When one pivots and tries new things, great things happen. And with that in mind, let’s hear it for DAMON BRYANT, late of the VP CSD slot at Tribune’s FOX affil in Kansas City, WDAF who is now the VP GM and Director of Biz Development for Devlin Design Group. Yep, the set folks. Damon is a grad of UMKC and kicked off his TV marketing career at CBS in KC where he was On-Air Promo Manager. He transitioned with the same title to WTMJ in Miami then took the CSD slot at WXYZ in Detroit. He then took on Market #3 Chicago as Director of Advertising and Promotion at WBBM/CBS and from there went to VP of Creative Services for Fox Television Stations. He’ll be a real asset for Devlin and you should take his call when he dials you. Well Dunne! Damon!
Did you know that curling is a high school sport in some parts of the country? I just found out and I want to thank former CSD now GM CURTIS MILES for the insight. Very cool, in more ways than one.
Think About This: “I want to live simply. I want to sit by the window when it rains and read books I’ll never be tested on. I want to paint because I want to, not because I’ve got something to prove. I want to listen to my body, fall asleep when the moon is high and wake up slowly, with no place to rush off to. I want not to be governed by money or clocks or any of the artificial restraints that humanity imposes on itself. I just want to be – boundless and infinite.” ~ Word Porn
The Lion King explains it all. It’s a circle of life. Back in the early days of TV, Ben Casey started with a simple chalkboard graphic of man, woman, birth, death, infinity. That’s it. All the rest are details. All the changes, the heartbreak, the love and tears…all the saying goodbye and saying hello, starting fresh and going into pre-programmed mode. It’s all the circle of life. This blog (someone get a new name puhLEASE) is about that, and you need to know that you are thanked, valued and even cherished for any time and or attention spent here.
Now a few quick catch-ups: Well Dunne! to RILEY SEXTON who traded her Manager, Platform and Affiliate Marketing slot for Associate Director of Affiliate Marketing for Fox Broadcasting Company in LA. The SMU grad did some great stuff for KMSP in Minneapolis before heading west.
Condolences to Well Dunne! Talent’s DENA YASNER and her significant other LOREN. Loren’s mother passed this week. Loren is the kind of son we all hope our sons will be.
GM CURTIS MILES at WAOW in Wausau has a new CSD, namely KRISTI SCHREIBER, a native Wausan (is that correct…Wausan?) who is totally slammed with the new job. But Well Dunne! Kristi.
Think About This: “Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better
and happier. Be a loving expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. To children, to the poor, to all who suffer and are lonely, give always a happy smile. Give them not only your care, but your heart.” ~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta
We all hear about ‘keep at it’ and ‘persistence’ and ‘never give up’…almost ad naseum. But the truth is…the fact is…it works. And the best example of this tenacity is CURTIS MILES. For a very long time, the General Manager slot has been what his heart desired. Yes, he loves the world of TV promo/marketing/creative, but the ability to be the GM, to truly steer the station…that’s been what the Iowa native has focused on. It wasn’t easy. There’s a very wrong concept amongst many hiring entities that creative are far inferior to be a GM than sales people. Good thing the folks at Quincy Media know a thing or two…they’ve announced that Curtis is starting as GM at their ABC affil WAOW in Wausau, Wisconsin. He’ll being the end of July and will be saying good-bye to 13 years with ABC Television. He’s currently Vice President of Creative Services and Local Programming for Chicago’s WLS-TV. Curtis has been CSD at ABC’s WTVD in Raleigh as well as then-Belo’s WVEC in Norfolk. He was Promo Manager at Hearst’s WTAE in Pittsburgh and consulted for Magid. His first job in TV – photog for KGAN in Cedar Rapids. Nobody could be as happy for him as the person writing this. Well Dunne! Curtis.
Tomorrow, news about San Diego’s KGTV.
Job Alert – Writer/Producer/Editor GSN TV Santa Monica
Think About This: “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” ~ Randy Pausch from The Last Lecture

There’s just something about Midwesterners. It’s a solidness, perhaps. A sense of ‘doing the right thing’ and not expecting applause for it. A sensible approach to life that doesn’t eliminate crazy but knows when to go there. Yes, Midwesterners are an ideal cup of tea. JAMIE PETERSON is a Midwesterner who originally hails from Iowa (did you read that CURTIS MILES?). The Quad Cities to be more precise. He spent summers at Osage Beach, which this Missourian knows well. Jamie chose college at Arizona State in Phoenix, which was a real switch from the verdant spaces near the Mississippi’s banks – and he loved the desert. Stayed there. Jamie is the new Brand Manager of TEGNA’s NBC affil, KPNX, in The Valley of the Sun, having come from his startup, RedCouch Studio, which focused on boutique TV production and creative concepting. With a background based in art (ask him about the Sistine Chapel of stained glass…no, ask him) he’s got fresh eyes and a lot of enthusiasm as well as a background in the agency biz. So great to meet him! Looking forward to those little Mexican food hole-in-the-walls. And best wishes to his new bride as well…lots going on with him. Well Dunne! Jamie.
Job Alert – Marketing Producer WLBT Jackson MS
Today’s Think About This is not a plug for the amazing talent that Well Dunne! has on the roster, but about the importance of communication…..(the talent is just a bonus….)
Think About This: “Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.” ~ Stephen Hawking

JOE EARLEY did a bang-up wonderful job when he was with Fox Television Group, starting as a publicist, moving to President of Marketing and Communications before being tapped COO for FOX Television Group. Now he’s on the move again. After taking January off, he signed on as President of The Jackal Group, which is Gail Berman’s co-venture with Fox Network Group to produce all kinds of entertainment, from scripted to film to even theatre. Gail is a FOX alum herself – she was President of Entertainment at Fox. Whew. Fireworks will no doubt ensue. Well Dunne! Joe.
Condolences to WLS’ VP Creative Services and Local Programming CURTIS MILES, who lost his father suddenly over the weekend.
Think About This: “When I think of death, and of late the idea has come with alarming frequency, I seem at peace with the idea that a day will dawn when I will no longer be among those living in this valley of strange humors. I can accept the idea of my own demise, but I am unable to accept the death of anyone else. I find it impossible to let a friend or relative go into that country of no return. Disbelief becomes my close companion, and anger follows in its wake. I answer the heroic question ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ with ‘it is here in my heart and mind and memories.”” ~ Maya Angelou

Iowa – the heart of America; home state for one of my favorites (WLS’ CURTIS MILES) as well as today’s creative DARRIN FULLERTON, who is returning to Iowa in his new job. Darrin takes up the creative mantel at Sinclair’s CBS affil, KGAN in Cedar Rapids. The Morningside College grad will be making the switch from LIN’s Wichita operation, which is NBC in that part of Kansas. If you’re into calls, they include KSNW, KSNC, KSNK, KSNL, and ESNW. Whew. Just keeping up with that list is a fulltime job. An accomplished graphic designer, he’s worked at KMEG in Sioux City as Promotions Director, worked at a radio station as Continuity Director and began his TV career at KTIV in Sioux City. Love a man who mixes radio and TV. In Cedar Rapids, he’ll be closer to family, which is the #1 reason so many of us pack up and grab a new opportunity. All the best and Well Dunne! Darrin.
CYNTHIA TURNER, the famous Cynopsis founder and all-round great creative, has a new calling. She’s entered the non-profit world, and that means it will never be the same. Cynthia is the new Chairman of Norwalk-CT based Halles Hope, Inc. Click on the name and read all about it. Halle’s Hope is dedicated to building hope and possibilities for children and was created in memory of her granddaughter. What? You say you want to contribute? YES YOU DO! It’s all about helping, and Cynthia will no doubt make the world so much better. Well Dunne!

Time flew too fast to get this properly written. But fear not….things will improve. First, know that PAUL CHAPLIN is Assistant Creative Services Director at WESH if that wasn’t clear from yesterday. Second, shout out to ABC VP CURTIS MILES and the best phrase of 2014 – rank flubbery. Carry on.

Think About This: "Birth and death, old and new, mourning for what was while waiting expectantly for what is to come. "In-between times" can have an abundance of opposites. It is best to be in such times of transition gently and quietly, not rushing the process but taking it a day at a time." ~ Ruth Hanna

Butch and Sundance. Martin and Lewis. Miles and Kahle. Yes, you probably know the first two as great pairings. Well, Miles is CURTIS MILES, VP of Programming and Creative at ABCs WLS in Chicago and Kahle is KHRIS KAHLE, his soon-to-be new Assistant Creative Services Director. It’s the third time the two have worked together…and the pairing seems to be a success for everyone involved. Khris will be departing ABC’s WTVD in the Raleigh-Durham market (that was station #2 where the two collaborated). KHRIS and family will be hitting the Miracle Mile just in time to check out the holiday décor… Well Dunne! Khris.
Job Alert – Assistant Creative Services Director WTVD Raleigh-Durham. Send your stuff to the lovely KRISTIE GONZALES Kristie.email@example.com
Think About This: "So often we try to gird ourselves to face a harsh and difficult world when we might instead gentle both ourselves and our world just by slowing down. …We could take a cue from music here: ‘Rest’ is musical term for a pause between flurries of notes. Without that tiny pause, the torrent of notes can be overwhelming. Without a rest in our lives, the torrent ~ Julia Cameron
Every now and then, I get to write about somebody special…and today is such a day. Yes, all the cool folks who are getting new slots are special, but this one particular announcement is like having my brother get something wonderful. CURTIS MILES is heading to Chicago to head up the creative for ABC’s WLS, which is most exciting for Curtis’ mother, who lives in nearby Iowa and she can now see her two grandchildren more than a few times a year. Curtis is the newest member of the VP Club with his new title: VP of Creative Services and Programming. He’ll be heading north after the first of the year, no doubt with a new coat and gloves. He’s been at ABC in Raleigh, WTVD, as CSD. His new GM in The Windy City is his old GM from NC. Nice. Curtis has done creative leadership at Belo’s WVEC in Norfolk as well as being Promo Manager at WTAE in Pittsburgh and WTAJ in Altoona, PA. He’s even worked at Magid. He has a Masters Degree from U of Iowa. A great big ol’ Well Dunne! Curtis and family.
Think About This: “The loneliest people are the kindest. The saddest people smile the brightest. The most damaged people are the wisest. All because they do not wish to see anybody else suffer the way they do.” ~ Anonymous (thanks to KABC’s JORDANA HOUCHINS)
Who would have thought a hot dog commercial from Pittsburgh, PA would lead to a morning news promo for ABC in Raleigh. But it did, thus underscoring the concept that super ideas can be anywhere, one just need to be open to possibility. Enter the subject: Z1, a 21 year-old who hails from Steel City. He’s the talented musician who wrote then rapped Raleigh-Durham’s WTVD’s newest promo for their Morning News. Could say “from AM to Z1”. Z, which I believe is his nickname, comes from a family of seven children, all entertainers. They have their own non-profit, http://www.kidnationfoundation.com/, and they go around to regional schools and perform for students who have 4.0 gpa’s. They call it the honor roll tour. The WTVD creative team is led by CURTIS MILES. Take a gander here. And let’s chime in with a Well Dunne! all of yas.

Many of you are extraordinary bosses and also work for extraordinary bosses. Here’s a Must Read for everybody on how to be extraordinary. http://www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/8-core-beliefs-of-extraordinary-bosses.html
Think About This: "Many people spend a great deal of time complaining about the government, their parents, and the sorry state of affairs in the world, but in doing so they forget that we are the miracle. They blame God for the suffering that surrounds us saying, ‘How could a loving God allow such things to happen?’ They behave like slaves who blame an overseer, forgetting that free will has given them the responsibility, so that the deeper issue has nothing do with God or the government but rather with the fundamental shift that must occur in the human heart if peace is to become a reality. We think of responsibility as a burdensome obligation when in fact it is a gift." ~ Darren John Main
CORY BOWLER is going to use his marketing skills in a different way. He’s over in East Texas at the Rose Capital, Tyler. Gorgeous town, Tyler. Finally, a device that tracks brain waves while one watches TV.

Enthusiasm is such a powerful state of mind and behavior. I hear that enthusiasm is running over in the new writer producer at CBS’ KOVR in Cali Capital Sacramento. Coming onboard the creative team headed by CSD DREW FOWLER is SHAD SELBY (great name btw) who is making the transition from an ad agency environment to the station-side. Shad, who hates to admit it but his first name is the name of a fish, hails from Pasadena, Santa Barbara and Lake Tahoe. Three fave locales. He was Creative Director at Astone/Crocker/Flanagan and was producer and director for all the TV and radio spots at the Sacto agency. He’s in good hands…when I talked with him, he was getting writing tips from Promotion Manager DON SMITH. Great station you have there, Shad. Well Dunne!
Hurray for JOHN MILLER of NBC and his new slot. Read about what the NYTimes has to say about it all. Well Dunne! Well Dunne!
Oops…for quite some time now, I’ve listed a CSD open slot at WDSU down in New Orleans. Not true. And it was definitely not what the REAL CSD wanted to see at all. No kidding. Our most sincere apologies to BILLY PILGRIM, who is heading the creative efforts at Hearst-owned NBC affil in the Crescent City. Seems the confusion stemmed from a old web page listing the opening, and WD!TB checks open jobs via the web. Billy, I’ll buy the Hurricane next time I’m in town.
Happy belated birthday to WTVD’s CURTIS MILES! You never look any older. How do you do that?
Think About This: "So many fail because they don’t get started – they don’t go. They don’t overcome inertia. They don’t begin." ~ W. Clement Stone
What kind of holiday is KEVIN KIRKALDIE going to have? He’s the Creative Services Director of Media General’s NBC affiliate WSLS in Roanoke, VA. Well besides having a gorgeous part of the country in which to celebrate, Kevin is going to spend his first holiday as a dad. He and his wife welcomed daughter Savannah this past weekend. Sending the family warm wishes and lots of our best thoughts. Well Dunne! Kirkaldies.
Spending time at Disneyland this past weekend was Well Dunne! Talent’s KEVIN MACHADO. Nothing like some magical time with Mickey and Company.
Was that WTVD’s CURTIS MILES at the Dolphins home game Sunday? Why yes, yes it was. A lifelong Miami fan, Curtis finally got to see his favorite team play. And he got to take his two sons with him as well. It was just like they say on the credit card commercial – priceless.

Hope your week is finding you in the part of the US that is NOT freezing. Don’t forget to share your hot news…easy as going to Facebook or LinkedIn.
Think About This: "You’ll encounter many obstacles along the road to living your dreams. Some obstacles may be real, some imagined, some may be tangible, and some may be intangible. Some of those obstacles will be created by others, and some will be self-imposed. However they manifest, you will always be given the choice as to whether you give them power." ~ Francine Ward
More than the weather is hot in Raleigh. ABC’s WTVD has two new additions to the creative services department. Starting September 10 will be RONALD SAAVEDRA. The graphic artist returns to the station where he once interned. Cool. He’s a native of Fayetteville, NC and will be coming to the NC capital city from Cape Coral, FL, where he was with WFTXFOX4. He’s also done that artistic thing for News 14 Carolina in Raleigh. He won’t need a GPS to find his way around…he graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. Well Dunne! Ronald.
Already on the job is Ms. DARIN DILLEHUNT. It’s a promotion for the UNC grad (with honors thanks for asking), who started in the production department less than two years ago before “quickly distinguishing herself with her considerable talents and her drive to contribute.” That’s how CSD CURTIS MILES describes her. Very nice indeed. Well Dunne! Darin.
The creative marketing team at Sony shares their How To Market A Summer Movie. Interesting for TV folks and, well, most any marketing person.
Very interesting insight into California viewing habits.
Think About This: "Stop trying to be ordinary. There is nothing special or desirable about being ordinary. In fact, it is totally unacceptable. You are an extra-ordinary being who must go into motion, into movement so that you will draw to yourself the equivalent of yourself. You have become an energy field that magnetically draws you to that which you are." ~ Jack Boland
The effervescent HOLLY MAY is now getting settled in her new Promotion Manager slot at Sinclair’s ABC affil in the Winston-Salem/High Point/Greensboro market. She’s making the switch from her old producer job at Milwaukee’s WDJT in Milwaukee, a CBS affiliate owned by Weigel. She describes herself as a girl who grew up “everywhere” which includes Maryland, Georgia and Tennessee. She’s in the perfect place to buy furniture, which her new house will need. Life’s got a birthday on her horizon as well. All good. Well Dunne! Holly.
And yes, WDJT is currently looking for a topical writer producer.
SO YIM KIM is setting into her #2 graphic artist role at WFAA in Dallas. The flagship Belo ABC affil in Dallas is a hot spot for her. So makes the change from WTVD, ABC’s station in the Raleigh Durham market, where she did great work for CSD CURTIS MILES. Well Dunne! And yes, Curtis is looking for a great artist to fill her shoes.
Go shark Yourself.

For the artist amongst us, CSD CURTIS MILES at ABC O&O WTVD in Raleigh Durham is on the hunt for an artist. He’s in need of a #2 who can do a bunch of after effects on promos and a little news. Let him know if you’re interested. Good company. Great benefits.
Boy oh boy, those guys at BIGSMACK – they did a bang up job on the pre-launch campaign for A&E’s The Glades…and it worked. Tons of eyeballs to the premiere. The smiles you see are on the faces of Creative Director ANDY HANN and his EP’s HEIDI ERNEY and KELLY DIALS and their team. Well Dunne! everybody.
