Settling into Charlotte is TRAVIS COLLINS, the newly hired creative writer producer at Raycom’s WBTV. Travis moves east from Abe Lincoln’s Springfield, IL. He’ll be working with CSD JOHN RICE and should enjoy the mild Charlotte winters and gorgeous Spring to come. Well Dunne! Travis.

Meanwhile, DALE WYMAN is heading to the California capital, KCRA to head up the Hearst affiliate’s NBC operation. He’s left the NBC affil in Las Vegas – after 22 years. He’s going to love Sacramento and I will bet they are going to love him right back. Well Dunne! Dale. And isn’t that the cutest picture (borrowed from his Facebook page).

Job Alert: CHRIS ILLER is looking for a writer producer at the Albuquerque CW/MyTV duop. Don’t call him, but email your resume. Yes, I’ll give you that email if you contact me via Facebook, Twitter or Linked In.

Job Alert: TruTV is looking for a creative type to write and produce on-air promos for the cable net. Actually they are. Got to edit and have at least 3 years of experience. NYC based. Info and applications at www.turnerjobs.com Req#114319

Well Dunne! Talent’s own NICK SANABRIA just finished a fun video piece for the net. Anti drunk driving in theme, Nick’s comedy stylings (love that phrase) are finding attention as viral marketing tools. Remember him if you need that kind of thing.

Friday it is, with thanks to all involved. Let’s start serious – fighting cancer. The “Big C” sucks. And it’s everywhere. Charlotte’s WBTV CSD, JOHN RICE, isn’t just kvetching about it. He’s getting on his bicycle and raising money to fight. It’s called 24 Hours of Booty (a name that gets attention) and you can read all about it by clicking here. Support John and throw some money his way. It’s a GREAT cause. Well Dunne! Mr. Rice.

It’s easy being green if you’re ROB JACOBSON, newly appointed SVP/Marketing for Discovery Communications’ Planet Green Channel. He comes over from Lifetime where his title was , SVP/Executive Creative Director. The Syracuse grad has worked at NYC agencies, too. Well Dunne.

Well golly…Well Dunne! Talent just signed the man who voices McGruff the Crime Dog. Click here and read all about JOEY CAMEN. Then call me and put him to work for you. You KNOW he’d make your next project memorable. The picture is of McGruff. Joey’s picture is on the Well Dunne! Talent site. Go on…click through.

The LATimes has a story about the new CNN campaign, which, for some unknown marketing reason, is using their own spots to sell advertisers on buying their own spots. Somebody explain how that works, please.

Don’t forget to share your news…via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.

Well Dunne! for July 13, 2009

Jul 13, 2009 by     Comments Off on Well Dunne! for July 13, 2009    Posted under: Allison Gollust, John Rice, Stu Powell, WBTV 60, WCNC

Turning 60 is not too shabby. One such birthday with 60 candles on the cake is for CBS affiliate WBTV in Charlotte, NC. The newspaper there has an interesting retrospective about the now Raycom station. CSD JOHN RICE must have his PR hat on. Well Dunne!

Sadly, Charlotte has more news. The passing of former WCNC General Manager STU POWELL. Stu was my boss, and he had what many in the biz now lack- a great sense of humor. He fought but lost a tough battle with cancer. He leaves behind a very loving family and so many happy memories. Stu will always share a bond with me that will never be forgotten – 9/11. It was a call from Stu that made me look up to see the coverage and it was Stu standing next to me when the second plane went into the tower. As a matter of fact, it was Stu who was my first phone call when my brother died. Rest well and in peace.

Getting ready for the invasion of the Extreme Makeover crew is HEATHER HOLMES, the new CSD up at ABC (and FOX) affil KAAL. That’s in the Rochester, Mason City, Austin Minnesota market. Heather comes to the slot from Connecticut, where she was doing that creative thing for Rainbow’s News 12 Connecticut. She’s a sweetie! Well Dunne! My dear.

Calling all art directors! ABC’s WTVD in the Triangle, North Carolina’s Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill needs an artist with experience in After Effects. Don’t contact me…get hold of CURTIS MILES, the CSD. Of course, he’s out on a shoot today, but I’m sure he’d love to have an email or phone message when they yell, “it’s a wrap!”

Which leads us to WBTV’s newest hire, who is moving back to Charlotte. JONATHAN WICKER is going to work for his old boss, JOHN RICE, who is now at CBS affil WBTV. Jonathan will be to be head Art Guy In Charge (not official title, of course) after being a graphic artist in North Carolina’s capital. Both Jonathan and Jon used to work at Belo’s NBC affil WCNC in what was the banking capital – Charlotte – back when Wachovia was one bank and not part of CitiCorp. Well Dunne! Everybody.

Despite the fact my spam filter doesn’t really filter to my liking, it does throw emails I want into the Trash. Sigh. It happened recently when JOHN RICE, major creative at WBTV in Charlotte, sent along an update that he wanted to share. Luckily, he pays attention to detail and resent, so I can now tell you about 24 Hours of Booty. Well, come to think about it, the spam filter may have had reason to flag it. It shouldn’t have, because the booty in question is a 24-hour cycling event for the Lance Armstrong Foundation to benefit cancer research. Set in Charlotte this coming weekend, John is ready. His goal is 200 miles and $1,000. Surely that’s a lot of distance for very little cash. You can support John and donate via the website. Learn more about this by clicking here. As John states on his site, cancer is going to touch you and your family. My brother died of cancer, as did my best friend – within days of each other. So come on everybody, pony up and support this. BTW, since the event has only hit two cities, why not explore doing this in your town with your station? Yeah, I agree. GREAT idea!

Hope one and all are feeling that Spring excitement! Flowers blooming, kittens and puppies arriving, opening windows to get fresh air inside…revitalizes for sure!

STEVE WOMACK is really digging Huntsville, AL, where’s heading up the creative efforts at WAAY TV, the ABC affil in The Watercress Capital of the World. Now, he’s gotten a promotion. Besides handling the promotions, he’s also the Operations Manager. Congrats and Well Dunne! Steve.

And we thank Steve for the following info on a former workmate of his. In his words: AIMEE ROMERO, Senior Writer/Producer is moving from the Queen City to Sin City. She is raising the stakes… moving from WCNC in Charlotte, NC to KLAS in Las Vegas, NV. She rolled the dice for 5 years at KTNV in Las Vegas before becoming a Southern Belle three years ago working for JOHN RICE in Charlotte. Now Aimee shuffles the deck to work for LEE MINARD at the Las Vegas CBS affiliate. She ‘goes all-in’ beginning April 7th! Good luck Aimee… I mean, really… GOOD LUCK!

And surely you’ll be having one grand day in celebration of St. Pat’s. As an Irish lass (I saw that smirk…not funny) I take delight in a day focused on the joy at the heart of Irish souls. Please have a wonderful day and laugh as much as you can.

Today’s a grand day, indeed, for JOHN RICE, who begins as Promotion Manager, handling all the promotions and graphic arts efforts at CBS affil WBTV in Charlotte. John and family (he and his wife are raising four children – several teens) are thrilled there’s no packing and unpacking involved in this new endeavor. He was at Belo’s NBC affil WCNC across town and looks forward to using his market savvy to help solidify a historical base of viewers. John’s had a very exciting background, including being Promo Manager at KHOU in Houston and a lot of credits as Director of Photography, Cinematographer, Producer, Director and Editor. He is a graduate of the University of Texas with a BS in Communications. Well Dunne! John.
