There’s a lot of movement happening… people moving from the mountains to the coast and vice versa. Three major shifts…does that make a trend? It is a pattern – perhaps it might develop into something interesting.  Shift No. 1 is DENNISON HOWARD, a native of Colorado Springs, Born and raised in The Springs, one of the most beautiful places in the country, Dennison is a born storyteller. Started telling stories via his roll as a news cameraman. First at KRDO and then KOAA. He was exceptional behind the lens…was assigned to all the important projects. It wasn’t until his then-CSD SYDNEY RUBIN saw something special and brought him into her department. He loved it…flourished (she’s quite the instructor and mentor) and now he’s on his way to Seattle where he’ll be a writer producer for her team at KCPQ, Tribune’s Fox affiliate. I see a lot more seafood in his future and even more exciting work coming out of the station. He begins March 19. Well Dunne! Dennison.

Talk about timing. It’s as important as Location, and in this case it’s a matter of Timing meeting Location resulting in – Mardi Gras! New Orleans, baby! Where the good times roll, the masks are on, the krewes are flinging beads and wearing crowns…and everybody is living it up as only they can. It’s the ideal time to get a job at Tegna’s NBC affil WWL TV, and that’s exactly what NICK CHABARRIA has done. He’s the new Marketing/Promotions Producer for Marketing Director JOSHUA MEZA and the creative department –  and it’s all happened just in time for Shrove Tuesday. Nick calls Oak Lawn, Illinois home, which means he’s a Chicago guy. He went to Mizzou’s revered Journalism school and got a degree. He, of course, did work at KOMU in Columbia while in school as well as studied in Argentina and helped refugees. Great guy alert.  For the last two years, he’s been in front of the camera as a multimedia journalist for KFVS, the Raycom CBS in Cape Girardeau in the southeast corner of the Show Me state. He’s going to be a big asset to the department with insights because he’s ‘been there’. Well Dunne! Nick.

Pittsburgh is quite amazing…besides being home to several Well Dunne! Talent voices (and all round fun professionals!) it’s where radio first signed on the air, where The Avengers was filmed, and it home to the Robot Hall of Fame. No, really it is. With that in mind, it’s no wonder COLIN WILES is happy to be returning to his hometown. Colin is going to be the new News Brand Producer for TRACY OLIVER at Hearst’s WTAE. Colin is a grad of Slippery Rock State University, which has to be one of the most original names for, well, for anything let alone an institution of higher learning. This isn’t Colin’s first gig…but it will see him changing departments, leaving behind the news and being part of the marketing team. Excellent – he’ll be learning from Tracy who is a whiz! He’s been putting the news together down in Fort Smith, Arkansas for Tribune-owned KSFM, the CBS affil. Well Dunne! Colin.

What a long, slog of a week. But, from every face plant to the canvas, we rise…and better, bigger adventures greet us. Mold our growth. So, with that in mind, let’s focus at some fun things from promo types here and there, like WAHEED ALQAWASMI, late of TV promo at FOX in Memphis (Cox’s WHBQ) . He‘s in Oxford, Mississippi this weekend with his film, Lives Restarted for the Oxford Film Fest. It’s a documentary about Holocaust survivors…how they survived the camps, made their way here to the US, to Memphis specifically. How they restarted their lives…rose up. Can’t wait to see it – it’s more important now than ever. If you’re anywhere near Mississippi, go.  Well Dunne! Waheed.

The List’s Social Media guru LAUREL PORTIE doesn’t just go home and collapse in a heap on the sofa. No no no. She and her partner have She Bikes, a line of shirts for ladies who love to cycle…it’s great. And, since I’m not in government, I can tell you to buy one or two. Hit up Laurel or me for details.

Next time, we’ll introduce the new News Brand Manager at WTAE in Pittsburgh. Yehaw! Til then stay warm or head south. Well Dunne! everyone for surviving the week.

From the Life After TV section of our world (which is getting larger as the days go by…and is now a preferred destination by many who shall remain nameless but are very talented..) comes news about former promo pro MARC ROBERTZ SCHWARTZ. He left TV after heading up creative and doing promo for stations like NBC in Miami, WMAR and WBAL in Baltimore, and what was called WJKS in Jacksonville…went out on his own and of course used his talents in video and marketing. He founded a TV operation in The Villages, just north of Orlando. Yes, he’s a Florida Gator and who doesn’t miss winters in the sunshine state? Cut to the chase…his Hometown Health TV (Red Apples Media) has been honored by his alma mater as one of the 100 most successful Gator-run/founded businesses. Very cool. A big deal and well deserved. A big Well Dunne! Marc.

Down in lovely Palm Beach, where The Season is in full swing, comes word of a lady who’s retiring from the TV world, which is great news for her but not so much for the clients, station and viewers of WPTV. CHARLENE MAVILLE is closing the door of her office on Friday. She’s been a producer and marketing coordinator, and she’s amazing. Happy clients. Smooth operations. Ideal. A multi-tasker extraordinaire, Charlene’s been with WPTV for 18 years. You have all day today to hit her up and tell her that she’ll be missed, and she should savor every day doing what she wants, client free! Big smile. Well Dunne! Charlene

TONY PIERCE isn’t in Kansas anymore. He went to college there…at Washburn where he studied Marketing. He worked in Kansas as Production Manager – twice – first at Topeka’s WIBW then at KTMJ. He was Promotion Manager at Scripps’ KSHB in Kansas City. But now he’s moved to Florida heading up his first Creative Services Director job at Scripps’ WFTX, FOX in Ft. Myers. Trading sunflowers for palm trees. Most gorgeous market for a very busy guy. Well Dunne! Tony.

More good news, which the people affected by the recent tornadoes in the southeast are going to love. You know about WDAM’s Pine Belt Strong telethon, which also had a big hand from Jackson, Mississippi’s WLBT, Biloxi’s WLOX and Memphis’ WMC. Another Raycom station, WALB in Albany, GA held a one day phone bank that raised more than $202,000. Called Rise Up for Recovery – Give for South Georgia Tornado Relief.  The telethon is ongoing…which means you can go online and continue to donate. CSD JIM BERNHARDT of WALB says it all goes to the Red Cross to help get people back on their feet. Bravo and Well Dunne! to all the hard work that helped raise $585,000 so far!

This Monday is not going to be any ol’ Monday. Not the ‘gotta get to work why can’t weekends be longer’ Monday. No…it’s going to be happy. And what is happier than love? This Monday dawns finding the lovely ZOHRA ALNOOR (of WJLA promo fame) a married lady.  She eloped! And…wait for it…because it is February sweeps, she went back to work! OMG, does CSD STAN MELTON not have the most wonderful lady working for him!?! Notice to WJLA…think bonus. We are all sending the newlyweds our best!

Former CBS Boston promo pro JESSICA HENRICHS has added a new title to her resume: Mom. She and her handsome hubby welcomed a beautiful little girl to the world. Yes, all smiles and cuddles and happiness emanating from Chicago, where Jess is a VP at Digitas.

There is nothing more American than working one’s way up the job ladder…starting and learning and having your efforts noticed and rewarded. TAMARA ROST started at WTVG, ABC in Toledo in the biz office as an Accounting Clerk. She was Office Manager then Program Manager then Director of Programming then Director of Programming and Promotion then Director of Operations then Regional Director of Operations wherein she handled the station in Toledo and Flint, Michigan. Whew…that’s a lot of great work there. Now, Tamara has slipped across the street and has taken the Marketing Director slot at Raycom’s CBS affil, WTOL. This lady knows her stuff and knows how a station works! So good to hear. Big Well Dunne! Tamara.

Speaking of Toledo…earlier in the week, the post about RYAN SPEER who is heading up Tamara’s old slot at WTVG…the Bowling Green University in question is in Ohio, not Kentucky. Oops. Geography certificate being recalled….but still sending out a big smile to Ryan.

Update…WDAM’s final tally for their Pine Belt Strong telethon was $320,000. People have good hearts. Well Dunne! ERIC SNELL and all the WDAMers. ,

Denver and San Diego seem like very different places with little in common. Where Denver, the Mile High city, boasts winter sports and incredible mountains, San Diego is Oceanside with the best climate in the country. Yet both are vibrant, young-people towns swimming in high tech and entrepreneurs. They’re also two markets that JILLIAN OPPEGARD has on her resume, what with her new job and all.  The end of February, Jillian is going to KGTV, the Scripps ABC operation in SD to be the Marketing Manager. She’s been in Denver at CBS’s KCNC as Senior Creative Services Producer and considers Centennial, Colorado home, even though she was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She is gonna love working with KGTV’s PHIL KRAFT – they both report to LEILA STILLWELL. Thanks to Marshall Advertising’s LAUREN RIDGLEY for the scoop. Big Well Dunne! Jillian.

Well Dunne! to the entire WDAM TV family who did Pine Belt Strong, a full day telethon to raise money for the victims of the devastating tornadoes that hit the Hattisburg, Laurel Mississippi area.  Marketing Director ERIK SNELL announced they raised $200,000 as of 8 pm (when this was written) but there’s still three hours to go. Well Dunne! generous and caring Mississippi citizens.

It’s Groundhog Day as you know, so, if you haven’t decided to make it a great day, then at least muddle through and watch Bill Murray so you can lighten up.

Think About This: “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” ― John Lennon

Austin, Texas isn’t just home to UT and capital of the Lone Star State. It’s an amazing, vibrant city that loves music, bar-b-q, TexMex, SXSW…and Willie Nelson lives there. It’s where MARK WILLENBORG has been CSD (named changed to Director of Marketing) for KVUE for over 12 years, doing a magnificent job and being the greatest guy around. A gentleman – which is worth more than gold. Got word today from his GM, former promo pro KRISTIE GONZALES, that Mark is hanging up his TV hat so he can join The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos, which is just down the road from Austin. (yes, the outlet mall there is THAT good…) Mark will be marketing their archives of writers, photographers and musicians from Texas and Mexico including the afore-mentioned Willie, plus luminaries like Cormac McCarthy and Sandra Cisneros. THAT sounds muy exciting. Mark worked for two other operations under the Belo banner, KHOU in Houston and Texas Cable News in Dallas. He’s got a degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Nobody deserves a new exciting path, but TV will be the less for it. Well Dunne! Mark. BTW, he’ll be at KVUE until February 4…give him a Well Dunne! yourself.

KEVIN KOLBE, who heads up the creative at FOX50 in Raleigh, is embarking on what seems like an ideal promo, only he’s not really doing it as a promo.  Kevin’s a big fan of Keifer Sutherland and 24, and when it was on (before Kiefer became The Lone Survivor), Mr. Kolbe teamed with uber-popular Raleigh market MIX radio man BILL JORDAN to do Two Guys Talking 24 vlog.  Now that 24:Legacy is coming, in an exciting new form but some some of the same characters, they’re turning on the cameras again and are going to repeat the fun. What a great promo…FOX folks you listening? They’ll be posting their vlog on Tuesdays….I’ll be there. Well Dunne! Kevin and Bill.

This Tuesday, we focus our sights on Toledo, Ohio. Home to M*ASH’s Max Klinger played by Jamie Farr, who himself was from Toledo! Casting lady take a bow. Toledo is where Katie Holmes and Gloria Steinham called home. Where National Lampoon founder PJ O’Rourke and the voice of cartoon characters like Deputy Dawg Dawes Butler came from. There’s been two switches in Toledo, but we’ll focus on one today and one tomorrow. Step in to the spotlight RYAN SPEER, who has been promoted to the lead creative, aka Promotions Director of WTVG, Gray’s ABC affil. Ryan’s been a writer/producer for them and this is the perfect step. He’ll be a home run hitter for sure. The Bowling Green, KY man (he graduated from Bowling Green U majoring in telecommunications) has also been Chief Video Editor at Goodwyn Production Group. A big Well Dunne! Ryan!

Chicago is a great city. A solid, vibrant town that loves food, family and doing a great job. And it’s quite the sports town, what with the Cubs winning the World Series just to name one sports achievement. It’s a good thing for NIKKI WASSERMAN, who’s heading to Chi-town to work with JAY WADHWA’s creative team at Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Yes, she’s a huge sports fan and a fab creative. CSD HENRY VASQUEZ is going to miss her as are all the folks at KLAS in Vegas. She’s a Ft Myers, Florida lady who went to college in Pennsylvania. She interned at WPVI in Philly and worked at WFTX in the Naples market. She’s a real go-getter. She’ll be staying in Vegas til the end of the February book, so there’s lots of time to hit her up with a Well Dunne! Nikki.

Job Alert – Promo Producer KCPQ/KZJO Seattle (working with the #1 best promo person around and that’s not up for discussion..SYDNEY RUBIN!)

If you’re sleepless in Seattle, it’s because there are too many amazing things to see and do in this Pacific Northwest gem. Now’s your chance to join our Seattle based creative team at KCPQ/Q13 and KZJO/Joe TV. We’re looking for a promo producer who can bring their talent to driving late news viewership in primetime and across our social platforms. Topicals? Yes, but we’re not like other news stations. We have our own attitude and brand focus and our topicals have to reflect that unique viewpoint. If you can do it all – write, produce, shoot, edit – we want to talk to you. If you want to push new concepts to move audiences in social media, we want to talk to you. If you want to live in a city that offers oceans, lakes, mountains, and one of the most vibrant cultural scenes in the country, (and no state income tax!), you’ll want to talk to US!

Show us why our team should be your team. Send your resume and reel (links preferred) to srubin@kcpq.com and apply online at tribunemedia.com/careers.

So far, 2017 has proven to be a fast-moving, bizarre, surreal few weeks. A well respected friend pointed out from his VP office, ‘all my childhood is fading away, one at a time.’ Yesterday MARY TYLER MOORE turned off the lights in the WJM-TV newsroom for the very, very last time. Her character Mary Richards painted a picture of TV news that attracted more than a few of us to get into the business.  But it wasn’t the job itself that was the extra spark that made MTM an icon. It was the fact her character was strong, single, brave, anxious, and feminine…and smart. That was not the picture of women in the US at the time. The happy ending for Mary Richards was a job well done, a friend helped, a statement made, all without an apron or a PTA membership. It was cutting edge in its day and it was done with top drawer humor. Well Dunne! Mary Richards.

If you don’t think a musical jingle has power anymore (btw – Who said that? Somebody floated that rumor..who said that?) just remember that everybody used the song’s words when Mary died. Who could turn the world on with a smile…

CBS is running a Mary salute Thursday night. PBS is and on Saturday, Sundance TV is running a Mary Marathon. .

In the real world…down in San Antonio, dear DON SMITH’s father, Don Sr., passed away today. Don was a Junior with a brand new son just a week old. The wheel of life keeps turning. Our love to Don and his family. Don is CSD at KENS.

You’ve all heard of the brass ring…well, this is about the gold ring. Grabbing it is CSD ALEX SHAW who heads up the marketing arm of WPEC, Sinclair’s Palm Beach CBS affil. In just shy of a week, his new Promotion Manager is going to check in, and that is the gold ring in discussion. The good folks at the station will be welcoming BARRY FITZSIMMONS to the fold, and they couldn’t have found someone who’ll bring more talent and zip than Barry. Plus they’ve gotten themselves a man with a wonderful sense of humor. Let’s fact it…a sense of humor is as important as oxygen in today’s world. Many of you know Barry by his author and podcast name, the Promo Cowboy. It’s a novel as well as a Must Hear..his iTunes podcast Promo Cowboys. Do it. The Boston U grad has worked promo magic at NBC, MSNBC, ONE World Sports and ESPN as well as ABC, MLB, etc. NYC has a lot of great work done by Barry (and folks who are Promo Cowboys). He’ll be a real asset to Alex and will be working with fun talented LARRY DOYLE, who knows a thing or two about what makes poppin’ TV. See you all soon…it is The Seaon you know. Well Dunne! Barry.

LAUREN RIDGLEY does not let grass grow under her feet. She’s no longer full-time station side where she headed marketing like she did at WISN in Milwaukee, but her marketing talents are not sitting in idle. As if being mom to a most adorable little girl under the age of 1 isn’t enough, she’s now working with Marshall Advertising, the folks who handle media buying for many stations. So when Lauren reaches out to you, reach back! Lady is fabulous. Lauren will stay in the Northwest, but isn’t it lovely we can all work from where we are most of the time now. Yes it is. Well Dunne, Lauren!

Horribly destructive weekend in the south. Tornadoes in many places. ERIK SNELL and his family had a very close call with a damaging twister. All is well with the Snells but not so with their neighbors. He’s the CSD at Raycom’s WDAM in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Tomorrow, great news from WPEC in West Palm.

Ever have a time in your life when someone puts pressure on you to do something you don’t really want to do? They do it because they see in you something that you might now see at all. Happened to ROB ANDERSON and he switched from doing commercial production to doing TV promo – and he couldn’t be happier. It’s working out well for him and he is the new Creative Services Manager of WPTA/WISE, Quincy Media’s ABC/CW in Fort Wayne, where he started his career as a news photog. He’s a Huntington, Indiana native and went to  Vincennes University before grabbing a camera and doing the ‘news thing’. He switched to doing commercial production after 10 years in news, and he loved commercials. However, when his then-GM asked him if he’d switch to promo, he said no. Didn’t want to do the same ole thing day after day. A week later, the GM pressed the issue, and Rob said ‘sure’…and before you know it, he was a promo pro and a much happier man. Rob was a writer producer (who also was a shooter..duh) at the station but then took I-75 south to Florida where he promo’d for the NBC O&O in Miami. He was lured back home and is looking forward to marketing ‘above his marketing size’ (a phrase just now coined and I hope it sticks…). Lovely to know such enthusiasm and talent is getting a free reign in today’s world. Well Dunne! Rob.

Cancer has robbed the world of another creative. Robbed the world of a friend, a husband, brother in law…of a unique presence. We are all the less for it. WILL HARRIS has passed away, adding another notch to the unrelenting numbers that cancer claims as its own. For the last four years, Will has been Creative Services Director of Cox’s FOX affil in Tulsa, KOKI. Along the way, he’s done marketing, creative and producing for Cox stations in the Northwest, and did amazing work at  KTVU in Oakland in the SF market. He attended Norfolk State U and called Virginia Beach home. So many lives will miss him.

When a CSD promotes a producer with the words “greatly deserved’, it’s a doubly good thing. Good for the person getting the promotion and good for the CSD (and company) for nurturing talent. While they might not be able to read this because of the horrific ice storm forecast for their market, the good folks at Scripps in Kansas City have promoted ROBERT HESS ll to Promo Manager of NBC affil KSHB and independent KMCI.  He’s been a Senior Producer for CD RANDY THURMAN, and obviously did a fantastic job. Bob, as he is known, is a grad of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and has a Masters in Communication fro University of Central Missouri.  He started in promo over at WDAF in KC where he was also a shooter and an MMJ, so he knows the news side of the coin. Great big Well Dunne! Mr. Hess.

If you aren’t a fan of RAY RICHMOND’s writing, then a suspicious eye is cast upon you. Ray is great – knows the biz and has written for Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and he’s funny and on target…yes, this is a fan talking. While you read this, if you’re in the LA area, open your scheduler and go to January 16. Now for 7:30 pm, put free reading at Lounge Theatre on Santa Monica of Transition, Ray’s play about the meeting between Obama and Trump. It’s going to run for 5 weeks starting in March, but this reading is free and I bet hilarious. Do it. Be the first. NBCU’s JORDANA HOUCHINS is gonna be there.

Never having to worry about a bad hair day again…yeah, that’s a life perk for sure. It’s just part of the new job for JEFF SCHROCK, Creative Services Director for Nexstar’s WBOY, NBC in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Jeff had until quite recently been a reporter and anchor for WBOY. So yes, he knows news inside and out. He’s stepping behind the camera, which has a few  advantages, like the hair thing, at the same time  it opens new doors for his artistic growth. Jeff’s a local guy who has worked for the CBS affil doing all the things one does in TV– he’s even run a live truck. For sure he really knows TV inside and out. He goes by another name as well: Lt. Colonel Schrock – he’s part of the Civil Air Patrol. Well Dunne! to Jeff!
