Everybody has coping methods for life. Some people swim…or play tennis…or paint. Some cook or clean or meditate. Or all or some of these activities. It’s always amazing to watch someone grab life and reshape it like a statue of clay that needs attention. When CHRISSY FUNK reached one of those “important life moments” she got out her hiking boots and took to the Appalachian Trail. If you don’t know about hiking the trail, then look it up and be amazed. Chrissy found herself on the trail…not that she ever lost who she was. But like all artwork, she became more complex, more deep, more interesting. The lady who has a solid core of “I can do this” now knows she can do ANYTHING. And what she’s going to do is head back to Palm Beach (ah, just in time for The Season, my dear) where she’ll be heading up Creative for WPEC, the Sinclair CBS affil. Ms. Chrissy is no stranger to PB – she was head of creative for Scripps there. And before that, she was working with one of the very best (and favorite) SHERRY CARPENTER at WJXT in Jacksonville. Other stations where she learned and did award-winning creative include KDVR in Denver, WTAE in Pittsburgh and WTEN in Albany. She’s just amazing…you should know her. She inspires. And she has the most adorable pug dogs! One-two-three … Well Dunne! Chrissy!
Think creativity is just something one does or ‘gets’…well, it’s really more complex and it’s all in the brain…Thanks to The Guardian for the article.

Every time one is lucky to stumble upon someone who is delightful, it feels like a present. I mean someone who shares something that makes you go…’whoa…I so get it”. Had that happen with JOHN GILLIAM, who is heading to Palm Beach to be Promo Manager for Sinclair’s WPEC. CSD ALEX SHAW picked John from under the tutelage of CSD PETE FERRARO at Sinclair’s flagship WBFF in Baltimore. He’ll be down amongst the palms in early October and will be bringing with him a background that is ideal for a creative – diverse adventures and life experiences. Take note HR folks – creative are not quite like the other little mushrooms that work at a TV station. Creatives draw from their life and outlook to be able to bring forth the ideas that make up their job. John does that and this is what he had to share about himself.. As a kid, I had the world’s coolest older brother. I remember being six or seven and my brother sat me down one Saturday and said, “Let’s build a speaker”. He tried (emphasis on tried) to show me how to construct a speaker from wood, paper, and magnets. I may not have fully understood the concepts he taught me that day, but nevertheless it ignited a spark in me. He went on to talk about how expression through media was the answer to his inner calling. One of my first jobs out of high school was teaching kindergarten. Even then I had the urge to produce something media related. In class, my students would put on historical reenactments. We would shoot them with a little Sony Handy Cam and turn them into short documentaries. The kids really enjoyed it and it gave me the opportunity to teach in a way that I loved—through film. When I went back to college, I took a one credit university seminar where we were asked to give a presentation about our first semester college experience. So I took my Handy Cam and made a 10 minute highlight reel about my experiences. At the conclusion of my presentation, my adviser stopped me and asked if I knew there was an entire department at the school dedicated to multi-media production. It had never dawned on me that I could make a living making videos. John has a Masters degree and kicked off his TV career at KFSM in Fort Smith. A hearty Well Dunne! to a man who values tea parties with his daughter.

You’ve all heard of the brass ring…well, this is about the gold ring. Grabbing it is CSD ALEX SHAW who heads up the marketing arm of WPEC, Sinclair’s Palm Beach CBS affil. In just shy of a week, his new Promotion Manager is going to check in, and that is the gold ring in discussion. The good folks at the station will be welcoming BARRY FITZSIMMONS to the fold, and they couldn’t have found someone who’ll bring more talent and zip than Barry. Plus they’ve gotten themselves a man with a wonderful sense of humor. Let’s fact it…a sense of humor is as important as oxygen in today’s world. Many of you know Barry by his author and podcast name, the Promo Cowboy. It’s a novel as well as a Must Hear..his iTunes podcast Promo Cowboys. Do it. The Boston U grad has worked promo magic at NBC, MSNBC, ONE World Sports and ESPN as well as ABC, MLB, etc. NYC has a lot of great work done by Barry (and folks who are Promo Cowboys). He’ll be a real asset to Alex and will be working with fun talented LARRY DOYLE, who knows a thing or two about what makes poppin’ TV. See you all soon…it is The Seaon you know. Well Dunne! Barry.

LAUREN RIDGLEY does not let grass grow under her feet. She’s no longer full-time station side where she headed marketing like she did at WISN in Milwaukee, but her marketing talents are not sitting in idle. As if being mom to a most adorable little girl under the age of 1 isn’t enough, she’s now working with Marshall Advertising, the folks who handle media buying for many stations. So when Lauren reaches out to you, reach back! Lady is fabulous. Lauren will stay in the Northwest, but isn’t it lovely we can all work from where we are most of the time now. Yes it is. Well Dunne, Lauren!
Horribly destructive weekend in the south. Tornadoes in many places. ERIK SNELL and his family had a very close call with a damaging twister. All is well with the Snells but not so with their neighbors. He’s the CSD at Raycom’s WDAM in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Tomorrow, great news from WPEC in West Palm.

If you’re hoping to get a free moment of ALEX SHAW’s time in June, well, you might be out of luck entirely. His calendar is booked…good thing the longest day of the year is June 20. June will be the month when baby Shaw #2 debuts (it’s the first part of the month – but babies seldom check iCal), the month he hits Vegas for PROMAX and the month he begins his new job as Creative Services Director of WPEC in West Palm Beach. Throw in packing, changing diapers, saying goodbye to the folks at Baltimore’s WMAR where he’s vacating the CSD slot, finding a new place to live, spending time with little Shaw #1, spending time with his wife and last but not least standing in long TSA lines…whew! Tired just thinking of it. The Boston U grad will handle it with ease. His background in TV includes Promo Producer at WSVN in Miami, Promo Producer and Editor at KCRA in Sacramento, and Director of Creative Services and Programming in Springfield, MA. Alex is returning to West Palm actually – he was once Executive Producer of Promos for WPBF amongst the palms. Let’s hear a big Well Dunne! before he’s too busy to let it sink in!

Let’s end the firecracker month of July with a lot going on all at once. First, we turn our attention to the elegant Palm Beach market and news the Sinclair stations there, WPEC/WTVX/WTCN, have a new Commercial Production Manager. Enter LARRY DOYLE come August 10. Give the GM there, MICHAEL PUMO, a gold star for recognizing talent. Larry will be part of the station team that includes CSD JAMES GRIFFEL so the excitement level is going to be very high. Anyway, the writer here has worked for and with Larry and he’s utterly creative. Palm Beach clients are in for a treat. Mr. Doyle of the Irish name and visage has been CSD at Tampa’s WFLA as well as WTSP in addition to leading creative at WCNC in Charlotte plus writing and producing for KHOU in Houston. He’s from New Hampshire which adds to his elan. Best part of the new gig is he’ll be close to his college bound daughter, soon to be a freshman in the Sunshine State. Well Dunne! Larry.
Next up, another fave is DAVID HERSHEY heading up CBS’ KTVT in Dallas. He’s filled a critical slot and with that, we’ll let him take over: I’m happy to announce that RHETT SCHWARTZKOPF has been promoted to Senior Promotion Producer for CBS 11, TXA 21 and Me-TV. I first met Rhett almost 10 years ago when he was a student at UNT. I was speaking to his class about this crazy, little known department of misfits called ‘Creative Services’. He came up to me afterwards and said ‘THAT is exactly what I want to do.’ From there, he earned an internship in our department. Eventually, he moved up to being part of our UPN 21 ‘U-Crew’ street team (remember that?). He worked his way up to producing promo spots for us full-time and that’s what he’s been doing for us ever since. Recently, he was also our station Employee of the Month. Rhett’s incredible skills, creativity, can-do attitude and work ethic make him a tremendous asset to our stations and I’m thrilled to have him on my team in this new role. Well Dunne! Rhett. PS – not related to General S that we know of….
Finally, last but not least, KXAN in Austin has promoted NATALIA EGAN to CSD. More info on her Monday. Watch this space.
