With the retirement of long-time CSD MASHA JARRETT, the Hearst folks have named KELLY HOFFMAN to the role. She’s been with them for about 15 years, mainly doing promo writing and producing. He started the new year sans alarm clock and marching to only his own drummer. Kip has done a lot at the station, including being instrumental in building the operation from the ground up, clocking in for the first time in 1982. He was named Promotion Manager shortly after that. The station was known as WFSL in those days. Kip has his diploma from Michigan State in East Lansing. The South isn’t used to snow. Or the kind of cold temps that are visiting at the moment. So let’s talk about warm and fun…how about talking about…Hawaii. Or more so, saying Aloha to Hawaii. What? Leave Hawaii? Yes, one does come and go from the islands (ask someone about island fever) and yet one’s heart stays on the white sandy beaches. The heart has moved west…it couldn’t afford to be in San Francisco. Back on track, let’s hear it for post-TV creative KAREN FUJII who is heading to Seattle. Actually, she’s there now. Just arrived on the mainland. There in the home of Starbucks and Nordstrom, she’ll be be Director of Marketing and Communications for Seattle University. She’s been studying at University of Hawaii at Manoa and is thrilled to be, as she puts it, closer to her friends in Europe yet sad she’ll be further from the friends in New Zealand and Australia. The lady is SO global! She’s worked in Denmark and at WJKS (as it was known then) in Jacksonville. As soon as she settles into Seattle (which is in search of a new nickname….) and unpacks tons of boxes, she’ll be out and about. Buy her a latte or a Northwest fish and make her feel at home. Everybody has coping methods for life. Some people swim…or play tennis…or paint. Some cook or clean or meditate. Or all or some of these activities. It’s always amazing to watch someone grab life and reshape it like a statue of clay that needs attention. When CHRISSY FUNK reached one of those “important life moments” she got out her hiking boots and took to the Appalachian Trail. If you don’t know about hiking the trail, then look it up and be amazed. Chrissy found herself on the trail…not that she ever lost who she was. But like all artwork, she became more complex, more deep, more interesting. The lady who has a solid core of “I can do this” now knows she can do ANYTHING. And what she’s going to do is head back to Palm Beach (ah, just in time for The Season, my dear) where she’ll be heading up Creative for WPEC, the Sinclair CBS affil. Ms. Chrissy is no stranger to PB – she was head of creative for Scripps there. And before that, she was working with one of the very best (and favorite) SHERRY CARPENTER at WJXT in Jacksonville. Other stations where she learned and did award-winning creative include KDVR in Denver, WTAE in Pittsburgh and WTEN in Albany. She’s just amazing…you should know her. She inspires. LA and Santa Barbara areas…they just can’t catch a break. First massive fires now deadly mudslides. The 101 is closed as of this writing and who knows what else is going to happen as heavy rain hits bald mountains. There are no words for the jobs of the first responders who have been there in every way. You need to let them know how outstanding their efforts are. Now for some good news out of LA…it deals with a major cabler and a great guy. JOSEPH C JOHNSON has a new gig – Executive Director Creative Services at Starz. Mr. J started his TV marketing on a station level in Seattle at KCPQ, and from there went to the Hallmark Channel in LA as Sr. Creative Director. FX Networks was the next beneficiary of his talents then it was freelancing for NBC and ABC before snagging a great upward slot at Warner Bros. He had most recently been their VP Creative Services On-Air for the Warner Bros Entertainment Group. Very exciting new challenge Joe. They’ll have starz in their eyes! Well Dunne!

When you talk with JIM SHOWERS, you can hear his intelligence and his enthusiasm. He’s got it, and that it isn’t the flu that’s making everybody miserable. Yesterday (if you’re reading this on Tuesday) was his first day as Creative Services Manager at NBC affil WILX in East Lansing. (BTW, there is a plain ol’ Lansing, and it’s Michigan’s capital, and it’s just west of East Lansing, but we digress…) Jim comes to Michigan from the mountains of east Tennessee where he headed up marketing for WJHL in Johnson City. Gorgeous part of the world. He’s a northwest guy with a degree from the University of Idaho and a Masters from Washington State University. He’s been a creative guy at TV stations in Idaho, Joplin, Mo, Wyoming, and Spartanburg, SC. Along the way he handled athletic media relations for the University of Wyoming (points for knowing the mascots are Pistol Pete and Cowboy Joe). Great guy is gonna heat up the new slot…which is a terrific idea this time of year. Well Dunne! Jim.

STEVEN BEVELS was busy doing POP’s on Friday…there was snow, ice and that whole winter bomb thing along the coast and his News people had done an amazing job covering it. The where in question is Wilmington, NC. He’s a North Carolina man who was born in the Tar Heel state over in Asheville but has spent his career mainly on the coast. Talk about lucky…best of both worlds. He’s been working doing training (he being the trainer) for Raycom and now he’s Marketing Director of WECT and WSFX, NBC and Fox respectively in the Cape Fear locale. Steven has a degree from UNC-Wilmington and has done commercial production for them. He sounds very happy and that’s such a plus in today’s world. Stay warm and enjoy it all. Taking over the main creative seat at Raycom’s WAVE TV is KRIS BAETE. His official new title, and one that Raycom appears to prefer to the old title of CSD…Kris’ biz card now says Director of Marketing and Audience Development. Sounds good. Kris has been at the NBC affil first as the On-Air Promotion Manager then as Digital Markting Manager. The Western Kentucky U grad has a real eye for film which no doubt makes the viewers of Louisville happy in the long run. Good folks getting ahead…deserves a big ol’ 2018 style Well Dunne!

What is it about creative people? Is it the sense of humor that permeates their thoughts? Their view of life that always delights or disturbs? The witty repartee? What possibly makes creative people even more special than all the above is the ability to see a bigger picture and reinvent themselves. And with the broadcast sector still vainly searching for an economic model that rewards creative not bean counters, reinventing is a grand skill. ROB THOMAS is doing that. The call of his home state, Arkansas, lured him to return. And like a confident creative, he set out to find a way to keep his banker happy. And he has. Rob is happy and, as a super great family man, enjoying being in Fayetteville where he’s now working in sales for Tribune’s KFSM. Fayetteville, btw, has made the list of the five best places to live in the US. Let’s face it, promo and marketing people (more about titles and how they’ve become muddy and useless tomorrow) can sell the dickens out of anything, especially TV. Rob’s done promo for stations in Little Rock and Louisville. Let’s give him the first 2018 Well Dunne!
There are a lot of Rob Thomases (is that how you grammatically make Thomas plural?) in TV. Two were doing promo in Louisville at one time. Oy! Just sayin’.

John, who is heading up the Denali Media properties marketing and such, even had a close encounter with a 9 foot moose in his driveway. The moose was chill, in more ways than one, and took a nap nearby. For those Christmas-holics amongst us, Anchorage should be on your list. Christmas Eve weather forecast is for snow. Take, for instance, CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN of 2C Media. There isn’t anybody who puts their heart into helping like these two and their whole company. They have made the children of Puerto Rico happy after a horrible hurricane. Chris and Carla et all have tirelessly raised funds, wrangled airlines and even delivered presents themselves – all to make a difference. It’s what getting up in the morning is all about. To say Well Dunne! is just not enough.

Ms. Erin has a very interesting resume that includes writing and producing promos for Nat Geo as well as for BBC America, both in the DC market. She knows her capital city. Most recently, Erin has been involved in the education side of the coin as VP of Marketing and Communications for Envision Experience. So many creative people are lost to us when their heart chooses to stop beating. That’s what happened to ROXANN NELSON. Roxann passed away on Tuesday night. She was a promo pro who was living in the Minneapolis area, running her own insurance shop after a notable career doing TV marketing. For the last six years, she headed up Roxann Nelson Medicare and Family Health Insurance. Her TV leadership was evident in her stints as CSD for WSOC in Charlotte, Hearst in Kansas City and Creative Head for ShopNBC. Her TV marketing career began at KARE in her belove Minneapolis. She helped launch talented people and, from all accounts, her laughter and her stories were legendary. She was what Hollywood used to call A Swell Dame. In the vein of Molly Ivins. High praise indeed. Let PETE BARRETT, the busiest man in the TV biz, finish this out: Roxann Nelson, your star shines bright in our memories as a marketer, a very funny person, and as a friend. She wrote on my page regularly, and was a sympathetic ear when I was looking for work. RIP, Rox.

Time to have a little chat about BAD ANNOUNCING. OMG people, it seems to be everywhere. You hear bad announcing on networks, on stations, on national spots. It’s alarming to think that either producers have become tone deaf or they don’t understand the role of a voice in any creative project. For those whose eyes override their ears, here are a few quick tips to make sure your voice choice isn’t, to be blunt, horrible. First, not everybody can handle copy. Just like your anchor people can, by and large, handle reading prompter ideas, it’s even more true that your voice do more than just spit out words. If on hearing your spot you do not feel the emotion of the copy, then you’re hearing announcing, not interpreting. Did you spend all that time and creative capital –did you scramble to get everybody’s thumbs up for your idea – did you have to rewrite and rethink to get a spot you believe in…do you want all that to be ruined by a puker? In the entertainment world, particularly in radio, there are reads that are known as puking. Think Ted Baxter. Think bad used car salesmen. Think the guy at Happy Hour who is overly thrilled with himself. Puking was around in the 50’s on radio…small town, big sound, oh yea baby. Yuck. When assaulted by a puker, the ear recoils. No, that type of read and sound does NOT break through the clutter. It does the opposite. So beware the pukers, and sadly, they are out there and being pushed by people who don’t know anything other than how to grind money out of your organization. Avoid. Know that pukers will hurt you in the long run. Now that you’re paying attention to your voice, ask yourself if they really represent what your product is. Are you the quick and new station using a low registered ‘voice of god’ sounds-like-dad voice? Uh, no. Mismatch. Are you the #1 classic and solid choice using a light young voice? Definitely no. You get the idea. Now ask if you sound like everybody else in the market. If you need a little assist – get a market analysis from me. It’s free for the holidays. Guarantee the analysis will open your eyes to the fact MANY stations don’t stand out whatsoever. Your job is to create an image that appeals to all senses, Don’t leave out your ears. And btw, here’s an example of a puker. Now make sure you are Well Dunne!

The lure of the desert is strong, It might be what tempted CHRIS PELCZYNSKI to return to it. Chris is an Arizona State grad (an we know ASU is in Tempe) who is the new CSD at Scripps’ KTNV in Las Vegas (we all know Vegas used to be a wide spot in the desert until Bugsy Siegel had his way with it). Not only is Chris transitioning from stints in Los Angeles and Bristol, CT but also making the switch from focusing on marketing TV sports to TV news on a local level. Lots of growth happening in this. Chris was Art Director in Bristol and Creative Director in LA for the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Let’s hear it – a big cheer – for Chris. Well Dunne!
