Things are C-O-L-D and you don’t need any more clichés or smarty pants taunts about it. Perhaps a  few ‘drop in’ comments for those who are toughing it out might warm things up. Like WGBA CSD MATTHEW SMITH, who will see negative 23 in Green Bay today (Wednesday) instead of only negative 15 at his former station in Detroit. The cold weather might keep Stephen Arnold Music’s DAVE BAUMANN from his thespian turn in The Music Man at the Berman Center…they debut on Thursday so it’s still undetermined. They have snow up to there as well. There will be no mail delivery in Iowa. Like ALL of Iowa…no mail Wednesday. None in Wisconsin, and parts of Illinois and Minnesota and Missouri and – you get the idea. BOB ST CHARLES, CSD at FOX59 in Indianapolis (Wednesday low predicted to be negative 30 with wind chill) has a fireplace and a dog, so that’s one way to hunker down. Don’t do anything stupid, people. Or to quote my dad, don’t freeze anything off you might need later…

Besides knowing how to write, edit, plan, concept, do meetings, write reports and manage other creative people (think herding cats)…there are those TV marketing folks who take to the boards. Last night , WCIA’s PETE BARRETT was on stage in Champaign, IL, singing those Abba hits in the musical Mama Mia. Yes, he sings – and dances as well.  Pretty amazing. Up Detroit way, DAVE BAUMANN, who is the Marketing and Creative Director of Stephen Arnold Music, has himself let his inner thespian loose this year when he was in Guys & Dolls. The photos were priceless. Back down in Maine, JOHN SCHRANK is a regular on stage in Portland when he’s not working promo-side at WGME. LEE COOLEY turned his CSD knowledge and now directs plays in the Phoenix market. Won a big award for it as well – a Zonie. So ladies, any of you have the actress bug?

It’s happening at 4 in the afternoon over at Grand Ballroom F at the Mirage. It’s Battle of the Promo Superstars, hosted (moderated, emceed…) by the one and only DAVE BAUMANN. Dave is a man of taste and style who’s Marketing and Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. Stephen, btw, has the best hair in the business. Back to Dave, who’s wrangled five incredible CSD’s who’ll go head-to-head with the same story to see who rocks the ‘best’ promo. Competing are LARRY WATZMAN of WBNS/Columbus Ohio, JAMIE HOLMES of KPTV/Portland O, SCOTT ALTUS of KOMO/Seattle, ROBYN KEENEY of KOVR/Sacramento and KELLEN DARGLE of WKYT in Lexington. Robyn is a grad of our Topical Boot Camp, so the Vegas odds are on her (shameless self promotion) as the spot that ya’ll remember best. Right SYDNEY? Bet they’re all going to inspire. As the old radio drag race spots used to say, Be There!

Observations from SYDNEY RUBIN from PROMAX/Vegas: Well Dunne! to the Sony Distribution folks – talkin’ to you RACHEL MIZUNO– on The Goldbergs presentation: an 80’s classroom. Very clever and on theme with the show. They didn’t just phone it in. They topped it off with a clear plastic zip “pencil bag” from that era filled with the erasers of the time and Pop Rocks.

What’s with the tabloid-type shows? A trend? Did anybody think to have temp tattoos for the tabs as a promo? Washable…

What happens when two class acts and all-round great guys combine their efforts? You get the combo of DAVE BAUMANN and STEPHEN ARNOLD, that’s what happens! Mr. Dave is the new Marketing and Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. Brilliant. Dave’s had music in his soul and this seems like the dream job one often conjures. His background in marketing is as impressive as his smile – CSD at WXYZ in Detroit, Marketing Director of KSTP in his home state of Minneapolis, Marketing Director of KIRO out Seattle way and Senior Graphic Designer at Twin Cities Public TV. All long runs with award-winning output and results. One of the best parts of the new adventure is he won’t be relocating from Detroit. He and his better half love it there. Stephen Arnold is the head man for the music company that bears his name and the music you hear on many, many stations around the world. Would mentioning the network jobs be too over the top? Let’s hear it for Dave. One. Two. Three. Well Dunne! Dave.

JIM MCNULTY, who does fab promo work for his own shop out of DC (you should keep him in mind what with November fast approaching!) was blesse by the Pope yesterday. Beyond terrific. God bless.

It’s the perfect time to be in Michigan – summer. And its particularly sweet when you have a great new job, as is the case with PHIL KRAPOHL, who is now heading up the creative efforts at WEYI, the Sinclair-owned NBC affil in the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City market. Phil’s new gig is about an hour up I-75 from Detroit, where he was a Writer-Producer for Detroit’s WXYZ for the one-and-only CSD DAVE BAUMANN. Before WXYZ, Phil was a W/P at WJRT when Disney owned that station.  Yes, WJRT is in the Flint market, so Phil already has a handle on the Ins and Outs. BTW, Sinclair is going to build a brand new, state-of-the-art facility for the good folks at WEYI. Sweet. Well Dunne! Phil.

DEIRDRE CONLEY is headed to Charlotte. After an extensive search, the fine folks at Cox’s ABC affil tapped Deirdre as the new Creative Services Director at their Queen City operation, WSOC and WXAN. Deirdre will be leaving Austin (and that’s such a great town – bet it’s difficult to leave) where she’s been Creative Director of Lin/Media General’s NBC affil KXAN for several years. The Midwest lady got her degree from Butler U (known for basketball wins) and has worked in Columbus Ohio at WWHO (Lin) and Indianapolis at WISH (Lin). She’ll be hitting Charlotte at the perfect time of year to enjoy the White Water Center and escape to the NC mountains on weekends. Well Dunne! Deirdre.

Despite the snow, Boston WCVB’s RUSS NELLIGAN was hard at work and he wrote this: “After 8 years and 100 mile daily round trip commute,  MATT LEBOWITZ  will be working in his back yard, taking over the reigns as Creative Services Director at Providence RI’s WJAR.  Matt is awesome – WJAR is very lucky to have him. We’ll miss him dearly, but we are delighted for him.  His auto mechanic is filing a protest". That is why there’s a Sr. Promo Producer slot open in Beantown and why we’re so happy for Matt. He’s a James Madison U grad (I wonder if he remembers screenwriter KAREN LUTZ before she wrote Legally Blonde…) who also has a Masters in writing from Johns Hopkins. Wow. His first job in TV was in Richmond, VA as a production assistant at WTVR before getting hired as a promo producer at Sinclair’s flagship duop in Baltimore. He went to WBAL in Balto before heading to WJLA in DC and then the New England Spots Network in Boston. His new job will find him in Providence where he once did promo for WPRI/WNAC. And yes, I just about guarantee he will be thrilled not to spend so much time in his car! A big, snow covered Well Dunne! Matt!

One of the very talented creatives out there is now a Promotion Manager! Yes, he got the new title when we were all either shoveling snow or worrying about lack of rain (how you identify will label you a Midwest/East Coast person or a West Coast person respectively). Up at WXYZ in Detroit, at the Scripp-owned ABC affil, AARON LIVERSEDGE has been a stand-out writer producer for CSD DAVE BAUMANN. All Aaron’s stuff is amazing. Is there a prettier city in the spring than Atlanta? OK, Paris, but I’m talking domestic. Yes, Atlanta and their peachtrees in full bloom win the eyes and hearts of anyone who loves gorgeous. The timing of Atlanta in the spring is going to work out perfectly for DAVID TALLARICO. David is the new Promotion Manager at CBS’ WGCL, or as they brand themselves CBS46 and Peachtree TV (see, Peachtree is big business there). After not just one but two periods at WJAC, the Johnstown PA Sinclair NBC (once as producer and then again as CSD), David will bid adieu to Pennsylvania. He’s a PA boy with a degree from University of Pittsburgh and time as a producer at WPXI in The ‘Burgh. . Best of luck with your new job, David, and you’ll love working with your boss JEFF HOLUB. Today is the first day ERIN MARTIN is spending as Promotion Manager at Scripps’ WXYZ in Detroit. Ms. Erin is a Southfield, MI native (google map it) and her hire has made her new boss, CSD DAVE BAUMANN, a very happy man. The impressive Ms. Martin is coming from CBS affil WKMG in Orlando where she had the PM title. Erin has graced the promo efforts of WFTV in Orlando and started her broadcast adventure in the news departments of WOFL in O’Town and WWMT in one of my favorite places, Kalamazoo. Very Well Dunne! Erin. 

Sending healing and laughter (which is the best medicine) to Well Dunne!’s NICK SANABRIA, who is recovering from getting some knee work done. His voice is 1000% so that’s a good thing. You all do know he’s the creative behind the hilarious, but NSFW, Horserace, right?

  • Ability to find and consume the best food on this planet.
  • Minimum 2 years Creative Services experience in a design environment, boutique, post-production house.
  • Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, After Effects, and Illustrator. VizRT and Final Cut Pro experience preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency with Mac OS and Windows.
  • All aspects of promo production, including motion graphics, animation and non-linear editing.

Yes, there is life after television. TODD LONG, who writes comedy and is talented in so many other ways as well, is using all that background of his to bring video to Raytheon, where he’s officially Senior Visual Effects Artist. He learned a lot doing TV promo at WAFF in Huntsville as well at net affiliates in Omaha and Victoria, TX. Always glad to hear about excellent transitions. Well Dunne! Todd.

How did you start your day. Bet it wasn’t as much fun as the folks in Vegas, where they did a 5K down the Vegas strip with Dr. Oz. Seen on the scene were WXYZ’s DAVE BAUMANN (looking muy fit), KJRH’s SAMANTHA KNOWLTON, WNCT’s MARC MORRISTON (who quipped that the run should have been named the ‘I’m not in shape 5K”), MARIAH GARDNER of WAGT and WJLA’s BONNIE WOOD. Way to go kids…wear those I Did The Strip With Dr. Oz shirts with pride. Well Dunne!

ERIK SNELL is a Sinclair man – they keep promoting him. The Detroit native is now heading the creative team at Sinclair’s WGME in Portland, Maine (an absolutely gorgeous little city) having made the transition from Columbus, Ohio where he was On-Air Promotions Supervisor for Sinclair’s ABC/Fox combo. The Cedarville Univsersity grad began his TV career at Time Warner Cable where he produced commercials. He also was a producer at Dayton’s WKEF/WRGT duop and was Promotion Manager for WICD in Champaign, IL. Time to break out the champagne with a Well Dunne! to Erik.

Just in time for The Season, which is code for “escaping to Florida to avoid ice, snow, and cold” comes word out of Tampa of a great hire. JOSH COMBS – and his family – are now enjoying the Bay area where he is the Promotion Manager of Media General’s WFLA.  Josh is already on the job at the NBC affil, so this Christmas will be all extra happy. He’s making the switch from being Marketing Director of Nexstar’s FOX affiliate in Little Rock, KLRT. The Indiana U grad has worked in TV doing marketing and commercial creative at WMBB, ABC in Panama City as well as WBKI in Louisville. The Combs family will have a very merry Christmas indeed. FOX 31 Denver / Colorado’s Own CW2 in Denver, Colorado has an immediate opening in their highly-creative Promotions Department for an experienced team-oriented and hands-on Art Director that will not only lead.. but also inspire their team.
In this position you will provide graphic support to daily newscasts as well as assist promotions by creating top-notch motion graphics and animation.  Graphics are created using the Adobe Suite, Cinema 4D and VIZRT.  Must be able to work tight deadlines with minimal direction and be ready to lead a creative team beyond the typical.  We are looking for that "go-to person" for all things graphic… someone with fresh ideas and a unique combination of style, layout, color, balance and personality to match.  If you are the star at your current station… we are definitely interested!
Required skills: People Skills, News Graphics, Creative Team Management, Photoshop and After Effects.  (These are non-negotiable.  You need to start with these skills in your pocket!)  We are a Mac shop.
Preferred skills: Cinema 4D and VIZRT.
Willing to work a flexible schedule.  College degree in design or equivalent experience essential.  Applicants with VIZRT or scripting knowledge will get to the head of our line.

Happy New Year. Let’s all let out a “thank heavens ’09 is over” and move forward with positive energy and the hope that a blank slate will fill with wondrous events. Not that resolutions are on my list, but postings for Well Dunne! will be more up-to-date. Promise.

Long time KMOV TV Director of Operations JIM ROTHSCHILD is going to head east, leaving his hometown Arch in the rearview and set up shop as Director of Ops at legendary WRAL in Raleigh, NC. Jim’s a talented guy who has also worked at KTVI in St. Louis long ago. What a great slot he’s heading to. Well Dunne! Jim.

Well Dunne! Talent’s RICH VAN SLYKE, who has done some amazingly great work for DAVE BAUMANN at WXYZ in Detroit and JUDY SHOEMAKER at WLNE in Providence, is now the new image voice for Detroit’s  Classic Rock Station 94..7 WCSX. Rich is hot people…you should really give him a listen and sign him before his price goes up (and it will).
