NBC’s SCOTT CHASTAIN and PROMAXbda’s topper JONATHAN BLOCK-VERK
None other than FRANK RADICE of Definition 6 and BONNIE BARCLAY of FX Design.
While the folks are convocatin’ in Vegas at the Station Summit, let’s turn our eyes east for some great news from one of the most talented guys around. BARRY FITZSIMMONS has a new gig and it’s awesome…he’s now the Global Creative Director of ONE World Sports. Added bonus – it’s in Connecticut, where Barry and family live. Barry’s accomplishments are so varied and impressive, it’s hard to start, but let’s just list a few: Creative Director On-Air for Katie, ESPN campaigns, HBO, MSNBC, Creative Director On-Air for Anderson and the list goes on. He’s not limited to TV….he’s a published author and just recently his PROMO COWBOY came out. Lovin’ it myself….you should pick it up, especially if you’re headed to the beach over the 4th. A great big Well Dunne! Barry.
Speaking of PROMO COWBOY, the winner (drum roll please) of their very own copy is DON SMITH, who is CSD at KOVR in Sacramento. Mailing it tomorrow Don. Well Dunne!
Posting pix from Vegas thanks to the best of the best: BONNIE BARCLAY. If you read this as a feed, you might have to go to the site itself to check them out, which won’t hurt you one little bit. Just click. And make sure you get to the FX Design’s suite at Planet Hollywood and bend your elbow.

Think About This: “"You’ll encounter many obstacles along the road to living your dreams. Some obstacles may be real, some imagined, some may be tangible, and some may be intangible. Some of those obstacles will be created by others, and some will be self-imposed. However they manifest, you will always be given the choice as to whether you give them power." ~ Francine Ward
Nothing like a change of scenery. Imagine (and watch how you pronounce that…as a Midwestener, the recent reminder was that it’s an ‘ah’ sound not an “e” at the start of the word) the beauty of the west as exemplified in Salt Lake City…now picture the lush beaches and palms of Florida’s Tampa Bay area. That’s what BRYAN JOHNSON has done – he’s now working hard for CSD DENNIS ELSBURY at ABC affil WFTS. He made the change from the FOX affil in SLC, KTSU. And he’s recently married, too. All change – all good. He’s a grad of Dixie State U, where he earned the Communications Student of the Year honor, and has worked at KCSG in St. George. Well Dunne! Bryan.
Station Summit is on in Vegas. The words “Hangover 4” keep coming to mind… Be on the lookout for some of the coolest folks who are going to be checking in with us…thus making the ‘what happens in Vegas’ line pretty much useless.
Well Dunne! Talent’s SHELLEY DUFFY is at the right place at the right time. Her view of the Super Moon was from the Grand Canyon. To say it’s breathtaking isn’t doing it justice. Lucky (and talented) lady.

Let’s focus on the future. No, not the immediate future of PROMAX LA and Station Summit. The real future…babies. Two such newbies are with us now, and it’s time we smile, and coo and carry on in their honor.
ERIK CANDIANI, Director of Marketing and Creative Services at KARE, welcomed a brand new daughter, making little Riley his hat trick baby. Already a stylista, Miss Riley was last seen in a Facebook picture with the most adorable headband. Great news from the Candiana family!
Out in Erik’s former stomping grounds, Denver, comes word that ROBIN HOFFMAN, the Creative Services Director of ABC affil KMGH (Scripps) has welcomed a little girl as well. Let’s hear it (but not toooo loudly) for Grace Collette. If she takes after mom, she’s going to be a real looker. Well Dunne! Hofmans.
Down in Jacksonville, TJ KING the CSD of Cox’s duop WAWS/WTEV (Fox/CBS) is awaiting a family addition the old fashioned way – no word on if they have a boy or girl on the way. It’s the old fashioned way.

Today there’s an embarrassing wealth of riches in the line of new job news. Let’s start a favorite whose announcement comes with an invite for YOU to party with her at the Station Summit. Celebrate BONNIE BARCLAY’s new job…she’s been named VP of Marketing for the FX Design Group. Perfect combo, imo. Ms. Bonnie has a very exciting resume. She’s been VP and Chief Marketing Officer for Chyron, consulted the Scripps group through her Branding Iron moniker company, and headed up Creative and Programming for WSB in Atlanta. Other stations include WSOC in Charlotte, WAVE in Louisville and WFAA in Dallas. She’s a Midwest girl – totally the best.
Now, about that party….join Bonnie, FX and Giant Octopus for a Late Happy Hour (doesn’t even kick off until after 10 pm) at their Suite at Planet Hollywood. What night? Silly party animal…all three nights. They’ll have specifics on which suite, but if you congratulate Bonnie, you’ll be one of the first to know. She’ll, of course, contribute to the blog and when she asks for a picture for posting here, remember there’s only one rule – no nudity. Big Well! Dunne to FX, Giant O, Late Happy Hour and Bonnie.
ELLEN STONE has news of her own. She’s the newest member of the EVP Club with her promotion to EVP Marketing Bravo Media. She’s been with Bravo for seven years and they just love her there. She’s also been at Lifetime Entertainment Services as Director Consumer Marketing. Her agency background is impressive as well, including agencies Bozell Worldwide and J Walter Thompson. She’ll be NYC based. Well Dunne! Ellen.

The reason there’s an opening for a Promotion Director at Colorado Springs’ KRDO is because MIKE JACKSON has retired. And from the sounds and looks of it, he’s having a blast. Just say the word ‘golf’ and you can get the picture. Mike spent some great promo manager time at Spokane’s KHQ and Denver’s KCNC. Well Dunne! and here’s to a great retirement, Mike.
Heading to PROMAX? If you’re headed to the LA Conference, then take a good look at the picture…that’s CHAD MALLAM, who is VP of On-Air at GSN. He’s also going to be weighing in for Well Dunne! blog. So if he points his iPhone at you, smile. If you’re headed to the Station Summit, well, there’s more info to come, so stay tuned!

COZI TV, a part of ever expanding NBC offerings, has grabbed DIANE PETZKE to be the Director of Programming and Promotion for the NYC-based operation. It’s offering fave TV shows from the past as well as new programming from the NBC-owned TV stations. Diane has a very exciting background…including producing for truTV, CNBC, ABC News and NYC Media. She’s from Jersey, I do believe. Well Dunne! Diane.
Another interesting start-up cable channel is pivot, part of Participant Media’s entertainment offerings. They just released a study done on Millenials and how they watch, or don’t watch, TV, etc. Worth the time to read and click.

PETE GEORGE has traded Chicago for Pittsburgh, where he’s now the Promotion Manager of Sinclair’s duop WPMY/WPGH – Fox and MyTV respectively. Down hard against the Mississippi in Memphis, the FOX OandO has a new Creative Services Director. WAHEED ALQAWASMI has been promoted from Promo Manager. But the real story is how the go-getter got from Amman, Jordan. For 13 years, Waheed called Amman home, then his whole family made the move, which according to the distance calculator on happyzebra.com is 6,634.4 miles, or 10,677 kilometers. Now THAT is a move people. Waheed arrived speaking English with a British accent, but that soon was replaced with “ya’ll” when he went to HS. And it was in high school that he won his first Emmy. He’s been writing, producing and filming/editing documentaries and music videos, earning a nice IMDB page as well as the slot at Fox. Watch for some very good work coming under his direction. Well Dunne! Waheed.

Don’t you just love it when an up-and-coming creative takes the next step and calls all happy about a new slot? It’s great. So when LAUREL PORTIE shared that she has a fabulous new job and she starts the end of June, it was indeed a happy share. Ms. Laurel loves her old job, working with AZALIA HOELTING down San Antonio way for Fox affil KABB where she’s a writer producer and social media manager. She’ll miss the River Walk, the Texas music scene and Fiesta, but she’s very pumped to head to the Pacific Northwest where she’ll be Sr. Writer Producer for Seattle’s KIRO. THAT will be a fun road trip! She’s a Louisiana lady by birth and has worked for uber-creative DAVID HERSHEY at CBS’ KTVT in DFW. She’s also learned her craft at Greenville NC’s WNCT. Best yet, she’s going to work for SUSAN CONNOR who is heading up the KIRO creative team. Very Well Dunne! Laurel.

Well Dunne Talent’s NICK SANABRIA got a major kick out of the new book written by Richard Castle. What you say…that’s a fictional character? Indeed. And the book, actually there’s a whole series of them, is a cross media promotion…a real book written by a fictional character. Give that marketing person an award of some sort.

JACK PARMETER has passed away. I met Jack back in the LA days and hadn’t crossed paths until several months ago when he sent the most upbeat, charming email. He was looking for a new job and wanted to know what was available. His background was very impressive: He had helped launch the Fox TV Network as Director of On-Air Promotions, handling such shows as The Simpsons and 90210. He worked for Fox as Executive Director of Creative Services and traveled internationally working on original material. He made the switch to CBS where he was first VP of On-Air Promotion then Senior VP of Marketing. He was involved in Parmeter Productions where clients included ABC, Cimarron and Fox. A graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Architecture, Jack had an artists eye, a brilliant mind, a winning smile. He will be sincerely missed.
BRAD CRUM who worked with Jack, wrote the following in his honor. He has graciously allowed us to share:
"GUESS WHAT, WE ARE CONNECTED" I got this email a couple of months ago from an old friend. " Hi there…I’m an ex CBS/FOX promo/marketing guy looking for a full time job (remember me?). I figured I’d start with my Linkedin friends. Guess what? We are connected.
Hope all is well with you. Best Jack"
I got back to him but we didn’t get a chance to talk. Now, I hear of his untimely death.
If you’ll allow me, I’ve written something in honor of Jack Parmeter. But it’s really for all of us in the promo business. Because, as Jack so aptly said,
"Guess what–We are Connected".
To the tune of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime,"
Once I built a network, from the ground, took it right to the top…
Once I took another, turned it around…Brother, can you spare a job?
Once my work earned jealous stares– lined their pockets with gold
Built a reputation—but hey, who cares?! Tell me am I just too old?
Say, don’t you remember, they called me Jack;
they called me John, Lew & Bob,
Why don’t you remember, I’m your pal? Buddy, can you spare a job?
Which leads to today’s THINK ABOUT THIS: You get an email…a phone call…a FB message…a tweet…a LinkedIn message from someone in the business. You know the person, or their work, or you know of them. You know people who know them. The person reaching out doesn’t have a job at the moment, or is looking for a project. Sound familiar? Now to the heart of it….what do you do? The answer…the ONLY answer…is that you do something. You return the email…the call…answer the social media communiqué. You reach back and in doing so, you make that person feel so much better. Remind them they are not alone. They can be hopeful. In the best possible ways, you can even give them the key to a new job.

Reuniting with a former co-worker is COUNCIL BRADSHAW, who has been named the VP of Creative Services at the soon-to-be FOX duop in Charlotte, WJZY-WMYT. Council at one time was with FOX affil WGHP in the High Point market (up the road from The Queen City) where he worked with the now-GM in Charlotte. What’s he been doing in between all this? He’s been a partner in Greensboro-based DejaView Media. He’s a major-good cameraman. Well Dunne! Council.
Job Alert – Art Director WRNN Port Chester NY (NYC market)
Think About This: “To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.” ~ Arundhati Roy
Change is all around. Always has been, but there are times when it seems to rush ahead more quickly, sweeping us breathlessly along with it. Found out there’s a big change happening out west, where KLAS’ LEE MINARD has announced he’s leaving the station the end of June. He and his lovely wife (and the family cats of course) will be heading to the Arizona desert to enjoy life lived to the max and not to the time clock. Lee’s career is amazing and he’s brought his magic to such places as Food Network and stations across the country. An award-winning pro, it seems his departure from active TV will leave a hollow spot. He loves jazz, photography and art, so he’ll be busy in between sunrise and sunset. A sincere and heartfelt Well Dunne! Lee.
More change. This coming Friday is going to be extra exciting for Well Dunne!’s RICH VANSLYKE. His daughter Ali is graduating high school. The lovely young lady is going to college and study jazz saxophone performance…making her my favorite Freshman. Well Dunne! VanSlykes.
My wonderful entertainment lawyer reminds me that ya’ll need reminding that all material on this site, including the daily Well Dunne! blog is under copyright and all that it implies. OK, carry on.
Think About This: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ Steve Jobs
