KIRO’s CSD CHLOE HOUSER has landed herself ‘a catch’ as her new Brand Manager. JIM MARKETTI is heading to Seattle and he starts next Monday. The University of Wisconsin-Madison grad started as a news photog at WITI in Milwaukee and transitioned to promo there, and that led to being Exec Producer Ad and Promo at KSTP in Minneapolis. Chicago was the next market where he was Promo Manager at FOX WFLD then at NBC’s WMAQ. He went back to WFLD as a member of the VP Club. Jim’s also been doing his promo magic for Weigel Broadcasting and was Creative Director for the Local Station Group for them. He’s been busy over at WLS in Chicago lately. You need to give him a hearty Well Dunne! Jim!

There’s a connection between St. Louis and the Tampa area. For ages, the baseball Cardinals held spring camp across the Bay in St. Petersburg. Tampa has all the fun in the sun possibilities the Midwest lacks. And now Tampa has another St. Louis connection because DON BOHAC has joined CSD DENNIS ELSBURY’s creative team at ABC affil WFTS; he’s the new multimedia marketing producer. In The Lou, he was promo producing for KMOV. He’s a southern gent who interned at WSB in Atlanta then went out to El Paso doing Topicals for KFOX. He did a stint at KIRO in Seattle, too. Very cool. Well Dunne! Don.

TGIF on the first day of June. And today’s spotlight is on Well Dunne! Talent’s MELANIE HAYNES, who is an actress on camera and a voice talent behind it. Come June 16, her film Antiquities will be part of the Dances With Films at TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood. She has the part of eccentric Aunt Patty in the film which also stars Andrew West of The Walking Dead, Ashley Green of Twilight fame and Mary Steenburgen who was just in Book Club.  The Kansas-born lady talent lives a very exciting life away from her mic, splitting her time between LA and Houston. You really need to give Mel a listen and remember her when you look for a female voice. Well Dunne! Melanie.

The American southwest is one of a kind. There’s nothing exactly like it, even though there are deserts that dwarf it in size and scope. But here in the states, our desert has brought forth art and history and mythology…mesas and vistas….saguaro cacti. Cowboys and westerns. The one thing missing (ok, there’s a few, but work with me here) is green. It’s pretty sparse and far between. Trees, flowers, grass…not so much. And rain. Well, you guys east of the Mississippi have had more than your fair share, while the west side of the river has been pretty dry. When BEN BATES takes the Multimedia Marketing Producer slot at Atlanta’s WXIA, he’ll be returning to the green that’s he’s missed while in Albuquerque as Assistant CSD for Hearst’s KOAT. Ben’s first TV job was at WVLA in Baton Rouge before he made the jump to KDVR in Denver. Both green. He then did a turn at Craftsy Network in the Mile High City before heading to DEILIA WILLIAMS’ creative team in The Q. A big thanks to him for pointing out that southern sweet tea is available at Chick-fil-A for those who crave it and are not in areas where it’s served most anywhere. Big Well Dunne! Ben.

REX MAIN is a great name. Rex means king. Main is, of course, the top. Rex Main is a name you use to get attention. And this particular Rex is adding to the creative output at Nexstar’s ABC affiliate in Augusta, GA, WJBF.  Yes, the golf mecca of the world (sorry Scotland, but you have no trees…). Rex is working with CSD CHUCK SPRUILL, who’s a great judge of talent. Rex has spent time in two of the most beautiful places, working in promo of course. He’s been at KREX in Grand Junction, Colorado as CSD as well as in the rose city, Tyler, Texas as CSD for KETK. His prodco has a great name as well: Main Video Productions. What’s in a name? How about what do we say now? Well Dunne! Rex

Yes, Austin is one of the coolest cities. Is it the music? Willie may live in Maui but he still visits Austin a lot. Is it the students? Lots of Longhorns in addition to the world’s second largest brick building. Bonus points to you if you know the first, comrade. Is Austin cool because of the gathering of new ideas and people who give those ideas a run? Well there is that.  Point being that the Texas capital is one cool market, and it’s where DAVID SQUIRES has worked for a good number of years. David has just been promoted to Vice President of Creative Services at KTBC there. Great choice…the man is a grad of Mizzou. For those who need a little mental jumpstart, Mizzou is University of Missouri located in Columbia. Noted for their journalism school, which is perhaps the best around. David started his TV career in Columbia at KMIZ where he punched newscasts. He punched news in Palm Springs at KESQ before jumping to the promotion department at KNTV in the San Francisco area. He then went to St. Louis’ KSDK before heading down river to Memphis where he was Promo Manager for WHBQ. He took the Promo Manager slot in Austin twice…with a Creative Director stint in between. Now he’s running the show and I can only imagine how hot marketing is amongst the bluebonnets. A Texas-size Well Dunne! David.

See ya’ll next Tuesday. Be safe.

TROY MCDONALD JR is the new member of CSD PAUL CHAPLIN’s creative crew at CBS affil WLKY in Louisville. Post Derby, L’ville is a great little city and Troy’s making the switch from Tribune’s CBS affil WTKR oceanside in the Norfolk, Virginia market. Well, not exactly Oceanside, but close to the bay and really downtown, but hey… Troy’s background started on the college radio station where he was on-air and did it all. First job in TV was running camera at WLJT in Martin, TN where he went to college. He was a Graphic Designer for Raycom in Memphis at WMC as well. Paul is thrilled to have him contributing as a writer producer for the Hearst station. Well Dunne! Troy.

CSD STEVE PATRICK of Nexstar’s duop WIBV/WNLO in Buffalo looked outside the run-of-the-mill ‘hire a producer’ situation and found a talented, enthusiastic candidate to add to his promo team. Welcome SARAH SIGNORELLI to the CBS/CW operation. Ms. Sarah has been creative via graphics and marketing for several operations in The Nickel City. Sidebar: That nickname comes from the back of the five-cent piece, which is, of course, a buffalo. Back to Sarah – she writes for Buffalo Spree, which is the cutting edge magazine. Did an internship at WGRZ there. She was a triple major in college: communications, journalism and digital media arts. Rare and wonderful indeed. That deserves a three-time Well Dunne! Sarah.

Don’t you love ‘outside the norm’ promotions? The kind that make you say “Wish I could have done that.” There’s a video to support the next Jurassic Park movie that is not only spot-on directorially, but is hilarious to boot. Give it a gander.

It never fails…when you run across someone and you know they’re going to be a star. Going to stand out and be amazing. Words to describe it (and that could be the word – It) are hard to come by and frankly are like reading a white wine description. It’s close but doesn’t really nail what you want to say. But you know. Such was the case with BROOKE DEARBORN. She was a participant in a Topical Boot Camp SYD RUBIN and I did for CBS’ WBZ in Boston. SEAN BARNACOAT had assembled an A-List team of promo and news pros ready to sharpen their topical skills…and they were attentive to the max. Brooke had that “sumin-sumin” as Oprah would say. Now she has a new job over at the FOX station in Beantown. Hate to see CBS lose her, but we all move on as we grow.  Brooke has a very interesting background in promotions: Promo Producer for NECN as well as WWE plus time at Jerry Springer Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Boston U grad deserves a hearty Well Dunne! Brooke.

A pathfinder has passed. She was bold, brash, profane, dedicated, passionate, colorful in all ways, absolutely loved her dogs and her job, and in the end, was ravaged by that torturer dementia. MARTHA PELL STANVILLE passed away yesterday, May 17, after fighting the ghost fight against the condition that robs a person of what makes them unique. A southern belle raised in Macon, Georgia, she never lost her lovely accent and fell in love with TV when she took at job, at 19, at WMAZ in her hometown. Her dreams of musical theatre stardom were replaced by the excitement of TV marketing. Along the way, she was President of American Women in Radio and Television and worked at WCCO in Minneapolis as well as leading TV affiliates in top markets. At NBC TV Network she was VP of Affiliate Advertising and Promotion Services and was noted for her amazing parties. She was like a bulldog about admission, btw, and she never missed a trick or nametag. She was a redhead and could cut an imposing figure when needed. She went to work at Fred Hayman when he as THE perfume man in Bev Hills and she knew everybody…and they knew her. For over 50 years, she brought creativity, fun, and a joi de vivre – je ne sait quoi to everything. She will be missed by many, many people. God bless ya Martha.

A real Jersey girl or guy knows the difference between Tenafly and Cresskill. If you don’t, you should since one never knows when that bit of info can come in handy, even if you aren’t close to the zip at all. Cresskill is where JOHN FORGETTA calls home, and he calls WKYC, the NBC affil in Cleveland, his new place of business. He’s the recently hired Marketing Director, calling GM MICKI BYRNES boss, the lucky guy. The Weslyan grad has a wonderful background as brand strategist and communications for several large insurance concerns and has even been Editorial Director for American Greetings. That sounds like a blast. Most interesting former slot – Deputy Editor of the LA Times in LA of course. Let’s give him a rousing Well Dunne! John!

A good heart and a sharp creative mind is the ideal combination for anybody in television according to me.  To point out an example of one such person embodying these two ideals, we need go no further than North Carolina, where RYAN POPE has been named CSD of WWAY in Wilmington. I’ll let him tell his own story and I want to hear a big Well Dunne! Ryan when you’re finished reading.  “After graduating from East Carolina University in 2005 with a BS in Communications, Video Production, I finally landed my first gig in TV in 2006.  I started at WWAY TV3 when it was located in Downtown Wilmington and started as a production assistant/live truck operator/morning photog.  After just a few months of giving it all I had, I got promoted to Promotions Manager/Creative Director.  It sure was tough jumping right into those shoes, but it gave me tons of valuable experience.  I got offered the same position at 41 NBC WMGT in Macon, GA in 2008 and packed up and left my home state.  41 NBC had no promotions department when I started and I was tasked at building the department from the ground up.  I have always been the “creative guy” and I also love to help people in need.  So over the years I developed a strategy to help those in need WITH my creativity.  The stations I have worked at were never number one in ratings, but we WERE number one in community service and using the power of TV to help the less fortunate.  I became heavily involved with The Salvation Army over the years and eventually left 41 NBC to work for them and get a break from the madness of small market TV.  Now, I am back at the place it all started and have a team of creative folks I am tasked at managing.  I can’t wait to get dug back into this wonderful Cape Fear area and think of ways to help those less fortunate with the power of TV!  I was awarded a community service award by the Mayor/City of Macon before I left for the “Blossoming Hearts” campaign I created and managed for many years.  It is my hope that I can develop some creative projects to execute for people in need around the NC Coast!”  Now that, Ladies and Gents, is one great guy. Well Dunne.

Job Alert – Director of Marketing and Audience Development WTXL Tallahassee

WTXL, the ABC Affiliate in Tallahassee, FL seeks a Director of Marketing and Audience Development (DMAD) to lead the station’s marketing department.  This role provides expertise and support to News, Digital, Sales and all other local content efforts for multiplatform creative strategies, and commercial production services.

This is the perfect opportunity for someone who is already a Director of Marketing, Marketing Director, or an experienced Promotion Manager, Creative Services Director, or Senior Producer ready for the next step in their career.

This individual is a hands-on leader, skilled in multi-platform marketing, outside media delivery, client creative services projects, and communications and community relations activities. Exceptional organizational and strategic thinking required to implement market research recommendations and achieve goals in audience development and revenue growth.  The DMAD manages a creative team to produce award-worthy, audience-motivating promotion that will expand the station’s rapidly-growing broadcast and digital media presence.

The DMAD is also responsible for the station’s overall marketing strategy, including outside media planning and buying, budgets and employee training modules. Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Advertising, Film/Video or related field preferred.  Experience in a marketing leadership position required. Send creative reel demonstrating advanced knowledge of video production, especially Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects and DSLR cinematography.

Qualified applicants only, apply online at https://careers-raycommedia.icims.com. Attach resume with cover letter, and link to your most recent work.  Drug screen and Motor Vehicle Record check required.  No phone calls please. EOE-M/F/D/V

Let’s start on the far west coast and work our way eastward this week, shall we? Seattle is pretty much the farthest west without leaving what the Alaskans call The Lower 48. And the soon-to-be FOX station currently Tribune (at least as of this writing….things change so very quickly Toto) has a new hire. Say hello to SCOTT KRAGELUND, now aboard Q13/JOE tv/Portland’s CW triopoly. Hmm, are all three going to FOX? Anyway, Scott is a TV guy who calls Spokane home. Yes Spokane home to the Spokane Indians baseball club. Scott has a sheepskin in broadcasting from Washington State U and went to work first as an intern then as a morning news show director at ABC affil KXLY. He loves punching live shows and did so for Q13 before taking a Redmond-WA based tech job as Video Production Manager. Like a lot of the tech companies, it shone brightly before losing sparkle and now, he’s using all the great experience to return to his old Seattle stomping grounds as their Creative Services Writer Producer. He gets to call SYD RUBIN boss and they all work and play well with former promo pro now GM PAM PEARSON and Marketing Honcho BRENT AYRES. Well Dunne! Scott!

Without the excellent efforts of the entertainment PR folks, the biz would be at a standstill. Yes it would. Entertainment PR folks are the best. And one of the best of the best has a new job to share with ya’ll. BRANDII TOBY-LEON is now part of Bullseye Communications. Lots going on in Kansas City, especially this time of year. Tornado watches and warnings were afoot when this post was being compiled, and we can say, luckily, it did not hurt people, just some signs and such. Scared them and all, yes. With half their market being on the Kansas side of the state line, a tornado is not all that rare. Think Dorothy and Toto. Bad weather finds the TV meteorologists in high demand; their skills and information essential. Lots of TV sets tuned in. One station in the market has two new promo helpers for the no doubt de rigueur POP. CSD MIKE STEWART has brought JILL BALLARD on board as his Assistant Creative Services Director and welcomed first-time-TV-job producer CHANCE PARSONS. Oh, the station is CBS affil KCTV, owned by Meredith.  Jill has come to to KC from Springfield, MO, where she got her degree from Missouri State U before she was a Producer and Director for KOLR. Bonus points if you know the former name of  Missouri State. Jill of late has been Digital Content Director at KRBK in Brad Pitt’s hometown. More on Chance when the weather is better…he’s been tied up. Let’s all give these two a big Well Dunne!

May the 4th be with you.

Adding just one word to a title is pretty amazing. Of course, one gets more responsibility as well as, if one is savvy, compensation. A company can only show its love via credit, compensation or perks. Everything else is just a gold sticker that gets tossed the end of the day. Anyway, the one word added to KEITH GRANT’s title at ABC Entertainment Marketing is…Executive. He is now Executive Creative Director, a step up from his Creative Director role at the network. The Ithaca College grad has also done creative for entertainment marketing agency Pongo and been On-Air Manager for Fox Sports. All in LA of course, darling! Big Well Dunne! to Keith!  Well deserved.

Does anybody like or even understand the marketing idea behind the Volkswagen spot where the world is ending via a meteor and the couple keep putting stuff into the back of their car? Asking for a friend.

Think About This:  “You might think you don’t matter in this world, but because of you, someone has a favorite mug to drink their tea out of each morning that you bought them.  Someone hears a song on the radio and it reminds them of you. Someone has read a book you recommended to them and gotten lost in its pages. Someone’s remembered a joke you told them and smiled to themselves on the way to work. Someone’s tried on a top and felt beautiful because you complimented them on it.  Someone has a memory that makes them grin that involves you. Someone now likes themselves a little bit because you made a passing comment that made them feel good. Never think you don’t make an impact; your fingerprints can’t be wiped away from the little marks of kindness that you’ve left behind.”  ~  no idea but this is gorgeous.

Now this globe-trotting marketing pro has a new and very interesting role dealing with cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, which this writer has struggled to understand and is still on the fence. However, Ambrosus is committed to it and Stephen is their CMO. Best part is it’s in Italy, so he doesn’t have to venture far from his Milan digs where he had been CMO of Versace. The man moved to Italy after being in Munich as CMO for Escada and before that Santa Monica where he was EVP CMO for Game Show Network, which goes by GSN. The Middlebury grad has handled marketing for Conde Nast, E! Network, Warner Bros and Turner. Totally jealous of these wonderful slots! And very happy for him and his new onw. One, two, three…Well Dunne! Stephen.
