Denver and San Diego seem like very different places with little in common. Where Denver, the Mile High city, boasts winter sports and incredible mountains, San Diego is Oceanside with the best climate in the country. Yet both are vibrant, young-people towns swimming in high tech and entrepreneurs. They’re also two markets that JILLIAN OPPEGARD has on her resume, what with her new job and all.  The end of February, Jillian is going to KGTV, the Scripps ABC operation in SD to be the Marketing Manager. She’s been in Denver at CBS’s KCNC as Senior Creative Services Producer and considers Centennial, Colorado home, even though she was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She is gonna love working with KGTV’s PHIL KRAFT – they both report to LEILA STILLWELL. Thanks to Marshall Advertising’s LAUREN RIDGLEY for the scoop. Big Well Dunne! Jillian.

Well Dunne! to the entire WDAM TV family who did Pine Belt Strong, a full day telethon to raise money for the victims of the devastating tornadoes that hit the Hattisburg, Laurel Mississippi area.  Marketing Director ERIK SNELL announced they raised $200,000 as of 8 pm (when this was written) but there’s still three hours to go. Well Dunne! generous and caring Mississippi citizens.

It’s Groundhog Day as you know, so, if you haven’t decided to make it a great day, then at least muddle through and watch Bill Murray so you can lighten up.

Think About This: “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” ― John Lennon

If one is good, and two is twice as good, then three is over the moon. Three is the magic number for WJXT’s CSD SHERRY CARPENTER, who has added some fab talent to her team in Jacksonville. We’ll let her and her new hires take over (I’ll put my feet up and fix a margarita today…bonus!):

BRANDON LINK: “I hail from WVVA! A station tucked away in Southern WV. I went from Master control, Commercial producer to Promotion manager in a little under 2 years. Before I stumbled into TV, I played football for the Pittsburgh Power in the AFL (Arena football league). I am originally from Cumberland, MD. I’ve been playing guitar for 12 years, and I have a 4 yr old black lab/pit mix named Nina! I’m probably the biggest/scariest looking Promotion Producer in the country!”  (Take what you like from that. Haha.)

STUART BOSLOW is the new Executive Producer of a daily talk and entertainment show on WJXT, launching later this year. Stuart joined the station from Dallas, where he launched a talk and lifestyle show at KTXD. Previously he was Senior Special Projects Producer at KTVT.

Just hired today, as in Tuesday! RYAN DOLBY was our intern, and was hired to help support production of 3 weekly Jacksonville Jaguars shows. As the official station of our NFL Franchise team, folks in creative services help produce the coaches show, Everbank Jaguars Gameday, and Jaguars All Access.  Ryan has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Concentration in production from University of North Florida.

Job Alert – Sherry and Stuart are working frantically to hire 7 more people– co-hosts, MMJ’s, producers, bookers and tech support. Check out Graham Media’s WJXT’s job postings.

Sincere condolences to PHIL KRAFT, Senior Creative Producer for KGTV in San Diego, on the loss of his Grandmother.

EXCELLENT read…BILL HARTNETT’s blog entitled Social TV Grows Up and Gets Real.

Changes are as hot as the temps…tomorrow we tell about the new CSD at WNCN in Raleigh and have great news about a favorite with a syndicated show. And the already promised details on the lovely new KXAN CSD will be forthcoming. Plus a real find for DAVID HERSHEY at KTVT. Come back – bring salt.

Oh, this is the 1625th post of WDT’s focus on the people of TV marketing. How fast the children grow…

When in search of a promo producer, there’s a lot of talent to be found in news editing bays in your very own newsrooms. PHIL KRAFT, who is crafting promo gold for KGTV under CSD STAN MELTON JR in San Diego is one such former news editor. RANDAL GAGE, CSD for Hearst’s ABC affil, KOCO, in Oklahoma City took the same clever route to solve his open producer slot and has brought JESSICA CHALKER out of the WFAA Dallas news editing booths to his operation. Jessica is a grad of North Texas in Denton, which is conveniently on I-35 north from Dallas to OKC. She’s worked at several I-35 markets, like Austin and Waco where she was a photog and editor. Excellent news all round. Well Dunne! Jessica.

Wasn’t that the best…several days when we all caught our breaths, took time to realize our extraordinary lives are gifts…when we thought of those we love and might have gotten to spend time with them…when we smiled and laughed and let happiness share our spaces. May your holiday have been restful and energizing and most simply marvelous.

Speaking of most simply marvelous, one of the best people in the biz, and someone who is considered part of the family, has a new adventure before him. PHIL KRAFT is going to San Diego.  He’ll be the Sr. Writer Producer for Scripps’ KGTV working with both CSD STAN MELTON JR and Promo Manager LEILA STILLWELL at the ABC affiliate. Phil will be sadly leaving WJLA in DC, but he is rather happy to depart winter. A warm weather man by nature, Miami is where he grew up. He’s been at WJLA twice (loves it that much) as well as KPIX in San Francisco, KTVT in DFW, WFTV in Orlando, and WCNC in Charlotte where he began his Promo life, rescued from editing news. He and Stan are going to rekindle an old work relationship….Stan was his boss at WJLA at one time. The cross country adventure is on…and we’re sending Phil all the best wishes for his new job and many a Well Dunne!

Job Alert – Promo Pro BONNIE WOOD and WJLA are going to need to replace Phil, so all you writer producers out there, you know what to do now.

Job Alert – Senior Writer/Producer WFTV Orlando

Ah, the beginning of a new week. For ZOHRA ALNOOR, it’s the beginning of a new chapter in her TV career. She’ll be walking through the doors of ABC affil WJLA in suburban DC to take on the role of Producer for the wonderful BONNIE WOOD, who’s wrangling the department at the Sinclair outlet. Zohra has been over at FOX in DC doing production duties for the last three years…and she interned there as her first TV job after getting her sheepskin from George Mason U. In her new role, she’ll be working with the one and only producer PHIL KRAFT, who knows how to edit (and teach editing) better than anybody. Well Dunne! Zohra. Proud of ya!

Know what a coffee nap is? It’s the best way to get fully alert and it only takes 20 minutes. No kidding…it’s a coffee nap and every creative needs to lobby for them immediately. Backed up by science, thank you.

DC’s WUSA is mourning the loss of an amazing lady, DOREA HICKS. She was the executive assistant for 6 GM’s over 42 years at the station, beginning in 1968. She saw the station go from the Mad Men days to online. She was the go-to person who knew absolutely everything, and took joy in every day. Anyone who knew her and worked with her will miss her very much.

WJLA’s PHIL KRAFT is in Haiti this week. Polishing his French is just one of the many things he’s doing. I hope he brings back some artwork.

Heading back east is PHIL KRAFT, who’s returning to DC and to WJLA, where he at one time worked in the promotion department. Yes, he’ll be right at home with BONNIE WOOD and her creative crew at the ABC affiliate, although he hates leaving uber-creative DAVID HERSHEY and his award-winning team at KTVT in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Phil grew up in Miami but his family seems to have all settled around the nation’s capital, so he’s not going to be spending all his money on plane tickets. Let’s all send Mr. K a great big Well Dunne!

BETHANN MEIER has taken the slot of Director of Marketing for The Promotional Edge, the LA firm that does fabulous special events for the cable industry. BethAnn will fit in perfectly, what with her background at MTV. Well Dunne! BethAnn!

Nothing like coming home, which is what KATIE WORTHAN did when she traded her writer producer slot at Hubbard’s NBC affil in Albuquerque, KOB, for the Sr. Writer Producer slot at LIN’s WISH in Indianapolis. She’s from Central Indiana, so it’s all a very good thing. Saw some of her work in NM and it was very good! Enjoy being home, Katie, and a shout out to your boss,  CSD SCOTT HAINEY.  Well Dunne!

KURT BARTOLICH will kick off February by taking the CSD slot at Meredith’s CBS affil in Kansas City, KCTV. Kurt has been in KC doing his own thing called Guts Marketing after being in Columbia, MO where he headed up corporate marketing for JW Communications, the owner of  KMIZ, the  ABC affil in that college town. A grad of Central Missouri State, Kurt spent several years with Magid. Well Dunne! Kurt.

Promo Whiz PHIL KRAFT, who is knockin’ ‘em dead at KTVT in DFW, has heard from his family members still living in Haiti and all is well. Or as well as can be expected. His Aunt and Uncle are healthy – their house not so much. His Aunt, btw, was the translator for PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER on his visits to the island nation and she’s very well connected, speaking several languages. I wonder if your News Departments are actually thinking through the enormous details involved in going down to this country, which has NOTHING. They really need to give Phil a call and he can give you important tips, many which would be lifesavers. Lifesavers.

We can all afford to help in some way. End of lecture.

Think About This: "We each have the choice in any setting to step back and let go of the mind-set of scarcity. Once we let go of scarcity, we discover the surprising truth of sufficiency. By sufficiency, I don’t mean a quantity of anything. Sufficiency isn’t two steps up from poverty or one step short of abundance. It isn’t a measure of barely enough or more than enough. Sufficiency isn’t an amount at all. It is an experience, a context we generate, a declaration, a knowing that there is enough, and that we are enough." ~ Lynne Twist
