You know how important networking is. No need to re-sing that chorus. But with the time crunches we all face, finding ways to perhaps do more networking with less effort. Perhaps streamline some portion of your networking profile. Then you should get to know TAMMY PHILLIPS. She’s the new Senior Corporate Recruiter for Nexstar, focusing on News and Marketing. She’ll be looking for great talent for all the Nexstar chain, and with that many stations, she’s someone to know. Before the Nexstar job, she had recruited for Raycom. The Arkansas State grad knows a lot about the biz, having worked news as Producer, EP and News Director. Well Dunne! Tammy.
While on the subject of recruiting and the like, let’s throw out the idea that job titles today might need some rethinking. Here’s where your marketing skills can be of great value. Perhaps walking folks through the steps of How To Be Clear and Say What You Mean might help alleviate some of the convoluted titles that muddy what the job really entails. Throwing all the duties one does in today’s marketing world is not a good idea. If you have to extend the title to another line on the biz card, or if you look at the title and are confused, then time to revert to the time-honored ways we used to identify Managers, Directors, VPs and the like. And I’d like to discuss the Success Manager title with the person who dreamed that up.

It’s a double header. Not one but two marketing pros were tapped for overall station management slots while most of us were asleep. Great news no matter what. Let’s start with JEFF HOLUB who is now the Station Manager for WGCL, Meredith’s CBS in Atlanta, and WPCH. He’s been the CSD there and came after a long and successful run handling creative at FOX in the San Francisco market, legendary KTVU. That’s him in the picture. He sounded more smiley this morning. Our twofer is SCOTT CHASTAIN, who many of you know from his time as EVP of Affiliate Marketing and Development at NBC. He’s headed to Lansing where he’ll be VP and GM for the CBS and ABC affils, WLNS and WLAJ respectively. Kudos to Nexstar to have the foresight to see that marketing people know how to run a station, know how to handle people, know how to make sales sing and are like Lake Wobegon children – above average. Scott is a Texas Aggie who has done marketing for stations in New Orleans (WDSU), WXII in Winston-Salem and KBTX in Bryan, TX. A big Well Dunne! Scott.
Marketing people don’t get the respect they so deserve and are rarely considered to run stations, which is a major disappointment. The question asked so often is “Why do so many people leave the TV marketing stations-side biz?” Well, there’s no upward mobility by and large. Put in the promo box, nobody asks how many promos one can oversee, write and produce before burn out sets in. Silly moi, I was always under the impression that the trade group was supposed to elevate the role of marketing and creative. Nope. Not even.

You would think that with a name like Sinclair, you would work for Sinclair, right? I mean, a TV person and all that. But no…SINCLAIR WALKER works for Nexstar. Their Waco, TX operation to be precise. Sinclair is the new CSD at KWKT, Fox in Steve Martin’s hometown. Sinclair had been Creative Services Assistant at the station, so his promotion is well deserved. Sinclair is a Texas Longhorn and worked editing and producing in Tyler. How about a rousing Texas Well Dunne! Sinclair.

REX MAIN is a great name. Rex means king. Main is, of course, the top. Rex Main is a name you use to get attention. And this particular Rex is adding to the creative output at Nexstar’s ABC affiliate in Augusta, GA, WJBF. Yes, the golf mecca of the world (sorry Scotland, but you have no trees…). Rex is working with CSD CHUCK SPRUILL, who’s a great judge of talent. Rex has spent time in two of the most beautiful places, working in promo of course. He’s been at KREX in Grand Junction, Colorado as CSD as well as in the rose city, Tyler, Texas as CSD for KETK. His prodco has a great name as well: Main Video Productions. What’s in a name? Between everybody having the flu, the cold-as-a-brass-bra weather, the ridiculous upgrades demanded all at once, and one too many conference calls/corporate deadlines/bright ideas…well TGIF people. T.G.I.F. Want to know a guy (did that sound Chicago-ese?) who is bright, witty and funny? And he does TV promo? Come on down DAVID MOTT, a Florida guy who is in the mountains of West Virginia doing a job that elicits the response ‘Sweet!’. He’s Promo Manager at Nexstar’s WVNS. What a lovely ‘find’… because creatives who don’t possess wit, intelligence and talent plus a sense of humor are, well, let’s just leave it at that.
