all. Good advice for all of us. Well Dunne! Steven.

While so many of you deal with extreme cold, wind and snow, let’s warm ourselves with good news from Louisville, Kentucky, where their famous mint julep might prove warming if accompanied by a nice roaring fireplace. Taking over the main creative seat at Raycom’s WAVE TV is KRIS BAETE. His official new title, and one that Raycom appears to prefer to the old title of CSD…Kris’ biz card now says Director of Marketing and Audience Development. Sounds good. Kris has been at the NBC affil first as the On-Air Promotion Manager then as Digital Markting Manager. The Western Kentucky U grad has a real eye for film which no doubt makes the viewers of Louisville happy in the long run. Good folks getting ahead…deserves a big ol’ 2018 style Well Dunne!

What is it about creative people? Is it the sense of humor that permeates their thoughts? Their view of life that always delights or disturbs? The witty repartee? What possibly makes creative people even more special than all the above is the ability to see a bigger picture and reinvent themselves. And with the broadcast sector still vainly searching for an economic model that rewards creative not bean counters, reinventing is a grand skill. ROB THOMAS is doing that. The call of his home state, Arkansas, lured him to return. And like a confident creative, he set out to find a way to keep his banker happy. And he has. Rob is happy and, as a super great family man, enjoying being in Fayetteville where he’s now working in sales for Tribune’s KFSM. Fayetteville, btw, has made the list of the five best places to live in the US. Let’s face it, promo and marketing people (more about titles and how they’ve become muddy and useless tomorrow) can sell the dickens out of anything, especially TV. Rob’s done promo for stations in Little Rock and Louisville. Let’s give him the first 2018 Well Dunne!

There are a lot of Rob Thomases (is that how you grammatically make Thomas plural?) in TV. Two were doing promo in Louisville at one time. Oy! Just sayin’.

So what do you want to be this year? Let’s all help each other find a way to make it all happen. Cooperation is key…never forget that. As the motto on my office wall says: Keep Moving Forward.

Turn off your mobile devices. Do it. Go within. Read. Write uninterrupted. Eat carbs and sugar. Think about something familiar in an entirely new way. Make mistakes. Clean them up. Light a candle or a fire. Listen. Stay warm. Stay cool. Get naked or get dressed up. Call your best friend, your mother or your old boyfriend/girlfriend. Binge watch. Have a great New Years Eve while we kick that nasty SOB 2017 to the curb and we open the door for 2018.

The year’s winding down, and between us all, good riddance. This has been one nasty slog – what a tough 365 days. We all lost people we love…said goodbye to talented people who made the world better. Watched as truth was turned on its head and the idea that we had fallen down a rabbit hole kept popping to mind. Some of us were doing two – three – jobs combined into one with no bump in pay and absolutely no respect for the amazing job so well done. Hopping off the soapbox…but first….declaring 2018 the year when creativity will stop being the Rodney Dangerfield of business. More to come. Hang on…

MICHAEL LEVER is getting 2018 off to a great start…getting used to his new job, which is a promotion. Michel has been over at FOX and is now Senior Manager Affiliate Marketing for FBC. Let’s send him great happy wishes for continued fun. The LaSalle grad is  on the west coast. All you folks out east…stay warm…but Well Dunne! Michael.

What better place to get the Christmas spirit than Alaska, where JOHN RICE’s neighbor has a pet reindeer. Yes, in Anchorage. John, who is heading up the Denali Media properties marketing and such, even had a close encounter with a 9 foot moose in his driveway. The moose was chill, in more ways than one, and took a nap nearby. For those Christmas-holics amongst us, Anchorage should be on your list. Christmas Eve weather forecast is for snow. Doesn’t that sound lovely! Well Dunne! John and Happy Christmas.

Definitely need more hours in the day. All in favor? Let’s take a moment from logs, last minute family matters, grocery emergency runs and traffic to think about the amazing good your operations can bring about. Take, for instance, CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN of 2C Media. There isn’t anybody who puts their heart into helping like these two and their whole company. They have made the children of Puerto Rico happy after a horrible hurricane. Chris and Carla et all have tirelessly raised funds, wrangled airlines and even delivered presents themselves – all to make a difference.  It’s what getting up in the morning is all about. To say Well Dunne! is just not enough.
