If there were black belts given out for promo, like they do with martial arts, WRAL’s JAY YOVANOVICH would definitely have earned one. Jay’s just been promoted at North Carolina’s powerhouse WRAL, now NBC affiliate. He’s now the Director of Marketing for WRAL and FOX 50. Jay’s been with WRAL since 06, getting several promotions along the way. He had been the On-Air Promotion Manager, but the titles and duties have been morphed in the station to fit the times. He’s a grad of the University of Delaware who started out in Charleston, South Carolina. He promo’ed in Pittsburgh at WPGH before coming to North Carolina. Jay’s a major martial arts enthusiast – which no doubt helps him on the creative path. A big Well Dunne! to Jay.

For those keeping track, the Creative Services Director slot at WRAL is still open and they are still actively looking. SHELLY LESLIE won’t be making the switch to her new role as General Manager of Audience Development until they find someone. As they used to say…stay tuned for further developments. Thanks Ms. L.

TLC has called one of their own back into the fold. JENNIFER SARLIN is back at Discovery as Sr. VP Marketing for TLC after a five year stint doing her own thing as Benzo Creative. Jennifer was Director Advertising and Promotion at TLC before going off on her own. She has a news producer background and worked for Conus and WBAL in Baltimore. Other stops along the way for the NYU Masters lady include Exec Producer roles for Big Shot Productions and Pixel Workshop (cute name). Well Dunne! Jennifer.

Promo pros seem to really love cycling. One such example is WRAL’s creative leader, SHELLY LESLIE, who is using her bike to raise money to fight cancer. Excellent. She rode in honor of my brother last year and will do so again this year. If any of you have ever lost someone due to cancer, you might want to consider donating to Shelly’s ride. Better hurry…the deadline is Friday. To make it easy, just click – and then be generous.

He’s a bull dog, a Georgia Bulldog that is. Thus JOSH MOREY has been living and doing very well career-wise in Alabama, which in football lingo isn’t really home turf. But he’s loving it. Josh and family recently celebrated his new job – Marketing Director of Birmingham’s Fox Affil, WBRC. It’s a 92 mile trip northwest from Montgomery, where he had been Marketing Director of WSFA, the NBC affil and Raycom flagship. He honed the promo craft while writing and producing down in Albany, GA for WALB. Know he’s gonna love Birmingham. And Birmingham will fall in love with his lovely family. Well Dunne! Josh!

Job Alert – TV News Graphis Designer WRAL Raleigh (work with SHELLY LESLIE !!)

This from the wonderful and fabulous BONNIE BARCLAY, VP of Marketing for FX Design Group who has been on an adventure with her family around America: In the dark theater, the voice came up before the first frame, with immediate recognition.  Without blinking or stumbling, I knew it as Walter Cronkite.  We were visiting FDR’s Little White House in rural Georgia, and stopped in the theater for the short video that all museums proudly suggest as your first stop.  But through the war footage, the polio footage, the presidential campaign – it was Walter’s voice that not only brought it to life, but lent the austere gravitas that only his voice could.  We could nightly wrap ourselves in that cashmere blanket of a voice and know that we might make sense of the world.  That is the power of just one voice.

It’s a girl for BRANDII TOBY-LEON, who many of you know from her days doing PR at FOX and the Scripps cable nets out of Knoxville. She and her hubby are over the moon to welcome this long-awaited little doll. Well Dunne! Leons!

Come on everybody, support WRAL’s inimitable SHELLY LESLIE when she rides to beat cancer, covering her legs by writing the names of those who have inspired or gone ahead because of this horrible Big C. She needs a few more dollars to make her goal (by Thursday) so go here and help her out. She’s riding for my brother DENNIS DUNNE, and that alone puts stars in her crown. Lots of smiles coming to her from above.

Speaking of the Raleigh-Durham market, the uber-creative folks over at WNCN (I’m talking about you ROBBY THOMAS) have produced an awesome (and I use the word in its honest meaning not some valley girl slang) PSA about drivers need to brake for school busses. Aptly named #brake4buses, it’s gotten a ton of buzz and a huge Well Dunne! Check it out.

GEOFFREY HOLDER, who had the most mahvelous voice (any of you remember his 7-Up Cola-nut spots?) has passed away. We will miss his sound.

Writers block? No more. There’s an app for that (of course there is) appropriately named Write or Die. It’s rather fun. Give it a go….free trial.

The smile on CSD SHELLY LESLIE’s face is because, after a long search waiting for just the perfect person, she has filled the Social Media Manager slot at WRAL. WENDY GATLIN began yesterday (Monday June 16) in Raleigh. So how did Ms. Wendy stand out and land this plum slot? Shelly said Ms. G described herself in an InfoGraphic describing herself as "demographic chameleon, deadline slayer, chief ball juggler, engager, who thinks in 140 characters or less.”  VERY cool. Wendy is making the transition from WFMY in Greensboro where she handled social media efforts and ran her own consulting company. She has a background in radio as well…uber cool. Needless to say, you should send her a tweet @gatatattat and tell her Well Dunne!

You know how some people impress you from the moment you meet them? DIANE FIOLEK is one of those folks, who described how to put a TV News package together to a very cranky crowd at a station not that long ago. She was brilliant. Of course, it aggravated the then-News Director, which meant she was totally on target. She has a new gig, having joined he Devlin Design Group as CSD. Her background at BrightHouse Networks and VDO will no doubt be an asset. Well Dunne! Diane.

Several CSD and VP slots are filling…have to wait to release, but you know you’ll be in the loop when we get the green light. Meanwhile…

In the world of News Directors, GREG SHEPPERD is one of the ND’s you want to work with. He’s down at Hearst’s KHBS/KHOG  in Ft. Smith, Arkansas working with another fave, CSD KEN BAUER. Just as an fyi, their 40/29 weather app is very sharp. Well Dunne!

Think About This:  "Words can inspire or criticize. Words help us express our feelings and explore the very depths of what we understand. Yet words are simply symbols, like signs along the roadway that point beyond themselves. More than beautiful words about love; we seek an experience of the beauty that is Love. More than words about life we seek to express the Light which is life Itself. As we move beyond the surface stream of our thoughts and words, we discover that there is so much more to us than words or ideas can ever describe. We are consciousness experiencing conscious awakening." ~ Ric Beattie

As we head into the Labor Day weekend when so many of us will be biking, hiking, swimming, and playing….or watching those who do..it’s good to know that ROBERT GOTTLIEB has added a new title to his already illustrious title at Fox Sports. He’s now Executive VP of Marketing instead of Senior VP of Marketing. The Emerson College and NYU educated marketing honcho has been with Fox for quite some time, including his stint as SVP-Creative Director of Fox Cable Netwoks. Well Dunne! Mr. G.

BONNIE BARCLAY has been busy (please note the rhythmic cadence to that phase). As the marketing guru for the FX Design Group, she was at RTNDA and it seems she was well turned out at the CNN Bowling Party. Check out the picture and see for yourself. Thanks for sharing Ms. Bonnie!  And don’t forget about the great folks at FX…they rock.

It took a long time, but CSD SHELLY LESLIE at Raleigh’s WRAL has finally found her Senior Writer Producer and he’s very, very talented. And from St. Louis and a Cardinals fan. Downright perfect. BRIAN SPENCER begins next week. He’s been at KSDK in St. Louis honing his creative juices for the last 8 years, and he knows how to do Topicals as only one who has spent time in a newsroom can boast. The Lindenwood grad (he went to CBC High School…always an important thing for St. Louis people to know) has outside TV interests as well…he’s the President of the St. Louis Hurling Club. No, not THAT kind of hurling – it’s Gaelic football. He’s going to love Raleigh and I predict an insurgence of hurling in the NC capital. Well Dunne! Brian.

You have until November 15 to come up with a new Simpson’s couch gag. Come on people – you are the most creative of all, so go for it and submit your ideas here. Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa and Maggie will be at your command.

Last week in Raleigh, the WRAL TV family were on hand when a brand new US citizen was sworn in. SHAN ZHONG, the Lead Designer at the Capital Broadcasting operation, was born in China…Nanjing to be precise. He came to the states to be an art student and decided the US was the place for him. After earning his Masters Degree in Computer Arts from Memphis College of Art, he quickly became a paperwork expert in order to stay stateside. That was 15 years ago. It all came together when he passed his citizenship test and was sworn in. And yes, I bet those of us born here would have a struggle with those 100 questions about our country. Shan has worked at WMC in Memphis before CSD SHELLY LESLIE grabbed him and she couldn’t be happier. Looks like a very happy group that Shan works with. On hand were WRALers BILL BURCH, STEVE LOYD, RANDY MEWS, STACIE HOLYFIELD, JAY YOVANOVICH, DEBBIE TULLOS, STEVE HAMMEL, Shan and Shelly.  Well Dunne! Shan.

Now, off to the very opposite side of the country – Oregon. L SCOTT WELLS is very excited about his new slot as Sr. Writer Producer at KEZI in Eugene. It’s the Chambers ABC affil in Eugene, home of U of Oregon which no doubt makes it a very fun place to live. Mr. W has been in the Portland market for years, and will still be close to family. It’s a win-win situation. Everybody is happy. LOVE that. Well Dunne!

A day late but still sincere – birthday wishes for Well Dunne! Talent’s CHUCK MATTHEWS. Have you given Chuck a listen? Just click on this name and then click on his demo. Yeah, he’s got a very good voice and you should consider him for your next choice.

Blogging the Super Bowl commercials from promo pros. Yep, that’s what is on the table. Gonna be fun. Sure do want one of the Invitees, but there’s a strong chance she’ll be at the game. How cool is that. Let me know if you’re interested!
