What was the last big adventure you took? JOHN RICE went to Alaska. Sure, he was doing a media job there, which is the same career path as in the lower 48. He’s been CSD at KTVA in Anchorage, but actually overseeing creative for the Denali stations throughout the state, which is bigger than Texas. It’s been a major adventure. Just driving to Alaska is worthy of a binge watch series. That was a few years ago, and as exciting as the adventure has been, it was 4,381 miles, give or take, away from family. Family was the draw that is bringing John back to North Carolina. He’ll begin in mid-July as the CSD for Nexstar’s WNCN in the North Carolina capital. NC is a familiar haunt for him – he was in Charlotte at WCNC heading creative before going up South Street to WBTV in the same role. John’s a Texas Longhorn who has been in the promo biz for KHOU and various freelance callings in Houston. An avid cyclist, he’ll enjoy the rolling terrain of the Triangle but I know he’ll miss the moose. Well Dunne! John.

What better place to get the Christmas spirit than Alaska, where JOHN RICE’s neighbor has a pet reindeer. Yes, in Anchorage. John, who is heading up the Denali Media properties marketing and such, even had a close encounter with a 9 foot moose in his driveway. The moose was chill, in more ways than one, and took a nap nearby. For those Christmas-holics amongst us, Anchorage should be on your list. Christmas Eve weather forecast is for snow. Doesn’t that sound lovely! Well Dunne! John and Happy Christmas.
Definitely need more hours in the day. All in favor? Let’s take a moment from logs, last minute family matters, grocery emergency runs and traffic to think about the amazing good your operations can bring about. Take, for instance, CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN of 2C Media. There isn’t anybody who puts their heart into helping like these two and their whole company. They have made the children of Puerto Rico happy after a horrible hurricane. Chris and Carla et all have tirelessly raised funds, wrangled airlines and even delivered presents themselves – all to make a difference. It’s what getting up in the morning is all about. To say Well Dunne! is just not enough.
Read the beautifully written obituary for LEE MINARD. There will be a celebration of his life in the spring. He is more than missed.

St. Louis – home. Gateway to the West. Hard on the Mississippi, as they used to say. Where they play winning baseball by the classiest of baseball clubs. And over On The Hill, one can get the Italian food one’s tastebuds usually only dream of unless you find yourself actually in Italy. All this is prelude to news from KMOV, the CBS affil. Yes, the KMOV that has the best views of any office in ‘The Lou’, what with them overlooking the base of the Arch, the river, several bridges and The Old Cathedral. Checking into his new office with this million dollar view is TONY GETTS. The Ohio U grad is definitely a Midwesterner (high compliment indeed) who began his TV journey in Toledo where he wrote and produced promos at WTVG. From there it was on to WBNS in Columbus and then WHIO in Dayton, a mere 70 miles west. He’s been down at Cox’s ABC in Orlando under the palms before trading Lake Iola for the Mighty Mississip. A big St. Louis Well Dunne! Tony.
‘Ride where you are planted’ might be JOHN RICE’s motto. When he was at WBTV in Charlotte, John raised funds and pedaled his bike to help cure cancer. Now that he’s calling Alaska home and wrangling the creative for Denali Media Holding’s stations across The Last Frontier, John isn’t giving up his bike or his fundraising. Mr. Rice is participating in the Alaska’s Clean Air Challenge Cycling Event done in concert with the American Lung Association. He’s got the whole station involved as Team KTVA. You can help him out if you feel so moved by clicking here. Well Dunne! John and I bet your scenery this year will beat the stuffings out of the Charlotte environs (no offense Charlotte, but have you seen the Chugach Mountains?).

How’s this for a way to start a new year: watching fireworks explode over snow-covered mountaintops – and in the background, shining through, the Northern Lights. Yeah – one of those perfect life moments stored in the permanent memory section of your soul. This is how JOHN RICE started 2016. John is doing what most of us say we want to do – he’s changing it up and seeing what happens. Repotting himself is the phrase that comes to mind. In this case, changing it up means a move to Anchorage, Alaska from Charlotte, NC. It’s 4,335 miles according to Google maps, and if you would want to drive it (not in winter) the trip would be the basis of a documentary. John is the new Director of Marketing for Denali Media, the company that owns and runs several stations in the largest state. In his new role, he’ll be visiting and exploring The Last Frontier, including Sitka, recently named one of the prettiest small towns by Travel and Leisure. John’s main office is at KTVA, CBS, and from the sound of things, the place is gorgeous – all the latest equipment and even an award-winning Devlin Design news set. Alaska is an exciting difference for Mr. Rice, who’s a Texas boy with a degree from UT Austin. He’s done production (including documentaries) and headed up marketing efforts since he got that diploma. Call letters on his resume include KHOU in Houston, WCNC and WBTV in Charlotte. Join me in celebrating a very exciting chapter in John’s life adventure. Well Dunne! Mr. Rice.

Talk about thinking outside the box (or coffin) check out the Walking Dead Escape, a hands-on (or actually you want to NOT have hands on you) experience at Comic Con. It’s not cheap to dodge real dead zombies ($75) but for $15 you can watch. All info is here. Everything but the AMC logo….hmmmm….
NOBODY is more of a fan of JON HAMM’s looks than this writer. He’s even from St. Louis, which is more bonus points to add to that chiseled chin. However, those who hire him to do voiceover only really need to think again. His VO work is just barely adequate. The opinions expressed are mine and this is my blog, so deal with it. Kisses anyway, Jon.

I know times are tough. But imagine how tough it must be to fight cancer. You can help WBTV’s CSD JOHN RICE make a difference when he climbs on his bicycle to peddle 200 miles around Charlotte, NC. It’s his annual 24 Hours of Booty ride – a fundraiser for cancer research. Yep, you can even click here and donate. It doesn’t seem merely enough to say Well Dunne! John.

Don’t you love it when two favorites end up working together? Such is the case with WBTV, the CBS heritage station in Charlotte, where JOHN RICE heads up the marketing efforts. He’s hired BRIAN BALTOSIEWICH to be a Writer Producer for the Raycom station. A Michigan native (Detroit area fyi) Brian is moving to the Piedmont from Tucson, where he was with the Belo FOX affil, KMSB. Brian is making the drive with his wife this week…he’s already made the trek east once. Think Route 66, Brian. Well Dunne! and give a high five to News Director DENNIS MILLIGAN.
