Giggling because it’s soooo Well Dunn….who is the new CSD at Sarasota’s WWSB, ABC in America’s Riviera? None other than JOSEPH DUNN. Love it! And the coincidences don’t end there. He’s making the switch from Charlotte (!) where he was Digital Marketing Manager for ROBBY THOMAS’ hot WBTV shop there in the Queen City. He was promoted to that slot having been a writer producer – all while earning an MBA from UNC-Charlotte. Impressive. Mr. D picked up the promo trade from WSPA in the Greenville-Spartanburg market of upstate South Carolina. WSPA is about to become Raycom (if it hasn’t already) so Joseph is transferring within the company for this exciting new position. You are going to love Sarasota, Joseph. See you soon and Well Dunne!

Let’s face it…business isn’t anything at all like business was five years ago. Boy have things changed. With that in mind, here’s to the new Life After TV section of the WDTB (Well Dunne! Talent blog) which will be about people who used to do network/cable/station marketing on a daily basis but have taken those talents and moved on. Yes, the many talents, skills and ideas that you use daily (hourly actually) have tremendous value outside the narrow confines of the business as it has morphed today. Tremendous value. More about the basis for that in just short order, but let’s shine our light on our first LATV (Life After TV) person today:  KEVIN KOLBE. Kevin is an amazing man…faithful, father deluxe and creative as can be. When WRAL had a shakeup in their department, Kevin found himself (for the first time since high school) looking for work. He had headed up marketing for FOX there, another Capital property. So what does a highly creative man do? Use those skills. And he’s using them to document his search for his next step. It’s a vlog and you should YouTube it and sign up to watch them all.  Bet you identify with him…and for heavens sake, let’s find him something that moves the planet forward. He deserved the best. Well Dunne! Kevin

Down in lovely Palm Beach, where The Season is in full swing, comes word of a lady who’s retiring from the TV world, which is great news for her but not so much for the clients, station and viewers of WPTV. CHARLENE MAVILLE is closing the door of her office on Friday. She’s been a producer and marketing coordinator, and she’s amazing. Happy clients. Smooth operations. Ideal. A multi-tasker extraordinaire, Charlene’s been with WPTV for 18 years. You have all day today to hit her up and tell her that she’ll be missed, and she should savor every day doing what she wants, client free! Big smile. Well Dunne! Charlene

JASON KANE, who is Citizen Kane (right?) is the new Promotion Manager for Raycom’s WBTV in Charlotte, the Queen City. He began just this Monday and moves into his new place this weekend. Yep, he hit the ground running at the CBS affil, what with all that’s been going on. Despite the hectic pace, he sounded cool and very energized about his new slot. Jason is originally from Toledo, Ohio. How did he get from Toledo to NC? It happened when he was doing graphics and animation for an ad agency who sent him to Raleigh. He loved it…and became interested in news and before you knew it, he was using his agency skills for a TV station; he was Sr. Writer and Producer for WNCN in Raleigh, working with CSD ROBBY THOMAS. They produced an amazing and award-winning spot about school busses…you should ask them about it. Then, Robby took the WBTV CSD slot. But now, the two are working together, just further down I-85. Working with people who click is a real gift. Big Well Dunne! Jason.

Yes, there really are places that only have one traffic light and yet growing up happens in such locales, producing some mighty creative people. Take Hickox, GA for example. It’s where ROBBY THOMAS was raised and now he’s headed to Charlotte to be CSD at Raycom’s legacy CBS affil, WBTV. Mr. T and his wife (plus two miniature schnauzers) will be calling the Queen City home after their sojourn in the Raleigh market, where Robby was CSD for Media General/LIN’s NBC affil WNCN. First off in his leisure time will be some golf, white water rafting at the White Water Center and probably checking out the NASCAR events, what with Charlotte calling itself ‘home to NASCAR’ and all. No stranger to the Charlotte sports world, Robbie was a Charlotte Hornets fan when growing up. As a Georgia Bulldog, Robby will be a huge fan of Thomas Davis. For those of you not sports-centric, just Google Up the info you need. Meanwhile, safe and happy travels down I-85 to the new gig, Robby. Well Dunne!

CHUCK CAREY has joined mOcean, the LA-based creative agency and prodco for entertainment. His title is Chief Development Officer. Chuck’s also been President of Troika Design. The Choate/Rosemary Hall and Northwestern grad even got to go to Pepperdine to get his PKE MBA. Very cool. Well Dunne! Chuck.

One of the most amazing discoveries about life is that there’s a synchronicity to events that defy explanation. Like when there’s a lot of news happening in one specific market at one time. Like today….that market is Raleigh, where two cool events are transpiring. First, there’s WTVD’s MARYANN BALBO. She’s a dynamo who has a real knack for marketing in the true sense of the word, always coming up with Win-Win situations for clients and the station needs. She’s been the Director of Marketing and Digital at the ABC owned station in North Carolina’s capital. She honed those chops at NBC affil WNCN where she held a series of increasing responsibility jobs. She even took a Florida slot at the Tampa Bay Times as Senior Digital Advertising Manager. Got tapped as finalist for Tampa Bay Business Woman of the Year, too. Now Ms. Maryann is stepping up to a slot she’s long coveted – GM. She’s headed to Huntsville where she’ll be GM of CW affil WHDF. Adding to the patina of ‘dream job’ is Mr. Balbo who will be LSM at the station. Well Dunne! and never stop smiling Maryann!

Kudos to WNCN, NBC in Raleigh, and ROBBY THOMAS’ creative team for the recently bestowed Silver Telly for their PSA Brake For Buses. Sweet….Well Dunne!

BERT SHIPP has passed.  He was the assignment editor at WFAA…more than that really. He was an amazing teacher and someone who made WFAA the best. He taught the following lesson, which is, to this day, the one that has left the biggest impression on this writer: Never spit in the wastebasket. What looks like a throwaway at 10 in the morning might be the story that saves the day at 5. Excellent advice, Bert. Condolences to Bart Shipp, his son, and the rest of the Shipp family.

Think About This: What if every wrinkle, scar, or gray hair only made you more beautiful? What if every tear you’ve shed, mistake you’ve made, and challenge you’ve faced, only drew you closer to the light? And what if, for every breath you’ve taken, every sentence you’ve spoken, and every path you’ve chosen, your fans in the unseen multiplied? Well, I’d say it’s about time you found out. ~ The Universe

It’s a girl for BRANDII TOBY-LEON, who many of you know from her days doing PR at FOX and the Scripps cable nets out of Knoxville. She and her hubby are over the moon to welcome this long-awaited little doll. Well Dunne! Leons!

Come on everybody, support WRAL’s inimitable SHELLY LESLIE when she rides to beat cancer, covering her legs by writing the names of those who have inspired or gone ahead because of this horrible Big C. She needs a few more dollars to make her goal (by Thursday) so go here and help her out. She’s riding for my brother DENNIS DUNNE, and that alone puts stars in her crown. Lots of smiles coming to her from above.

Speaking of the Raleigh-Durham market, the uber-creative folks over at WNCN (I’m talking about you ROBBY THOMAS) have produced an awesome (and I use the word in its honest meaning not some valley girl slang) PSA about drivers need to brake for school busses. Aptly named #brake4buses, it’s gotten a ton of buzz and a huge Well Dunne! Check it out.

GEOFFREY HOLDER, who had the most mahvelous voice (any of you remember his 7-Up Cola-nut spots?) has passed away. We will miss his sound.

Writers block? No more. There’s an app for that (of course there is) appropriately named Write or Die. It’s rather fun. Give it a go….free trial.

Don’t you just love it when a job can also be a calling…when doing ‘work’ is also doing good. Win-win. Luckily, some folks fall into this, the best of both worlds. Like BILL DION, who is taking all his creative marketing talents and using them in his new role of Fundraising Producer for WETA, the PBS flagship in DC. Very cool. Bill has the kind of creative spark that comes from successfully doing day to day affiliate promo work for WESH in Orlando where he was Promo Manager and at WJLA, ABC in DC. He’s had the pleasure of being Poducion Manager for NAB as well as doing production and communications for the National Wildlife Federation. In other words, he walks his walk…Well Dunne! Bill.

Did you know kudos is NEVER plural? No, not ever. Therefore, if you or I or anyone else were to write ‘many kudos’ we would be incorrect. It is ‘much kudos’…don’t let the ‘s’ fool you. That said, let us pass along the kudos to Well Dunne! Talent’s HARRY LEGG and his work for CSD ROBBY THOMAS at WNCN…they just won two Telly’s. Harry contributed his fabulous voice. Well Dunne! ya’ll.

ZAK CIOTTI is heading east to take the Senior Writer Producer slot for ROBBY THOMAS at Raleigh’s WCNC. I hope he has an SUV to hold all his background in production, film and graphics that he’s bringing. Zak has most recently been in the Marketing Department of LifeStrength in Vegas as well as doing multimedia production for Phillipe Films. He’s done commercials and websites and all things creative, so you can imagine how excited the folks at NBC’s affil are to have him come aboard. And he’ll be working with two Well Dunne! talents,

A promotion is what made this June extra special for ROBBY THOMAS at WNCN in Raleigh, NC. He’s been named Director of Marketing for the Media General NBC affiliate. After arriving in February, Robby’s been hard at work doing the promos and when STEVE PATRICK went to WHEC, Robby got the nod and stepped right into the head slot. Well Dunne! Mr. T.

Speaking of Mr. Patrick, he’s the Well Dunne! Talent blogger at PROMAX Station Summit. When you see him, say ‘cheese’ and we’ll wrangle his thoughts and pix for posting.

What a wonderful surprise and a super read. None other than STEPHEN ARNOLD, the music man of Stephen Arnold Music, has written a book. The multi-talented Mr. A has penned Story of Six Strings. Kudos for those who immediately thought guitar. Here’s the link to Amazon. Go on…buy it. You know you want to…

From the Oops Department….I misspelled ROBBY THOMAS’ name last time. Heck, there were some errors all over the thing. He’s been at WMBB in Panama City (which is not all that far from Pensacola…) and is going to make the switch from Nahunta, GA where he launched BTC Vision for the Brantley Telephone Company. He has been Marketing & IPTV Director. Of course he’s still heading to WNCN in Raleigh. Well Dunne! again, Robby.

SuperBowl came and went and it all seemed rather, well, ordinary. The only spots that really worked were for Bud and Chrysler. The Bud spots about the end of Prohibition was amazing, especially the two Clydesdales rearing up at the end.  And who can beat amazing copy combined with Clint Eastwood?! Imo.

Got a deadline for the PROMAX Shuffle page…all you with new jobs better hurry up and share proper info and a jpg. Carry on.
