THE WORD FROM PROMAX

Hi Well Dunne readers, I’m your intrepid guest blogger RAY ECKE coming to you live from the 2011 PromaxBDA Conference at the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan. Over the next three days I plan to fill you in on the comings and goings, the sessions, the parties, the networking chit-chat of this must-attend show for network promotion and branding industry.

As expected, the larger-than-expected crowd was bustling with energy, with hip attendees sporting their latest iPhones and iPads (Does anyone here use a PC?).

Things got off to heady start with the Media Leaders Summit moderated by ad executive/TV host DONNY DEUTSCH who interviewed heavyweights ED CARROLL, COO, Rainbow Entertainment Services; BOB DEBITETTO, President & GM of A&E and BIO Channel; CHRIS MCCUMBER, Co-President USA Network; MICHAEL SMITH, GM of Cooking Channel, and MATT STRAUSS, SVP & GM of Comcast Interactive Media. 

The session focused on each network challenges in building an identifiable brand in today’s crowded-multi-screen media landscape. The key all agreed was about developing content people want to see and build on it, such as USA Network has with “Monk” and “ Burn Notice” and AMC with “Mad Med” and “Breaking Bad.”

Following an inspired talk with artist SPENCER TUNICK; attendees packed inside the Grand Ballroom for the keynote with former Vice President and Current TV Chairman & Co-Founder AL GORE. His message was simple America’s creativity is a powerful force around the world. “Creativity is in America’s DNA.”

Tonight’s parties include the design studio Loyalkaspar, who recently did the rebrand for Current TV and are celebrating their 8th year in business, plus the official Promax BDA soiree at the Intrepid Air & Sea Museum.

It’s time for beer and battle stations.

Well Dunne for Tuesday October 27, 2009

Love it when the marketing folks get the nod to run the whole show. Well Dunne! goes out to MICHAEL SMITH, just named head of the new Cooking Channel. Official title is General Manager. Scripps is converting the Fine Living Network (FLN) to the Cooking Channel and is shifting Michael over from The Food Network, where he has been Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Creative Services. Before his 10+ years at Food Network, Michael was with Disney and CBS Network. He’s one smart guy – holds two sheepskins: undergrad in biz from Stanford and an MBA from Berkeley. Impressive. Glad to see such a great guy move upward! Let’s hear it for him one more time – Well Dunne! Michael.

That means his slot at Food will be open.

Condolences to GREG RANDO, #2 Creative at FOX’s KTVU in Oakland, on the sudden death of his mother. Thoughts and prayers to you, Greg.
