Happy Halloween! Want to hear something scary? Hair-raising? Freightening all because it’s true? TV stations are the targets of crazy people right now, more than ever. Crazy and perhaps lethal people. In the last few days, there are at least two stations that have had to take drastic measures for their personnel’s safety. Up in Billings, KTVQ was the target of someone who left a suspicious box outside one of their entrances. The bomb squad blew up the box, which was covered in some strange writing and contained wires. The man responsible is now in psychiatric care. In Albuquerque, KOAT had two policemen stationed at their location because some nutjob was outside and could have been dangerous. All this in light of the mailed bombs. Out in Salinas, California, KSBW’s production van was set afire Friday night … on purpose. Arson is being investigated. One more time, with feeling…use your air. Use your talents. You can make people know things and understand them. Use those talents. The press is NOT the enemy of your viewers. Or your non-viewers. Or the population of your market. As you trick or treat today, remember there’s Godiva chocolate for the folks who send in their anti-hate, pro news actions. As they used to say on Hill Street Blues, stay safe out there. Don’t let Well Dunne! be a eulogy.
Think About This: “Non-violence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but refuse to hate him.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
August…the month when nature practically demands we slow down. Perfect for getting away, reading, painting, traveling – doing what recharges that inner spark. This August finds some of you in Africa, China and taking children and grandchildren to favorite places. It finds a lot of you dropping children off at colleges and experiencing sadness and joy and worry and nostalgia all at once. This August, as we watch the shadows shift ever so slightly, and the business we know change at the speed of light, let’s focus on the things that make us happy.
Art makes me happy and there’s no place like New Mexico where art is such a part of every moment. Our news today comes from KOAT in Albuquerque, where the incomparable CSD DEILIA RAY WILLIAMS has promoted MATT MONTOYA to be her new Assistant Creative Services Director. Matt’s a graphic artist, you see, which means the already great-looking KOAT marketing will have an even more exciting gleam to it. The New Mexico State grad got his start in TV at Vegas’ KLAS where he wrote, produced and edited. After being Senior Editor at Sun Media Productions he joined the Hearst ABC as Graphic Designer. Sounds like he’s in the right place with the right talent. Well Dunne! Matt.

Think About This: “I have faith in the truth, in its ability to find us…. If the truth often seems elusive when we seek it directly, perhaps it is some consolation that it also relentlessly reveals itself to us in our lives, our dreams, and the stories we tell one another.” ~ Oriah Mountain Dreamer
The American southwest is one of a kind. There’s nothing exactly like it, even though there are deserts that dwarf it in size and scope. But here in the states, our desert has brought forth art and history and mythology…mesas and vistas….saguaro cacti. Cowboys and westerns. The one thing missing (ok, there’s a few, but work with me here) is green. It’s pretty sparse and far between. Trees, flowers, grass…not so much. And rain. Well, you guys east of the Mississippi have had more than your fair share, while the west side of the river has been pretty dry. When BEN BATES takes the Multimedia Marketing Producer slot at Atlanta’s WXIA, he’ll be returning to the green that’s he’s missed while in Albuquerque as Assistant CSD for Hearst’s KOAT. Ben’s first TV job was at WVLA in Baton Rouge before he made the jump to KDVR in Denver. Both green. He then did a turn at Craftsy Network in the Mile High City before heading to DEILIA WILLIAMS’ creative team in The Q. A big thanks to him for pointing out that southern sweet tea is available at Chick-fil-A for those who crave it and are not in areas where it’s served most anywhere. Big Well Dunne! Ben.

The American Southwest is a one-of-a-kind place that fascinates. There are desserts around the globe, but the US Southwest is a lifestyle, a geography, a history and a myth all rolled together. So is the lower part of Louisiana. Bayous, language, history and humidity meld to imprint the people and form the basis of a unique locale. Some of us are lucky enough to experience one or the other in our creative odyssey. BEN BATES, on the other hand, is experiencing both. All the more material to pull from when the creative juices need oil. Ben is a Baton Rouge native who has just been tapped by the amazing DEILIA WILLIANS (admittedly top of the favorite list) to be her Assistant Creative Services Director of Hearst’s ABC affil in Albuquerque, New Mexico, KOAT. Ben began his TV journey at WVLA in Louisiana’s capital city where he was a Promo Producer. From there he headed west to Denver’s KDVR’s where he forged more promo chops. Like a lot of promo folks, he felt the need for a ‘news break’ and joined Denver-based Craftsy editing long form educational videos about…Crafts. See, the name says it all. Then, like promo folks do, TV called and Deilia was on the other end. He and his wife will be settling down in The Duke City right before Christmas, and they both promise to go to Santa Fe and see the farolitos, which give The City Different a feel akin to pure magic. Looking forward to getting to know him even better…as should you. Well Dunne! Ben!

From the ‘an oldie but a goodie’ file is MALLORY CONNELLY. Not that she’s old – definitely not…but she has been heading up Promotion for CBS affil KOLN in Lincoln Nebraska for the last year, so it’s not brand new news at this point. She’s Marketing Director of the Gray-owned operation who comes from the newsroom, having been a content producer for them at one time. Always good to have someone who knows what it takes to get a cast on the air…really knows what it takes. Mallory has a degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has a fabulous Irish name. Well Dunne! Ms. Connelly.

Austin and Albuquerque have more in common than both starting with the letter ‘A’. Both cool places to live, filled with artists and university students. Both named after historical figures, namely Stephen F Austin and the 8th Duke of Albuquerque, a Spanish nobleman. Both hosting Must-See events like Austin’s SXSW and Albuqueque’s balloon festival. Now we must add another similarity to the list: home to DOUG DONAHOO. Mr. D is leaving Hearst’s KOAT in Albuquerque where he’s been for the last several years and heading to FOX in Austin. Doug’s a Kansas guy and a Jayhawk through and through, so it will be an adventure living where Longhorns rule. Big Well Dunne! to you Doug.
Kudos to SHANNON DRIVER who is now Senior Vice President of Network Marketing and Creative Services for HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country. Well Dunne!
A bit of confusion on what day precisely is International Coffee Day. Google and its many sources have it listed as today (if you read this the last day of September 2015) or October 1. Of course it’s a PR move – this one by the London-based International Coffee Organization, a UN entity – but a very nice one indeed – especially if they can nail down the date. On tap for the day is a focus on international fair trade coffee as well as discounts and perhaps even free cups. Plan accordingly and celebrate coffee both days.
