Dare we call it the best TV job in the country? Yes let’s. And that job, the Creative Services Director slot at Capital Broadcasting’s WRAL in Raleigh, goes to …. Drum roll….HEATHER GRAY. The California girl will be heading east from her current slot in Phoenix at the NBC affil. Interesting background…she started as a newscast puncher after getting a degree from Cal State Chico. How cool is that. She worked directing newscasts in Sacramento before heading to Jacksonville’s Gannett operation where she got upped from newscast director to Production Manager. From there she took the job in Phoenix, official title – Director of Programming and Marketing. Her new job puts her on staff with some of the greatest folks in the biz (shout out to SHELLY LESLIE and JAY Y), and in a setting that is gorgeous and unique. What will she do with all those gorgeous trees in the Triangle after a drought of vegetation from the desert? Hopefully enjoy them all. Well Dunne! Heather.
Stephen Arnold and his music are now even more places than ever. Besides doing work with China Global Television Network, listen for their work on HLN’s Something’s Killing Me hosted by actor BD Wong. Nice work guys…Well Dunne!

As was the case with the amazing TV people in Houston, the Florida TV pros stepped up and did epic work covering Irma. They still are. The internet allows us to see their news on-air, which is a modern miracle imo. The Florida, Georgia, South Carolina markets all shone. So many stories…so many deserving our attention and applause. So let’s start and keep adding to the honor role. And interest role, since we’re starting with blatant WDT promotion.
Well Dunne! Talent’s DARYN JOHNSON is a TV director for Fox’s WTVT in Tampa and was making it all happen on the air while sleeping in an office at the station on West Kennedy. Well Dunne! Talent’s SEAN CALDWELL headed to Atlanta and Irma followed him up I-75. An Atlanta resident already, RICH VANSLYKE read copy for Florida markets while preparing to have the hurricane mess with his town. Big-voiced MITCH PHILLIPS kept his sense of humor from the Fort Lauderdale area. All are safe.
In Jacksonville, WJXT’s Meteorologist JOHN GAUGHAN (pronounced Gone) did an A+ job on Irma in the Jax market. Promo that man with “GAUGHAN WITH THE WIND”. (Sorry SHERRY CARPENTER…had to use that.)
Creative “architect” STAN MELTON heads up DC’s ABC affil WJLA…and he recently teamed up with STEPHEN ARNOLD and his music, using the SAM cut “Waking Up My Day” for the station’s American Idol Front of the Line contest. The cut is part of the new “Ready” promo package. Well Dunne! Stan Stephen and CHAD COOK, VP of Creative for SAM.

The yin and yang of life…balance always seeking to right itself. Up-down. High-low. Hot-cold. One talented writer producer is doing the yin and yang to perfection, and it’s a wonderful thing. KRISTEN TWELE is heading to Orlando where she’ll be adding her talent to the creative services pool headed by CSD KYM PEOPLES at WKMG, the Graham CBS in the Big O. That’s the hot part. The cold part is Denver, where she has been promoting at KDVR, the Fox affil. The Memphis bred Kristen has worked in the south before – at Fox affil WBRC in Birmingham. She interned at WMC in her hometown. Best of luck to Kristen on her new adventure. Let’s all give her a Well Dunne!
STEPHEN ARNOLD not only has the best hair in the business (he’s been told that in person – he shyly smiles…) but now the music man working with his CSD CHAD COOK has a new campaign called Ready. Pictures are worth a thousand words….check it out yourself.
Tuesday was a great day for KTVU’s ERIK CANDIANI. He loves films…loves writing even more. And Tuesday his screenplay Tribal got not one but two kudos…it was just named a Quarterfinalist in the 2017 BlueCat Screenplay contest and a Semifinalist in the PAGE Awards. Well Dunne! Erik. You can ask him about the script…it sounds very exciting. And we thought Tuesday was only exciting because of the tacos…

Lexington is the heart of horse country; where the bluest of Kentucky blue grass inhabitants race and roam pastures so beautiful they do paintings. Lex, conveniently located half way between Louisville and Cincinnati, is now home to STEVE WALLACE, an outgoing creative with an eye for great photography who is now the Creative Services Director of WTVQ. He’s a Houston native and what goes better with Texans than horses…it seems like a perfect fit. He knows and loves and worked in Dallas but he’s a New Yorker by choice. His wife got him to Lexington, and that’s how he became head of the creative team at the ABC affil. I didn’t ask if he was a basketball fan, which is gigantic due to the University of Kentucky being right there. Well Dunne! Steve.
Ya’ll order your Stephen Arnold new holiday Christmas album? Do it! STEPHEN is amazing (and has the best hair in the business) and tells me: Purchasing our brand new Holiday album, "The Six Strings of Christmas, Volume 2" is a great opportunity to help provide music lessons and instruments to underprivileged public school kids around the country. Little Kids Rock trains public school teachers in their innovative curriculum and donates all of the instruments and resources necessary to run full-fledged music programs. You have to help out. New York New York is a helluva of town. While Day 2 goings on are being written up, let’s hear from the one and only RAY ECKE, PR guru extraordinaire, who had a super Tuesday at PROMAX NYC.
Day one of PromaxBDA always reminds me of the first day of college: people shuffling in with luggage and laptops, long lines to register, reconnected with friends they haven’t seen in months, and of course some looking confused and overwhelmed. The only ones missing are tearful parents waving goodbyes…
Kicking off the PromaxBDA 2016 was the well attended Leader Institute session “May-December (and January-July) Relationships: Finding Common Ground Through Intergenerational Dynamics, hosted by office culture expert Jocelyn Greenky, which focused best practices for working in an office with Baby Boomers, Gen X’ers, Gen Z’ers and Millennials. After the session I chatted with Alberto Scirocco, Creative Director of the Columbus, OH-based design/animation studio Leftchannel and his new Executive Producer Andrew Kobliska; spotted Greenky lunching with Andy Goldman, Chief Strategy Officer, TVTibi and Carolyn Bernstein, Head of sales and Marketing at zap2it (a Tribune Media company)…
From there is was off to find our inner nerd at Keynote: Nerds Rising with filmmaker/podcaster Kevin Smith and Andy Signore of Screen Junkies followed by a surpassingly salient conversation about politics and political coverage political consultant James Caraville, radio host Hugh Hewitt, veteran news producer Rick Kaplan, hosted by Katie Couric.
In between I had a chance to check out the latest guitars being given away by the folks at Stephen Arnold Music. Hanging around the veteran sonic branding experts guitar display was the company’s sales mavericks Noelle Alanis and Tinley Bone as well as Stephen himself, looking very much like he’d love to play the four guitars they’re giving away, which are beautiful recreations of classic guitars used by The Beatles, including a Hofner violin bass guitar.
Day one ended with a conversation with Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient John Miller, CMO of NBC Olympics — a class act and someone largely responsible for PromaxBDA becoming they must-attend event for everyone in the creative arts industry, followed by an excellent bash at South Street Seaport.
Day 2 looks was equally promising…Lets hope everyone find their classrooms easily.
Wonderful PR man DAN HARARY pointed out my spelling is not all that great, so for those who understand the beauty of a well-spelled name, let’s try this one again….LEILA AMIRSADEGHI of Eclipse.

Telemundo has named a new VP of Marketing for their network. MARIA ISABEL FIGUEORA will take the Miami-based job, coming over from VP of Marketing for Sony Pictures Latin America and Brazil. The University of Michigan grad has also been part of the Yahoo! marketing efforts. A bright and happy Well Dunne! Maria.
Creativity is when someone puts a whole new spin on something that we’ve all seen before. For instance, think about color combinations. Yellow plus Blue equals Green. But the folks at STEPHEN ARNOLD Music have taken this fundamental art fact and turned it into a stunning clear vinyl LP, full of their music, and it’s a sight to see. Named ‘What’s Printed Here’, it’s a limited production item, but you should check it out as best you can. Kudos to Dallas’ Rucker & Co for their artistic contribution.
Oops…ERIK CANDIANI isn’t starting in Oakland at KTVU on November 12. Turns out his first date in the office there will be November 30. Everybody stand down and enjoy November and Thanksgiving.

What happens when two class acts and all-round great guys combine their efforts? You get the combo of DAVE BAUMANN and STEPHEN ARNOLD, that’s what happens! Mr. Dave is the new Marketing and Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. Brilliant. Dave’s had music in his soul and this seems like the dream job one often conjures. His background in marketing is as impressive as his smile – CSD at WXYZ in Detroit, Marketing Director of KSTP in his home state of Minneapolis, Marketing Director of KIRO out Seattle way and Senior Graphic Designer at Twin Cities Public TV. All long runs with award-winning output and results. One of the best parts of the new adventure is he won’t be relocating from Detroit. He and his better half love it there. Stephen Arnold is the head man for the music company that bears his name and the music you hear on many, many stations around the world. Would mentioning the network jobs be too over the top? Let’s hear it for Dave. One. Two. Three. Well Dunne! Dave.
JIM MCNULTY, who does fab promo work for his own shop out of DC (you should keep him in mind what with November fast approaching!) was blesse by the Pope yesterday. Beyond terrific. God bless.

Dispatches from PromaxBDA Day 2 & 3 By Ray Ecke
For many creative professionals, the motto is ‘less is more,’ but don’t tell that to the organizers of this year’s PromaxBDA 2014. There were so many fascinating panels Wednesday it was impossible to see them all. Highlights included the State of Design featuring Stephen Price of Stash Magazine showcasing some of the best work of the last year; New Best Practices 2014, in which the always insightful Lee Hunt spoke in detail about measurement and how networks can better retain viewers; and leftchannel’s Alberto Scirocco’s Promo Bootcamp session Internet Killed The Promo Star that discussed new ways to inspire your creative soul and avoid ruts. Day 2 wrapped with an amazing discussion with filmmaker and founder of the El Rey Network Robert Rodriguez. His emphasis on living a full creative life was eye-opening. As he noted, “Ten percent of anything is understanding, the other ninety percent is being creative.” It was also fascinating to learn that he has a paint studio on all of his sets so actors when they are not shooting can go there and paint and “keep their creative juices flowing."
At the hotel bar, I had a chance to sit with voiceover artist and fellow “Jersey boy” Harry Legg (yes he swears that’s his real name). Over Diet Cokes (it was still a little early for drinks) we discussed his transition from radio to voiceovers, and the state of medium of radio in general. Are we the only two people who miss the classic DJs from the old WABC and WNEW New York radio stations? I hope not. If you get a chance to meet Harry, do get his business card, shaped like a hairy leg (get it, hairy leg/Harry Legg).
The night wrapped with a trip downtown to the Videohelper party. Inside their cool space with instruments hanging on every wall, guests were greeted with top shelf booze, a pool table and a free-for-all jam session in their soundproof studio. Spotted at the shindig were Steve Marino, director/CD at Nitrous Studio, master rep Stuart Sternbach of Pangea and design house The Goods’ EP Jason Sonner.
All of which led to the Day 3…
Highlights from the Thursday sessions were “Fresh & Flashy But Familiar: The Art of the Episodic Promo” featuring JD Currey of Fresh Cut Creative and Joe Tamanini of Studio City, who got into ways to liven up your promos; and “A Deep Dive Into The Rebranding of CCTV International” featuring Stephen Arnold and Chad Cook of Stephen Arnold Music, Tim Saunders and Caroline Aldridge of Broadcast Design International and Stefan Mueller of Flint Skallen, which went deep into their collective work for CCTV’s relaunch of 6 channels.
Before that session though, Stephen Arnold Music did its annual guitar giveaway. The winner this year of a Fender Strat signed by Tom Petty was Jon Fox, Executive Creative Director of Hothaus Creative, Atlanta. Later at pre-awards reception Jon wondered about the best way to get the guitar back to Atlanta (definitely on the ‘no’ list was the airline baggage check).
At the awards show, hosted by the very clever comic/actor Jeff Leach, some of the notable winners included Nickelodeon and 20th Century Fox’s Walking with Dinosaurs "Dino Rap"; Comedy Central — Franco Roast in the category of Entertainment Promo Spot; and CBS Television – "Under the Dome" Launch for Entertainment Program Campaign. The Agency of the Year Awards went to L.A.-based Stun Creative (North America), and The Corner London (Global Excellence).
The complete coverage and list of winners is here: (http://brief.promaxbda.org/content/fx-networks-wins-big-at-2014-promaxbda-north-america-awards)
What a great pairing. Along the lines of Martin and Lewis…cheese and crackers…bacon and eggs. Music man STEPHEN ARNOLD and creative guru GORDON SMITH are combining all that talent into a one-stop creative talent shop. Well Dunne! boys.
Got several great folks heading this way and that, but am awaiting the greenlight from those who greenlight. And let’s face it, this winter has been so harsh just about everywhere you look, it amazes that ya’ll keep from dropping the ball. Give yourself a warm Well Dunne!

ANDREW MCGUIRE has done the Impossible. Well, something like that anyway. He’s actually joined Impossible TV as the new Creative Director of the brand building entity. The Oral Roberts U grad is best known for his digital art direction when he was Senior Art Director for Saatchi & Saatchi’s prestigious Team One. Why he just won the Mobile Lion Award for work he did for Lexus TORI 500 racing game. Andrew sounds like a real go-getter with a lot of talent. It’s what his new boss, JOEL PILGER, thinks for sure. Well Dunne! Andrew.

What can a girl say, other than these four are some of my favorite guys in the TV marketing world. STEVE PATRICK of WHEC, PAUL HELLEBUSCH of WFLA, STEPHEN ARNOLD of Stephen Arnold Music and LARRY DOYLE of WTSP. PROMAX Station Summit continues.
New Orleans’ WGNO has a new promo producer/writer/editor and his name is JARED BURNS. Thought you’d enjoy hearing his take on his new slot: “My name is Jared Burns and I’ve come to New Orleans, LA from across the state. Moving up to a market size of 53 here at WGNO is a big step up from KPLC, market 176, in Lake Charles, LA, but I’m enjoying all the new sights and opportunities. Going from a commercial producer position in Lake Charles to a promotions producer here in New Orleans is definitely a challenge and a change of pace, workflow, and responsibilities. However, I’m definitely glad that I made the move; I’ve learned a lot and gotten my hands on great new equipment all within the first month. I definitely consider this to be positive career move and am looking forward to learning so much more in this position.” Well Dunne! Jared and thanks to his CSD JEFF FUNK.
Today’s picture is not of New Orleans or Jared Burns, but it is a cute one that encompasses two fun favorites. That’s WHEC’s new creative guru STEVE PATRICK reading STEPHEN ARNOLD’s very cool read, The Story of Six Strings.

From the Oops Department….I misspelled ROBBY THOMAS’ name last time. Heck, there were some errors all over the thing. He has been Marketing & IPTV Director. Of course he’s still heading to WNCN in Raleigh. Well Dunne! again, Robby.
SuperBowl came and went and it all seemed rather, well, ordinary. The only spots that really worked were for Bud and Chrysler. Well Dunne!’s crackerjack stringer RAY ECKE is hard at work at PROMAX, writing up yesterday’s events as he attends today’s sessions. In the meantime, check out the frivolity on the faces of some Maxers on their way to the Intrepid party. Here’s his WEDNESDAY REPORT
Wednesday report from PR and writer RAY ECKE
…Another amazing day at PromaxBDA here in sunny NYC…
The day began with some great writing insights from the great writer Elmore Leonard and a conversation with CNN’s Anderson Cooper who was interviewed by CBS Early Show co-host Erica Hill. Cooper revealed details about his forthcoming syndicated talk show. “This is not a news program, we think this year we will be the only show on the air that covers a broad spectrum of topics,” Cooper said. “From a big celebrity interview one day, to a hot-button social issue the next day, and the following day an interview with a real person who has a real-life challenge we can all learn from. And pop culture stuff, I am as big a student of pop culture as anyone out there.”
LEE HUNT (KB insert-Lee is one of the smartest and most visionary…he’s amazing) is always informative “Best Practices” drew huge crowds as he unveiled his latest research into effective promo placement, cross channel promotion and the value of social network sharing apps to network promotion. Lee’s entire presentation is available on his website — http://leehunt.com/
Motionographer’s Justin Cone presented his always-popular State of Design, which focused on best creative design and motion graphics of the year. All of the work shown can be seen at www.motionographer.com/sod2011.
The day ended with the Marketing Genius panel in which 4 promo projects were presented to a panel of experts that included JOHN MILLER, MO of NBC Universal; Susan Credle, CCO, Leo Burnett; and “30 Rock” co-star Judah Friedlander. The winner was design house Roger’s work on the Scream awards, with STEPHEN ARNOLD Music’s work on the WGNO’s God Bless Louisiana’s promo campaign coming in a close second.
Looking forward to today’s session with Spike Lee interviewed by Charlie Rose and of course the big Awards extravaganza hosted by my old college buddy Jay Mohr.

Forbes has some unhappy stats to share about the impact of technology and a bad economy on our business: “Broadcast news analysts and advertising and promotions managers experienced five-year declines of 16% and 33% respectively. Talk about One To Watch…put NOELLE KEARNS on that list. She’s the newest member of JIM HART’S Creative crew at Scripps’ ABC affil KNXV in Phoenix. Noelle began on Monday and is calling The Valley of the Sun home, leaving behind the still wintry weather on the East Coast. She’s as native to Philadelphia as a cheese steak. Noelle began at WPVI in Philly, working her way up from Intern to part-time Associate Promo Producer. Her teachers on this journey? One uber-talented MIKE MONSELL, VP and Creative Honcho at ABC’s station in the City of Brotherly Love. And the other was effervescent KRISTIE GONZALES, now CSD at ABC in Fresno – but when taking Noelle under her wing, Kristie was crafting promos at WPVI. Noelle has a degree from Temple and I hope she gets as big a kick out of the saguaro cactus as I do! Big Well Dunne! Noelle.
