As was the case with the amazing TV people in Houston, the Florida TV pros stepped up and did epic work covering Irma. They still are. The internet allows us to see their news on-air, which is a modern miracle imo. The Florida, Georgia, South Carolina markets all shone. So many stories…so many deserving our attention and applause. So let’s start and keep adding to the honor role. And interest role, since we’re starting with blatant WDT promotion.
Well Dunne! Talent’s DARYN JOHNSON is a TV director for Fox’s WTVT in Tampa and was making it all happen on the air while sleeping in an office at the station on West Kennedy. Well Dunne! Talent’s SEAN CALDWELL headed to Atlanta and Irma followed him up I-75. An Atlanta resident already, RICH VANSLYKE read copy for Florida markets while preparing to have the hurricane mess with his town. Big-voiced MITCH PHILLIPS kept his sense of humor from the Fort Lauderdale area. All are safe.
In Jacksonville, WJXT’s Meteorologist JOHN GAUGHAN (pronounced Gone) did an A+ job on Irma in the Jax market. Promo that man with “GAUGHAN WITH THE WIND”. (Sorry SHERRY CARPENTER…had to use that.)
Creative “architect” STAN MELTON heads up DC’s ABC affil WJLA…and he recently teamed up with STEPHEN ARNOLD and his music, using the SAM cut “Waking Up My Day” for the station’s American Idol Front of the Line contest. The cut is part of the new “Ready” promo package. Well Dunne! Stan Stephen and CHAD COOK, VP of Creative for SAM.

With all eyes on Florida and Irma, it seems a little shallow to talk about people with new jobs in TV marketing. But in reality, it’s not. A job is crucial…even though one is cautioned not to let it be part of ‘who you are – it is. A good job can make life better. A bad job can make even the happiest individual miserable. So while we watch the hurricane and send wishes and prayers to all the Floridians…to the friends and colleagues who are helping by broadcasting much needed information…we’ll carry on. Turn the spotlight on those whose smiles and hopes are fresh and whose future is rainbow hued.
KENNY LAWRENCE is now President and GM of Nexstar’s WJHL, in Johnson City, Tennessee. At one time, he was a marketing pro with CBS TV Distribution and at CBS Atlanta. He announced that he’s hired STEVEN WALLACE as his new CSD, so one surmises Steve must have a killer reel and all. Mr. W will be coming to WJHL from ABC affil WTVQ in lovely Lexington, Kentucky. Steven got his promo chops at WFAA in Big D…one of the best. He’s done work with agencies, etc. Well Dunne! Steven. Thanks Kenny.
Job Alert – Supervising Producer Creative Services KTLA LA
Zello is an app that let’s you use your cell as a walkie-talkie. It was indispensible during Harvey in Houston so you Florida peeps might want to consider downloading it now. Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS, who is in the Fort Lauderdale area, is mpvoice for those who want to connect.
Going to be a long weekend…no matter where you are. Fires all over the west…dust storm in Phoenix, Houston still reeling, and there are 2 Atlantic Ocean hurricanes. God bless each and every…xo
Think About This: “And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through – how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” ~ Haruki Murakami

Let’s jump into the WayBack Machine for a moment…revisit 2000’s presidential election. Remember how Florida played a huge part in the outcome? The hanging chad thing? Yeah. Didn’t you want Florida to, among a mile-long list of other things, have a good PR person to help with getting the story sorted? Many newsies did. OK, jump out – History moment over. Now let’s take a gander at the new Outreach and Media Manager at Miami-Dade County Elections Department in, as the title says, Miami. Cue ROBERT RODRIGUEZ. Since Florida is a key voting state, and Miami is the second largest Florida city in population, it’s very reassuring to know Robert will have his eye on things. He knows his stuff and his background includes being Promo Manager at LA’s FOX stations, KTTV and KCOP, and producing for WSMV in Miami. He’s also done government PR for the Property Appraiser down at the tip of the Sunshine State. Robert, Well Dunne!
Will JOHN OLIVER’s folks back off roasting WCBS promos now that LEE GROSSMAN has been promoted? Lee’s been EP and Production Manager at the NYC flagship of the Tiffany Network, and the promos have been part of a bit on HBO’s Last Week Tonight. National publicity is a good thing. Lee has worked his way up the WCBS creative ladder, starting right out of Towson U as an AP and then writer/producer, EP and Production Manager and now Director, On-Air Promotion and Marketing CBS Television Stations. He’ll stay on at WCBS but added leading the CBS CSD’s coast to coast. He’s got a great bunch of talent to lead. Well Dunne! Lee.
All clear and all is well for Well Dunne! Talent’s deep-voiced MITCH PHILLIPS, who avoided any real problems from Hurricane Matthew. He’s just south of Palm Beach (or can it be considered just north of Miami?).

Showtime’s HAPPYish wraps up this Sunday, and the show had the good taste to tap Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS to be part of it. Mitch’s deep, amazing voice will be heard doing the VO for a client pitch involving a big Wall Street firm. The series has an ad agency base, so it’s really a lot of fun for most of ya’ll. Think Mad Men without the old fashioned social mores. Set your recorders for the 9:30 Eastern show. Well Dunne! Mitch.
Mitch does work for NHL Net, which leads to…the talented folks at Undefined Creative who did a motion design campaign rolling out a statistical analysis platform. Undefined Creative delivered 19 different animations designed to leverage SAP® Predictive Analytics software. SAP Predictive Analytics allows fans, broadcasters and media around the world to analyze official League, team and player statistics via a more comprehensive, interactive and personalized interface. Well Dunne!

Catching up with some goings on up north, like in Wisconsin where LINDA HART took the Promo Manager slot at Madison’s Fox affil. She had been in the Twin Cities CW operation, WUCW. Both stations are owned by Sinclair. The University of St. Thomas grad (not the one in the Caribbean, the one in the Minneapolis-St Paul area) began her TV career in the Quad Cities. Well Dunne! Linda.
Taking the empty slot at WUCW is CHRIS ILLER, who was down in Springfield, MO heading up the Programming and creative at KRBK. Chris is a Florida guy who has spent time doing marketing magic in some fascinating places, like Albuquerque, Orlando and now Minneapolis. Well Dunne! Chris.

Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH “Cookie” PHILLIPS asked for a moment to say thank to some great folks. So here it goes: “It was exactly a month ago that I was honored to receive the award for best Promo Demo Reel at the Voice Arts Awards at the Museum of the moving Image in NYC. And like a great hamburger, I am still savoring the flavor as if it were a few hours ago. It was as wonderful as it was a complete shock and surprise to be honored by a diverse group of respected and accomplished peers and colleagues in the Voiceover and Voice Acting community. And even though I’ve been a long time working voice actor, I was so very moved by the words of kindness, positivity and support from so many fellow actors, representatives and producers folks who took the time to introduce and chat. My sincerest thanks to Joan Baker, Rudy Gaskins, Steve Ulrich and many others for creating and staging this beautiful showcase recognizing voice talent worldwide for their contributions and performances."

CHRIS SLOAN’s 2C Media has named an award-winning talent as their Creative Director. Let’s hear it for BRIAN ELOE, who will be heading to Miami after being Creative Director of Impossible. Brian started as an editor at first Hallmark then Starz and has let his inventive talent grow with each slot and promotion. PAUL VINCENT is the latest addition to LARRY KELLOGG’s creative team at NBC’s KRCA in Sacramento. Paul had been over at Salt Lake City’s ABC affiliate, KTVX. Well Dunne! Paul.

Staying in Florida, especially this time of the year, is not too shabby. Staying on the Gulf Coast is even better. What lucky writer producer gets to do this, as well as going to work for a great CSD? If you answered SHANDRA JACKSON-BOHLEY, then give yourself a gold star. Shandra is now doing that creative thing for LARRY DOLYE at Media General’s flagship WFLA, which literally sits right on the water in downtown Tampa. True, the water isn’t the Gulf, it’s the Hillsborough River, and thanks for pointing that out. Back to Shandra, who has made the switch from her writer producer slot at WBBH/WZVN in Ft. Myers, just down 75. Shandra has worked in Florida in West Palm at WPEC, in Miami at NBC6 and even for the City of Coral Gables. Well Dunne! Shandra.
Did anybody down in Miami score a Panthers yarmulke? The giveaway was a PR nightmare for the hockey team, but it made me realize no wardrobe is complete or chic without one. And yes, that IS indeed Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS whose booming pipes make the game even more festive.
Well Dunne! to two promo writers who just got named nominees for the Writers Guild of America Awards for On-Air Promotion. Let’s hear it for ANNE DE VEGA of CBS, nominated for her work on CSI Promos. And for 19 year veteran JENNIFER KAAS for her work on NBC News promos.

Repotting yourself is good for plants and good for people. One such new repotting involves long-time pro JOE FALKNER. He’s repotting himself as division manager for Megatrax Production Music, specifically their new custom music venture called Aircast Production. He gets to stay in Dallas. Prior to this switch, Joe was with Stephen Arnold Music for about 17 years. Well Dunne! Joe.
For those South Florida hockey fans, listen up! Literally. When you head to a Florida Panther’s home game (one coming up Thursday) the announcer you’ll hear in the stadium is Well Dunne!Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS. Only your heart can see beyond memory’s horizon.” ~ Neale Donald Walsch
The latest issue of Southwest Airline’s Spirit Magazine has a story on Jackson, MS and it sounds like a great place – gorgeous old antebellum architecture and, this time of year, the capital of Mississippi is dripping in gorgeous flowers. PURVIS PARKER thinks it’s a great spot, too. He’s accepted the Creative Services Director slot at FOX affil WDBD. The Jackson Broadcasting owned station enticed Purvis to come aboard from his slot at a regional production house. Yep, he’s a southerner from Batesville, MS. Well Dunne! Purvis. You’re aboard just in time for GLEE’s return.
LAUREN LoFRISCO (that’s her in the picture there) is literally iN DEMAND. She’s just joined the cable net and they must have really wanted her – they created the position of SVP of Affiliate Marketing just for the University of Pittsburgh grad. She makes the switch from Time Warner Cable where she was Group VP of Marketing. She’s also worked at HBO and is based in The Big Apple. Well Dunne! Lauren.
Speaking of cable…any of you have The Cable Show on your dance card? GREAT! Let me know. I’m working with the great folks at EXTRA EXTRA who publish a kick-it magazine on site, which this year is LA. Grab me on Facebook or LinkedIn and sign up for the Twitter thing, too!
Bravo to JENNIFER DeGUZMAN. She’s now the VP of Bravo Communications at Bravo Media. She’s already on the job after being with MTV Nets for 16 years. Wow…sounds like a new adventure for her. Well Dunne! Jennifer. See you at NCTA.
For those of you in South Florida…tonight at 8, get yourself over to the Rock-n-Roll Shootout at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Sure, it’s a school night, but you’ll get to enjoy emcee MITCH PHILLIPS. He is, indeed, a Well Dunne! Talent.

First day of March was the first day that MICHAEL LEACH was in his new job. Timing is such a nice thing. Mr. Michael had been Ass’t Creative Services Director at Hearst’s Winston-Salem NC NBC affil, WXII under MARK STRAND. Now Michael is heading the department and has all the enthusiasm you can imagine. The native New Yorker has worked in Rochester as a writer producer for WROC/WUHF before heading to the beautiful mid-NC market which includes the world famous furniture mart. He loves the NC environ, but still isn’t sure about how to be less than an enthusiastic basketball fan in an area where basketball is just short of religion. Well Dunne! Michael.
HGTV’s Design Star seems to have had a very successful promo campaign…totally online.
Luis Vitton has always been overly proud of that logo. Now, that brand protection is going to court and taking on Hyundai’s Super Bowl commercial where they put the Vitton look on a basketball. Silly lawsuit or good brand practice?
In LA? Buy an LA Times this am…check out page 3 of the Biz Section. Oh, look. Well Dunne! Talent.
Mercedes Benz has a new voice for their brand. Mad Men’s JON HAMM.
Duh – Oscars are coming up. Friday AM, don’t forget to tune into Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS radio show and hear an hour of fun and talk about entertainment. His sidekick on Fridays is a lady with a great laugh who calls herself McGEE. Hmmmm…she sounds a lot like KATE BACON.

You all know that KIRO in Seattle has an opening for a CSD. Well, seems the former CSD there, CARLOS ESPINOZA, has switched from TV to film. It’s a very exciting move. About two years ago, the crew was in town to shoot Battle for Seattle, staring CHARLIZE THERON and WOODY HARRELSON. The producers needed some footage, called Carlos and that, as they say, is the beginning of a new career opportunity for Carlos. This tale supports several truths: 1 – Networking can change your life. 2 – All the talents and skills involved in doing TV promo are exactly the kind of talents and skills filmmakers need, so more cross hiring should happen, and 3 – If your station phone system sucks, opportunity won’t reach you. Enjoy working with Mary Aloe’s folks, Carlos. And Well Dunne!
Well Dunne’s MITCH PHILLIPS got a great write-up just recently. Cool. For those of you who want to enjoy some interesting, entertaining and fun talk…the way only good radio can…tune into Mitch’s morning show. Eastern time 9-10a. Click here and, btw, I might be on Monday. Yep, I just might…
Any thoughts on the Leno/Conan moves? THE WRAP seems particularly honest in its assessment. Just sayin’.

Hiring two creative people in one month…that’s amazing in today’s media market, but it’s exactly what happened at Cox’s ABC afil WFTV in Orlando. The Creative Services Dept grew when they grabbed ERIKA RICHARDSON out of the newsroom to do the night side topical producing. Excellent. And they added CHRIS CRABTREE to be Promotion Producer. He makes the switch from Orlando’s FOX affiliate. Both were on board for Sweeps. Thanks to Promotion Manager ERIN MARTIN for the update. Well Dunne! Everybody.
In Times Square and need wifi? Thank Yahoo for it. Hey, what ever happened to the idea of having entire cities offering wifi? Loved that concept.
Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS has a new website and it’s smokin’. VERY nice. You should check it out. Yeah, that’s Mitch who keeps saying ‘Poppa’s in the house” on those Poppa John’s Pizza spots that seem to run all the time.
Think About this: "It’s been proven that the only effective way to deal with fear is to walk through it, through the pain that accompanies doing something you’re afraid to do. It takes courage to fulfill your commitments, courage to stay on track, courage to follow your dreams, courage to reach your goals, and courage to walk through your fear. Remember, reaching goals is not so much about doing big things when the feeling hits you; it’s more about doing little things every day that move you toward your dream. It’s about staying steady and on course." ~ Francine Ward
