What is it about creative people? Is it the sense of humor that permeates their thoughts? Their view of life that always delights or disturbs? The witty repartee? What possibly makes creative people even more special than all the above is the ability to see a bigger picture and reinvent themselves. And with the broadcast sector still vainly searching for an economic model that rewards creative not bean counters, reinventing is a grand skill. ROB THOMAS is doing that. The call of his home state, Arkansas, lured him to return. And like a confident creative, he set out to find a way to keep his banker happy. And he has. Rob is happy and, as a super great family man, enjoying being in Fayetteville where he’s now working in sales for Tribune’s KFSM. Fayetteville, btw, has made the list of the five best places to live in the US. Let’s face it, promo and marketing people (more about titles and how they’ve become muddy and useless tomorrow) can sell the dickens out of anything, especially TV. Rob’s done promo for stations in Little Rock and Louisville. Let’s give him the first 2018 Well Dunne!
There are a lot of Rob Thomases (is that how you grammatically make Thomas plural?) in TV. Two were doing promo in Louisville at one time. Oy! Just sayin’.

The year’s winding down, and between us all, good riddance. This has been one nasty slog – what a tough 365 days. We all lost people we love…said goodbye to talented people who made the world better. Watched as truth was turned on its head and the idea that we had fallen down a rabbit hole kept popping to mind. Some of us were doing two – three – jobs combined into one with no bump in pay and absolutely no respect for the amazing job so well done. What better place to get the Christmas spirit than Alaska, where JOHN RICE’s neighbor has a pet reindeer. Yes, in Anchorage. John, who is heading up the Denali Media properties marketing and such, even had a close encounter with a 9 foot moose in his driveway. The moose was chill, in more ways than one, and took a nap nearby. For those Christmas-holics amongst us, Anchorage should be on your list. Christmas Eve weather forecast is for snow. Let’s take a moment from logs, last minute family matters, grocery emergency runs and traffic to think about the amazing good your operations can bring about. Take, for instance, CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN of 2C Media. There isn’t anybody who puts their heart into helping like these two and their whole company. They have made the children of Puerto Rico happy after a horrible hurricane. Chris and Carla et all have tirelessly raised funds, wrangled airlines and even delivered presents themselves – all to make a difference. It’s what getting up in the morning is all about. To say Well Dunne! is just not enough.

Welcome to the world of affiliate TV, ERIN MCCAHILL. Ms. Erin is the new Head of Marketing and Brand in Washington DC at WUSA, the CBS affil. Ms. Erin has a very interesting resume that includes writing and producing promos for Nat Geo as well as for BBC America, both in the DC market. She knows her capital city. Most recently, Erin has been involved in the education side of the coin as VP of Marketing and Communications for Envision Experience. Also along the way, she’s helped brand Vocus, the PR person’s ‘go to’ resource as well as Rosetta Stone. Well Dunne!

So many creative people are lost to us when their heart chooses to stop beating. That’s what happened to ROXANN NELSON. Roxann passed away on Tuesday night. She was a promo pro who was living in the Minneapolis area, running her own insurance shop after a notable career doing TV marketing. For the last six years, she headed up Roxann Nelson Medicare and Family Health Insurance. Her TV leadership was evident in her stints as CSD for WSOC in Charlotte, Hearst in Kansas City and Creative Head for ShopNBC. Her TV marketing career began at KARE in her belove Minneapolis. She helped launch talented people and, from all accounts, her laughter and her stories were legendary. She was what Hollywood used to call A Swell Dame. In the vein of Molly Ivins. High praise indeed. Let PETE BARRETT, the busiest man in the TV biz, finish this out: Roxann Nelson, your star shines bright in our memories as a marketer, a very funny person, and as a friend. She wrote on my page regularly, and was a sympathetic ear when I was looking for work. RIP, Rox.

Time to have a little chat about BAD ANNOUNCING. OMG people, it seems to be everywhere. You hear bad announcing on networks, on stations, on national spots. It’s alarming to think that either producers have become tone deaf or they don’t understand the role of a voice in any creative project. For those whose eyes override their ears, here are a few quick tips to make sure your voice choice isn’t, to be blunt, horrible. First, not everybody can handle copy. Just like your anchor people can, by and large, handle reading prompter ideas, it’s even more true that your voice do more than just spit out words. If on hearing your spot you do not feel the emotion of the copy, then you’re hearing announcing, not interpreting. Did you spend all that time and creative capital –did you scramble to get everybody’s thumbs up for your idea – did you have to rewrite and rethink to get a spot you believe in…do you want all that to be ruined by a puker? In the entertainment world, particularly in radio, there are reads that are known as puking. Think Ted Baxter. Think bad used car salesmen. Think the guy at Happy Hour who is overly thrilled with himself. Puking was around in the 50’s on radio…small town, big sound, oh yea baby. Yuck. When assaulted by a puker, the ear recoils. No, that type of read and sound does NOT break through the clutter. It does the opposite. So beware the pukers, and sadly, they are out there and being pushed by people who don’t know anything other than how to grind money out of your organization. Avoid. Know that pukers will hurt you in the long run. Now that you’re paying attention to your voice, ask yourself if they really represent what your product is. Are you the quick and new station using a low registered ‘voice of god’ sounds-like-dad voice? Uh, no. Mismatch. Are you the #1 classic and solid choice using a light young voice? Definitely no. You get the idea. Now ask if you sound like everybody else in the market. If you need a little assist – get a market analysis from me. It’s free for the holidays. Guarantee the analysis will open your eyes to the fact MANY stations don’t stand out whatsoever. Your job is to create an image that appeals to all senses, Don’t leave out your ears. And btw, here’s an example of a puker. Now make sure you are Well Dunne!

The lure of the desert is strong, It might be what tempted CHRIS PELCZYNSKI to return to it. Chris is an Arizona State grad (an we know ASU is in Tempe) who is the new CSD at Scripps’ KTNV in Las Vegas (we all know Vegas used to be a wide spot in the desert until Bugsy Siegel had his way with it). Not only is Chris transitioning from stints in Los Angeles and Bristol, CT but also making the switch from focusing on marketing TV sports to TV news on a local level. Lots of growth happening in this. Chris was Art Director in Bristol and Creative Director in LA for the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Let’s hear it – a big cheer – for Chris. Well Dunne!

Yes, the ability to KNOW traffic is amazing and necessary. She’s been in TV before hitting Seattle…down in Roseburg, Oregon where she handled Creative Services Director / Producer / Director slots. Job Alert – Creative Services Coordinator KCPQ / KZJO Seattle The Creative Services Coordinator keeps the department running smoothly by effectively managing promo log placement strategy, maintaining promo inventory and fulfilling network and syndicated programming promotional requirements. This person works with department and station management to identify promotional opportunities and evaluate current strategies for effectiveness. Additionally, this role will work with fellow producer/editors to develop and produce promotional announcements.
- • Accurately and strategically schedule promotional announcements for Q13 FOX, JOEtv & Portland’s CW.
- • Make day-of adjustments to logs based on topical news and or station changes.
- • Keep promotional inventory regularly maintained with appropriate lengths, versions, etc. to support station priorities and network obligations.
- • Regularly identify and communicate inventory needs to department leadership.
- • Edit and localize network and syndicated promotional material.
- • Proactively monitor quality control of all promotional assets in BRUTUS system.
- • Lead department point of contact for local and remote master control operations.

It was uncharacteristically cloudy in Fountain Hills, AZ Wednesday. There wasn’t a lot of light in a place where it normally is evident in spades. The weather folks can give you a detailed reason for this odd happenstance. But the real reason is that a man who called himself the Chief Harvester of Light at Minard Nature Photography passed away. That’s how he defined himself on his LinkedIn page. That was his retirement job. LEE MINARD has left us. Nobody was kinder, more talented and a better person than Lee. He was one of the first people who introduced himself on my first job at WFAA TV. His low voice was steady and reassuring for a 21 year old who was in over her head; he told me everything was going to be all right. And it was. He treated everyone with kindness, even if he was delivering bad news. His legacy in TV marketing was not the excellent work…or the awards…or the titles. His legacy was the encouragement he shared with so many people, making them more creative and more wonderful humans. Lee headed up creative for such entities as WCBS, The Food Network, PAX TV, and a series of the best performing and best marketed stations across the country. He was an artist. Loved baseball. A semi-professional musician whose love of jazz made his eyes light up. He knew so much and shared all he knew. The world is darker and colder with his passing. His beloved family should be in your thoughts. There is nothing Well Dunne! about his death, except to say he lived his life in such a way that no doubt St. Peter met him at the pearly gates with a smiling, hugging “Well Dunne! Lee”. xoxo

OK, metaphorically close your eyes and picture a guy in love with radio and football. No, it’s not Bobby Costas. This metaphorical person went on to TV marketing after he played Fullback for two teams – the Pittsburgh Power Football team and the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks Professional Indoor Football. VERY impressive. He transitioned to TV as the Creative Services Director and Promotion Manager for WVVA, the Quincy Media NBC station for Bluefield, West Virginia. He decided to leave the mountains behind and went to work with SHERRY CARPETER at Graham Media’s WJXT in Jacksonville, where the beaches are pretty sweet. Now, he’s combining mountains (kinda) and water (think Ohio River) in his new job in Louisville. We’re talking about BRANDON LINK, newly named Assistant Creative Services Director at Hearst’s CBS station in the Kentucky Derby town. All together now…on three…hup, two, Well Dunne! Brandon.

It’s a major adventure in the works…a move from coast to coast (nearly literally)…and an exciting new resident of Seattle in the making. It’s JAY YOVANOVICH’s new slot – he’s the just-named Marketing Director for KING / KONG in the space needle city. The Tegna operation has big shoes to fill because he’s coming from WRAL in Raleigh, which is the best station in the country. Yes, it is and you all know it. Jay’s been Marketing Director for WRAL and their FOX50 sister in the North Carolina capital. He worked his way up the ladder at WRAL, starting as a promo writer producer and it’s been about 12 years since he moved from On-Air Promo Manager at Pittsburgh’s WPGH. He’s also worked in Charleston, SC doing promo for WTAT. The University of Delaware grad is into Brazilian martial arts in his spare time…and he’s quite good at it. He’s even better at getting eyeballs to screens and forging image. BTW, he’s not going to start until we turn the page on this year, so you have plenty of time to shout out to him a big Well Dunne! KRISTA MOATS is the new marketing and creative producer for FOX in Chicago. I know she’s going to put that at the top of her Thankful list this holiday. Ms Krista loves this biz and hitting market #3 is pretty exciting. She’s making the transition from South Bend IN where she was producing for Sinclair’s WSBT. No stranger to the FOX family, Krista worked for WUPW in Toledo at one time before she worked at Scripps’ WRTV in Indianapolis. What a perfect time of year to be in the Windy City. Well Dunne! Growing up in the Midwest near St. Louis offered many insightful life lessons. One was experiencing all four seasons. In the depths of winter, nothing was more enticing than the thought of sun shining through palm trees in Florida. The Cardinals had their spring training camp in St. Pete, and the stands were full of baseball fans who rather gleefully basked in the warmth while commenting on the frigid temps back home. Some of the most fervent winter avoiders were able to work and live in the Sunshine State, and one such Midwesterner is GAYLE BEATTY. Ms. Gayle is heading to Orlando, where she’ll be working with VP Creative CHRIS FRIEDRICHS at Fox’s WOFL as a writer producer for the combo stations, WRBW and WOGX. Gayle is no stranger to Florida – she’s worked for TV operations in Sarasota at WWSB where she was CSD as well as in Tampa where she was Promo Manager for WFTX, the Scripps’ ABC. The SIU Carbondale grad got her start in TV at KSNW in Wichita as Marketing Coordinator and Promo Producer and was lucky to work with DALE LOCKETT at KHOU in Houston. This coming March 17th is going to be more than just St. Patrick’s Day for two muy-talented promo guys. It’s the day that PAUL FEY and WALT JASCHEK, once known as Paul & Walt Worldwide, get inducted into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame. Paul is now President and COO of LA-based World Wide Wadio (one of the best and favorite names ever) and Walt is now writing and consulting, again with a great name, i.e. Walt Now Consulting. Yes, he’s also teaching at Webster U. The two of them had their roots in the Gateway Arch city where Paul was Ad Manager for KMOX TV (now KMOV). Their work is noted for the humor, the wittiness and the clever turn of a phrase heard on radios everywhere for such clients as CBS Network, NBC Network, Warners, King World and one time St. Louis favorite Budweiser, among others. Nothing more fun than giving hometown talent a big Well Dunne! Way to go Paul and Walt!

What a lovely Monday…and now a lovely post about a great guy who has landed a job with a GM that he calls great as well. Tony the Tiger should be reading this… ANDY SCHWABE is already on the job in Birmingham, Alabama as the CSD of WIAT, the Nexstar CBS in the Heart of Dixie. Andy’s looking forward to bringing his two adorable daughters to visit next week and the threesome will have fun exploring the new city. Andy comes over from a short-lived gig in Texas and from a Marketing Director slot in Tucson at KGUN, Promo Manager slot at WTVR in Indy, Ass’t Promo Mgr at KOCO in Minneapolis and promo producer roles at CBS’ KYW in Philly and WTVJ in Miami. Maryann knocked ‘em dead at WNCN in Raleigh and WTVD, ABC in the same market where she handled marketing for clients that was always spot on. The New York native is now GM at WHDF. Despite the time crunch such a job imposes, she and her son, Mason, have written a book together. How cool is that! Entitled Date Night With Mom, the story is a delightful tale that emphasizes being present and spending time with your children – it’s the best thing a parent can do.
