Every time one is lucky to stumble upon someone who is delightful, it feels like a present. I mean someone who shares something that makes you go…’whoa…I so get it”. Had that happen with JOHN GILLIAM, who is heading to Palm Beach to be Promo Manager for Sinclair’s WPEC. CSD ALEX SHAW picked John from under the tutelage of CSD PETE FERRARO at Sinclair’s flagship WBFF in Baltimore. He’ll be down amongst the palms in early October and will be bringing with him a background that is ideal for a creative – diverse adventures and life experiences. Take note HR folks – creative are not quite like the other little mushrooms that work at a TV station. Creatives draw from their life and outlook to be able to bring forth the ideas that make up their job. John does that and this is what he had to share about himself.. As a kid, I had the world’s coolest older brother. I remember being six or seven and my brother sat me down one Saturday and said, “Let’s build a speaker”. He tried (emphasis on tried) to show me how to construct a speaker from wood, paper, and magnets. I may not have fully understood the concepts he taught me that day, but nevertheless it ignited a spark in me. He went on to talk about how expression through media was the answer to his inner calling. One of my first jobs out of high school was teaching kindergarten. Even then I had the urge to produce something media related. In class, my students would put on historical reenactments. We would shoot them with a little Sony Handy Cam and turn them into short documentaries. The kids really enjoyed it and it gave me the opportunity to teach in a way that I loved—through film. When I went back to college, I took a one credit university seminar where we were asked to give a presentation about our first semester college experience. So I took my Handy Cam and made a 10 minute highlight reel about my experiences. At the conclusion of my presentation, my adviser stopped me and asked if I knew there was an entire department at the school dedicated to multi-media production. It had never dawned on me that I could make a living making videos. John has a Masters degree and kicked off his TV career at KFSM in Fort Smith. You’ve all heard of the brass ring…well, this is about the gold ring. Grabbing it is CSD ALEX SHAW who heads up the marketing arm of WPEC, Sinclair’s Palm Beach CBS affil. In just shy of a week, his new Promotion Manager is going to check in, and that is the gold ring in discussion. The good folks at the station will be welcoming BARRY FITZSIMMONS to the fold, and they couldn’t have found someone who’ll bring more talent and zip than Barry. Plus they’ve gotten themselves a man with a wonderful sense of humor. Let’s fact it…a sense of humor is as important as oxygen in today’s world. Many of you know Barry by his author and podcast name, the Promo Cowboy. It’s a novel as well as a Must Hear..his iTunes podcast Promo Cowboys. Do it. The Boston U grad has worked promo magic at NBC, MSNBC, ONE World Sports and ESPN as well as ABC, MLB, etc. NYC has a lot of great work done by Barry (and folks who are Promo Cowboys). He’ll be a real asset to Alex and will be working with fun talented LARRY DOYLE, who knows a thing or two about what makes poppin’ TV. See you all soon…it is The Seaon you know. Well Dunne! Barry.

If you’re hoping to get a free moment of ALEX SHAW’s time in June, well, you might be out of luck entirely. His calendar is booked…good thing the longest day of the year is June 20. June will be the month when baby Shaw #2 debuts (it’s the first part of the month – but babies seldom check iCal), the month he hits Vegas for PROMAX and the month he begins his new job as Creative Services Director of WPEC in West Palm Beach. Throw in packing, changing diapers, saying goodbye to the folks at Baltimore’s WMAR where he’s vacating the CSD slot, finding a new place to live, spending time with little Shaw #1, spending time with his wife and last but not least standing in long TSA lines…whew! Tired just thinking of it. The Boston U grad will handle it with ease. His background in TV includes Promo Producer at WSVN in Miami, Promo Producer and Editor at KCRA in Sacramento, and Director of Creative Services and Programming in Springfield, MA. Alex is returning to West Palm actually – he was once Executive Producer of Promos for WPBF amongst the palms. Let’s hear a big Well Dunne! before he’s too busy to let it sink in!

DEIRDRE CONLEY is headed to Charlotte. After an extensive search, the fine folks at Cox’s ABC affil tapped Deirdre as the new Creative Services Director at their Queen City operation, WSOC and WXAN. Deirdre will be leaving Austin (and that’s such a great town – bet it’s difficult to leave) where she’s been Creative Director of Lin/Media General’s NBC affil KXAN for several years. The Midwest lady got her degree from Butler U (known for basketball wins) and has worked in Columbus Ohio at WWHO (Lin) and Indianapolis at WISH (Lin). She’ll be hitting Charlotte at the perfect time of year to enjoy the White Water Center and escape to the NC mountains on weekends. Well Dunne! Deirdre.

Sometimes the answer to your problem is no farther away than…well than just down the hall. Such was the case when WMAR’s CSD ALEX SHAW went searching for a new creative services writer producer, an item getting to be as scarce as unicorns. Baltimore’s ABC affiliate now has found such a creative and Mr. Shaw is thrilled to tell us about ADAM MIZRAHI, who was freelancing for Alex back in November and is now a bonafide part of the creative team. Great to hear. Adam is a U of Maryland College Park grad who loves film and has worked at Percepto Studios in Charm City, as well as handled freelance projects. Sounds like this is going to be a very good pairing. Well Dunne! Adam!

Such is the case with LAURA MASSE, who is the new Executive Vice President, Marketing for NUVOtv out in LA. The NY-centric creative will absolutely love the LA winters. Laura, a Brand Builder Award honoree, has some serious background that includes being EVP Marketing for Crown, which is Hallmark, VP of Marketing for AMC and marketing slots at Discovery and TLC. CSD ALEX SHAW found the exact perfect person for the open writer producer slot he had open at WMAR in Baltimore. When he lost Sr. Writer Producer Editor SKYE BEITLER to the San Francisco area, Alex went on the hunt for someone with the skills of a techno editor and the eye of an artist. He found it in MARK HERNANDEZ, who was freelancing in the DC area. Mark hails from Richmond, although he got around as a military kid, living in Germany at one time. While in Virginia’s capital, he did some very interesting creative things, like work with RVA Magazine for 3 years as a video director/editor. Mark spent a year in Virginia State University’s Advanced Creative Services Dept as a contract director/editor/videographer and he played a key role in the creation of an Educational TV show that has since been nominated for an Emmy. He even got to do what a lot of us have no doubt contemplated – send one of those Angry Bird characters into near space – Mark did it as part of their "Angry Birds In Space" Campaign launch. He’s already hard at work in Charm City, and Alex is a happy man. Well Dunne! Mark.

WMAR ABC2, the E.W. Scripps Media, Inc. owned ABC affiliate in Baltimore, MD has an immediate opening for a creative, motivated, design oriented editor/producer to join our Creative Services Team! If you are a passionate editor with expert level experience in Final Cut and the Adobe Creative Suite, we want to hear from you.
While mid-size to large local TV market experience is preferred; web, agency, or cable post-production experience will also be considered. We are looking for a top-notch, hands-on producer who can write and edit station promotion that appeals to both traditional audiences and new media viewers as well. You won’t just produce spots, you will market ideas across all multi-media platforms. Strong writing skills are a big plus.
Conceptualize, design and edit high end promos for ABC2 News to grow viewers and ratings. Work with Creative Services Director and staff to develop and elevate the station’s on-air look and promotional aesthetic. Work in a fast-paced, deadline driven, highly collaborative creative environment. Be a team player who takes initiative without supervision to improve on-air production . It’s an exciting time of life for handsome ALEX SHAW. He’s just been named Director of Creative Services for Scripps’ ABC affiliate in Baltimore, WMAR. He’ll be moving to Balto from Springfield, MA where he was Director of Creative Services and Programming for WGGB, the ABC/Fox combo in gorgeous western Massachusetts. Alex has also done that creative thing for WBPF in West Palm where he was Executive Producer of Promotions at the Hearst ABC and before that he was out in Sacramento at another Hearst operation, KCRA. The Boston U grad got his start in promo at WSVN in Miami. Along for the move to Baltimore is his new bride, Cheryl, who tied the knot with Alex last month.
