What motivates us? Can motivation be instilled? Taught? Exactly what event or person or idea gets us up off the couch and into Action Mode? Each of us are our own little mushrooms, so it makes sense that each of us would be motivated by unique situations. KEVIN GORYL, a former promo pro who was Marketing Director at WXIX/Cincinnati as well as wrote and produced in DC, St Louis and for National Geographic recently shared what motivated him to make a change in his life. He founded an underwear company. Not just any underwear company, either. One with a mission – to eliminate the shortage of underwear at domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers around the country.  Donated clothing doesn’t include the basics…so Kevin and his wife Sara stepped in. This is how he explains it:

The idea for the company was inspired by the death of former WTTG Promo Manager TERRY WHEELOCK.  Terry passed away from complications due to alcoholism; after his death he was classified as an isolated alcoholic.  Terry and I were very close, we talked a few times per week even after he had moved to Hawaii.  His death was not only shocking to me, it left a huge hole in my heart.  On the way home from Terry’s memorial service I made a pledge to myself that I would giveback through volunteering and donating in his name.  While searching for things to donate I began to notice that underwear was always at the top of the list of items being asked for.  One day, while volunteering at The Brighton Center for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation I asked the Director why underwear were such a needed item.  She told me that nonprofits rely on donations for clothing and most people donate used clothes but, for obvious reasons, nonprofits don’t typically accept used underwear as a donation.  Many of the women at The Brighton Center are nonviolent offenders who are released straight from prison into the rehab center, these women arrive with just the clothes on their backs.

So Too Apparel was born. And, being a guy with a TV background, ‘the business’ has noticed; their fashions are going to be part of CBS’ new drama Training Day. Yep, even got an Instagram account for it (trainingday2017).

Want to be part of something that makes a real difference for those who aren’t as lucky as you? Next up for Kevin and Sara is expanding to a line of men’s underwear, with the goal of educating men about domestic violence. Donate just $1 on Kickstarter, and it will make a HUGE difference. It’s the sexiest underwear on the planet.

Starting Monday by doing good…no better way to start a week. Well Dunne! Kevin. And Well Dunne! everyone…

The American dream is still alive and well, at least in Cincinnati. Take KIMHEART MOEUNG. He’s the newest member of the WXIX creative team. Let’s let Marketing Director KEVIN GORYL tell you more:

We just welcomed Kimheart Moeung to our staff as our new Marketing Producer.  Kimheart is a recent graduate from Cincinnati State and came highly recommended from his professors.  Kimheart got thrown into the deep end on his first day and could now challenge Michael Phelps in the Butterfly!  We are in the process of launching 6 new syndicated shows; Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, Rachael Ray, Ricki Lake, Jeff Probst and Insider.  Plus we are launching a Saturday/Sunday Weekend News and extending our morning news an hour to 11am.  So, Kimheart has been thrown into a number of projects from day one and has risen to the occasion each time.  His first day was  7/27 and instead of meeting with HR, he was handed a camera and a camera car mount and sent out to shoot a few scenes of an image campaign. Kimheart is first generation Cambodian-American.  His parents, Samon (Monica) and Sokhorn (Kevin) came to the US in 1985 from Cambodia.  His girlfriend, Erin, and him had a celebratory dinner when he got the job, they’ve been dating for about two years.

Well Dunne! Kimheart and thanks Kevin.

Nothing keeps KPIX’s energetic Market Director of Communications, AKILAH BOLDEN-MONIFA, down for long, including surgery. She is back up and on the road to 100%. Extra best wishes to you. Akilah,

Ouch…not only is Dish Network getting tons of flack about dropping AMC, but they were just named the #1 worst place to work in the US by the Wall Street Journal.

It’s important to think about all things, including sanitation. That’s why the BBC story on Bill Gate’s Reinvent the Toilet Fair is worth a click.

Need to find out how to say “got a promotion” in Hawaiian. Because that’s what MELISSA MAPES would hear. The New KITI Creative Services Manager at Hearst’s Hawaiian station was a promo writer producer before getting the new title. She’s a Hawaiian girl hailing from the lovely windward side of Oahu, Kaneohe. They have one amazing malasada wagon over there…you need to check them out. Well Dunne! Melissa.

What with all the horrible severe weather happening nearby, no wonder JIM FARINACCI hasn’t been able to chat. Plus his new job – he’s been promoted to Promotion Manager at FOX affil WXIX in Cincinnati. Jim is working with a super CSD, KEVIN GORYL. No doubt Jim will check in when the weather settles down. Nonetheless, it’s a hearty Well Dunne! Jim.

There’s a certain art and talent required to do Topicals. Especially good, effective Topicals. Lots of discussion going around as to whether it’s a craft, a skill, a process or a talent. Or all of them.  CSD KEVIN GORYL at FOX in Cincinnati believes his new Topical writer producer has them equally. Already turning out wonderful spots is CAROLANN CRITTENDON, who learned how to edit on Avid in a mere two weeks. She’s been solo’ing since and everybody seems to be happy. This is Carolann’s first job in TV. The Chicago native has her degree from Miami in Ohio and was looking to get a job after graduation. She had applied for a  Coordinator slot with Kevin earlier, but it didn’t work out. He remembered her and called her back. After showing extraordinary promise (and picking just the right stories to push), Kevin welcomed her into the promo family. She’s a star who deserves a “one to watch” rating. Well Dunne! Carolann.  And you’ll have to watch her this time with your head turned…can NOT get this image to be upright. Seriously. This is what happens when you work at stations in markets where one is not allowed to touch equipment. Sorry Carolann…but you’re adorable even sideways.

Recipe for way more fun than you can imagine. Xbox360 + Netflix instant downloads + personal queue + friend’s queue = Yeah Baby!

BECKY SHORES has the best laugh. It just makes you feel good to hear it. Which means the folks at CBS affil WHNT in Huntsville are in for some great times – Becky is the new Creative Services Manager at the WHNT, the Local TV owned operation in The Rocket City. Becky is no stranger to the market…she lives there and was once CSD at NBC affil WAFF. The Iowa native seems very much at home and happy in the south. She’s a grad of Univ of Northern Iowa and has worked in Augusta GA as well as WOI in Des Moines. Well Dunne! Becky!

Let’s raise our glasses (or coffee mugs if you will) to celebrate the recent wedding of KEVIN GORYL to the lovely Sara. Kevin is CSD at WXIX in Cincinatti. Wonderful news, Kevin!

Know what whipped lightening is? It’s an idea we all should have had!

Think About This: "When we find ourselves looking at the world and saying, ‘There’s nothing out there for me,’ we should probably also look into our hearts and ask, ‘If there’s nothing out there, is there anything in here?’ We need to examine our inner dialogue to discover where we might be blocking the conscious energy flow, then remove the ego, step out of the way, and let the fire of the soul shine through us." ~ Deepak Chopra

The Queen City, aka Cincinnati, is just cooking along…especially at the Raycom FOX affiliate. CSD KEVIN GORYL has hired not one but two new creatives. Coming home from Cleveland is native son JIM FARINACCI, who’s producing and coordinating for the creative efforts. He’s been in the TV biz about 10 years and loves it. He and wife Kate are settling in. Producing for the sales folks is JASON BAGLEY, who is making the switch from News Production. He’ll be doing his creative thing alongside KAREN SMITH. Watch out and Well Dunne!

WONYA LUCAS is at it again…another fab promotion. This is a biggie…she’s been named executive vice president and chief operating officer for Discovery Channel and Science Channel. No doubt it’s her extensive marketing background they love so much…that and her go-get-‘em energy. Well Dunne! Wonya.

Congrats to DONNA WOLFE on her new position – VP of Production at NYC based Fuse. She has a background at MTV International and VH1. Coolness.

KEVIN GORYL is heading back to the Midwest…to Cincinnati actually. He’ll take his first shot at running a Creative Services Department when he steps behind the desk at Raycom’s FOX affil, WXIX. Kevin has spent time at KTVI in St. Louis (hometown high five), as well as two DC stations – WTTG and W*USA. Well Dunne! Kevin. Remember, the folks in Cincy put cinnamon in their chile, so be on the lookout for that.

The sudden, tragic death of 27 yr old JOHN BILLINGSLEY, who worked as a news photog at WLOS in Asheville, hit close to home – he was a friend of my son MATTHEW. A grad of Appalachian  State University in Boone, NC, John had worked at WLOS as well as a short stint as a photog in Memphis. But the Delta wasn’t the mountains, and John returned to the area that made him happy. He is greatly missed by those he worked with as well as his many, many friends.

Those of you who are so inclined, please remember KDKA CSD TINA VEON’s father as well as former WNCN Special Sales MARYANN BALBO’s father. Both are struggling with major health challenges.

Is your station doing Haiti relief outreach? If so, please share. Good ideas for a common cause is what networking is about, n’est-ce pas?
