It never fails…when you run across someone and you know they’re going to be a star. Going to stand out and be amazing. Words to describe it (and that could be the word – It) are hard to come by and frankly are like reading a white wine description. It’s close but doesn’t really nail what you want to say. But you know. Such was the case with BROOKE DEARBORN. She was a participant in a Topical Boot Camp SYD RUBIN and I did for CBS’ WBZ in Boston. SEAN BARNACOAT had assembled an A-List team of promo and news pros ready to sharpen their topical skills…and they were attentive to the max. Brooke had that “sumin-sumin” as Oprah would say. Now she has a new job over at the FOX station in Beantown. Hate to see CBS lose her, but we all move on as we grow. Brooke has a very interesting background in promotions: Promo Producer for NECN as well as WWE plus time at Jerry Springer Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Boston U grad deserves a hearty Well Dunne! Brooke.

Let’s start on the far west coast and work our way eastward this week, shall we? Seattle is pretty much the farthest west without leaving what the Alaskans call The Lower 48. And the soon-to-be FOX station currently Tribune (at least as of this writing….things change so very quickly Toto) has a new hire. Say hello to SCOTT KRAGELUND, now aboard Q13/JOE tv/Portland’s CW triopoly. Hmm, are all three going to FOX? Anyway, Scott is a TV guy who calls Spokane home. Yes Spokane home to the Spokane Indians baseball club. Scott has a sheepskin in broadcasting from Washington State U and went to work first as an intern then as a morning news show director at ABC affil KXLY. He loves punching live shows and did so for Q13 before taking a Redmond-WA based tech job as Video Production Manager. Like a lot of the tech companies, it shone brightly before losing sparkle and now, he’s using all the great experience to return to his old Seattle stomping grounds as their Creative Services Writer Producer. He gets to call SYD RUBIN boss and they all work and play well with former promo pro now GM PAM PEARSON and Marketing Honcho BRENT AYRES. Well Dunne! Scott!

And in this corner…northwest major market…hailing from Roseburg, Oregan and on her way up the ladder is – ding ding ding – NANCY MacDONALD. Could you picture the referee and feel the boxing concept there? Read it again and see if you do. OK, good. Nancy is the recently promoted News Brand Manager at currently-Tribune’s FOX affil Q13 in Seattle. She had been Creative Services Coordinator but got the bump in the last few weeks. Yeah, during the February book, so that means she was swimming in deep water off the bat. The lovely lady started out in TV as the Creative Services Production Assistant at KPIC in the afore-mentioned Roseburg. She confides that she doesn’t own a dog or cat, but has a Godzilla action figure on her desk. Alright alright alright! Did we mention she works with the amazing SYD RUBIN who wrangles News promotion there at KCPQ? Well Dunne! Nancy.

Yes, of course it’ still copyrighted by me.
It all started in Lubbock. Yep, in the near-Panhandle of Texas where LARA RICHARDSON had her first TV job. She coordinated Promos for KJTV and then jumped to USA Broadcasting in Miami where she added Writing and Producing to her repertoire before getting bumped to Director On-Air Promos. From there it was on to NYC to be Senior Writer Producer for Oxygen before catching on with Discovery where Ms. Lara held a series of well-earned titles like Supervising Producer for TLC, Creative Director of History Channel and VP Creative TLC. In 2012 she was tabbed Senior VP of Marketing for Discovery out of their LA offices then just recently her title was again promoted to Group EVP Marketing Discovery, Animal Planet and Science Channel. VERY nice Lara. She graduated from high school in Puerto Rico and Washington State University. A kind hearted soul, she volunteered for the Red Cross after Katrina, and, in true creative style, turned that experience into a documentary. Well Dunne! Lara.
Job Alert – Senior News Brand Producer WCPQ Seattle (Work with SYD RUBIN!!!)
Now, let’s face it…finding a place where the ND doesn’t believe they are marketing pros…where the GM understands the marketing process and you don’t have to convince them it’s important…where your direct boss is one of the best, nicest and smartest ladies in the business (and she cooks too!) … in a big market, well, that’s pretty rare. And that’s what this job is. So my little puppets…let’s find the right person!
