G’day Mate. Yes, an Ozzie greeting to kick off an Ozzie getting a fab new slot. The man from Down Under is none other than TIM RC. ANDERSON who took the Creative Director slot for CBS Corp out in LA, which is closer to home than his New York-based former job as Creative Director of NBCUniversal Media. Tim got his creative career launched scheduling on-air promos for Foxtel in Sydney before trying his hand at writing and producing said promos for them. He then went to Seven Network before coming to the states to work in LA for the Entertainment Marketing folks at NBCU. Warner Bros was his next stop where he was Exec CD for Worldwide TV Marketing. The lure of New York called him east and he freelanced and threw his hand into NBCU’s efforts once again. Krikey! That’s great. Big Well Dunne! Tim RC.

BJ comes to marketing from the news side of the fence, having worked as News Director, EP, Producer and Anchor for stations in NYC, Philly, Cleveland and San Francisco. It’s summer. It’s hot. And there are reruns. Sometimes it seems reruns are more ubiquitous because there are life events that just keep happening and then they get shared. We have yet another wonderful creative who is making a step on his TV marketing career, this time up in Utica where THOMAS LINDSAY has joined WUTR/WFXV, the Nexstar owned ABC/Fox duop. Thomas has a degree in Broadcasting and Screen Arts from SUNY. For those non-New Yorkers SUNY – Oswego is State University New York in, yep, Oswego. And was he busy there…not letting an opportunity go by. He got hands-on experience at the school’s TV channel, WTOP in a number of roles and ended up VP of Productions. That’s terrific! You should see the list of apps and programs Thomas knows…impressive. Let’s welcome him and say Well Dunne!

How delightful to write about one of the best. Talkin’ about JIM THOMAS, who is going to start next week wrangling the creative at Tribune’s KDVR/KWGN in Denver. It’s Fox/CW respectively. Jim has been running his own consulting since he left Magid where he handled marketing for their client stations, and did a marvelous job of it, being a marketing pro and not a newsie who believes they know marketing. Jim is a Penn State grad who has a ton of experience particularly with the Journal Broadcast Group, which blended with Scripps. He held the title of VP Marketing New Media and Programming and even was an interim GM for them at one time. The man is as creative as he is solid. Great choice for Denver. A personal Well Dunne! Jim – to you my friend.
Meanwhile, an ad that got rejected from the WDT blog job posting wants someone who can: do all news graphics for in show and marketing, shoot, write and produce image and topicals, do community outreach events and spots, create spots for advertisers, do the daily logs and post on social media through the day plus, my favorite – receive constructive criticism. And we wonder why it’s hard to fill open marketing slots.

The first steps of a journey of a thousand miles are so exciting. Unsullied enthusiasm mixed with fresh new energy. And lately, in the world of TV and entertainment marketing, it’s a rarity. So glad to discover it in the form of the new Creative Services Director of CBS affil WTVY in Dothan, Alabama – ADAM MCCULLEN. The Florida panhandle native sounds eager and has super ideas in mind to help make his station better, and it’s a sure bet he will. Like many, he began as a Master Control Operator who had a background in video production. When the opening came about, he was able to make the switch. So let’s all be supportive and give Adam a warm and sincere Well Dunne!

Ever go through a phase when, after what seems ages, you suddenly find yourself seeing something over and over? Running into people over and over. Such is the case with Missouri. The last week has been a Missouri fest, and that leads us to MIKE LEBOLT, a fine Missouri man who has news to share. Mike hails from Springfield (aka Brad Pitt’s hometown) and went to Missouri State U (which at one time was called Southwest Missouri State) and Mizzou. Just yesterday he joined Megatrax Music as an Director of Corporate AV – and it’s right up his alley. Mike had been over at FirstCom Music, so he’ll still be based in Dallas. Along the way, Mike has worked at Tiffany’s…which is very interesting imho. Mike’s a sweetie with the nicest smile. I guess we should sing “Well Dunne! Mike”. Big thanks to CHAD HUFFMAN.
Speaking of favorites, DREW FOWLER falls into that category. Drew has been heading up the creative at Sacramento’s ABC affil KXTV and the work he’s been doing is beyond terrific. Perhaps the very best in the country, and I see a LOT of work. Well, he’s not going to move and leave his swimming pool but he is changing jobs. Friday’s his last day at KXTV and from there he goes over to CBS’ KOVR. Actually, he is returning to KOVR…he was heading up their marketing and promo from ’05 to ’12. Gotta love hearing KOVR recognizes talent. A big Well Dunne! Drew.
Anybody remember who passed out the mushrooms that have made us all crazy? Yes, I’m referencing the abrupt about-face the FCC pulled on Sinclair. Can’t WAIT for all the details to finally be shared. So no…nobody knows anything about Sinclair, Tribune or almost anything from moment to moment. You’re not alone…we’re all just watching the circus of TV ownership.

Nothing like Michigan in the summer. Spent most every August in the Kalamazoo area as well as on the shore of Lake Michigan. You really need to do that if you want to relax, stay cool and generally recharge. One of my all time favorite News Directors was in Grand Rapids, just north of The Zoo….and GR is where our spotlight shines today. JASON NICHOLS is the new on-air Promo Manager for the Tribune FOX affil, WXMI. It’s a promotion from Art Director and that means those spots are gonna have the patina of style Art Directors are noted for. Grand Rapids has quite the sculptor collection, btw, with Henry Moore and Ai Weiwei on display. Jason is working with CSD KURTIS KAECHELE. Well Dunne Jason!

It’s always so lovely to hear news from the ol’ hometown. And it’s even better when the news has a double nice ring on a day that everything else seems beyond insane. KSDK is a St. Louis powerhouse. The NBC affil has a new Promotion Manager and he’s from the same town where my Dad was born. And, to put the cherry on the ice cream sundae, the new job is a result of a promotion. DOUG HOWELL is the man in question and he’s super. The Indiana native holds a degree from Indiana State and his first job in TV was over in Terra Haute at WTWO and then as a Director at WTHI. Made the jump to KPLR in St Louis where he TD’d before going over to Market Street and KSDK. As if TV doesn’t keep him busy enough, Doug is an amazing photog who runs his own sideline called Doug Howell Photography. Gorgeous work. Let’s hear a big St. Louis Well Dunne! for Doug.
Big news day today / yesterday, understatement being a hallmark of this particular writing style. The TV bombshell was the FCC chairman’s announcement that the Sinclair-Tribune deal is in trouble, if not about to expire. Been around a long time and never has there been so much craziness. So no, it’s not just you who keeps shaking their head and wondering what is coming up next. I don’t think anybody knows, even if they have a crystal ball. Deep breaths people. Could the lesson here be that paperwork is way more important than you think? As the Irish say, we live in interesting times.

Up in Utica, NY, a lovely young lady has gotten her first full time job in TV. Remember yours….how you felt? I bet that’s still the same feeling of excitement, accomplishment, and eagerness. ASHLEY ROGERS is the new writer producer for CSD TERRY KOWALSKI at the Nexstar ABC/FOX operation, WUTR/WFXV. She had been doing some part time work and got the bump to fulltime because of her good work and excellent outlook. Let’s turn this over to Ashley to fill us in: I have finished my Associate degree at Herkimer County Community College for Photographic Technology and completed my Bachelor of Technology for Electronic Marketing & Publishing at Morrisville State College. After College I plan to find a career that will be able to put to use with my degree, knowledge, creativity, and skills. I am particularly interested in finding a career as an Animator, Graphic Design, Video Production or Web Development/Design. My dream is to go beyond what I can image and what I could ever have hoped for. What do you do when the following happens: 1 – your dad has health problems and 2 – you see an opening that is a step up from your current slot career-wise. You go for it, of course. Proximity to family, especially when all is not well, is job 1, as Ford used to say. JORDANA HOUCHINS added 1 and 2 and is heading to Phoenix from her plum slot on David Hershey’s KTVT creative marketing team. She’ll be headed to the Valley of the Sun towards the end of the month to take the Creative Brand Manager slot at TEGNA’s KPNX, NBC. She learned promo at KING in Settle and WCCB in Charlotte before heading out to LA where she did creative for KTLA, KABC, and KNBC as well as a stint working for Queen Latifah. She’ll be loving Phoenix, but she better eat all the TexMex she can before going out – Phoenix does not have very good (if at all) TexMex (alert the Chamber of Commerce!). Well Dunne! Jordana!
Speaking of Dallas, however did we miss sending out a big Well Dunne! to HOLLY ROMERO back in the early spring when she took over as for Dallas’ KDAF, the CW in Big D. Holly came down to Texas from being Assistant Creative Services Director of Hearst’s WISN in Milwaukee. The Tucson native has a degree from University of Arizona and has worked doing marketing for KOLD in her hometown as well as WTNZ in Knoxville. A belated but enthusiastic Well Dunne! Holly.

Smart move in Houston. Naming ART SOBARZO to be Vice President of Audience Development for ABC’s O&O KTRK. Art has been Director of Creative Services at Telemundo up in Dallas. In more and more markets, Spanish language news is beating out or giving traditional newscasts a run for the money. Art will be able to blend the two. He’s also worked for Telemundo in Houston, KTMD. He’s a grad of Texas A&M, making him an Aggie. Texans get it. Let’s give Art a big Well Dunne!

BRETT KENYON is the new Creative Services Director in Mississippi’s capital, Jackson. WAPT is the station and it’s a ABC affil owned by Hearst. He makes the transition from ‘across the street’ at WJTV, where he had the same title. He had worked as two different leadership roles while at the CBS affil – Community Outreach Director and National Sales Assistant. He’s a man who knows how to use words…one of his first jobs was as a Creative Writer for Mad Genius agency. Let’s hear a very happy Well Dunne! Brett.

The world of TV creative is losing two – and the TV world is the worst for it. Talent and leadership the industry is in dire need of. First, we’ve got Chicago’s JAY WADHWA. He’s helping bring a new golf concept to life. Called Swing, it’s a network of next-gen entertainment venues that includes gaming. Sounds way above par, excuse the bad golf pun. The Boston U grad brought his amazing TV marketing talents to screen for ESPN as well as NBC in Chicago, as both Promo Manager and Manager Brand Marketing Creative Services for WBBM then as Senior Director Marketing Creative Services for NBC Sports Chicago. Over in DC, STEVE HOUK has landed a plum as Senior Digital Video Producer for Fannie Mae. That’s right, no packing and moving. Steve is another BU grad who has marketed and produced for radio and TV, particularly noted is his heading up creative for WTTG and WUSA. That’s Steve in the picture…on stage with his band. Thrilled for them both, but sorry the TV world is missing out on such experience. Well Dunne! Jay and Steve.

How lovely to share the news that MARY RICE is the new creative honcho at Salt Lake City’s KSTU, the FOX affil. Mary, who is no relation to John Rice, has an impressive background in PR and comes to the Tribune owned (at the moment) station from Harmon’s Grocery where she was Sr. PR Manager. She also held a Sr. PR slot for Penna Powers. Mary has been a newsroom person, being Assignment Manager at KTVX and KUTV and KSL, all SLC. Well Dunne, Mary!
Which brings us to a comment on the recent Station Summit. More than one person…quite a few more actually if we want to be precise…commented on the dwindling number of women who were in attendance. Which logically leads to the question of why there are fewer women in creative leadership positions in local TV. Why would that be? Buehler….Buehler…? More to come.

Smiling a million mega watt smile lights up the world. That’s what DEBBIE BAYLES KIESLING had…a million mega watt smile and a kind and open heart. It was the kind of smile that made you smile back…no matter what kind of day you were having or what was vexing your soul, you saw that smile and things were better. How she did it leaves one in awe. How she smiled when they told her she needed a new heart or she would die….how she smiled when they put her under to replace that heart, no doubt used up in gentle ways…how she smiled despite all the pain of recovering, and relapsing, and relapsing … and relapsing…smiled with a trach and tubes and wires. Smiled that smile that made doctors, nurses, helpers, her daughters and cherished husband MARK KIESLING forget for a second that she was battling more than most of us ever will face. Smiled in pain. Smiled because she felt the many angels that surrounded her and wrapped her in their wings. For seven months, that smile never faded, but her body did. Debbie passed away Monday…leaving the world darker for lack of her smile, and harsher for lack of her kind heart. Please send WSIL TV Anchorman MARK and his family and the myriad of friends who loved her…please send them your thoughts. And for Debbie, smile today. The world needs to be brighter.

While many of you are gathering swag in Vegas, nobody is going to bring back a better cherished treat than Memphis’ MIKE CUNNINGHAM. He and his lady love did the Vegas thing – they got married. Yes Elvis was involved at some point and it was a happy, fun wedding. He and the new Mrs. Cunningham are the best..and we’ll be sending them happiness and a Well Dunne! Mike is CSD at the Nexstar operation in the city known for Graceland.

PromaxBDA 2018 Reflections

Not sure why but the final day of PromaxBDA always feels a bit more focused compared to the previous two. Maybe it’s because most of the sales and business development folks have all headed back to the office, (or sleeping off the cumulative effects of the previous night’s party-hopping). Whatever the reason the net result usually is a final day of sessions that seems to attract the proverbial best-and-brightest who are looking to engage in a deeper conversation about what’s going on in our industry, good and bad, and discuss openly the challenges we face in our ever evolving world of content marketing, promotion and design.
That spirit was on display at sessions like “How To Build An Interactive Cult,” which took a deep dive into FX’s innovative awareness campaign leading up season 7 of American Horror Story, FX’s Stephanie Gibbons, Sally Daws and Jason Phipps shared the stage with agency Spark+Sizzle’s Cyndy Cecil-Bragg and Crystal Hall. Not on the stage but shouted out to was director Ian Karr of IKA Collective, New York.
Also worth noting was Tom Goodwin’s TV: RIP keynote, which challenged the notion that TV as a medium is dead, but instead to rethink the notion of TV itself and how to market via it. And of course State Of Our Art, gave everyone a glimpse at the extraordinary creative happening globally.
Following a lifetime achievement award to longtime BET Networks Chairman and CEO Debra Lee, and of course a guitar giveaway via Stephen Arnold Music, Dallas, where Hugo Creative’s Creative Director/Managing Principal Matt Guastaferro was hoping to take home psychedelic Gibson SG the leaders in sonic branding were raffling off this year (Sorry Matt, the lucky winner was Kent Devoll, Director, Promotions, Strategy & Scheduling at insp, Indian Land, SC), it was time to give away some glitzy gold statues.
Hosted by actor/comic Tone Bell, who is starring in new CBS comedy “Fam” this fall with Nina Dobrev, and also starred in Netflix’s “Disjointed” with Kathy Bates and NBC’s “Whitney” with Whitney Cummings, the 2018 PromaxBDA Promotion, Marketing and Design Awards honored FX Networks with North America Marketing Team of the Year for the eighth consecutive year, while CNN Worldwide won Global Excellence Marketing Team of the Year. Additionally, P+A was awarded North America Agency of the Year for work done on FX‘s
“American Horror Story: Cult” and Hulu‘s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” while Stun was honored as Global Excellence agency of the year. Full list of winners can be found here.
One of the more emotional moments of the evening came when CNN won for Brand Integration campaign for ”Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain.”
Outside in the lobby my old friends Michael Waldron, SVP Creative Dir. – Brand Design, Nickelodeon; and David Herbruck, President/Partner of creative agency Loyalkaspar, celebrated their wins (Waldron’s team at Nickelodeon won Gold for their Kids Choice Awards 2017 Program Campaign and the 2017 Nick Refresh; while Loyalkaspar took home multiple Silver’s for their Syfy rebrand).
Heading out toward the escalators that would deposit me back onto 6th Ave and a cool-nearly summer evening, I couldn’t help but contemplate the role the PromaxBDA and its members can play in speaking truth to power. Two years ago the Trump Presidency began in the very room where tonight CNN – the network most derided by Trump — took home the night’s biggest honors. Throughout the week there was undeniable sense of mission among many of the creatives I met not just to do great work, but make great work that matters. Hopefully that renewed sense of purpose will inspire those in attendance to create the needle-moving work we’ll be talking about next year. ###

Anybody watch the premiere of Yellowstone with Kevin Costner on the Paramount Network? BEAR MENOR, the most handsome and talented young actor is in it. That’s a shout out and a tease at the same time…see how that happened? Anyone needing a young man with a natural read, well he doe that too.

ANDREW BIDWELL slogged through doing Topicals in San Diego before getting back to the fun of entertainment marketing and production. He left SD for Jukin Media, owned by Ellen btw, where he went back to his lovely LA and was a producer. Now, starting pretty son, Mr. Andrew is going to be part of the RuPaul ‘s Drag Race. The UCLA grad has worked in some pretty sweet sounding places, like E! Networks where he was a Digital Producer and doing talent relations for Oprah. The one and only RAY ECKE, who is a PR man deluxe and writes so well, he writes for us. This is his take on the first two days of PROMAX NYC. You know, Big Kids PROAX. So thrilled he was able to catch up with CHRIS SLOAN and MIKE BENSON.
PromaxBDA 2018: New York – Reporter’s Notebook

“Man that is a long line,” said one PromaxBDA attendee as the escalator delivered him to the 2nd floor of the New York Hilton and greeted him with a registration line that snaked seemingly the length of an entire city block.
Yes, lines suck, but the sessions and all around good vibes present here would made it all worth the wait.
Scott Rogowsky, the comic and host and creator of the groundbreaking mobile app game show HQ Trivia, began day one with a quick game of trivia and joked about how the Grand Ballroom here also the site of the Trump campaign’s victory party in 2016 and that we had to work hard to exercise those demons.
From there he introduced Dawn Ostroff, President of Conde Nast Entertainment for an in-depth talk about the state of the TV in the age OTTs like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu growing in dominance. She noted that while content is “queen” that good content not only makes an impact but also is memorable as evidenced by Architectural Digest Open House video series featuring DJ/Producer Zedd that not only got 14 million views but informal market research (she asked her kids) they not saw it but registered the magazine brand behind it.
From there, Ad Age Magazine’s media reporter Jeanine Poggi interviewed Angela Courtin, Global Head of Marketing, YouTube & Originals, followed by Mike Benson, Head of Marketing, Amazon Studios.
Benson, a former marketing executive for ABC, noted how interesting it was for him to be in the audience for the recent Upfronts as a media buyer rather than on stage presenting. “Linear TV still works,” Benson said noting that Amazon bought a Super Bowl ad for the first time to promote the upcoming series Jack Ryan, “but we need to figure out how to better use it.”
The highlight of the day was the conversation with actress Laura Dern and Me Too movement founder Tarana Burke, moderated by ABC’s 20/20 co-anchor Amy Robach.
“We slowly shift culture by shifting our narrative,” said Me Too founder Tarana Burke. “Entertainment industry folks are at the forefront of that.”
“It’s a much larger issue that we all need to consider for the next generation,” Dern added.
Second day of PromaxBDA is always my favorite: everyone is settled in and acclimating to the pace, which for sessions at Promax this year has taken on more of a TED-like vibe with 3 mini sessions totaling 90 minutes wrapped under a unifying theme. Plus, Wednesday is always party night for attendees, with shindigs hosted by numerous Promax mainstays such as Stephen Arnold Music, Videohelper and IKA Collective.
One of the more effecting sessions was “Be The Change: Using Your Platform For Social Good” that featured Chris Sloan, Owner/President of 2C Creative; Lara Richardson, Group EVP, Discovery and Science Channel; and Kim Rosenbaum, EVP, Marketing and Chief Creative Officer, Nickelodeon Group.
Sloan, who is also Co-founder of Caleb & Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation, the non-profit he founded to honor his late son whose fundraisers and community outreach efforts have benefitted Lehrman Community Day School, Miami Children’s Museum, Centro Mater Child Care Services, #HashtagLunchBag, Operation Puerto Rico Care-Lift, Operation Puerto Rico Gift-Lift and others. Sloan highlighted the work the organization did bringing meals to Puerto Rico’s hurricane victim.
He’s also supporting Operation Backpack, which under the guidance of Rachel Weinstein, VP, Communications & External Relations, was enlisting help from PromaxBDA attendees to fill backpacks with school supplies for thousands of New York City’s homeless children. Weinstein told me she was deeply affected when she noticed many New York City school kids were heading to school without a backpack because they couldn’t afford one, or the school supplies to go inside it. Of course one of the must-see’s was Lee Hunt’s Best Practice’s 2018, which focused media consolidation and the continued trend toward network’s creating their OTT apps and how their promo breaks directed viewers toward these emerging viewing platforms. As for the parties, Stephen Arnold Music’s rooftop soiree was a lot of fun with the music company of course giving away one of its prized guitars. Hanging out was Grammy-winning engineer Juan Cristobal Losada, whose credits include Santana, Jon Secada and Shakira among many others.

This is a particularly happy post. Happy for GABRIEL LUNA (aka Gabe) who is going to get his first CSD slot. Gabe is a doll…a wonderful family man as well as a very talented promo pro. He’s headed to Tulsa to be CSD for Scripps’ NBC affil KJRH. Starts on or about July 2, which means he has to juggle PROMAX, moving, 4th of July holidays – ouch. You get the idea. He’ll be good with it all. He’s been Promotion Manager for Scripps KGUN in historic Tucson. Gabe’s a San Antonian (GREAT town!) who wrote and produced promos as well as did graphics for WOAI. He then went out to Seattle’s KIRO to hone his craft. Very excited that he’s been given the chance (well deserved) to CSD. OK, 1 – 2 – 3…Well Dunne! Gabe!
