Retirement. It used to be word that conjured up icons of rocking chairs, fishing poles, and eating dinner at 4 in the afternoon. No more. Not even close. Retirement now is like the curtain coming down on one act of a play, then going right back up for the next one. F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that there are no second acts to American lives. He would not write that today. All this is prelude to announcing that SAM JONES is going to retire from his promo job at KMBC in KC. Sam’s been Sr. Writer Producer at the Hearst ABC affil as well as doing promo as Sr. Producer at WITI, Fox in Milwaukee. Down in Shreveport at KSLA, he produced commercials. Sam, let us know what Act 2 will be – we’re all ready to applaud. No matter what, enjoy! Well Dunne! Sam.
If this looks odd. please forgive. Gremlins are in the Macs tonight and I just don’t have the energy to fix it right now…. 😉

Topographically, the US is incredibly diverse. From the deserts of the Southwest to forests of the Pacific Northwest….the grassy plains of the Midwest to the Southeast lowlands and the vibe of the east coast – it’s all different and exciting. Creative people love making the switch from one place to another, and HENRY VASQUEZ is one such soul. He’ll be heading back to the east coast, where the New Yorker calls home, as the new Vice President Director of Brand and Digital Development at Tribune’s WTIC, the CBS affiliate in Hartford. Henry is going to cash in his chips, so to speak, as CSD of Nexstar’s KLAS in Las Vegas. For the last several years, Henry and his lovely wife have been bi-coastal and they’re looking forward to more time together. Henry actually began his career at Tribune as Creative Services Assistant in NYC at WPIX. Down in Philly he was Promo Manager for WCAU as well as promo producer for KYW, WPVI and WCAU. Yep he ran the Philly promo table. Mr. V has an MBA and now a very impressive new business card. Hope he plays a hot slot before heading out…he’s on a great streak. Well Dunne! Henry.

Kudos to Gray Television for elevating SHANNON BOOTH (BIEBERDORF) to GM at their Lincoln, Nebraska property, KOLN, CBS in the state capital and KNOP/KNPL/KIIT in North Platte. She’s more than prepared to wow them all…she’s been the Director of Brand Marketing and Creative Services Director for Cedar Rapids’ KCRG, NBC. As a matter of fact, the Iowa State grad has held several titles with the station and the newspaper, The Gazette, including Director of KCRG Products and Director of Broadcast Products. Now she’s taking I-80 west for the five hour drive to her new assignment. Way to go! Again, let’s restate that the marketing pros are far better choices to manage a station than most sales types (sorry sales folks…truth is truth but we love you anyway). Well Dunne! Shannon!
All the American marketing types who are in London checked in as OK yesterday after the violence at Parliament. Amazing that seems rather normal…as shocking as that is in itself…

Imagine waking up every morning and being happy…really happy…to go to work. And once you get to your office, you are using your talents to make a real difference to the world. That’s the new path for MAIA BRUSSEAU. You probably know her for being the CSD at Tribune’s KDVR in Denver. She’s split her time between Central Florida and the Rocky Mountains (best of both worlds) and has studied at both University of Central Florida and University of Northern Colorado. She’s done promo for WKMG, CBS in the Big O as well as for KCNC in Denver. She’ll be splitting her time again, not geographically, with her new job, as PR Manager for Denver-based Dumb Friends League. She’ll help dogs and horses find new forever homes. Excellent. Really truly excellent. TV’s loss is a gain for animals. Well Dunne! Maia.

Anybody else into gardening? Growing plants and flowers…and veggies. Planting and watering and watching greenery grow. And when a particular plant begins to falter, it’s no doubt root bound and needs a new, larger pot in which to continue to bloom. People are much like plants. We need to repot ourselves when we become root bound…we need to choose to follow a new path. CHRISTINE BARON FUNK (let’s call her CHRISSY from now on) is literally taking a new path…she’s going to walk the Appalachian Trail, which if you aren’t aware of what a grueling challenge that is, you need to Google it now. The brave blonde has said adieu to her CSD slot at Scripps’ WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL so she can take the hike of a lifetime, from Georgia to Maine. All 2,200 miles of it. TV will miss her terribly, but the energy, resolve, bravery and spunk (thanks Lou Grant) Chrissy has is absolutely awesome. Well Dunne! Chrissy. Can’t wait to see all the vistas you encounter.

It’s St. Pats, as you know. On this day in 461, the man known as St. Patrick (he was never formally canonized) died. Contrary to legend, he did not drive the snakes out of Ireland, although there are no snakes in Ireland and driving snakes out of any area is definitely grounds for being a saint. Celebrate accordingly.
What do you do after work…if there is anything now considered ‘after work’? One very smart, energetic creative has started her own side business and, as an added bonus, she’s written an e-book about marketing. Makes you feel a little like a slacker, doesn’t it. Don’t let it get to you…but do request a copy of LAUREL PORTIE’s book entitled Instagram Empire: Copy My 3 Step Strategy to Make Your First 1k Online. Laurel’s day job is Social Media Strategist/Content Producer for Scripps’ syndie show The List. When the factory whistle blows, she puts her Boss hat on and has set up an online business selling shirts for ladies who like to bicycle. There was a need…she filled it and that’s marketing as you know. Hand in hand with the tee-shirt biz came the book. Being a social media maven, it was a natural. Ms. Laurel calls Louisiana home and has done promo for KTVT in Dallas as well as KABB in San Antonio. Drop her a line, ask for the book (it’s FREE…yes F-R-E-E) or go to here ….and don’t forget to tell her Well Dunne! Laurel.

Giggling because it’s soooo Well Dunn….who is the new CSD at Sarasota’s WWSB, ABC in America’s Riviera? None other than JOSEPH DUNN. Love it! And the coincidences don’t end there. He’s making the switch from Charlotte (!) where he was Digital Marketing Manager for ROBBY THOMAS’ hot WBTV shop there in the Queen City. He was promoted to that slot having been a writer producer – all while earning an MBA from UNC-Charlotte. Impressive. Mr. D picked up the promo trade from WSPA in the Greenville-Spartanburg market of upstate South Carolina. WSPA is about to become Raycom (if it hasn’t already) so Joseph is transferring within the company for this exciting new position. You are going to love Sarasota, Joseph. See you soon and Well Dunne!
Let’s face it…business isn’t anything at all like business was five years ago. Boy have things changed. With that in mind, here’s to the new Life After TV section of the WDTB (Well Dunne! Talent blog) which will be about people who used to do network/cable/station marketing on a daily basis but have taken those talents and moved on. Yes, the many talents, skills and ideas that you use daily (hourly actually) have tremendous value outside the narrow confines of the business as it has morphed today. Tremendous value. More about the basis for that in just short order, but let’s shine our light on our first LATV (Life After TV) person today: KEVIN KOLBE. Kevin is an amazing man…faithful, father deluxe and creative as can be. When WRAL had a shakeup in their department, Kevin found himself (for the first time since high school) looking for work. He had headed up marketing for FOX there, another Capital property. So what does a highly creative man do? Use those skills. And he’s using them to document his search for his next step. It’s a vlog and you should YouTube it and sign up to watch them all. Bet you identify with him…and for heavens sake, let’s find him something that moves the planet forward. He deserved the best. Well Dunne! Kevin

So many people written about here on the Well Dunne! blog are Promo Cowboys, the name BARRY FITZSIMMONS tabbed for creatives who switch markets in order to spin their marketing magic. Every now and then, there’s a very notable exception to that rule. Someone who grabs the golden ring and finds a great job with the right people; matching ideas about how business should be. One of those golden ring people is SHELLY SMITH LESLIE, who, come this June 2, will celebrate 30 years with Capital Broadcasting Company, the owners of WRAL in Raleigh. For the last 25 years, Shelly has been part and then leader of the people who make WRAL one of the most successful stations in the country – the marketing folks. And now, in honor of the success and longevity Shelly has achieved, she will be stepping up to a new title and new duties – General Manager of Audience Development. It’s a new division for Capital, one in which Shelly will be identifying new audiences for new platforms, expanding their video digital footprint and, of course, putting some green in the bank. VERY exciting. I talk to nearly everybody over the course of a year, and Shelly has the unique distinction of being the happiest person in the biz. The first time we talked, that’s the impression she left…lucky and a lady who, indeed, got the gold ring. It’s been a very good couple of months for the avid bicycler. This is the cherry on the whipped cream on the cupcake called Capital. The biggest Well Dunne! coming to you Shelly.

When it comes to living in the most exciting, ideal US markets, KELLY DONNELL wins. And a talented one. A great big Rocky Mountain Well Dunne! Kelly
Remember last December when B&C named Cleveland’s MICKI BYRNES the GM of the year? Well, Ms. Micki did it again and nabbed the GM of the year for the Tegna chain. He’s packing up in Pittsburgh and heading to New York, where a new job and his children await. Doesn’t get better…you can hear it in his voice. Terry’s headed to Utica, where he’ll be CSD the Nexstar’s ABC/FOX operation WUTR/WFXV. Terry’s been in TV and loves it almost as much as PETE BARRETT. The two of them would never stop talking TV if they sit together. While he’s been looing around, Terry studied and got his Masters in Public Relations from Kent State U. It all boils down to family, doesn’t it. It really does. He loves ice hockey, snow mobiling and all other kinds of sports that he can enjoy with the boys. I’m sure you join me in saying Well Dunne! It would be nice if you could read this when things are quiet. When you’re alone and other people’s energy isn’t bumping into yours. When you are at peace and feel connected with the love that flows through the world. Read it on a monitor instead of your cell phone, so each word has the actual space it needs to make its meaning felt. That would be nice. Because it’s about the loss of another creative light in the world. If you were lucky, you got to see the photos that PATRICK BALDWIN took. He had ‘an eye’ and his subjects always shared their truth with the viewer. That trait no doubt was the driving force in his work doing TV promo for Hearst. He was in Boston and Milwaukee at their operations. Patrick was a Midwest guy…who went to college at SIU-Carbondale. Handsome and talented, he was known to give people a chance – their first ‘break’. He had many friends because he was always encouraging and interested – known for sending a kind word when most needed. He had been living out in Northern Cali and passed away at his home there. Like so many, his world had recently been impacted by uncontrollable events. His reaction was simple and wise: pray. Please say a prayer for Patrick. What a sight it would be if he could share his pictures of angels, who are no doubt lining up, with their prettiest halos, waiting to have him capture their smiles. Peace.

Remember reading about people going from shore to mountains…well, here is the second example, and a handsome one at that. BYRON PFORDTE has traded Myrtle Beach on the Atlantic for Boise’s foothills, which are foothills to the Rocky Mountains so they’re drawn with a broad brush. Gorgeous. And that air he’s breathing…clean. He’s a southern man who is giving the west a go, heading up the creative at Sinclair’s CBS/CW duop KBOI/KYUU. He started out in front of the camera as a reporter at WEAR in Pensacola before producing commercials and directing at WXLV in Winston-Salem. He got into web development in that area before being named Art Director back at WXLV. Their GM must be a peach. He headed down to Greenville, SC (not to be confused with Greensboro NC or Greenville NC…whew!) to write and produce promos for FOX Carolina before taking the CSD slot in Myrtle Beach. He’s gonna bring a lot to the table in Boise…gonna be great to watch. Well Dunne! Byron.

Southern living isn’t just a magazine with great recipes and striking decorating ideas. Southern living is the pace, social mores and lovely lilt to life lived south of the Mason Dixon line…where thank you notes are still a thing and calling on neighbors to sit and chat over iced tea is done regularly. Getting his first taste of genteel southern life is PETER NOLL, who is the newest resident of Meridian, Mississippi. Besides unpacking from his move from California, PETER’s dance card will be full, what with him being the new Group Director of Marketing and Promotions for Waypoint Media. He’s wrangling Waypoint’s TV stations in Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Indiana. Peter has worked in marketing and as GM in Tulsa at KJRH, Bakersfield at KERO, WEWS in Cleveland … all after starting at KHOU in Houston. Normally, this is where we say Well Dunne! Peter, but let’s put a southern spin on it and say Well Dunne! Ya’ll.

There’s nothing liberating, encouraging, exciting or smart about putting people in boxes and not letting them go. Sure, there’s the literal meaning with the accompanying legal repercussions, but the reality in most cases is the aggravating everyday practice of funneling talent into a box they’re already in and not allowing growth. More clearly, if you aren’t doing exactly a certain job phrased in the exact language used in an ad, then you have zero chance of even making a case to do the job in question. In other words, you’re in a box with no clear supportive development path. It stinks and it has to stop. Nobody finds their higher and best self in repetition. More on this to come…along with a very exciting announcement. Stay tuned.

There’s a lot of movement happening… people moving from the mountains to the coast and vice versa. Three major shifts…does that make a trend? It is a pattern – perhaps it might develop into something interesting. Shift No. 1 is DENNISON HOWARD, a native of Colorado Springs, Born and raised in The Springs, one of the most beautiful places in the country, Dennison is a born storyteller. Started telling stories via his roll as a news cameraman. First at KRDO and then KOAA. He was exceptional behind the lens…was assigned to all the important projects. It wasn’t until his then-CSD SYDNEY RUBIN saw something special and brought him into her department. He loved it…flourished (she’s quite the instructor and mentor) and now he’s on his way to Seattle where he’ll be a writer producer for her team at KCPQ, Tribune’s Fox affiliate. I see a lot more seafood in his future and even more exciting work coming out of the station. He begins March 19. Well Dunne! Dennison.

Talk about timing. It’s as important as Location, and in this case it’s a matter of Timing meeting Location resulting in – Mardi Gras! New Orleans, baby! Where the good times roll, the masks are on, the krewes are flinging beads and wearing crowns…and everybody is living it up as only they can. It’s the ideal time to get a job at Tegna’s NBC affil WWL TV, and that’s exactly what NICK CHABARRIA has done. He’s the new Marketing/Promotions Producer for Marketing Director JOSHUA MEZA and the creative department – and it’s all happened just in time for Shrove Tuesday. Nick calls Oak Lawn, Illinois home, which means he’s a Chicago guy. He went to Mizzou’s revered Journalism school and got a degree. He, of course, did work at KOMU in Columbia while in school as well as studied in Argentina and helped refugees. Great guy alert. For the last two years, he’s been in front of the camera as a multimedia journalist for KFVS, the Raycom CBS in Cape Girardeau in the southeast corner of the Show Me state. He’s going to be a big asset to the department with insights because he’s ‘been there’. Well Dunne! Nick.

Colin is a grad of Slippery Rock State University, which has to be one of the most original names for, well, for anything let alone an institution of higher learning. What a long, slog of a week. But, from every face plant to the canvas, we rise…and better, bigger adventures greet us. Mold our growth. So, with that in mind, let’s focus at some fun things from promo types here and there, like WAHEED ALQAWASMI, late of TV promo at FOX in Memphis (Cox’s WHBQ) . He‘s in Oxford, Mississippi this weekend with his film, Lives Restarted for the Oxford Film Fest. It’s a documentary about Holocaust survivors…how they survived the camps, made their way here to the US, to Memphis specifically. How they restarted their lives…rose up.
