KYTX GM DONNA WILSON knows a thing or two about marketing and creative…it’s her background before she got booted up to the GM office. So when she picks someone to be CSD for her station, you know they have to have the chops to shine. That person is DEVON HEFFER, who will take over the creative efforts for the CBS affil in Tyler, Texas come January 7th. Will be a busy holiday season for Devon and he’ll hit the ground running so they’ll be ready for the Super Bowl in February. And then come spring will be the Rose Festival. Devon has been in Charlotte at WCNC as Sr. Writer Producer, so he’ll stick with Tegna in this move. His first TV gig was in the news end of things at Scripps’ KSNV in Vegas and he made the switch to promo there before heading to Phoenix KNXV to hone the promo talents. He spent time teaching at Connecticut School of Broadcasting as well. Sounds like someone to keep your eye on, eh? Well Dunne! Devon.

With the weather news of the day centering on Florida, it seems rather odd to talk about palm trees, since in a bad storm they rattle about something awful. But palms have a hypnotic effect on some…the way they silhouette against sunrises and sunsets is beautiful beyond words. They denote a feeling of paradise. And they can call one to return to them, even from a far distance. Returning to the Florida palms of aptly named Palm Beach is DANIELLE JOHNSON who will be heading to NBC affil WPTV where she’s slotted to take on a multi-media marketing producer job. Good for her. She’s taking leave of KJRH in Tulsa where she’s been for five years, working with the lovely and talented GM DONNA WILSON as well as CSD PETE GEORGE. Pete told me he hates to see her go but when you have surf and sand in your veins it’s hard not to return to the Sunshine State. Donna started out in Tampa interning as part of her degree from University of South Florida. She’s been with Scripps all along (they hold on to great people) and not only was part of the promo effort in Tulsa, but Danielle is great in front of the camera. She hosted Access Tulsa. Add her MMJ chops to the fact she was chosen to be a Leadership Champion, and you’ve got a pretty sweet bundle of talent. Palm Beach is in for a treat. Danielle will love working with CHRISTINE BARON and JAMES GRIFFEL when she gets back home. Well Dunne! Danielle.

When a General Manager is happy, well, everybody is having a great day. And when a GM sends an email full of praise about a new CSD – that is a very good thing indeed. Such is the case when former promo pro now GM DONNA WILSON at Scripps KJRH in Tulsa let on that PETE GEORGE is already at work and all’s right with her world. Pete and Donna have history dating back to the time they worked together at Orlando’s WFTV. Pete is a Penn State grad who is making the switch to Oklahoma from Pittsburgh where he was Promo Manager at Sinclair’s WPMY/WPGH. He’s been head of creative at Tampa’s WMOR as well as Promo Manager in Chicago at WFLD. Let’s hear a big Well Dunne! for Pete George (two first names…no waiting…)

Living on Tulsa time isn’t just a song sung by Don Williams…it’s what RACHEL PAPP is going to be doing once she settles into the job of Creative Services Director at Scripps’ NBC affiliate KJRH located in the aforementioned T-Town. It’s her first turn at heading up creative efforts and she’s learned from hands-on experience. Her last slot was at Scripps’ sister station WPTV, NBC in West Palm Beach, FL where she was Sr. Promo Writer Producer having started as writer producer for CSD JAMES MCKAY. Ms. Rachel also worked at Post-Newsweek’s CBS affil WKMG in Orlando where she interned and then took a seat as Senior Sales Assistant. Rachel is going to be in great hands in Tulsa, where her GM is former promo pro DONNA WILSON. Well Dunne! Rachel. (PS – Rachel’s new job broke the nearly all-male streak we had going in March)
Fresh from a panel a SXSW comes more excitement from DAN SILVER who has been tapped VP of Creative for Riptide Music Group out of Culver City. They do music for trailers (most recently Noah and Wolf of Wall Street) and ads and promos, etc. They do all kinds of great music and you should check them out. Well Dunne! Dan.

KEVIN VICKERS has been promoted to Design Director at FX Design Group, where he had been both a Designer and Sr. Designer. As a matter of fact, he was the driving visionary for Tulsa’s KJRH set, which I know made GM DONNA WILSON, CSD SAMANTHA KNOWLTON and Sr. Promo Producer BRANDT DOTSON happy. Kevin has a degree from the coolest art school – Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. Well Dunne! Kevin.
Also at FX comes word that AL LAGOR is now Managing Director of Motion Design. He has a station background that includes WHDH Boston and loves sports. Well Dunne! Al.

It’s cherry blossom time in DC. Despite the snow, the cold and the general wintery weather hanging on, it’s still cherry blossom time in the capital and that means spring is not far behind. Beneath the cherry blossoms at the FOX station, there’s news to share. BRAD CRUM has been named Promotion Manager for WTTG, that’s FOX5. He’s making the switch from inside the building where he was head of Promotion and Advertising for WDCA, the MyTV affil. Brad is a Stanford grad who has worked at CBS Network in LA as well as for XM Satellite Network where he was Director of Branding and Marketing Services.
Taking Brad’s slot at WDCA is COSMO LOSCO. Gotta love the name Cosmo. That’s him in the adorable picture. The Philly native began his career at WPVI in Philly under the direction of VP Creative, LAUREN BACIGALUPI, who Cosmo credits with getting him into the world of TV Promo. He then worked for the talented JOHN BALDWIN at WGAL in Lancaster before joining DONNA WILSON’s creative team at WRC in DC. Cosmo’s been a promotion producer at WTTG and WDCA most recently. BTW, his picture gets him gold promo stars. Well Dunne! Brad and Cosmo!
That leaves FOX DC VP Creative Services MIKE HENRY on the hunt for a writer-producer. Yeah, he’s a super boss and it’s a great operation.

Every single state has snow right now. Yep, even Hawaii (the Big Island)…except Florida. Which is where we kick off today’s post. In Tampa, actually. Let’s all raise our OJ’s in a toast to the newly promoted KARLENE BALL, who is now the Promotion Manager of Scripps’ ABC affil WFTS in the Tampa Bay area. An upstate New Yorker by birth, Karlene and her then-boyfriend, now hubby, got sick to death of the winters and they did what many of us have threatened to do – quit the jobs and moved to the beach. With her degree from Plattsburg State in hand plus a resume that included FOX in Albany, Karlene found herself in Tampa and WFTS found her. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. She learned how to do TV by doing all the TV jobs, like chyron operator, and landed in the Creative Services department, where she’s steadily been honing her craft. When then-CSD DONNA WILSON got a bump to GM in Tulsa, it was Senior Writer Producer Karlene who kept things going before now CSD DENNIS ELSBURY arrived. This is a fun little twist – as Promotion Manager, she’s working with Dennis for a second time…he was Promo Manager when she first came to the station. Lots of great karma here, including the fact Karlene is a recent mom. Her 4 month old daughter is never that far away thanks to computers and the fact we can email pix all the time. Well Dunne! Karlene!
OPRAH’s very own network, called OWN as you know, is no doubt throwing kisses at the talented crew at BIGSMACK, who took the Bruce Mao Design logo and turned it into an on-air look and promo kit. They did the coolest thing – color coding the elements for each different daypart. Love that. Well Dunne! ANDY HANN and CREW.
You have plans for Thursday night, January 27? Sure, you have to be in the LA area, but other than that, there’s no reason not to spend the evening at The Geffen Playhouse (an absolutely great venue) with PROMAXbda and Neil LaBute’s latest play, The Break of Noon. PROMAX has all the deets.

Getting a kick up the corporate ladder is…drum roll please…. DONNA WILSON. Just today, the lovely Donna was named Vice President and General Manager of Scripps’ Tulsa property, KJRH. Donna’s going to take the lead at the NBC affil come June 16. Right now, she’s heading up the marketing efforts of Tampa’s ABC affil, WFTS. She’s been doing that marketing magic at places like Cox’s ABC affil in Orlando, for FOX in Colorado Springs, and wrangling the creatives for Media General. The mother of twins (now THAT is a real job!) will be trading her palm trees for oil derricks, and was in Tulsa today meeting all the folks at her new station. Well Dunne! Donna. Go get ‘em girl.
Oh, yeah, Donna is brilliant in that she uses Well Dunne!’s RICH VAN SLYKE at WFTS.
