Anybody remember blow up toys that were punching bags? They looked like a clown, right down to the punchable red rubber nose and when you punched them, they’d rock back and then go forward at an unbelievably fast rate, usually hitting you in the face. Did I mention they were kid size? It seems that life has been that blow up clown in recent weeks. One thing after the other…pow, pow, pow. So if you haven’t yet been written up, take some deep breaths. You will be. Unless the clown bops us in the face again.

Tomorrow more about how Florida is doing…How Houston is doing…and we catch up with a lot that’s been simmering.

The good folks at Stephen Arnold Music wanted me to pass along the fact the WJLA campaign using their Waking Up My Day music (shout out to Promo Manager BONNIE WOOD) is not part of their brand new campaign called Ready. Just know all their music is Well Dunne! (and more).

Think About This:  “How Not to Respond to a Flood” by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson
Don’t respond with theology.
God isn’t angry, and God doesn’t want devastation.
Your sin didn’t cause the flood
that swept away your home, your town.
God doesn’t punish Houston, and
didn’t punish Miami or San Francisco, or New Orleans,
because God isn’t in the storm.
God weeps at our suffering. God loves.

Don’t respond with politics.
Hate government assistance later;
dismantle welfare tomorrow.
This is a time for us all to unite
to offer assistance,
to protect the weak and endangered.
Remember to feed the hungry
and clothe the naked.
The Bible and the government both agree on that.

Don’t respond with gree
Raise prices later,
on something else.
Not on housing or food, or medicine.
Not when people are soaked, tired, and terrified.
Do you rob the poor to line your pockets?
God cherishes the poor and the needy.

Don’t close your doors.
The point of your great big building is the people it can shelter.
You can always redo the floors
or get another carpet.
The time to shelter the homeless is now.
God wants to send an Ark.
Be that Ark.

As you treat the least of them …

Respond with compassion,
Respond with deeds of kindness,
Respond with open hands,
Respond with love,

… so shall you be treated.

“I’m leaving paradise.” STAN MELTON JR sure knows how to perk up a person’s ears – starting a phone call with a very good promo line. The paradise of which he speaks is San Diego and his slot as Creative Services Director of Scripps’ KGTV, the ABC affiliate in a market with the beach, mountains, desert, perfect weather, foreign access and La Jolla, among other things. What would lure Stan away from such perfection? The call of home and the desire to make his family happy. Contrary to what Tom Wolfe has to say, Stan et familia are going home to Washington DC. Not just to their city home, but Stan is going to be Creative Services Director at WJLA. Yes, he had that job at one time. Wonder if they kept the business card template. He’ll be working with Promo Manager BONNIE WOOD as well as a few new creative faces. Stan’s son is growing up fast and all his friends as well as extended family will be welcoming the Meltons. He sounded happy about DC but hates leaving the station and the beach. Yes, his house on the beach is up for grabs, as is his old job. A great big Well Dunne! for the uber-creative and ever charming Stan.

Wasn’t that the best…several days when we all caught our breaths, took time to realize our extraordinary lives are gifts…when we thought of those we love and might have gotten to spend time with them…when we smiled and laughed and let happiness share our spaces. May your holiday have been restful and energizing and most simply marvelous.

Speaking of most simply marvelous, one of the best people in the biz, and someone who is considered part of the family, has a new adventure before him. PHIL KRAFT is going to San Diego.  He’ll be the Sr. Writer Producer for Scripps’ KGTV working with both CSD STAN MELTON JR and Promo Manager LEILA STILLWELL at the ABC affiliate. Phil will be sadly leaving WJLA in DC, but he is rather happy to depart winter. A warm weather man by nature, Miami is where he grew up. He’s been at WJLA twice (loves it that much) as well as KPIX in San Francisco, KTVT in DFW, WFTV in Orlando, and WCNC in Charlotte where he began his Promo life, rescued from editing news. He and Stan are going to rekindle an old work relationship….Stan was his boss at WJLA at one time. The cross country adventure is on…and we’re sending Phil all the best wishes for his new job and many a Well Dunne!

Job Alert – Promo Pro BONNIE WOOD and WJLA are going to need to replace Phil, so all you writer producers out there, you know what to do now.

Ah, the beginning of a new week. For ZOHRA ALNOOR, it’s the beginning of a new chapter in her TV career. She’ll be walking through the doors of ABC affil WJLA in suburban DC to take on the role of Producer for the wonderful BONNIE WOOD, who’s wrangling the department at the Sinclair outlet. Zohra has been over at FOX in DC doing production duties for the last three years…and she interned there as her first TV job after getting her sheepskin from George Mason U. In her new role, she’ll be working with the one and only producer PHIL KRAFT, who knows how to edit (and teach editing) better than anybody. Well Dunne! Zohra. Proud of ya!

Know what a coffee nap is? It’s the best way to get fully alert and it only takes 20 minutes. No kidding…it’s a coffee nap and every creative needs to lobby for them immediately. Backed up by science, thank you.

When two talented, sparkling and wonderful creative come together, its such a happy and possibility-filled moment. And we have such a moment upon us…..DC’s CHRIS CICATELLI is heading to Houston to work with DALE LOCKETT and his team at Gannett’s KHOU. Chris has been in DC quite some time, even has his degree from University of Maryland at College Park. He’s been on-air and behind the scenes, at one time as CSD at BET and most recently doing creative at ABC affil WJLA. And yes, if you were at the DMV and saw  DC On Point, that was his baby and yes, he did a super job on-camera. WJLA’s BONNIE WOOD will definitely miss him when he decamps the capital and heads towards the Bayou. Lovely news….Well Dunne! Chris.

Yes, there is life after television. TODD LONG, who writes comedy and is talented in so many other ways as well, is using all that background of his to bring video to Raytheon, where he’s officially Senior Visual Effects Artist. He learned a lot doing TV promo at WAFF in Huntsville as well at net affiliates in Omaha and Victoria, TX. Always glad to hear about excellent transitions. Well Dunne! Todd.

How did you start your day. Bet it wasn’t as much fun as the folks in Vegas, where they did a 5K down the Vegas strip with Dr. Oz. Seen on the scene were WXYZ’s DAVE BAUMANN (looking muy fit), KJRH’s SAMANTHA KNOWLTON, WNCT’s MARC MORRISTON (who quipped that the run should have been named the ‘I’m not in shape 5K”), MARIAH GARDNER of WAGT and WJLA’s BONNIE WOOD. Way to go kids…wear those I Did The Strip With Dr. Oz shirts with pride. Well Dunne!

DC is hot this time of year. Literally. And it just got hotter with the news that ANDREA LAIGN will be joining the Fox creative team in the nation’s capital. Her new title under VP MIKE HENRY is Senior Writer Producer, and she’ll be absolutely fabulous. A native of the area, Ms. Andrea has worked at ABC affil WJLA under their super then-CSD STAN MELTON and the talented BONNIE WOOD…and just down the road at Hearst’s WBAL in Baltimore.  The high energy lady also worked at KPRC in Houston, so she’s bringing a lot of know-how to the new assignment. A new media kind of girl, Ms. Laign has some of my favorite Facebook posts and a darn cute dog.  Well Dunne! Andrea.

A Well Dunne! to Apple, who as of July 20 is giving all their store employees a $4 an hour raise. Is there a better way to share their wealth and help global economics than that?

Heading back east is PHIL KRAFT, who’s returning to DC and to WJLA, where he at one time worked in the promotion department. Yes, he’ll be right at home with BONNIE WOOD and her creative crew at the ABC affiliate, although he hates leaving uber-creative DAVID HERSHEY and his award-winning team at KTVT in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Phil grew up in Miami but his family seems to have all settled around the nation’s capital, so he’s not going to be spending all his money on plane tickets. Let’s all send Mr. K a great big Well Dunne!

BETHANN MEIER has taken the slot of Director of Marketing for The Promotional Edge, the LA firm that does fabulous special events for the cable industry. BethAnn will fit in perfectly, what with her background at MTV. Well Dunne! BethAnn!

Reding this Wednesday morning? On the West Coast? SoCal? Then pick up an issue of the LA TIMES and check out the business section – page 3. Yep,. that certainly does look like Well Dunne! Talent.

Despite all the snow that has piled up higher than rooftops (check out the shopping center parking lots if you think that’s an overstatement), our nation’s capital’s ABC affiliate WJLA is in for a treat. The return of uber super talented ANDREA LAIGN to the promotions department. Andrea had wandered into the freelance world when she turned in her WJLA key card, doing work for the National Education Association’s big hoo-ha headquarters. But she’s a TV news girl through and through. I bet Promo Manager BONNIE WOOD and News Director BILL LORD are smiling ear to ear. Andrea is bringing her awards with her and looking to do work that will garner more. Forgot to ask when Ms. Andrea gets her NEW keycard for entry…but it should be pretty soon. Well Dunne! Ms. Andrea.

LINDA BUTTON of Tooth + Nail has an interesting blog post in which she asks How are you using sound to change minds? Check it out
