What a lovely Monday…and now a lovely post about a great guy who has landed a job with a GM that he calls great as well. Tony the Tiger should be reading this… ANDY SCHWABE is already on the job in Birmingham, Alabama as the CSD of WIAT, the Nexstar CBS in the Heart of Dixie. Andy’s looking forward to bringing his two adorable daughters to visit next week and the threesome will have fun exploring the new city. Andy comes over from a short-lived gig in Texas and from a Marketing Director slot in Tucson at KGUN, Promo Manager slot at WTVR in Indy, Ass’t Promo Mgr at KOCO in Minneapolis and promo producer roles at CBS’ KYW in Philly and WTVJ in Miami. He’s a man who works in TV so he can be a great dad. Let’s all shout out a big Well Dunne! Andy.

Tyler, Texas is a lovely city east of Dallas…it’s home to the famous Rose Festival. And now it’s home to promo pro ANDY SCHWABE, who is unpacking boxes this Memorial Day weekend. He’s relocated and about to embark on a new adventure job-wise when he begins at Neptune, a company providing platforms and content for schools, universities, water parks, etc. It’s a super company full of former TV types, again proving there is a good life after the day to day grind of TV. Andy had been in Tucson, which is a long distance from his adorable daughters. Tyler is much closer…another win. To ice the cupcake, he’s going to have dinner with WBAL former promo pro KERRY RICHARDS. Small world…yes. And a happy one. Well Dunne! Andy.

This Sunday, former WFAA and Waco promo pro BILL CASTELLO is getting married! More info on that after the event, but do think good thoughts on Sunday for him.

JOHN DUNNE served in WW2….he was the guy who built bridges for the troops to go over then blow them up. He was already in France on D-Day (think Private Ryan) and liberated Rome, Paris, Berlin…and Bergen Belsen. He survived Monte Casino, served in North Africa and had R&R in Casablanca. His feet froze and were saved by a British MD. He had a funny scar on his head where a bullet grazed it. He was one of the first to come back having racked up many points. He seldom if ever talked about it. As the World War 2 vets leave us, let’s all make sure we give thanks to the literal army of men who were honestly the greatest generation.

Think About This:  All you have to do is hold your first soldier who is dying in your arms, and have that terribly futile feeling that I can’t do anything about it… Then you understand the horror of war.”  ~  Norman Schwarzkopf

Retirement. It used to be word that conjured up icons of rocking chairs, fishing poles, and eating dinner at 4 in the afternoon. No more. Not even close. Retirement now is like the curtain coming down on one act of a play, then going right back up for the next one.  F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that there are no second acts to American lives. He would not write that today. All this is prelude to announcing that SAM JONES is going to retire from his promo job at KMBC in KC. Sam’s been Sr. Writer Producer at the Hearst ABC affil as well as doing promo as Sr. Producer at WITI, Fox in Milwaukee. Down in Shreveport at KSLA, he produced commercials. Sam, let us know what Act 2 will be – we’re all ready to applaud. No matter what, enjoy! Well Dunne! Sam.

If this looks odd. please forgive. Gremlins are in the Macs tonight and I just don’t have the energy to fix it right now…. 😉

Southern living isn’t just a magazine with great recipes and striking decorating ideas. Southern living is the pace, social mores and lovely lilt to life lived south of the Mason Dixon line…where thank you notes are still a thing and calling on neighbors to sit and chat over iced tea is done regularly. Getting his first taste of genteel southern life is PETER NOLL, who is the newest resident of Meridian, Mississippi. Besides unpacking from his move from California, PETER’s dance card will be full, what with him being the new Group Director of Marketing and Promotions for Waypoint Media. He’s wrangling Waypoint’s TV stations in Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Indiana. Peter has worked in marketing and as GM in Tulsa at KJRH, Bakersfield at KERO, WEWS in Cleveland … all after starting at KHOU in Houston. Normally, this is where we say Well Dunne! Peter, but let’s put a southern spin on it and say Well Dunne! Ya’ll.

Job Alert – Producer The Morning Blend KGUN Tuscon (tell ANDY SCHWABE hi!)

There’s nothing liberating, encouraging, exciting or smart about putting people in boxes and not letting them go. Sure, there’s the literal meaning with the accompanying legal repercussions, but the reality in most cases is the aggravating everyday practice of funneling talent into a box they’re already in and not allowing growth. More clearly, if you aren’t doing exactly a certain job phrased in the exact language used in an ad, then you have zero chance of even making a case to do the job in question. In other words, you’re in a box with no clear supportive development path. It stinks and it has to stop. Nobody finds their higher and best self in repetition. More on this to come…along with a very exciting announcement. Stay tuned.

“I was only there such a short time when the call came.” This is how the conversation with GABE LUNA began. Gabe is a major favorite (thank you LAUREL PORTIE) and a totally creative ‘One To Watch’ who is the new Promotion Manager of Scripps’ KGUN in Tucson. The call he refers to is one from his father, who had gotten the green light for a double lung transplant. Of course Gabe had to be there, so into the car he jumped and drove I-10 to San Antonio, no doubt in record time. His boss at KGUN, ANDY SCHWABE, and the rest of the management team was supportive, even with the November ratings book workload. Now THAT, people, is a good operation. Andy is a leader who described his new hire this way: “He’s going to bring fresh creativity and energy to our already fantastic group of talented marketing professionals." Papa Luna is slowly recovering, and if you have any extra good thoughts you might want to send them his way. Gabe is back in Arizona, hard at work at KGUN and has a plateful of blessings for which to be thankful next Thursday. Gabe is a San Antonio guy who attended SAC (San Antonio College, which is nearly next to the best restaurant in town) and worked as Production Director of the Trinity Broadcasting Network before jumping into promo work at Sinclair’s operation in the Alamo City. He also honed his promo chops in Seattle. Get Well to Gabe’s dad and Well Dunne! to Gabe.

Sending condolences to KLAS CSD HENRY VASQUEZ who lost his mother this week.
