PROMAX is under way, full steam in NYC. It’s time to shine a light on one of the good…no, let’s make that one of the great guys in the biz. JOHN MILLER. Great because he always encouraged people to do work above what they thought they could…great because he was fair…great because he kept a sense of humor about what it is to market entertainment. Bringing out the best in people is a gift. And he looks good as Groucho Marx. He’s being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s currently Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of NBC Sports Group and he’s held any number of marketing titles for The Peacock. Where he keeps all the awards for the work he and his people have done…well, I guess he has a lot of shelf space in his office. He’s a Chicago man who got started at WBBM and then transitioned to CBS Network where he handled affiliate promotions and head of promotions for CBS News. What a wonderful choice. Well Dunne! John.
PATIENCE CARTER, the Fox Philadelphia intern who was shot in Orlando’s horrific Pulse killings was featured on the front landing page of the Washington Post. Her story is very moving.

JOHN MILLER has long been known to be a marketing leader, a man from whose brain (along with VINCE MANZE) sprang “Must See TV”, the sparkling and effective campaign done when he was EVP of Advertising for NBC. For the last several years, since 2011, John’s headed up the NBC Sports Agency as CMO. He’s now gotten a new and exciting title within the NBC family – CMO of NBC’s Olympics. Add to that being head of the NBCU Marketing Council and John’s exhibiting his talents and leadership in wonderful ways. He’s well deserving of all good things that come his way. John is not retiring and rumors to that effect are just not true. Well Dunne! John. Olympic Gold for you.
Taking John’s place as head of NBC Sports Agency is JENNIFER STORMS. She’ll be making the transition back to entertainment from being SVP of Global Sports Marketing for Pepsi. Jenny has a winning track record from her days prior to Pepsi when she held various marketing positions at Turner in Atlanta where she was SVP of Sports Marketing and Programming. She’s a Northwestern grad who deserves a cheering Well Dunne!

It’s the perfect time to be in Michigan – summer. And its particularly sweet when you have a great new job, as is the case with PHIL KRAPOHL, who is now heading up the creative efforts at WEYI, the Sinclair-owned NBC affil in the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City market. Phil’s new gig is about an hour up I-75 from Detroit, where he was a Writer-Producer for Detroit’s WXYZ for the one-and-only CSD DAVE BAUMANN. Before WXYZ, Phil was a W/P at WJRT when Disney owned that station. Yes, WJRT is in the Flint market, so Phil already has a handle on the Ins and Outs. BTW, Sinclair is going to build a brand new, state-of-the-art facility for the good folks at WEYI. Sweet. Well Dunne! Phil.

It’s only four blocks, but it’s a new office, new station, new job for ALLAN SNYDER down in Little Rock. He’s been tapped to be the Promotions and Marketing Director of KATV, ABC in Arkansas’ capital. Which is just about four blocks from his former job, CSD at NBC affil KARK. He really knows the market; worked at the FOX affil there as well. Sending out the best Well Dunne! to Allan.
Speaking of the best, kudos to Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS, who won the Best VO Demo Reel award this weekend in NYC for – what else -his new demo, which you (yep…you) can hear by clicking his name and face on the new, improved and highly entertaining new Well Dunne! website — but ya gotta wait tip Monday. Wait all weekend but you can do it. So let’s applaud Mitch and admit this is a not too subtle commercial for Mitch’s deep booming voice. Well Dunne! Mr. P.
So you think that great ideas are going to keep you on the upward trajectory of your career? A Princeton professor has a different view and it’s a must-see article (thank you VINCE MANZE and JOHN MILLER for the must-see part of that….)

JOHN MILLER. Yes, the man who has been to all the PROMAXs since 1976…and he does’t look a day older for it.
Remember, if you can’t see the jpg’s go to blog.welldunnetalent.com and you’ll have them all.
Well Dunne!’s crackerjack stringer RAY ECKE is hard at work at PROMAX, writing up yesterday’s events as he attends today’s sessions. In the meantime, check out the frivolity on the faces of some Maxers on their way to the Intrepid party. Here’s his WEDNESDAY REPORT
Wednesday report from PR and writer RAY ECKE
…Another amazing day at PromaxBDA here in sunny NYC…
The day began with some great writing insights from the great writer Elmore Leonard and a conversation with CNN’s Anderson Cooper who was interviewed by CBS Early Show co-host Erica Hill. Cooper revealed details about his forthcoming syndicated talk show. “This is not a news program, we think this year we will be the only show on the air that covers a broad spectrum of topics,” Cooper said. “From a big celebrity interview one day, to a hot-button social issue the next day, and the following day an interview with a real person who has a real-life challenge we can all learn from. And pop culture stuff, I am as big a student of pop culture as anyone out there.”
LEE HUNT (KB insert-Lee is one of the smartest and most visionary…he’s amazing) is always informative “Best Practices” drew huge crowds as he unveiled his latest research into effective promo placement, cross channel promotion and the value of social network sharing apps to network promotion. Lee’s entire presentation is available on his website — http://leehunt.com/
Motionographer’s Justin Cone presented his always-popular State of Design, which focused on best creative design and motion graphics of the year. All of the work shown can be seen at www.motionographer.com/sod2011.
The day ended with the Marketing Genius panel in which 4 promo projects were presented to a panel of experts that included JOHN MILLER, MO of NBC Universal; Susan Credle, CCO, Leo Burnett; and “30 Rock” co-star Judah Friedlander. The winner was design house Roger’s work on the Scream awards, with STEPHEN ARNOLD Music’s work on the WGNO’s God Bless Louisiana’s promo campaign coming in a close second.
Looking forward to today’s session with Spike Lee interviewed by Charlie Rose and of course the big Awards extravaganza hosted by my old college buddy Jay Mohr.
Job Alert: Manager of Consumer Marketing at Comcast Entertainment in LA – includes on-air, off-air, online, paid media and viral/social media marketing.
Forbes has some unhappy stats to share about the impact of technology and a bad economy on our business: “Broadcast news analysts and advertising and promotions managers experienced five-year declines of 16% and 33% respectively. The adjustment follows a wide-spread media transition to online content and shrinking advertising revenue and budgets”
Think About This: “Sometimes you’ve got to let everything go – purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything…whatever it is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.” ~ Tina Turner
Enthusiasm is such a powerful state of mind and behavior. I hear that enthusiasm is running over in the new writer producer at CBS’ KOVR in Cali Capital Sacramento. Coming onboard the creative team headed by CSD DREW FOWLER is SHAD SELBY (great name btw) who is making the transition from an ad agency environment to the station-side. Shad, who hates to admit it but his first name is the name of a fish, hails from Pasadena, Santa Barbara and Lake Tahoe. Three fave locales. He was Creative Director at Astone/Crocker/Flanagan and was producer and director for all the TV and radio spots at the Sacto agency. He’s in good hands…when I talked with him, he was getting writing tips from Promotion Manager DON SMITH. Great station you have there, Shad. Well Dunne!
Hurray for JOHN MILLER of NBC and his new slot. Read about what the NYTimes has to say about it all. Well Dunne! Well Dunne!
Oops…for quite some time now, I’ve listed a CSD open slot at WDSU down in New Orleans. Not true. And it was definitely not what the REAL CSD wanted to see at all. No kidding. Our most sincere apologies to BILLY PILGRIM, who is heading the creative efforts at Hearst-owned NBC affil in the Crescent City. Seems the confusion stemmed from a old web page listing the opening, and WD!TB checks open jobs via the web. Billy, I’ll buy the Hurricane next time I’m in town.
Happy belated birthday to WTVD’s CURTIS MILES! You never look any older. How do you do that?

Lots happening in LA pre-PROMAX. First off – the announcement that CBS is upping GAREN VAN DE BEEK to the top slot for their West Coast marketing team. The new title is EVP and creative director. It’s the slot that opened when RON SCALERA died. Garen’s old title was SVP of on-air promotion. The UCLA grad has a history in local promotion, including creative work as CSD at KCBS LA, at Houston’s CBS affil KHOU, at WZZM in Grand Rapids, MI and his first slot at ABC affil KOAT in Albuquerque. Well Dunne! Garen.
Taking Garen’s slot is LORI SHEFA, now SVP of on-air promotion from VP on-air promotion. Lori, a Louisiana Tech grad, was at UPN as President of on-air promotion. She, too, has a local marketing background that includes CSD at WLWT Cincinnati, Minneapolis’ KSTP, WIVB in Buffalo and WDEF in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Another Well Dunne! to you Lori.
Over at Warners comes word that the super TEE GOLIHEW is now SVP publicity for Warner Bros Television. Tee, whose real name is TAMMY is the best. Well deserved promotion for sure.
She’s been at Warners for 16 years…sweet sixteen. Well Dunne! Tee.
Also at Warners, SCOTT ROWE is now SVP of world wide communications for Warner Bros Television Group (WBTG).
NIKKI FINKE’s Deadline Hollywood site is reporting that the one and only JOHN MILLER is going to step down from his slot as Chief Marketing Officer at NBC the end of the year. John is the classiest guy around. He might stay with NBC in another capacity, says Deadline Hollywood. John is the best and deserves the best. He’s a fixture at NBC after 28 years. Whatever he does, he’ll shine.
