Let’s start February with an apology going out to KLAS CSD HENRY VAZQUEZ, whose name I have accidently misspelled not once, not twice….yeah, red face on this side of the net. It won’t happen again, which is good because Mr. Vazquez shared a change and deserves all the kudos associated with that.  It’s not really good news for KLAS, but it’s great news for ASHISH BANTHIA, who is headed to Dallas Fort Worth to be Brand Design Manager for NBC’s KXAS. Creative Head Honcho GARY WANN in DFW created the job for the Kolkata, India native, thus proving that not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Ashish has an MFA in Computer Arts from Memphis College of Art and got his first TV job in Memphis as a Graphic Designer at WREG, working with LES POLLARD. Next stop for Ashish was the Norfolk market and a Design Director slot at WAVY/WVBT. The one and only LEE MINARD lured him west to KLAS where he’s been highlighting his art to the delight of everyone. Yes, people actually groaned when Ashish announced he’d be leaving – but everyone is happy for him and his fam. Big Well Dunne! Ashish.

Best wishes to WSAV’s CSD DAN FLAXER who popped the question this week…and of course the answer was ‘yes!’. Put him on the ‘His Heart is Taken’ list. Savannah is such a romantic town…

Been so slammed, just now getting around to the updates from NBC’s KXAS in Dallas. Thanks to VP Creative GARY WANN for this:

We’ve been hard at work this summer looking for the right people to bring on to our team, and it’s paid off. MATT HOPKINS comes to the NBC5 Marketing Department as Senior Designer. Matt was already in house with the NBC Owned Artworks, the station groups internal resource for News and other graphics. ARUS MANNING now has to drive 5 minutes longer than usual to work, leaving CBS’s KTVT and my good pal DAVID HERSHEY… who made me buy him lunch after Arus made the jump. Arus was a designer and wanted to stretch his creative muscles, joining us as a Promo Producer/Editor. Arus and I worked together at the big 1-1 before I made my way to KPRC in Houston. JOEY FRANCKS, a former CSD and long time producer, comes to Dallas from KTEN in Sherman-Dennison as our Prime-Time Promotion Producer. ADRIN DOMINGUEZ won’t even have to leave his edit bay! Adrian joins us from our sister station KXTX Telemundo as Promo Shooter/Editor. The kind folks from CH 39 are letting us do some office swapping so that Adrian can keep his current digs.

Well Dunne! Matt, Arus, Joey Adrin and a big thanks to Gary for sharing.

Job Alert – Des Moines’ CBS affil KCCI rarely ever has an opening. Yeah, one of those places…a super operation. Anyway, there’s an opening now for someone to direct newscasts. You know – take camera 3, etc. The whole point is if you know of someone who would want to be part of the kind of station we wish they all are…seek out CSD and Ops man NICK ALLARD and he’ll take it from there.

What then? Would you, like Jim Carey in ‘The Truman Show” have the courage to walk off the set? Or like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix’ swallow the blue pill?"

I know times are tough. But imagine how tough it must be to fight cancer. You can help WBTV’s CSD JOHN RICE make a difference when he climbs on his bicycle to peddle 200 miles around Charlotte, NC. It’s his annual 24 Hours of Booty ride – a fundraiser for cancer research. Yep, you can even click here and donate. It doesn’t seem merely enough to say Well Dunne! John.

Missouri folks are favorites. The home state advantage, so to speak. Such is the case with the wonderful DAVID CLEVIDENCE who has been promoted to Creative Services Director at Sinclair’s duop KVCW/KVMY in Las Vegas. Yes, it is the CW/MYTV combo in Sin City. David hails from the Show Me State and is lovin’ the hot desert life in Nevada’s major city. It’s a promotion for him – love to hear that. David has worked doing TV at FOX in Cape Girardeau, MO as well as WDKA in Paducah, KY. Let’s not forget his work at St Louis’ Silver Streak Production Studios. Nothing like a movie buff to turn to TV promo as a way of life. Most promo pros are nuts about cinema. One such cinema buff is now producing promos for CSD KRISTIN JOYAL at LIN’s WAVY in the lovely Hampton Roads section of Virginia. JOSHUA CHAGANI is the man. The Stuart, Florida creative studied at Elon U in NC and is the winner of the LIN Scholarship Award. Impressive. Joshua has gotten to work at WALA in Mobile and WOOD in Grand Rapids before settling in at WAVY. His taste in film is quite impressive – he counts among his faves the Star Wars Trilogy, The Apartment and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Well Dunne! Joshua.

Not one, not two, not three, not four but five…count ‘em five open slots to fill at DFW’s NBC KXAS. CSD GARY WANN got the okee-dokey to hire a Sr. Designer, two (2) Topicals, 1 Preditor and a shooter/editor for his creative group. Wahoo…take that unemployment stats. Gary is the man to impress with your online reel and resume.

It’s all about the family. Sure, that’s pretty close to the Family Channel’s marketing line, but it’s just a major truth. One that WFTS Promotion Manager KARLENE BALL is acting upon. She and her hubby and little one are going to move back to her neck of the woods…the NE. It’s just too far down I-95 from there to Tampa. So if you’re in upstate NY or Mass….and looking for a talented and super promo pro, she’s your lady. Can’t wait to see how it all works out, but I’m betting on it being Well Dunne!

Yes, her Promo Manager job at WTFS is open.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers (who really need a brush up in grammar vis a vis their name imo) has put together a list of the best places to live and work, naming New York City #1, with Toronto #2, Chicago #5 and Houston #10. Obviously, humidity didn’t play a role in this survey.

But they left out GRAND RAPIDS. MI which is fighting back from making another list…one not so flattering. If you don’t know the story about how this AMAZING video came about, then click here and learn how a group effort + a focused goal + creative + talented camera people and producers can make a difference beyond belief.

The present is endlessly overwhelmed and devoured by the past. Forgiveness frees the forgiver. It extracts the forgiver from someone else’s nightmare."  ~ Lance Morrow

Despite the fact Dallas/Ft Worth is sitting in the middle of the tornado bull’s-eye, it’s still one of the best places to live. Today’s news comes from there from the one and only GARY WANN, who is the CSD at the NBC affil, KXAS in the Metroplex. He’s gotten some new faces and new titles to share. Already told ya’ll about TIM RICE. Also joining the team is TONY JORDAN who begins May 31 doing Topicals. He’s a national Emmy winner (like Gary himself) and has been at the FOX O&O in Houston.

But wait…there’s more! Getting a promotion to On-Air Promotion Manager is Texas lady KRISTAL MILAZZO, transitioning but still active doing sales projects while she expands her role on the day to day ops and the strategy focus. CARISMA RAMSEY moves from Writer/Producer to Sales Marketing Writer Producer and will be working with STEVE LEMONDS newly named Sales Marketing Photog/Editor. Whew…that’s a lot to report at one time. Well Dunne! Tony, Kristal, Carisma and Steve!

PBS is getting on the promo wagon. Read about the plan to break into programming with promos and, oh yea, spots. Begins in the fall. Click here.

USA Networks don’t want you to just watch their fun shows (admittedly, fan of many here) but also to chatter with others who like them. Why, they’re even throwing in stars and producers sometimes, too. All at  one time.  Chatter, ya’ll.

TIM RICE has left the capital of South Carolina and has landed in the heart of the Metroplex, the Dallas – Fort Worth market, where he’s been picked up at NBC’s KXAS. VP Marketing and Brand Development GARY WANN hired Tim to be the Senior Writer Producer and Tim will spend most of his time in the Ft. Worth location.  While in Columbia, Tim was the Media Operations Manager at Raycom’s FOX affil, WACH. Besides running his own creative shop called Thrice Creative, Tim has also been Marketing Manager at Augusta, Georgia’s WRDW   having earned his producer chops at WLTX, WLTV and KTVH. He put in nearly five years as a Director at QVC. The Washington State grad will no doubt love being in Texas and perhaps he will take some of the rain from the East coast to  the Lone Star State, which desperately needs some. Well Dunne! Tim.

Hot, hot cable net AMC has a new VP of PR. OLIVIA DUPUIS has been kicked up the ladder and is now a member of the VP club with this promotion. She had been Director of PR. The Denison U grad has been with Rainbow Media for about four years and before that was PR Director at Goodman Media International. Well Dunne! Olivia.

Job Alert – KSBW in GORGEOUS Monterrey, CA is  on the hunt for a Creative Services Director.

Someone please, please explain why TV station websites are so devoid of phone numbers or any other way to contact them in lieu of a time wasting form…many of which require the entering of information of no value to the aforesaid communication? Please.

When something happens that is just perfect…it’s amazing. When it happens in today’s economy, it’s nearly a miracle. So let’s shine our  miracle flashlight on TOM ROGERS, who has been named the Creative Services Manager of the FOX/CW duop in St. Louis, KTVI and KPLR respectively. It’s a miracle flashlight because the new job is so perfect for Mr. Rogers. (That’s not Tom in the picture…keep reading and you’ll find out who it is) Tom’s a South Carolina boy who’s been in the River City long enough to know the best place to get Italian food over on The Hill. Family loves it there, so…when the slot opened up at KTVI/KPLR, it proved to be the Win-Win that we all talk about. A place where the work is appreciated is how he described it. He’s already on the job, having left Belo’s CBS affil, KMOV. Btw, the CSD slot at KMOV is now off the table. Back to the talented Tom, who has always let his modesty get in the way of the fact he is one of the VERY BEST producers around. I worked with him back in the KDNL days, when they were ABC. Other calls on Tom’s resume include WHNS and WCBD. Best news…his commute is shorter and his family doesn’t have to pack a single box. A huge and special Well Dunne! to Tom.

Speaking of KTVI/KPLR, the lovely SUSIE SHRAPPEN, who is CSD at the above mentioned station duop, is getting married in September. The lucky man is one of the good ones. Well Dunne! you two.

Job Alert: CSD and Promo Manager slots open at KPRC, NBC in Houston. GARY WANN is moving up Interstate 45 to Dallas, where he’ll join the VP club at NBC’s KXAS. His official new title is VP of Marketing and Brand Development. He’ll be starting Monday, thus the empty slots in Houston at the Post Newsweek operation. Gary is muy talented and has worked in such towns as Charlotte, Detroit and Dallas/Ft. Worth. That’s him in the picture, btw. He’s got a great smile, btw. Well Dunne! Gary.

OMG…why didn’t we think of this ourselves? Scene: Downtown LA…big event at Nokia or Staples. Problem: parking (since limos are really stretching the budget nowadays) . Answer: ParkWhiz. You select your closer-than-this spot online, pay for it, print out your receipt and worry no more. A guaranteed parking place. Brilliant.

Someone…anyone…what is the marketing point of Maybelline mascara using the Magnum PI theme music? Huh? I see no connection between the two….anybody?
