It was nearly a year ago that BEN READ was written up as the new CSD at KBJR, the Quincy Newspaper-owned NBC affil in Duluth, Minnesota. And yet…it didn’t hit the blog. No doubt it was before the Word Press classes and all. So let’s play Catchup Monday and give out a shout to Ben, who’s been doing a great job in what might be the coolest place in the US at the moment. Mid to low 70’s this week. Ben brought tons of talent to the job, as well as a stint being Assistant CSD at one time. Sorry for the delay Ben, but please accept a hearty Well Dunne!

What’s with some employers (stations, networks, cable nets, agencies, etc) who are creative in scope…what’s with them asking for a TON of work, input, ideas even scripts (!) as a requisite for getting a job? Do they really want all that FREE creative just handed to them? Can they not read a resume and look at former work to determine whether you are their cup of tea? Should you ‘bend the knee’ and do it then submit an invoice for consulting? Seems to me an entity that does this is NOT one that any real creative would want to work for. If the employer is this insipid as to creative people, imagine how awful it would be to try to deal with them daily. This paragraph is entirely the thoughts of this writer and is not intended to portray any known entity, blah blah blah…

Austin, Texas is about to welcome back the 50,950 students (!) who attend the University there. Yeah, a lot of students, surpassed only the University of Central Florida in Orlando. But we digress. Back to Austin, the city of Longhorns, SXSW, and the one and only Willie Nelson. It’s also home to DAX DOBBS, who’s been named Director of Marketing at Nexstar’s NBC affil there, KXAN. Dax has a sheepskin from University of Southern California in LA….in Film of course. He has some interesting gigs in the film world, including working with the coolest producer, Lynda Obst.  He produced for Pilgrim Films and then went to Austin to produce for the Sinclair station there. He held down the Brand Manager then the Creative Director slot at Tegna’s KVUE before joining KXAN. Sounds like the creativity will keep bubbling in the Texas state capital. Well Dunne! Dax.

Don’t kid yourself…getting a promotion is a big deal.  It’s cause for fireworks, celebratory toasts and, at the very least, a cake. I hope ALL of these were part of JAROD KERFOOT’s way to mark his promotion to Promotion Manager at Tribune’s FOX/CBS affils in Indianapolis, WXIN/WTTV. Jarod has been at the station working as a producer with CSD BOB ST CHARLES for a few years, so he’s been working with the best. He’s been a freelance videographer for ESPN, WWE and NFL Films (to name a few) and has put time in as a promo pro for Indy’s WISH. I wonder if he had cake (and what kind if he did…) Well Dunne! Jarod.

Fashion is a fabulous and logical step when one decides entertainment marketing has run its course. Taking that pretty step is DANIELLA CRACKNELL, who at one time was Director, Brand Partnerships, Press and Talent Relations for the now-sold Scripps Networks, Fine Living Network TV. The lady knows marketing, so that’s going to be a plus for her new venture – inventor and CEO of The Spa Dress, for women who travel. Check it out yourself at www.TheSpaDress.com

A new month – the perfect time to consider something afresh. How about the concept of paying it forward. The marvelously talented GM MARYANN BALBO of WHDF in Huntsville recently did a LinkedIn post asking who in your past gave you a break, citing that none of us are born into the jobs we do to bring home the bacon (so to speak). Apologies to any royalty reading this. Once in LA, a producer was challenged on this point, not wanting to give a writer a project. The writer snapped “Tell me how to spell your name again…Oprah might want you on the show, seeing as you’re the only producer ever born to the role.” The concept of seeing something in someone, sensing that they have abilities and talents they aren’t currently using is one of the marks of a leader. MIKE STEWART, CSD of KFMB in San Diego just sent his, as if on cue: “I love giving opportunities to people who have that “something” inside of them that transcends a résumé. Trust me, I’ve been there… time to pay it forward!” Since there are no mistakes – it’s pretty obvious that paying it forward is the theme of August. Mike has hired CASEY NAKAMURA. If you read this on Tuesday, it’s his first as producer at the CBS affil. More from Mike: “He’s a really bright, multi-talented producer who was recently freelancing for corporate videos. He had produced for KUSI a few years ago and he does a lot of work editing videos for competitive video game tournaments.” I sense that it’s all good from here on our for Casey, and Mike, and KFMB…Well Dunne! Casey.

Are you paying it forward?

She has been Promotion Manager at Meredith’s KCTV in KC….Another OTA trade is BRAD RILEY, who is now a Phoenix pro as Director of Marketing for the Arizona Partnership for Economic Innovation. He has been CSD at Hearst’s KCCI in Des Moines and before that Director of Promotion and Creative Services at Omaha’s WOWT. And lovey SAMANTHA KNOWLTON is now with Pc Promotions in Tulsa. She’s the former CSD at KJRH there and she’s the best. Well Dunne! all of you.

Think About This: “How would you live if you felt you could trust life fully? If you believed you were totally protected and secure, that forevermore your life would be filled with love and prosperity? Think of how your fears would dissolve, of how totally accepting of yourself and others you would be—it wouldn’t matter if they met your expectations or not. Think of how you would venture forth knowing you would succeed. Think of how your heart would open, of how free you would feel. How free you would be to love. Hearst does a wonderful job of promoting people from within. When one sits and actually thinks about entertainment marketing (mainly station-side) the career path is not very promising…so companies that look to see who is ready to move to another challenge are to be commended. So commendations to Hearst in promoting NATHAN WHITE to Creative Services Director of their Des Moines CBS affil, KCCI. Nathan was Assistant CSD at their Louisville property, WLKY. He actually had two other jobs there as well…writer producer and before that news videographer. So he’s a highly promotable guy. He also shot news at WBKY in Bowling Green. Obviously, he has a great eye. Well Dunne! Nathan.

Tyler, Texas is a gorgeous town. East of Dallas and not that far from the casinos of Shreveport, it’s known for it’s roses. Their annual Rose Woo-Haw (not official title) is coming up in October and it’s fun, beautiful and smells wonderful. Tyler’s Nexstar-owned KETK has a new Creative Services Manager who will be all settled in before the festivities get under way. MICHAEL LOWE is the man and his new role finds him back at a familiar place – his old station. He’s edited news for the NBC affiliate as well as been a Senior Photojournalist there. After a stint writing and producing commercials for ComCorp, he’s back with those sharpened skills ready to have at it. Lovely. Well Dunne! Michael.

This time of year, Boston is bustling with excitement, lobster rolls, and tourists. It’s an amazing city that is one-of-a-kind. Hard to leave it, and that’s one of the bonus extras in KAREN LEVY’s new job…she doesn’t have to decamp Beantown. Karen has been at work as the new Creative Services Director at Cox’s FOX affil, WFXT. The Emory grad worked her way up the ranks at Sunbeans WHDH in Boston, starting as a Segment Producer before jumping to the creative side of things. She was Promo Manager there as well as CSD. In betwee station gigs she filled her professional time with exciting stints at BackNine Network (where she joined the VP club in Marketing and Promotions)  and did the same at World Series of Fighting. So glad to hear the good folks of Boston are keeping such a good lady. Enjoy your next lobster roll while thinking of us! Well Dunne! Karen.

Sometimes, a good producer arrives on your doorstep thanks to their spouses new job.  Yes, follow the thread here. When NIKKI OOSTRA’s husband got transferred to Greenville, NC, it was the perfect timing for Marketing Director (and major favorite) MARC MORRISTON, who was on the hunt for a talented marketing producer. As you no doubt have surmised, NIKKI is now on board at the Nexstar owned WNCT, CBS. She has a background as a Director of newscasts, which means she really is cool under pressure. She’d recently worked at WPDE in Myrtle Beach, at WSPA in Spartanburg, and at WACH in Columbia. All South Carolina. Love to see creative solutions to promo producer problems. Now it’s time for PROMO BOOT CAMP!! (blatant self promotion). Nikki, Marc’s team is a great place to be. Well Dunne!

Clean crisp air with temps from the low 70’s to mid 80’s. Summertime in Colorado is pretty sweet. Its even sweeter when you have a new job. DREW SIDENER is having a sweet summer, sitting in his new office at CBS’s KCNC where the title on the door says Creative Services Director. He was across the proverbial street in the Mile High City at KUSA as Promo Manager for nearly 14 years before jumping to KCNC. He’s a University of Kansas Jayhawk who also did writing and promotion for KDVR. Before unpacking to stay in Denver, Drew began TV life as a News Photog at KTKA in Topeka, WINK in Fort Myers and WFRV in Green Bay. DC was a stop –  at Fox News Service where he was a field producer and editor. And he spent several years as a Photog for KPHO in Phoenix. Drew is obviously happy and no doubt KCNC is as well. He’s a man who nows news – even doing Night Assignment Editing for WBAY. Today, we have a win-win. Well Dunne! Drew.

July 12 marks Net Neutrality Day. Take a gander at the list of companies who are participating – these are companies and people who are against the FCC selling out the internet to the highest bidders.   It’s our business that will be impacted greatly. Our creativity slowed down or blocked. If you’re for allowing the FCC to change, please contact me and let me hear why. If not, I hope all your news shows and promos will call attention to this before it becomes the problem it will.  Meanwhile, read what Variety has to say.

We all know a picture is worth a thousand words…and the whole ‘art’ of TV relies heavily on pictures. So when your station photogs win an award for them, it’s time to break out the gold stars and pats on the back. Such is the case at KGTV, the Scripps ABC in San Diego which calls itself 10 News. They were recently tapped as the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) West Station of the Year. STEVE FEDORISKA, Chief Photographer there, calls his very talented crew storytellers, which they definitely are. Love seeing people who are dedicated get recognized for what they so adore. Thanks JILLIAN OPPEGARD and sorry for the delay. Jillian is Marketing Manager there. Well Dunne! photogs.

We all hear about ‘keep at it’ and ‘persistence’ and ‘never give up’…almost ad naseum. But the truth is…the fact is…it works. And the best example of this tenacity is CURTIS MILES. For a very long time, the General Manager slot has been what his heart desired. Yes, he loves the world of TV promo/marketing/creative, but the ability to be the GM, to truly steer the station…that’s been what the Iowa native has focused on. It wasn’t easy. There’s a very wrong concept amongst many hiring entities that creative are far inferior to be a GM than sales people. Good thing the folks at Quincy Media know a thing or two…they’ve announced that Curtis is starting as GM at their ABC affil WAOW in Wausau, Wisconsin. He’ll being the end of July and will be saying good-bye to 13 years with ABC Television. He’s currently Vice President of Creative Services and Local Programming for Chicago’s WLS-TV. Curtis has been CSD at ABC’s WTVD in Raleigh as well as then-Belo’s WVEC in Norfolk. He was Promo Manager at Hearst’s WTAE in Pittsburgh and consulted for Magid. His first job in TV – photog for KGAN in Cedar Rapids. Nobody could be as happy for him as the person writing this. Well Dunne! Curtis.

Tomorrow, news about San Diego’s KGTV.

COSMO LOSCO did fab promo when he worked as Creative Services Manager for FOX in DC and then as Promo Manager in Philly for NBC. Then he went out on his own and founded Innovation Media. Yeah, he’s that good. Now comes word on how good he is. Let’s let him tell the latest:  My company won Best in Philly in the 2017 readers choice awards in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philly.com (announced tonight and special section comes out tomorrow in the paper and online) and I’m opening my first (small) production studio with a special focus on social media production for small business and startups. Well Dunne! Cosmo!

Rain. Rain. Go away. It’s the latest mantra for Well Dunne! Talent’s KELLY PIDGEON, who is dealing with yet another soggy clean up for his studio. What is it with tons of rain and recording studios? But, of course, Kelly never missed a single syllable for any of his clients. Yeah, he’s that wonderful.

Tribune’s ABC in Wilkes-Barre, PA, WNEP, was in the spotlight in HBO’s Last Week Tonight. Love that John Oliver. Seems they have a backyard train, which, if nothing else, received some very interesting feedback from viewers. Will check to see if it resulted in more PR, perhaps some ratings, and for sure it got some laughs.

Wilmington, North Carolina sits on the Atlantic and has the largest film lot east of Hollywood. The list of productions that were produced out of Wilmington is impressive (thank you imdb).  The area is called Cape Fear (movie of the same title shot on location). It’s a lovely town and the Morris Media-owned ABC/CBS affiliate there, WWAY, has a new Director of Creative and Promotions. RICHARD (they call him Rich) WENZ has stepped into the role, and he’s bringing a very impressive (and delicious) background in marketing with him. He’s been with Doner and J. Walter Thompson in LA, Director of Field Marketing for Jack in the Box, VP Marketing for Ameriphone in the OC, and was Global Marketing Director, Retail for Ben & Jerry’s out of Vermont. What a find for WWAY. Well Dunne! Rich.

Hope you’re reading this over your morning cup of (iced) coffee. That way, you can make sure to be at T-H-E session in Vegas. It’s happening at 4 in the afternoon over at Grand Ballroom F at the Mirage. It’s Battle of the Promo Superstars, hosted (moderated, emceed…) by the one and only DAVE BAUMANN. Dave is a man of taste and style who’s Marketing and Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. Stephen, btw, has the best hair in the business. Back to Dave, who’s wrangled five incredible CSD’s who’ll go head-to-head with the same story to see who rocks the ‘best’ promo. Competing are LARRY WATZMAN of WBNS/Columbus Ohio, JAMIE HOLMES of KPTV/Portland O, SCOTT ALTUS of KOMO/Seattle, ROBYN KEENEY of KOVR/Sacramento and KELLEN DARGLE of WKYT in Lexington. Robyn is a grad of our Topical Boot Camp, so the Vegas odds are on her (shameless self promotion) as the spot that ya’ll remember best. Right SYDNEY? Bet they’re all going to inspire. As the old radio drag race spots used to say, Be There!

What’s with the tabloid-type shows? A trend? Did anybody think to have temp tattoos for the tabs as a promo? Washable…

The best, most enduring productions aren’t going to gain you ratings. They’ll gain you diapers, 2am feedings and years of PTA duties. And more love than you ever thought possible. Of course, you also get a new title with these special productions: Mom or Dad. Or even Mimi or PawPaw – very creative options for names today. A special production was just recently completed by KARA MCNEELY, VP of Creative Services and Programming for KABC in LA. She welcomed a second little one into her family, and that is exactly like the fabled ‘happy endings’ of a Disney movie. Well Dunne! Kara and family.

If you’re wandering the casino aisles in Vegas, hoping the slots will be as hot as the temps outside, keep an eye out for SYDNEY RUBIN, TERRY KOWALSKI and KAREN YARBROUGH…they’re Well Dunne! stringers and all round fun people to boot. Cause today, with the world technology what it is, nothing that happens in Vegas is guaranteed to stay in Vegas. Hey-ooo.

So, how many watched the Comey session on Thursday? Yep, that’s just about everybody. Gonna pose a question about news, since many of you are tasked with making news a ratings winner. Did you like what you saw on the bottom third of the screen? Because the coverage I watched (and it was many different feeds) had more than their fair share of cluttered, hard to read, busy, distracting, glaring, unhelpful, non-artistic lower thirds that made me want to turn away. Think about that…turning away a viewer.

So I pose the question to those who might be charged with making ‘the look’, might be involved in carrying out ‘the look’, might want ‘the look’ to reflect your brand/market position/reputation…how did it get to this? When did it become ‘the thing’ to leave up an identifier for about 4 seconds then dump out to return to the glaringly obvious headline? When did a locator for where the news happened get dropped for, again, the headline? With the Comey coverage, the TV bottom third graphics hid the signs that were in front of each participant. Sometimes those Senators look alike and it would have been nice to know who was talking. Remember, the new normal of watching TV is with more than one screen at a time, so how does this ‘look’ support that?

After 9/11, there were passionate discussions at stations where the case for the continued news ticker was made. It was dropped but now different advancers crawl across the bottom in hopes of enticing a viewer to stay. We know that the news ticker is meant to catch the recent tune-in viewer to cable news and catch them up on what’s happening. Got it. But the addition of logo, stock averages, headlines and the nearly ever present Breaking News (in bright red – at least it doesn’t flash) defies a solid marketing raison d’etre. Enlightened responses encouraged.

On Monday, we’ll hear from guys who punch the casts…one is Well Dunne! (and he’s amazing).

Carry on.
