SHANNON POWELL didn’t’ go very far to find her new office…it’s in the same beautiful town of Augusta, GA; she’s just leaving her Marketing director slot at Gray’s CBS affil WRDW to become Marketing Director at Raycom’s FOX affil WFXG. The University of Florida grad hasn’t just done cool jobs at WSB and WXIA in Atlanta. She’s a master chocolatier. That’s right – the lady is an expert at truffles and even went to school to know everything chocolate-y. To say this is a sweet lady is, well, too cliché. But c’est vrais! Well Dunne! Shannon.
Another cool lady has a new job and hasn’t had to travel far to report for duty. LARA RICHARDSON is now the SVP of Marketing – Creative for Discovery Channel. She’s been the VP of Creative for TLC, one of the Discovery channels, where she was at one time a Supervising Producer for TLC/Discovery Home Channel. Other creative stops along the way include Creative Director slot for History Channel and History International, Director of On-Air Promotions for USA Broadcasting, a Senior Writer Producer slot at Oxygen. She began her career in Lubbock, TX at the Fox affiliate as a Promo Coordinator. Impressive Lara. Well Dunne!

The Sacramento-Phoenix connection is pretty strong. Two Phoenix Marketing Directors come direct from Cali’s capital…plus one GM, and now BOBBY RIGG is part of the Sacto Crowd. Mr Bobby is the new Marketing Manager for Scripp’s syndicated show, THE LIST, which launches Sept 17 across the USA. Very exciting. Bobby comes out of Houston’s KHOU where he was Sr. Writer Producer for CSD DALE LOCKETT at the Belo-owned CBS affil. The Sacramento connection lies with his work at Hearst’s KCRA. 9-11, eleven years on. Seems like yesterday and long ago at the same time.
Sunday afternoon, MSNBC broadcast “9/11 as it happened” – the NBC news coverage of that day; the news mainly watched on the bank of sets in the office. In retrospect…in rewatching…it needs restating what an amazing job NBC and everybody did that day, covering an event so insane it still seems surreal.
The man I shared 9-11 with didn’t win his battle with cancer. So for him, and all the souls who have departed on that day and since, today’s Think About This:
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me — not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says,
"There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!

To fill the newly minted title of VP Creative Services at CNN, the fine folks in Atlanta looked north to Toronto and tapped RICH LEWCHUK. Rich is departing his SVP CTV Creative Agency slot. He definitely has the chops to handle the CNN Worldwide branding, what with his background at CTV where he was SVP of Program Planning and Promotion. Before that he was VP of Promotions and Director of Promotions – Saskatchewan at Baton Broadcasting in Toronto, and Promo Producer-Manager at CKCK TV. His first job, or jobs since he did a lot from camera to directing, was at CJOC-TV. Well Dunne! Rich.

Lots going on at Gannett’s NBC affil, WKYC, in Cleveland. It all began with the promotion of one of my all-time favorites MAC MAHAFFEE who was named Digital Marketing Manager, one of those cutting edge jobs that remind me of the “where no man has gone before”. So, that having happened, following took place.
Kent State alum MONIQUE JACKSON has been promoted to Creative Services Director. Monique has been at WKYC doing creative promotions for quite some time, so this is exciting for all involved.
STACY YACOBOZZI (that’s her in the picture) got promoted to Manager of On-Air Promotion and Media. The Baldwin Wallace College grad has done a lot of special events and also done promotion at crosstown WEWS.
New to the mix is Writer- Producer DAN CANTERNA, who moved north from his promo slot at FOX in Cincinnati. He has a degree from Ohio State and worked as a Graphic Designer at Raycom’s Myrtle Beach, SC station.
All this of course no doubt makes VP of Advertising and Promotion MICKI BYRNES a very happy lady. Well Dunne! Monique, Stacy, and Dan.

For beautiful hair – let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise – walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” ~Sam Levenson

Think About This: “A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. Think About This: “The leaders I met, whatever walk of life they were from, whatever institutions they were presiding over, always referred back to the same failure – something that happened to them that was personally difficult, even traumatic, something that made them feel that desperate sense of hitting bottom–as something they thought was almost a necessity. It’s as if at that moment the iron entered their soul; that moment created the resilience that leaders need. ~ Warren Bennis

His girlfriend, Erin, and him had a celebratory dinner when he got the job, they’ve been dating for about two years.

Got interns? Then you might want to keep an eye on what’s happening on the intern-legal front.
Think About This: "There is a plan for each of us, and each of us is precious. As we open our hearts more and more, we’re moved in the directions in which we’re supposed to go. Our gifts well up inside of us and extend of their own accord. We accomplish effortlessly. How could Leonardo da Vinci not have painted? How could Shakespeare not have written? In Letters to a Young Poet, Rilke tells a young writer to write only if he has to. We are to do what there is a deep psychological and emotional imperative for us to do. That’s our point of power, the source of our brilliance. Our power is not rationally or willfully called forth. It’s a divine dispensation, an act of grace." ~ from A Return To Love by Marianne Williamson

Think About This: "We are often so hurt by what happened in the past that we are afraid to allow the present to just be. We project onto someone now standing in front of us the mistakes of someone we haven’t seen for years. We falsely believe that judging someone now will somehow give us more power or control over our destiny. The opposite of course is true, because judgment is the death of enchantment. And if we’re living in judgment, then we are bound to be judged!" ~ from Enchanted Love by Marianne Williamson

Think About This: “Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.” ~ from the film LOVE ACTUALLY written by Richard Curtis
