This winter has been particularly difficult. In late February, BRIAN LUSK passed away suddenly. Brian was a great friend as well as the social media manager for Southwest Airlines – a pioneer in social media. Southwest gave him the room to do a fabulous job, and their social presence is considered one of the best in the country. Of course, he learned marketing at SMU.

Today I found out a former promotions pro passed away Monday evening in San Antonio. CHERYL PORTER was at KSAT, ABC in San Antonio through several owners and ended up running the department. She was organized, intelligent and taught those around her the things that college fails to impart. Working with her was a real pleasure. She left TV to work where her heart was happy – a church. She will be missed.

The Bay Area – just thinking about San Francisco and environs is exciting for most people. If you’re CHRIS FARRIS, it’s not only exciting, it’s now home. CHRIS is the new Sr. Writer Producer at NBC Bay Area, working under Brand Manager WES RODDA. In making the move, Chris went from the Atlantic to the Pacific, moving from his slot as Promotion Manager at WBAL in Baltimore. He’s a Kansas grad (a Jayhawk) who has worked his way up in markets like Augusta, Maine and Topeka, Kansas. A California Well Dunne! Chris.

‘The Hat’ is back. If you got that email and work at CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento,  then you know it’s the way the station welcomed back PAUL KRAMER, now Promotion Manager under CSD DON SMITH. Paul wrote and produced at KOVR before heading across town to be Creative Services Production Manager at FOX affil KTXL.  The San Francisco State University grad also worked at American Zoetrope – yep the Coppola and Lucas film studio. What did he do there in his seven years?  He did just about everything. And how did he get the moniker ‘The Hat’? By wearing the same one. Easy question.  A big Well Dunne to you Paul.

Abilene, Texas is just down the Interstate from Sweetwater, home of the big rattlesnake roundup. Yeah, not on the Bucket List, but interesting nonetheless.  When the brave and bold KAREN YARBROUGH (KTAB’s Creative leader) showed up at said event, just this last Friday, she showed more chutzpah than anyone else I know in TV when she skinned a rattlesnake…yes, she really skilled a rattlesnake. Perhaps a belt or the start of a great purse? Amazingly Well Dunne! Karen.

GABRIEL REDONDO is one of those lucky guys who was born, raised and now works in one of America’s most amazing locales – San Antonio TX. He’s been at NBC affil WOAI (which is on the river, btw…a very cool spot in the Spurs’  hometown) as part of their creative effort, and is now going to head up the department. He has his broadcasting degree from Texas State University at San Marcus, noted for LBJ’s alma mater. San Marcus is also noted for the amazing outlet mall. Just sayin. Well Dunne! Gabriel.

Speaking of WOAI, let’s hear it for former CSD DAVID STOTTS who has gone to work for the NBA San Antonio Spurs. Well Dunne! David.

Miami’s 2C Media is smokin’ hot. They just finished a project for The Weather Channel. It’s all the promos for the new show Hacking the Planet . The promos highlighted both hand drawn animation with 2D and 3D illustrations.  2C Prez CHRIS SLOAN has been having a very creative year. Well Dunne!

Scooting through the Midwest between blizzards (sidebar – get apology from that nasty little groundhog up in Pennsylvania who promised spring) is the relatively daunting task facing a TV creative who’s “one to watch”.  LACY LEVASSEUR is the traveler in question. She has traversed a route from Hearst’s WISN in Milwaukee to Cox’s WSOC in Charlotte. Along for the journey is Lacy’s hubby and her 7 month old daughter, Perry. Ms. Lacy will continue to do her fab creative promo writing and producing in The Queen City but will miss WISN CSD LAUREN RIDGLEY like mad. Ms. Lacy is a California girl as well as a Michigan State grad who has worked in Palm Springs, and I bet she’s missing those perfect desert temps. A big Well Dunne! to Lacy. Call when you are safe in Charlotte. We need to make sure she’s not stuck in all that snow.

Thank you for all your caring thoughts on the death of my mother, Marylu Dunne. She was in the radio business, and many of her friends went on to be the pioneers of TV  in St. Louis, our hometown. She is now, no doubt, reunited with all the wonderfully crazy co-workers and friends she worked with. How I wish there was a copy of her radio show, which aired during WWII – Saturday morning she would do a roundup on the availability of rationed items at area markets. There is no question that I inherited the broadcast gene as well as the shopping gene from her. Mahalo.
