Another creative light has gone out. STEFAN GERBER passed away while in surgery on Thursday. Gerber was a master of words….a man whose ability to communicate was unparalleled. A former colleague said he learned from him…such things as ‘take the last idea on a piece of copy and use that last line as the first line for the rewrite.” That was the essence of Stefan – pushing you to think one step beyond the obvious. Brilliant. Strong. Gerber was one of the names and leaders of the uber-creative LA-based Jacobs & Gerber agency. They employed the top of the line talents of the day, devising award-winning as well as ratings generating work for many of the CBS operating units, ie Entertainment, O&O’s and News. In recent years, Stefan was the Creative Director for Air Planet at Planet 365. A UCLA grad with a Masters degree in English, he did his undergrad work at Berkeley. His talent must have been genetic; his sons went into the advertising industry. Please think of his family and remember to push yourself beyond the safe zone. All our work becomes our legacy.

New Years Eve Eve Eve

Turn off your mobile devices. Do it. Go within. Read. Write uninterrupted. Eat carbs and sugar. Think about something familiar in an entirely new way. Make mistakes. Clean them up. Light a candle or a fire. Listen. Stay warm. Stay cool. Get naked or get dressed up. Call your best friend, your mother or your old boyfriend/girlfriend. Binge watch. Have a great New Years Eve while we kick that nasty SOB 2017 to the curb and we open the door for 2018.

The following has nothing whatsoever to do with Harvey Weinstein. Let’s talk size. Market size. And the bottom line is, in today’s world, most people don’t really care anymore. Once upon a time the larger the market, the larger the salary. The more toys available to make spots. Largest budgets. Even more prime slots for promos. And the prestige – there was indeed a patina to the market size. Anybody read Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thom Friedman? It sums up the fact that our technology has made those editing and graphics toys available to all. Ownership consolidation has pretty much wiped out the huge market salaries (as a rule) and outside media budgets that were awesome. Today, CSDs, producers, marketing pros – most everyone is looking for an open slot that fits into THEIR lifestyle…closer to family, closer to the mountains/ocean/desert – markets that are more than just a place to live and work. Housing that might be affordable. Culture. Or solitude. Let’s refrain from thinking market size is an indication of talent. Seen spots in NYC that make you drool and seen spots from small markets that do the same. The days of market size are over…it’s all about lifestyle. Carry on.

Who’s going to be in London for the next few days? Why it’s Well Dunne! Talent’s newest talent, JON SPECHT, who’s going to be producing the radio portion of the Kansas City Chiefs game when they tackle (literally) the Detroit Lions across the pond. Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the kind of job that appeals. Jon’s a pro that brings a fresh sound to any project, so you might want to consider him if you’re putting together next year’s plans.

Speaking of England, another of Well Dunne!’s talents is the voice of the BBC who was heard on all the Jaguar commercials. He’s Englishman PAUL DEAN KELLY and we’ll have to check in to see if he’s an American football fan. Don’t get a fake accent when you need a Brit, people. I could just listen to him talk ALL day long.

Former promo pro SUE RAYMER lost her battle with cancer Wednesday. She literally grew up in the business – the daughter of Sid Gayson, who signed on and/or owned TV stations like KOVR in Sacamento, KGW in Portland, a whole ton of stations in Texas and radio stations in Hawaii. She did promo for KCOP and was Director of Television Marketing and Syndication for MGM. More recently, Sue was Account Director at The Hollywood Reporter. She loved going to the Emmy Awards and the Texas Film Commission events. You can take the girl out of Texas but you can never take Texas out of the girl.

Think About This: “Let us be very sincere in our dealings with each other, and have the courage to accept each other as we are. Do not be surprised or become preoccupied at each other’s failures – rather, see and find in each other the good, for each one of us is created in the image of God."  ~  Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Bi-cultural, bi-lingual and a Yale man to boot. That’s the 411 on WHIT HASKEL, just named VP of Marketing and Business Development for Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Soccer Plus and the associated websites. What a great slot for a guy who’s been VP of Marketing and Comm for the LA Galaxy (the pro soccer team for those who won’t google it). Whit has worked for the Barcelona Dragons (NFL Football in Spain), Feld Entertainment, Liberman Broadcasting where he had the title Dir of Marketing and Promotion, and VP Strategic and Hispanic Marketing for The Ballpark Ad Agency. He’s also founder of Umbral Yoga and The Trias Group. Wow. Well Dunne! Whit.

Martha Stewart doesn’t do anything in a small way. And it’s always with a flourish that makes it tres Martha. That’s also the way to describe the mega marketing plan that will accompany Martha’s show debuting on Hallmark Channel on Sept 13. It’s all under the direction of SUSANNE MCAVOY, Senior Vice President of Marketing, who has planned everything from signs in Macy’s to on-air and online to even working with local female running clubs. No doubt there will be thank you notes involved at some point. The entire campaign gets a Well Dunne!

Makin plans for Friday night in LA? Gonna be in Hollywood on The Strip? Then stop by Red Rocks and check out Well Dunne!’s KEVIN GASSMAN.

There’s very little ice, ice baby in Palm Beach, FL, but that’s where Vanilla Ice is going to host his new DIY Show in which he remodels, renovates, and generally makes pretty a 7,000 sq ft place. Yes, you’ll be able to see the step-by-steps – it is the DIY Channel after all. Can’t wait to hear how to make the pool prettier!~

Excellent article that outlines what NOT TO DO when you’re in charge. And people, PLEASE feel free to direct this to those who need to read it.

This, btw, marks the 750th post on the Well Dunne! blog. Thanks for reading it and sharing your life events with us all.

Big news from BIGSMACKtv, the Philly based creative services agency for the broadcast world. They’ve added three to their team and promoted two. Adding Executive to the producer title are KELLY DIALS and HEIDI FREDERICK ERNEY. Coming aboard are NY-based director/DP MANUEL MIRANDA who has worked on campaigns for Victoria’s Secret and Macy’s, cinematographer JEFFREY PHILLIPS, and stylized director SCOTT WHITHAM. Thanks to Creative Director ANDY HANN for the update. That’s him in the pix there. Look for their latest work on the new image campaign for Bio Channel. Well Dunne! one and all.

The very clever talents at World Wide Wadio come up with their own annual version of Christmas cheer…and every year they get better than the year before. Well Dunne! to them all and thanks PAUL FEY for "It Came Upon A Movie Clip" – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7J3hASLgdo

TVNewsCheck Editor HARRY JESSELL outlines that the new Comcast/NBC gorilla is committed to broadcast TV  while broadcast chronicler DIANE MERMINGAS weighs in on the future of broadcast with the new Comcast/NBC world upon us and it’s less than committed.

Swear this is a real listing from the Phoenix Craigslist: Willing to pay barter of laser hair removal worth $2000 In exchange for creative writing for this project.  So, if you know of a particularly hairy writer, this might be ideal.

Love it when the marketing folks get the nod to run the whole show. Well Dunne! goes out to MICHAEL SMITH, just named head of the new Cooking Channel. Official title is General Manager. Scripps is converting the Fine Living Network (FLN) to the Cooking Channel and is shifting Michael over from The Food Network, where he has been Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Creative Services. Before his 10+ years at Food Network, Michael was with Disney and CBS Network. He’s one smart guy – holds two sheepskins: undergrad in biz from Stanford and an MBA from Berkeley. Impressive. Glad to see such a great guy move upward! Let’s hear it for him one more time – Well Dunne! Michael.

That means his slot at Food will be open.

Condolences to GREG RANDO, #2 Creative at FOX’s KTVU in Oakland, on the sudden death of his mother. Thoughts and prayers to you, Greg.

Print this out and then send it to your GM and News Director. Watch the improvement in your branding efforts happen immediately.
