ROBYN KEENEY was a standout from the get-go. A star at the Topical Boot Camp, she was doing promo for Sinclair in San Antonio, at Fox KABB for TERRY McFARLANE at the time. Shortly thereafter, she made the switch to CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento but, once you fall in love with Texas (and she loves horses and is quite the equestrian) it’s always luring you back. And it has. Robyn begins the later part of the month at CBS in Houston, KHOU. It will be a real challenge, since she’ll be around while they build a station, their Allen Parkway locale having been flooded then sold. If anybody is up to the task, it’s Robyn. So thrilled for her. Well Dunne! Robyn.
Meanwhile, another Houston item deals with the long-empty slot at WLS-TV in Chicago vacated by now-GM CURTIS MILES. It’s finally filled. ABC is bringing up DAVID LEE from their station in …wait for it…Houston. David will be wrangling the local programming in addition to the marketing and creative for the Windy City news and programming. Official title will be VP Audience Development and Creative Services. He’s a guy from the great American west (namely a grad of Montana State U) who’s worked for ABC in Fresno and been with KXLY in Spokane as well as KMSP in Minneapolis. Well Dunne! David.

Kicking off the first March Monday with two, count ‘em two, promotions of former marketing promo pros to GM helms. VP GM’s to be specific. Wahoo! Let’s begin about the new General Manager in Cape Girardeau MO. It’s CHRIS CONROY who will take the corner office at CBS affil KFVS and sister station WB affil WQWQ, both owned by Raycom. He’ll be leaving his GM slot at KAIT in Jonesboro, Arkansas, his first GM slot. The Florida native has some heavy weight marketing chops from his work at WAGA in Atlanta where he was Promo Manager, WBRC in Birmingham where he was VP Creative Services and WMC in Memphis where he began as Marketing Director and was then upped to Regional Director of Marketing. He’s got what it takes. Big Well Dunne! Chris.
Our second exciting GM announcement is for PETER NOLL (pictured) who has been named General Manager of WNBJ, NBC for Western Tennessee licensed to Jackson. Pete has been with Waypoint Media heading up their corporate Marketing and Promotion. His first GM slot was in Bakersfield at the Scripps affil there, KERO. Pete’s been with ABC Net Affiliate Relations as well as spinning creative marketing in Cleveland and Tulsa. Big Well Dunne! Peter!

And in this corner…northwest major market…hailing from Roseburg, Oregan and on her way up the ladder is – ding ding ding – NANCY MacDONALD. Could you picture the referee and feel the boxing concept there? Read it again and see if you do. OK, good. Nancy is the recently promoted News Brand Manager at currently-Tribune’s FOX affil Q13 in Seattle. She had been Creative Services Coordinator but got the bump in the last few weeks. Yeah, during the February book, so that means she was swimming in deep water off the bat. The lovely lady started out in TV as the Creative Services Production Assistant at KPIC in the afore-mentioned Roseburg. She confides that she doesn’t own a dog or cat, but has a Godzilla action figure on her desk. Alright alright alright! Did we mention she works with the amazing SYD RUBIN who wrangles News promotion there at KCPQ? Well Dunne! Nancy.

Thursday is getting a “This and That” treatment today. Just a lot of things happening and no time to talk and verify new jobs landed, like the two at Q13 (FOX in Seattle…that info is for tomorrow). So here’s a few items, a job and something for your heart…
Have you ever heard “the gates are wide open”? In an Irish household, the phrase was used when more than one person passed away in a short amount of time. At the moment, the gates are w-i-d-e open and St. Peter must have gone high tech to process all the souls. Nexstar in Rochester’s ED CRONY has the greatest family. Send them your best thoughts and comfort…his two daughters and his lovely wife have lost their grandmother and mother. Well Dunne! Talent’s JOEY V’s father passed away earlier in the week on the west coast. And TIM SANDERS of WTWO lost his grandmother Wednesday.
Former Promo Pro MARTY SCHLESINGER, who now is the bicycle king of San Antonio (my title, not his…he’s too cool for that moniker) is on the mend from a health scare. But all is well and his sense of humor is totally mended.
Holy cow…a newly placed head of marketing – one with no TV experience – actually asked her staff what a Topical was. Yep, that sure did happen. OMG. I’ll never tell where.
This weekend, AMANDA FORD of WPTV in Palm Beach is getting married…as is former promo pro LAUREL PORTIE (The List, KTVT) who ‘s tying the knot in Malibu. Happiness.

Heading to a new job and much better weather is one of the best around, J.R. VANWASSENHOVE. Unashamedly a favorite. He’s taking the Promo Manager slot at Graham Media’s WKMG, the CBS station in Orlando. Extra bonus points for those who know that WKMG stands for Katherine M Graham, the female media exec who really knew what leadership meant. She was amazing. If you don’t know about her…google it. Better, read a book about her or, if needs must, watch The Post and marvel at how much Meryl Streep looks like her. Back to our man J.R. who left a sweet slot at one of the best TV shops around, WBNS in Columbus. He had a great boss (talking to you LARRY WATZMAN) so why did J.R. leave? To take care of his dad who fought a very brave, very long cancer battle. As a matter of fact, J.R. has made several decisions based on family needs…and that makes him what Midwesterners call ‘good people.’ J.R. is one of those amazing Full Sail creative who has put the magic in work for Fox Sports South, WXIA in Atlanta, and WLWT in Cincinnati. WKMG CSD KYM PEOPLES has gotten tres lucky and all good things are going to happen. Shout out to HR person deluxe DONNA ANSLEY. BTW, J.R., the Big O has grown like mad since you were last Winter Parking but you’ll know your basic way around.. . Well Dunne! J.R.

Birmingham is about to explode in spring flowering trees and will look like what spring is supposed to look like. Good thing that DANIELLE JOHNSON is going to be there to enjoy such natural beauty. Ms. Danielle is the new Assistant Creative Services Director of Hearst’s NBC affil WVTM. She’s been down at Scripps WPTV in Palm Beach doing multi-media producing for CSD JAMES GRIFFEL. Before that, the University of South Florida grad was over at Scripps Tulsa operation KJRH. As they used to say in the days of Billboard Magazine, she’s one to watch. He started his promo marketing career as a writer producer at VH1. Of course he’s Atlanta based.

CHLOE HOUSER is the lucky lady who has worked and lived in both locales, and just recently she solidified a new position that will keep her amongst the trees and the tossed fish at the Pike Place Market. Ms. Chloe was promoted to Creative Services Director at CBS affil KIRO. She had been Promotion Manager so she knows her way around the place. A grad of Eastern Washington U, she got her feet wet as Promo Coordinator then Promo Manager in Spokane at KAYU. Then a jump to Portland where the lovely Chloe was an on-air host as well as promo producer then Promo Manager for KPTV before being promoted to CSD. ABC Network founder and broadcast icon LEONARD GOLDENSON achieved amazing things. In the last interview of his life, sitting on his sofa overlooking the Gulf from his penthouse on Longboat Key, he shared what he was most proud of. It was his non-business endeavors that he championed. Using his power, money, influence, time and energy, he reached out and made a positive difference. He co-founded United Cerebral Palsy, an affliction his daughter Cookie was born with, putting the first UCP telethon on what is now WBBM in Chicago. His most proud achievement was being instrumental in the American With Disabilities Act, which was recently gutted by people in DC. This is a challenge to all the ABC employees and bosses to step up and, in the spirit of Mr. Goldenson, to reverse these changes that abandon the most vulnerable of us. It’s the right thing to do.
Think About This: “do you know why dogs are so quick to wag their tails and cats are so quick to purr? Even the ones that have been lonely, abused, and betrayed? Because, as is true of all animals, they were instilled with the distant awareness that no matter what the world shows them, they’re still deeply loved and needed, that their presence alone has made a difference, and that in just the shake of a leg, seemingly without reason or rhyme, everything can FANTASTICALLY change for the better. As is true of all people, except sometimes they tend to forget. ~ The Universe (tut.com)

Kathie’s been in Austin quite some time, so she’s no doubt got a lot of packing to do. Let’s all wish her a Well Dunne!
What can one do when one fails to live up to a promise? Humbly apologize and hope that it’s a learning situation. Such is the case with the one and wonderful BONNIE BARCLAY, whose involvement with Andrew Young Foundation’s documentaries had a high note last Friday evening, when their latest doc hit the airwaves in Tampa, Detroit, Mobile, Minneapolis, Macon and Tallahassee. Nicole, who is helming the marketing area of NBC affil KSDK in the Arch City, has come over from New Jersey, where in a family-run little place, this writer has personally enjoyed a pizza that rivals the one and only Farrottos. She also held marketing slots for Johnsonville Sausages and Wells Dairies. Her degree is from Western Washington University. Get over to The Hill Nicole and let us know what you like best. Well, the totally unscientific but totally creative group of writers, producers and art directors that constitute the bulk of daily contacts all seem in agreement….the Super Bowl spots were, by and large, $5 million that might have been better spent elsewhere. A brilliant attorney (he does Supreme Court cases) was confused by several, and, as stated, this guy is top of the smart chart. Was it a manner of many spots being too cool for the room? My dad never got confused looking at spots in the SB although he never could figure out why McArthur Park left the cake out in the rain. Is there some kind of communication shorthand going on? Is it generational? The age range for the unscientific pros starts at 27, so that can’t be it. Just wondering why some spots left viewers scratching their heads. Is confusion a way to drive sales? Is ironic sarcasm a new ad category?

Another creative light has gone out. STEFAN GERBER passed away while in surgery on Thursday. Gerber was a master of words….a man whose ability to communicate was unparalleled. A former colleague said he learned from him…such things as ‘take the last idea on a piece of copy and use that last line as the first line for the rewrite.” That was the essence of Stefan – pushing you to think one step beyond the obvious. Brilliant. Strong. Gerber was one of the names and leaders of the uber-creative LA-based Jacobs & Gerber agency. They employed the top of the line talents of the day, devising award-winning as well as ratings generating work for many of the CBS operating units, ie Entertainment, O&O’s and News. In recent years, Stefan was the Creative Director for Air Planet at Planet 365. A UCLA grad with a Masters degree in English, he did his undergrad work at Berkeley. His talent must have been genetic; his sons went into the advertising industry. Please think of his family and remember to push yourself beyond the safe zone. All our work becomes our legacy.

MIKE BENSON, Head of Marketing for Amazon Studios, has got one hot, hot, hot promo for the upcoming Amazon Prime Original Series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Starring ‘you loved him on The Office’ John Krasinski in the lead role with New Orleans’ Wendell Pierce as well. The series doesn’t hit our screens until August 31, so this is a total tease. Yes, Benson is still doing kick-it work and the spot seems destined for a “best Super Bowl spots’ perch. Well Dunne! Mike and crew.

In a world where ‘instant’ and ‘disposable’ are considered assets – and at the same time being in a business where keeping a slot for more than five years puts one in rarified strata, you can imagine how amazing it is to find a pro who earned a career of 35 years in one spot. Happily. It’s a rate thing for someone in TV marketing to get to retire (and afford to) so let’s hear it for KIP BOHNE, who has said goodbye to WSYM, the Scipps’ owned FOX affil in Lansing, Michigan. He started the new year sans alarm clock and marching to only his own drummer. Kip has done a lot at the station, including being instrumental in building the operation from the ground up, clocking in for the first time in 1982. He was named Promotion Manager shortly after that. The station was known as WFSL in those days. Kip has his diploma from Michigan State in East Lansing. He loves media – his wife was an anchor in the market until her retirement. Sounds like Kip had the best of all worlds – loving his job and having fun at the same time. A huge Well Dunne! Kip.
