She’s starting on Thanksgiving Day…it’s auspicious to pick such a memorable day to begin a new chapter. CHRISTINE VARGAS is doing just that – picking Thanksgiving, when she starts as News Promotion Manager at Tribune’s FOX affil in San Diego. I bet they’ll have pumpkin pie (at least) for her, eh? Christine is coming over from CBS affil KFMB in SD where she started as Promo Coordinator and was upped to Topical then Senior Promo Producer…shows good work and an eye that her former CSD, MIKE STEWART, had. Very excited for her. Well Dunne! Christine.
Listen up folks in the DC area. Well, more specifically one particular area, namely Gaithersburg, Maryland. Tomorrow (Tuesday Nov 7) is election day and the talented JIM MCNULTY is running for City Council. Do we need to tell you to vote? OK, then – GO VOTE. For him. The University of Scranton grad started his creative career (yes, he’s a TV creative!) at WYOU in Wilkes-Barre, PA and honed his creative promo chops in DC at WJLA, WRC and WBDC before catching on at Discovery Home/TLC and working at any number of creative leadership roles for the behemoth media co. Now he’s the owner of his own shop – Wurdsmith Creative. He’d be a super councilman! So Gaithersburgers…get out there and do the citizenship thing. Well Dunne! Jim.
Worry not…none of the WRAL promo folks were injured in the fire that broke out at their Raleigh studios on Friday night. Good news indeed.

Always such a treat to write about the artists out there. Graphics are key to any ad – duh. And in today’s world, good TV art people are hard to find. Its particularly problematic when TV loses a super-talented one to another line of work. Well, she’s still doing art but not for TV and entertainment/news. That’s what happened to a Denver-based creative, DEB CATALANO. The UCLA grad and Savannah College of Art and Design grad (impressive) was Art Director at Fox affil KDVR after doing such things as 3D animation for Fox Family Channel in LA and Imaginary Forces, Novocom and Pittard Sullivan. Yes, all top notch drop-dead great places. Deb has taken on the title of Chief Technology Officer for Ignite Creative, a super agency in the Mile High City. No doubt she’s a very happy camper. Big Well Dunne! to Deb.

Remember how there was a Job Alert for a promo position at WTIC with the fabulous HENRY VAZQUEZ? Yep, just posted yesterday. Well, it’s filled. Things move pretty quickly. Let’s introduce Team WVIT Creative’s newest member, SKYLAR MAGNOLI. She’s got what it takes to make a splash in news promo, what with her news background. She’s been a reporter for the Danbury News Times as well as an associate news producer at another Hartford station and while there, she was bitten by the promo bug. Okay then! Skylar (love that name) has interned at WNPR and was the Assistant Editor of her college paper when she attended Central Connecticut State U. A self-starter to boot. It’s illuminating to see that she is on the forefront of multimedia and social journalism. Big exciting Well Dunne! for Skylar.

Some people think 13 is an unlucky number. Not so. For instance, this upcoming November 13 is going to be a good one for ADAM DEPAUL. It’s the day he starts as Promotion Manager at WOFL/WRBW/WOGX in Orlando. He’s taken on the #2 slot behind VP/Creative Services CHRIS FRIEDRICHS and Mr. Adam will be developing and executing promotion and marketing concepts for on-air, social and online as well as overseeing and executing client commercials, community events and event-driven promotions. Cool. The Jacksonville FL native was most recently a writer producer at Hearst’s WPBF in West Palm. The Full Sail grad (and that school is am-az-ing) was also a Sr. Producer for WMOR in Tampa. Yes, that’s a Well Dunne! for Adam!

Is there anything as exhilarating as someone with a new career slot – they’re so happy and enthusiastic that it transfers and that happiness and enthusiasm makes your day? What a great way to start the week, and we have ALEXANDRIA LEAVENWORTH to thank. She’s the newly named (actually it’s a promotion) creative services producer for Hearst’s KSBW located along the gorgeous central California coast. Ms. Alex, as she calls herself shared the following: I started at KSBW in February 2015 as a part-time Master Control Operator and Production Assistant, was promoted to a full-time Production Assistant in August 2015. Then, I took a risk by dropping from full-time to part-time again, to go into my dream department as an Assistant Creative Services Producer in May 2016, and now am back to full-time in my new role as a CSP! (Whew! It’s been a journey). A go-getter with a Masters in Journalism and Mass Communications specializing in Integrated Media Communications from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Alex sounds like she can handle the biz as it spins different ways daily. She’s a delight and her CSD ED EVEREST was very happy to bring her aboard – bet the whole market loves their work. A very big Well Dunne! Alex!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN. Want to hear a frightening story? This is one about the recruiting firm that is desperate to fill a major market open CSD slot and the firm has NO idea about what marketing is, no idea about the station itself, no idea how to write (think hyperbole then magnify it for their site and emails) and they don’t coordinate their efforts. That, my pretties, is enough to make one get out one’s flying monkeys.

Los Angeles has so many amazing opportunities for creatives (most of the time)…which led ANDREW BIDWELL to return to LaLa Land to be a Digital Strategist and Associate Producer for Jukin Media. Jukin is a cutting edge licensing firm that helps user-generated video make some money. They produce original content as well. Andrew has a most interesting background…he was smart enough wear a lot of hats in different areas of entertainment before settling on promo. For instance, he interned at KNBC, NBC in San Diego and E! Networks before taking his first longer term gig doing talent relations at Oprah in LA. He then became a production assistant at E! (see how the internship worked…they remembered him and he returned) and was a PA at TMZ. After tackling news topical down in SD, his hometown, he landed back in LA. So let’s hear a big Well Dunne! for Andrew.

There’s no place like home…and with the holidays coming up, that sentiment is all the more real. And it’s the reason that MIKE STEWART is going to Kansas City as the new CSD of the Meredith CBS affil KCTV. He’ll be decamping the CSD slot in San Diego at another CBS affil KFMB. Mike and his wife are going to be way closer to family. Mike’s a grad of Kansas University (go Jayhawks) who got his start in TV at KJRH in Tulsa, where he manned the Assignment Desk before jumping to their promotion department. He then went to do promo in Houston at KPRC before heading up I-45 to be Promo Manager for DAVID HERSHEY at CBS’ KTVT. Gonna love having the seasons again and paved roads that aren’t so bumpy they’re nearly undrivable. (Yes, talking to you San Diego Street Department!). A great big Midwest Well Dunne! to Mike!

Joining the what appears to be a growing list of TV creative who are getting into the medical field is the muy talented LAUREL PORTIE. She’s been at Scripps’ The List, handling social marketing for that show as well as the Pickler & Ben syndie. Oh, she even shot and produced segments as well. Official title Social Media Strategist and Content Producer. Lots of hats on one head. She’ll be handling social media for the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, which is so close to where she lives, it’s a perk. Ms. Laurel is a Louisiana lady who started in TV at KLAX, Alexandria. Started in the promo world early. Next stop was as Sr. Writer Producer at WNCT in North Carolina then on to Big D as Brand Manager of KTVT, CBS in Dallas-Ft. Worth. She went down I-35 to San Antonio and the Sinclair stations where she jumped on the social media bus and has now gotten behind the drivers seat. She was in Seattle before heading to The List. Besides being part of the Topical Boot Camp group (more news on that to come) she’s planning a March wedding. TV is losing a gem in this busy wonderful lady. A big Well Dunne!

Listen up everybody! The one and only BOBBY RIGG is now freelancing, and you all need to not only put him in your rolodex/contacts/database/Siri thingie….but if you want great work, then you have to call and make him your production guy. He writes. He shoots. He edits. He knows how to get along with news people! Bobby has recently been Creative Manager in Houston at KHOU – yes, the station that the Buffalo Bayou flooded. During the hurricane. I’m sure you heard about it. Bobby is a Texan…Houston guy with a degree from UH to boot. He started his career in Corpus at KZTV producing promos, then headed west to KCRA in the Cali capital . He returned to Houston as Sr. Promo producer before getting the Creative Manager slot there. So, let’s repeat, hire Bobby Rigg. Carry on…and Well Dunne! Bobby.
For those of you not connected on Facebook, let me copy what was posted yesterday in the wake of the FCC’s ruling about local stations and brick and mortor locations: Wow…the FCC today eliminated the rule that meant local radio had to be, well, local. Watch for a lot of layoffs in your town…a lot of vapid and waste-of-time radio coming from elsewhere…and iHeart saving itself so the banks are happy while everyone else isn’t. Progress?

The following has nothing whatsoever to do with Harvey Weinstein. Let’s talk size. Market size. And the bottom line is, in today’s world, most people don’t really care anymore. Once upon a time the larger the market, the larger the salary. The more toys available to make spots. Largest budgets. Even more prime slots for promos. And the prestige – there was indeed a patina to the market size. Anybody read Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thom Friedman? It sums up the fact that our technology has made those editing and graphics toys available to all. Ownership consolidation has pretty much wiped out the huge market salaries (as a rule) and outside media budgets that were awesome. Today, CSDs, producers, marketing pros – most everyone is looking for an open slot that fits into THEIR lifestyle…closer to family, closer to the mountains/ocean/desert – markets that are more than just a place to live and work. Housing that might be affordable. Culture. Or solitude. Let’s refrain from thinking market size is an indication of talent. Seen spots in NYC that make you drool and seen spots from small markets that do the same. The days of market size are over…it’s all about lifestyle. Carry on.

It’s no secret that 2C Media has worked near-miracles for the people of Puerto Rico. CHRIS SLOAN and his wife CARLA KAUFMAN SLOAN are real heroes, fundraisers, do gooders…people who make a positive difference on the planet. Which brings the point that MARK S. CLARK is one lucky son-of-a-gun because Mark just got named the new Head of Development for 2C Originals, an arm of Chris and Carla’s company. Mark is a do-it-all creative who has written, edited, produced and directed more than 100 short- and long-form projects plus has been integral for promos for CNN, ABC Family, Comedy Central…you get the idea. As November officially fast approaches, let’s take a moment and round up two loose ends when it comes to creative wranglership. That, btw, is a new word – quite fetching, n’est-ce pas? Got a returnee to Scripps going into the CSD slot at their ABC affil in Las Vegas. Details to come. Let’s hear a Well Dunne! for JOHN SCHMIDT who has taken the CSD slot at WKBT, CBS in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
On an entirely different note, let’s take a quick turn to something very important. Just like Harvey Weinstein, the TV world has it fair share of sexually aggressive predators. Some of these ‘people’ are unpunished, unapologetic and still acting in ways that are unforgivable. We know who you are. We know where you work. We even own stock in your companies. So should there be any question about those who have people joining the #metoo group, your secret is no longer safe. There will be repercussions. And you will read about those repercussions right here. Why? Because it’s important. BTW, my lawyer approved this paragraph.
Think About This: “But sometimes, unexpectedly, a quiet moment finds us and we drop down into the life we have beneath all the rushing and the trying and the endless daily details, sinking into the fertile soil of the sometimes neglected inner life, where the seeds of remembering what matters are planted. What comes from that place when we give it half a chance flowers in our lives and the world, creating unexpected changes in the direction of our journey and offering unanticipated blessings to us and those around us.” ~ Oriah Mountain Dreamer

When one pivots and tries new things, great things happen. And with that in mind, let’s hear it for DAMON BRYANT, late of the VP CSD slot at Tribune’s FOX affil in Kansas City, WDAF who is now the VP GM and Director of Biz Development for Devlin Design Group. Yep, the set folks. Damon is a grad of UMKC and kicked off his TV marketing career at CBS in KC where he was On-Air Promo Manager. He transitioned with the same title to WTMJ in Miami then took the CSD slot at WXYZ in Detroit. He then took on Market #3 Chicago as Director of Advertising and Promotion at WBBM/CBS and from there went to VP of Creative Services for Fox Television Stations. He’ll be a real asset for Devlin and you should take his call when he dials you. Well Dunne! Damon!

I want not to be governed by money or clocks or any of the artificial restraints that humanity imposes on itself. I just want to be – boundless and infinite.” ~ Word Porn
Dare we call it the best TV job in the country? Yes let’s. And that job, the Creative Services Director slot at Capital Broadcasting’s WRAL in Raleigh, goes to …. Drum roll….HEATHER GRAY. The California girl will be heading east from her current slot in Phoenix at the NBC affil. Interesting background…she started as a newscast puncher after getting a degree from Cal State Chico. How cool is that. She worked directing newscasts in Sacramento before heading to Jacksonville’s Gannett operation where she got upped from newscast director to Production Manager. From there she took the job in Phoenix, official title – Director of Programming and Marketing. Her new job puts her on staff with some of the greatest folks in the biz (shout out to SHELLY LESLIE and JAY Y), and in a setting that is gorgeous and unique. What will she do with all those gorgeous trees in the Triangle after a drought of vegetation from the desert? Hopefully enjoy them all. Well Dunne! Heather.
Stephen Arnold and his music are now even more places than ever. Besides doing work with China Global Television Network, listen for their work on HLN’s Something’s Killing Me hosted by actor BD Wong. Nice work guys…Well Dunne!

It was a short week but just horrid. And now it’s Friday the 13th. Oy. Despite it all, the spirit and strength of the human race never fails to leave one breathless. The fires in California are beyond description. We are still reeling from hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Houston and all of Florida. The earthquake in Mexico City will be hampering life there for quite some time..schools are still closed, buildings are tagged to come down before they fall down… This time might be unparalleled…and yet, with no place to park in California (not kidding), with people being murdered, with greed taking the lead in the horserace of life, and with a station doing a promo about a dead baby that sounded more like a cutesy come on (shame on you and you know who you are), we still respond to the creative spark that drives us make the world prettier, funner, better. Creative people deserve far more than they’re granted. And the decision to find a creative should be made by a creative, not someone who believes in only numbers. And with that, take a gander at the jobs that are open…perhaps one is just right for your creative spark.

Was your Tuesday good? Was it? God bless ya. Some of us had the opposite kind of Tuesday, but it was made much better by some news about CBS’s MICHAEL CHARACH. His new title is now Vice President, Marketing and Affiliate Relations / Entertainment Tonight at CBS Television Distribution. Michael is aces – the newest member of the VP Club. He had been Director Marketing and Affiliate Relations / Entertainment Tonight and The Insider at the Tiffany Net. Before that, the Oakland University grad was a Producer for Storm Studios and Telepictures. Yes, he was station-side at KTTV Fox in LA doing his promo thing. This brightened the day and I know it did his as well. Join in giving him a big Well Dunne! Michael.

Always love and respect a man who understands the important things in life, and KEVIN KALVITIS is one such man. Father to two daughters (one a teen and one a pre-teen…bless his heart!) Mr. K is the new Creative Services Director for Hubbard’s NBC affil WHEC in his hometown of Rochester, NY. This time of year, Rochester is particularly gorgeous…fall colors painted on every tree leaf. He’s been lucky enough not to have to fill boxes and move, so you know he must be happy (and lucky in this biz…) A grad of the noted media department at Syracuse University, Kevin hit the ground running in the marketing and promo area at Hubbard’s WHEC, where he now returns. He began doing writing and producing and was named Director of Marketing and Promotion. He then went over to WHAM, the ABC station in the market to head up their creative efforts before doing his creative thing (with many aspects and titles) for Mason Marketing. He’s now back ‘home’ and enjoying life and the challenge of a new opportunity. Well Dunne! Kevin.

It’s a Two-fer Friday. Two new CSD announcements, all focusing at one place. Like the chess game that TV marketing sometimes becomes, which isn’t really a bad thing for change to fall into place like dominoes . Fresh ideas, fresh energy always energizes any slot at any company; all the more for creatives. So let’s start out with the newest member of the CSD brigade, NATE TODD. Nate’s the new creative leader at Hearst’s WTVM in Birmingham, Alabama. Nate’s promotion is well deserved; he’s been the Assistant CSD at the NBC affil, so he’s all ready to roll. A grad of University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Nate’s first TV job was as a Topical Producer for WCCB FOX in Charlotte. He then headed a bit north to Winston-Salem’s WXII where he was ASD before heading to Birmingham. A big Well Dunne! to Nate.
Meanwhile, his former boss JASON HOLLOWAY is headed to Hearst in Kansas City, KMBC, where he’ll wrangle the CSD department. Jason began his broadcast career in Abilene, Texas and then headed to KTUL in Tulsa doing Special Projects. He took on the promo world at KMOV in St. Louis (horray hometown and Cardinals!) as Promotion Manager, Special Projects Producer and Photog. The man can do it all! He then went on to Boston’s WCVB as Assistant CSD under RUSS NELLIGAN before getting his first CSD slot in B’ham. Big Well Dunne Jason!

While we are assailed yet again by massive, senseless violence…the desire to run away to Magical Thinking World is so strong and so enticing, it seems the only rational decision in light of the pain and exhaustion of emotions which Real World grips us. Some of us ate desert for dinner in hopes the sugar high would please (which it always does) as well as numb a crass Monday. But the creatives on the planet can’t do that. It’s only going to be the thoughts, ideas and illuminations of the creatives that will solve things…find ways to make life better…lighten the burdens. So keep your ideas sharp…we need them more than ever.

Turning this over to KPRC Promotion Manager MARIAH GARDNER, who is one of the best writers in the biz…she writes about the CW in August, GA: A few days ago, we found out my friend and former co-worker, BRENT HLAVATY, passed away after a prolonged illness. This picture is how I remember him, a strong towering pillar of a man who smiled with his eyes and who really loved making people happy. Brent had a lot of big ideas. I rolled my eyes more times than I can count at this master showman, but he always came through with concepts that made his viewers and his clients happy. One of his favorite things to do was to make food for his co-workers, clients and friends…and man, was he good at it. He enjoyed trying out vegetarian recipes on me (or as he called it, “veggin”) and they were always home runs. I will really, really miss him. Please keep his wife, son and teenage daughter in your thoughts and prayers. After I moved to Houston, I communicated with Brent a few times through LinkedIn (he wasn’t a Facebook kind of guy). One of his last messages to me just happens to be a great bit of advice. After reminding me that he very wisely predicted I’d meet a great guy when I moved to Houston (he was very sure of it), Brent said, “Take care of yourself, and live life to its fullest.” And that is advice I’m happy to take in his honor. Goodbye for now, dear friend.

The Lion King explains it all. It’s a circle of life. Back in the early days of TV, Ben Casey started with a simple chalkboard graphic of man, woman, birth, death, infinity. That’s it. All the rest are details. All the changes, the heartbreak, the love and tears…all the saying goodbye and saying hello, starting fresh and going into pre-programmed mode. It’s all the circle of life. This blog (someone get a new name puhLEASE) is about that, and you need to know that you are thanked, valued and even cherished for any time and or attention spent here.
Now a few quick catch-ups: Well Dunne! to RILEY SEXTON who traded her Manager, Platform and Affiliate Marketing slot for Associate Director of Affiliate Marketing for Fox Broadcasting Company in LA. The SMU grad did some great stuff for KMSP in Minneapolis before heading west.
Condolences to Well Dunne! Talent’s DENA YASNER and her significant other LOREN. Loren’s mother passed this week. Loren is the kind of son we all hope our sons will be.
GM CURTIS MILES at WAOW in Wausau has a new CSD, namely KRISTI SCHREIBER, a native Wausan (is that correct…Wausan?) who is totally slammed with the new job. But Well Dunne! Kristi.
Think About This: “Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better
and happier. Be a loving expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. To children, to the poor, to all who suffer and are lonely, give always a happy smile. Give them not only your care, but your heart.” ~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta
