TONY PIERCE isn’t in Kansas anymore. He went to college there…at Washburn where he studied Marketing. He worked in Kansas as Production Manager – twice – first at Topeka’s WIBW then at KTMJ. He was Promotion Manager at Scripps’ KSHB in Kansas City. But now he’s moved to Florida heading up his first Creative Services Director job at Scripps’ WFTX, FOX in Ft. Myers. Trading sunflowers for palm trees. Most gorgeous market for a very busy guy. Well Dunne! Tony.
More good news, which the people affected by the recent tornadoes in the southeast are going to love. You know about WDAM’s Pine Belt Strong telethon, which also had a big hand from Jackson, Mississippi’s WLBT, Biloxi’s WLOX and Memphis’ WMC. Another Raycom station, WALB in Albany, GA held a one day phone bank that raised more than $202,000. Called Rise Up for Recovery – Give for South Georgia Tornado Relief. The telethon is ongoing…which means you can go online and continue to donate. CSD JIM BERNHARDT of WALB says it all goes to the Red Cross to help get people back on their feet. Bravo and Well Dunne! to all the hard work that helped raise $585,000 so far!

We’re all busy, but some of us are insanely busy. BRENT STRUENSE, the Director of Marketing at Scripps’ FOX affil WFTX In the gorgeous Fort Myers market, spent the last 12 months juggling the following: 1-the normal day-to-day station duties, which in his case is keeping 7 departments and 2 local programming shows all humming along 2-overseeing the station’s $2 mil renovation (if you’ve ever worked with contractors and the like, you can identify) 3-renovated a condo for himself 4-moved (into the condo) and 5-finished up his MBA. WOW…very very cool. He says one must focus, keep at it, and if you’re working full time (or more than full time in his case) find a distance learning program. Ask him about his choice and he’ll sing the praises, even about the accounting classes one must endure for that degree. A major Well Dunne! to MBA Struense. Very proud of ya.

No secret how much I love the Gulf Coast of Florida. So it was doubly fun to talk with FOX affil WFTX down in Ft. Meyers. How wonderful is that market? Well, it’s the seashell capital of the world and that pretty much seals the deal in my world. But let’s talk about the new Promotion Producer down there, CARA MUELLER. Cara is a native of the Sunshine State, hailing from Tampa. She’s got a diploma from University of Fla as well and Cara is thrilled to be moving from the production end of the biz to the marketing end. She’s what CSD BRENT STRUENSE calls “homegrown’ talent. Everybody is happy and that’s what palm tree studded locales are all about. Well Dunne! Cara. And thanks Brent.
Another radio guy has been kicked upstairs to help run a TV group. TVNewscheck reports that CBS Radio CFO ANTON GUITANO has been named COO of CBS Local Media. He joins the ranks of JAY O’CONNOR who is heading up the Cox TV group. Question is why. Call me difficult, but the I don’t see the synergies and I would LOVE to know the thinking behind this trend. Anybody? Anybody? Buehler?

Watching BBC News early this AM and was reminded that time marches on – for the first time since it happened, there were no living World War I veterans at the Westminster Abbey ceremony. This being Veterans Day, perhaps we need to seek out the WWII men and women and make sure we cherish them.
