As Ferris Buehler told us, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t slow down and look around, you might miss it.” And so it has been. So many life lessons in the times away, looking around. Such changes….such life impacting happenings. People being born….graduating….making a comeback that brings tears to eyes….learning from failures that appear to overwhelm…giving up and persisting and questioning. All these changes but we keep going along like before, getting upset in traffic, or when we spill a coffee, or when we feel rushed. Not real problems but yet they do impact us. Let’s vow to slow down and look around. Spend time with work that values efforts. Be with people who make us happy. It’s spring. New beginnings. New energy.

Quick lesson on hiring, from an HR expert and a creative now turned GM. Question: Do you need to post a job opening if you promote someone already on staff in the same area of work? No. I was surprised as well, but if you take someone in creative and advance them by adding new related job responsibilities, you don’t have to post the job. But then you don’t get to replace that person’s old job. Hope that was easy to understand. It’s an overview, a Cliff Notes kind of info bit.

The best, most enduring productions aren’t going to gain you ratings. They’ll gain you diapers, 2am feedings and years of PTA duties. And more love than you ever thought possible. Of course, you also get a new title with these special productions: Mom or Dad. Or even Mimi or PawPaw – very creative options for names today. A special production was just recently completed by KARA MCNEELY, VP of Creative Services and Programming for KABC in LA. She welcomed a second little one into her family, and that is exactly like the fabled ‘happy endings’ of a Disney movie. Well Dunne! Kara and family.

Well Dunne! to KCNC’s creative honcho ED CUSHING who invented the most marvelous word: Nontroversy. Noun. A manufactured controversy where none actually exists. “Did you see the nontroversey about the Starbucks cups? People will complain about anything!”

Think About This: (Thanks to KTAB’s KAREN YARBROUGH) “That thing that you do, after your day job, in your free time, too early in the morning, too late at night. That thing you read about, write about, think about, in fact fantasize about. That thing you do when you’re all alone and there’s no one to impress, nothing to prove, no money to be made, simply a passion to pursue. That’s it. That’s your thing. That’s your heart, your guide. That’s the thing you must, must do.” ~ Jes Allen

‘The Hat’ is back. If you got that email and work at CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento, then you know it’s the way the station welcomed back PAUL KRAMER, now Promotion Manager under CSD DON SMITH. Paul wrote and produced at KOVR before heading across town to be Creative Services Production Manager at FOX affil KTXL. The San Francisco State University grad also worked at American Zoetrope – yep the Coppola and Lucas film studio. What did he do there in his seven years? He did just about everything. And how did he get the moniker ‘The Hat’? By wearing the same one. Easy question. A big Well Dunne to you Paul.
Abilene, Texas is just down the Interstate from Sweetwater, home of the big rattlesnake roundup. Yeah, not on the Bucket List, but interesting nonetheless. When the brave and bold KAREN YARBROUGH (KTAB’s Creative leader) showed up at said event, just this last Friday, she showed more chutzpah than anyone else I know in TV when she skinned a rattlesnake…yes, she really skilled a rattlesnake. Perhaps a belt or the start of a great purse? Amazingly Well Dunne! Karen.
