ROBYN KEENEY was a standout from the get-go. A star at the Topical Boot Camp, she was doing promo for Sinclair in San Antonio, at Fox KABB for TERRY McFARLANE at the time. Shortly thereafter, she made the switch to CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento but, once you fall in love with Texas (and she loves horses and is quite the equestrian) it’s always luring you back. And it has. Robyn begins the later part of the month at CBS in Houston, KHOU. It will be a real challenge, since she’ll be around while they build a station, their Allen Parkway locale having been flooded then sold. If anybody is up to the task, it’s Robyn. So thrilled for her. Well Dunne! Robyn.
Meanwhile, another Houston item deals with the long-empty slot at WLS-TV in Chicago vacated by now-GM CURTIS MILES. It’s finally filled. ABC is bringing up DAVID LEE from their station in …wait for it…Houston. David will be wrangling the local programming in addition to the marketing and creative for the Windy City news and programming. Official title will be VP Audience Development and Creative Services. He’s a guy from the great American west (namely a grad of Montana State U) who’s worked for ABC in Fresno and been with KXLY in Spokane as well as KMSP in Minneapolis. Well Dunne! David.

We all hear about ‘keep at it’ and ‘persistence’ and ‘never give up’…almost ad naseum. But the truth is…the fact is…it works. And the best example of this tenacity is CURTIS MILES. For a very long time, the General Manager slot has been what his heart desired. Yes, he loves the world of TV promo/marketing/creative, but the ability to be the GM, to truly steer the station…that’s been what the Iowa native has focused on. It wasn’t easy. There’s a very wrong concept amongst many hiring entities that creative are far inferior to be a GM than sales people. Good thing the folks at Quincy Media know a thing or two…they’ve announced that Curtis is starting as GM at their ABC affil WAOW in Wausau, Wisconsin. He’ll being the end of July and will be saying good-bye to 13 years with ABC Television. He’s currently Vice President of Creative Services and Local Programming for Chicago’s WLS-TV. Curtis has been CSD at ABC’s WTVD in Raleigh as well as then-Belo’s WVEC in Norfolk. He was Promo Manager at Hearst’s WTAE in Pittsburgh and consulted for Magid. His first job in TV – photog for KGAN in Cedar Rapids. Nobody could be as happy for him as the person writing this. Well Dunne! Curtis.
Tomorrow, news about San Diego’s KGTV.
Job Alert – Writer/Producer/Editor GSN TV Santa Monica
Think About This: “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” ~ Randy Pausch from The Last Lecture

JOE EARLEY did a bang-up wonderful job when he was with Fox Television Group, starting as a publicist, moving to President of Marketing and Communications before being tapped COO for FOX Television Group. Now he’s on the move again. After taking January off, he signed on as President of The Jackal Group, which is Gail Berman’s co-venture with Fox Network Group to produce all kinds of entertainment, from scripted to film to even theatre. Gail is a FOX alum herself – she was President of Entertainment at Fox. Whew. Fireworks will no doubt ensue. Well Dunne! Joe.
Condolences to WLS’ VP Creative Services and Local Programming CURTIS MILES, who lost his father suddenly over the weekend.
Think About This: “When I think of death, and of late the idea has come with alarming frequency, I seem at peace with the idea that a day will dawn when I will no longer be among those living in this valley of strange humors. I can accept the idea of my own demise, but I am unable to accept the death of anyone else. I find it impossible to let a friend or relative go into that country of no return. Disbelief becomes my close companion, and anger follows in its wake. I answer the heroic question ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ with ‘it is here in my heart and mind and memories.”” ~ Maya Angelou
