Well, at least you weren’t in Atlanta’s traffic nightmare. That’s something to be very thankful for, indeed. LARRY WATZMAN, Director of Marketing and Creative Services at Gannett’s WXIA in the Big A hunkered down for the night on an air mattress, which is a couple of hundred steps above freezing in your car sans salle de bain.

Meanwhile, to the west, in Des Moines, IA, more used to ice, snow and resultant traffic, comes word that PETER ZEMANSKY is now the #2 man at Hearst’s KCCI. CSD NICK ALLARD is thrilled with him and promoted him from a writing and producing slot. Peter a Drake grad who’s interned at NBC News in DC as well as been a print reporter. Well Dunne! Peter.

Also at KCCI, taking the writer producer slot Peter left vacant is new-to-the-biz MARK PETERSON. Mark is an Iowa State U grad and an Iowa native. Love to see the start of a creative career. Well Dunne! Mr. P.

Did you ever hear a name and then picture what a person named that name would look like? Then when you see that person, they look like what you thought they would?  Happened with a very talented guy named PETER ZEMANSKY, who is the latest member of KCCI’s creative team. KCCI being the  Hearst-owned CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa. KCCI CSD NICK ALLARD said Peter proved timing is everything…the right person, right there, at the right time. Peter interned at the station and worked his way up from there to Production Assistant to Director and was looking for a great new slot when – voila – Nick was on the hunt for a writer producer. Match – game – set.  The Butler grad has always been involved in video production, so there’s great things on the horizon up KCCI way. Well Dunne! Peter.

It’s the perfect situation. Getting a great new job, more money and NOT having to shove your stuff into boxes while looking for a new place to live. That’s the situation for Central Florida’s STEVE RIFKIN, who has been promoted by the Hearst folks and is now the Creative Services Director at NBC affiliate WESH in Orlando. Steve has been at the CW there, WKCF, so he’s on top of the market, etc. The upper NY state native is an Indiana State U grad who has worked at Meredith’s WNEM in Michigan and CBS in Knoxville (where he became a Tennessee Vols football fan). Yep, he sounds just thrilled by the new slot and that, as they say, is a very good thing. Well Dunne! Steve.

Heading to Vegas is KEVIN O’NEAL and family. Kevin is the newly named Sr. Writer Producer for CSD JIM KOONCE at  ABC affil KNTV in Las Vegas. He’s making the switch from being CSD at FOX28 (WSJV for those into calls) in South Bend, Indiana. Mr Kevin has also managed the creative efforts of the CBS/FOX duop KMEG/KPTH Sioux City, Iowa and CBS affil KRCG in Columbia, MO.  Yes, he’s never had a job in the lovely Southwest, but he did study at University of Houston, which Texans say is in the Southwest but really isn’t, since their humidity is rather, well, high. Know Kevin will love desert living. He’ll be there about mid-October. Great big Well Dunne! Kevin.

OH RATZ…I made a mistake. You know yesterday when I told you about NICK ALLARD looking for a newscast director for KCCI in Des Moines? Well, it’s a CBS affil. Yep, Columbia Broadcasting System station. Part of the Eye network.  Not affiliated with any other network. So keep saying KCCI is CBS…KCCI is CBS…KCCI is CBS….carry on.

Think About This: "The power of losing control is about learning how to let go of trying to control the uncontrollable outcomes and circumstances in our lives. To do anything else is a blueprint for living a life that is driven by stress, fear, and disappointment. I’m not suggesting that we shouldn’t do everything we can to make our dreams and desires come true. But letting go of the illusion that we have complete control over our outcomes will free us from our fears, allow us to bring more of ourselves to the work we need to do, and enable us to find happiness and power no matter what life brings our way."

Been so slammed, just now getting around to the updates from NBC’s KXAS in Dallas. Thanks to VP Creative GARY WANN for this:

We’ve been hard at work this summer looking for the right people to bring on to our team, and it’s paid off. MATT HOPKINS comes to the NBC5 Marketing Department as Senior Designer. Matt was already in house with the NBC Owned Artworks, the station groups internal resource for News and other graphics. ARUS MANNING now has to drive 5 minutes longer than usual to work, leaving CBS’s KTVT and my good pal DAVID HERSHEY… who made me buy him lunch after Arus made the jump. Arus was a designer and wanted to stretch his creative muscles, joining us as a Promo Producer/Editor. Arus and I worked together at the big 1-1 before I made my way to KPRC in Houston. JOEY FRANCKS, a former CSD and long time producer, comes to Dallas from KTEN in Sherman-Dennison as our Prime-Time Promotion Producer. ADRIN DOMINGUEZ won’t even have to leave his edit bay! Adrian joins us from our sister station KXTX Telemundo as Promo Shooter/Editor. The kind folks from CH 39 are letting us do some office swapping so that Adrian can keep his current digs.

Well Dunne! Matt, Arus, Joey Adrin and a big thanks to Gary for sharing.

Job Alert – Des Moines’ CBS affil KCCI rarely ever has an opening. Yeah, one of those places…a super operation. Anyway, there’s an opening now for someone to direct newscasts. You know – take camera 3, etc. The whole point is if you know of someone who would want to be part of the kind of station we wish they all are…seek out CSD and Ops man NICK ALLARD and he’ll take it from there.

Think About This: What if you, like the Buddha Siddhartha, suddenly realized that the whole world you’d invested in was no more than a lovely theatrical stage meant to distract your from true life? What then? Would you, like Jim Carey in ‘The Truman Show” have the courage to walk off the set? Or like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix’ swallow the blue pill?"

Things are really going to rock at Hearst’s KCCI in Des Moines. Yep…the CBS affiliate in Iowa’s capital now has a new Promotion Manager to join brand-new CSD NICK ALLARD, who is celebrating his first week on the job. Nick was on the hunt for a writer producer (you all saw that job posting here) and when he looked around, he saw what a bang-up job the commercial producer was doing over in the Sales Department. The rest is history, as they say and now SEAN WILSON is hard at work with Nick making promos. A local guy who returned to Iowa after going to recording school in Los Angeles, Sean has the patina of having worked in News as both a news photog, editor and morning show producer. He also put in four years doing Topicals before making the switch to commercial production (tempted in part by daytime work hours and holidays with his wife), which all means the news people are smiling at the latest development. Sean is also a guitarist with the group North of Grand. A triple threat guy, he also sings and writes songs. Can’t wait to see what hotness results in these two getting together. Well Dunne! Sean.

If you love tennis, golf, bicycling, walking along the ocean, nice people, amazing weather and pelicans, then Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. is right up your alley.  PVB, as it is known to the locals, is just north of Ste. Augustine, America’s oldest city. PVB is also part of the Jacksonville FL market. I mention it because Jacksonville’s got a new resident who is a pro at TV marketing. Put out the welcome mat for SHERRY CARPTENTER, the new Creative Services Director at Post Newsweek’s WJXT. Sherry is arriving in the palm tree laden town just in time to enjoy the 80 degree days. Back in Pittsburgh, where she had been CSD at WTAE, the high will reach somewhere in the low 30;s…and there is snow. Good exchange.  Ms. Sherry has done that TV promo thing in northern markets like Cincinnati and Cleveland. She’s going to LOVE the south. She hails from Indiana, Pennsylvania, home to Well Dunne! Talent’s KELLY PIDGEON. Coincidence? There are no coincidences…it all means something.  Well Dunne! Sherry.

Job Alert: NICK ALLARD needs a promo producer. Here’s the deets:
If your idea of effective news promotion starts with a slow push in on talent – please, skip to the next ad.

If you think that social media is just a flash in the pan, you’ll probably want to look somewhere else.

And, if you think that there’s an “I” in teamwork, well, quite frankly, you need to learn how to spell!

If you’re ready, however, to be a part of a department that is a true creative team and have proven that you work and think outside of the box, please read on!  It just might be your time to shine!
KCCI-TV, a Hearst Television station and CBS affiliate in Des Moines, IA, has an immediate opening for its next creative promotion superstar.  This promo powerhouse should be an extremely creative and energetic promotion writer/producer with a strong video skill set and a passion for news.  After all, you will be part of the team responsible for aggressively promoting Des Moines’ #1 News product and its station programming.
You must be able to take a spot from concept to air (script writing, field and studio shooting, non-linear editing and post production.) You will be working with the creative and talented staff at KCCI to produce station image spots, news and programming tune-in spots, non-traditional news topicals and other station production as needed.

Ideally, you will have 2-3 years of broadcast experience in either news or advertising.  You must have strong Adobe CS skills – After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere is an absolute must.  3-D compositing and other graphic design experience is a huge plus. You must have a creative flair, be able to multi-task and be able to work effectively under tight deadlines.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to take your career to the next level?

Just in time for the political action to begin in Iowa…that’s the timing for NICK ALLARD’s move to Des Moines. He’ll be the new CSD of Hearst’s CBS affil in Iowa’s capital, KCCI. The politics will heat up as the Iowa primary approaches, but Nick will be at home in his new office by then. His first day will be March 7. Nick is leaving his post as Promotion Manager at Local TV’s WICI, FOX in Milwaukee on Feb 25 to heard south.  Des Moines is a place that is as close to home as Nick can get, since it’s where his wife went to school and there are family and friends on every corner, so to speak. The little Allards will be going to some of the best schools in the country, so it’s all extra good. Mr. A, who was born in Great Britain and has lived on both sides of the pond (including in New Hampshire) is as happy as can be. Great news for one of the really good guys. Well Dunne! Nick.

No rushing for his old job, tho. But here’s a job alert – two actually. Art Director at KDVR in Denver. That’s a FOX affil. And another FOX affil KSTU in Salt Lake needs a news promo producer.
