Off to the Bay Area…that’s KATHIE SMITH’s plan. She’s going to FOX’s KTVU to head up creative/marketing…so many different titles do they all really mean something different? It’s a VP slot..bravo. Ms. Smith is going to be leaving FOX KTBC in Austin. Yep, everybody’s favorite city Austin, capital of Texas and all-round amazing place to live. And that’s a VP slot as well. Kathie’s been in Austin quite some time, so she’s no doubt got a lot of packing to do. Let’s all wish her a Well Dunne!
What can one do when one fails to live up to a promise? Humbly apologize and hope that it’s a learning situation. Such is the case with the one and wonderful BONNIE BARCLAY, whose involvement with Andrew Young Foundation’s documentaries had a high note last Friday evening, when their latest doc hit the airwaves in Tampa, Detroit, Mobile, Minneapolis, Macon and Tallahassee. Should have been in last Friday’s post. Totally dropped the ball. Mea culpa. But wait..there’s hope – in market #1! You New Yorkers can tune in to WWOR this coming Sunday, February 18 at 3pm. The doc is called Facing the Cross. Andrew Young returns to the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. for the first time since witnessing the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Watch. Or record. Quality TV meets history. Rare and worth the time. Well Dunne! Ms. Barclay.
Let’s hear it for GENE ROBINSON who got a promotion recently. He had been Interim Chief Operating Officer for Arizona Public Media in Tucson for the past several months. There are days when things go as planned, and then there are days when one wonders if the universe is so out of sorts, it might be The End. That being said, let’s also add that, once a car runs out of gas, it isn’t really easy to steer well. Same with mental acuity…after a day of heavy mental lifting, is there really any point in forcing the brain to perform? As happened yesterday, a late night brain fog can really muck things up. No smarty pants, alcohol was not involved. Soon- to-be Tucson resident GENE ROBINSON is leaving Phoenix TV, the Meredith station KPHO. Had the wrong station yesterday, so there you are. Still sending Well Dunne! to Gene.
Speaking of Phoenix, one of the best Art Directors around is CHRIS AYERS, who is doing the creative thing for Right This Minute, the syndicated show out of Magic Dust TV – in Phoenix. He has a very cool podcast, On the Grid . For Phoenix peeps.
Job Alert – Sr. Producer KTVU Oakland/SF (Erik Candiani your boss = great!)
Not so gentle reminder that Well Dunne! Talent handles the best voice talent for any and all projects. Why the best? Because nobody else who places voices has ever produced a promo, trailer, interstitial, show or resulting awards. Yeah. So these voices are producer-picked. So what are you waiting for?
Think About This: "The outer path we take is public knowledge, but the path with heart is an inner one. The two come together when who we are that is seen in the world coincides with who we deeply are. As we grow wiser, we become aware that the important forks in the road are usually not about choices that will show up on any public record; they are decisions and struggles to do with choosing love or fear; anger or forgiveness; pride or humility. They are soul-shaping choices." ~ Jean Shinoda Bolen

Paul McCartney only has one vacation home. It’s in Tucson. Yes, Tucson is THAT wonderful. And come the end part of March, it’s where GENE ROBINSON and familia will be calling home. He’s another creative who’s taking leave of the affiliate TV biz, turning in his key at TEGNA’s KPNX, the NBC affil in the Valley of the Sun where he’s been Brand Manager. He’s also wrangled brand for indie KTVK, which is TEGNA. He’ll be clocking in at the University of Arizona where he’ll be Director of Marketing and Communications for Arizona Public Media. Yes, that is a PBS affiliate, but let’s not spit hairs. Gene has the most gorgeous family – a lucky man indeed. He’s lived in Sacramento and worked at the Hearst station there and then spent two years as Director of TV Communications for the California Highway Patrol in the Cali capital. Here’s a big Well Dunne! Gene!

CSD GENE ROBINSON of Phoenix’s CBS affil KPHO has found himself (and the station) an Art Director. CLARK PACE made the switch from being at the Indie KTVK in the Valley of the Sun. It was an 18 year run at KTVK where Clark did all the art jobs. He’s also done freelance and it sounds like he did some amazing projects. I hear he’s a major movie buff and trivia expert. And, this is a quote, a “HUGE Star Wars nerd.” Well Dunne! Clark.
Think About This: Note – this is an obituary that was so beautifully phrased about a life so lovingly led, it is worth sharing:
Mrs. T was someone who appeared fragile, but she was a fighter who lived through the Depression, World War II and many difficult times. She was married for 64 years and had the sorrowful experience of seeing her husband die in September of 2010. Yet she bucked up, straightened her head and pushed on as far as she could.
She taught others loyalty, kindness, love and fortitude; not by her words, but by her actions. She always listened and comforted, but when she made her mind up about something – that was it, that’s the way it was going to be.
In the past few years her body failed and she was in severe back, leg and knee pain. But she took each day as it came, reached out to God, and was known to many times say, “It’s just amazing, today I asked the Lord to help me and he did; he helped me through.” Whether it was finding lost keys, papers, a memory, or just making it from her bed to the door, she had a strong arm to lean on through it all.
In memory, the family encourages friends to spend time with someone they love, say a kind word, or repair a broken relationship.
From one state capital to another…GENE ROBINSON is saying adieu to California’s capital Sacramento and is heading to Arizona to head up the creative efforts of Meredith’s CBS affil, KPHO. He’s a California man through and through, from his degree from Cal State Sacramento to his long career at KCRA, where he began as Promotion Manager for then-owner Kelly Broadcasting’s The West. While there, Gene served as News Promo Manager, Assistant Creative Services Director and then as CSD. Hearst took over ownership somewhere along the way. For the last two years, Gene has been Director of the Television Communications Center for the California Highway Patrol. CHiPs. No word on whether he has a motorcycle license or those cool boots Ponch and John wore on the show. Anyway, it’s great news and a big Well Dunne! to Gene. The welcome matt is out for you in the Valley of the Sun.
Happy birthday to the one and only SHORTY BACON.
PETE BARRETT gets our best wishes for a speedy ‘back on your feet’ – he’s getting his knee operated on today and no doubt will be back better than new.
