What do you say about a talented protégé whose work you’ve admired for many years…when that person announces they are retiring. How can that be? Retiring? Yes, it’s true…retiring. Using the “R” word is JIM ROTHSCHILD, currently Station Manager of legendary WRAL in Raleigh. Jim is a St. Louis man who has two stations on his resume: KMOX (now KMOV) and WRAL. That, my friends, is what is known as totally solid. Perhaps there’s a short stint at KTVI in St. Louis, but that’s just foggy memory. Hearing he’s retiring is dispiriting. Some people are like Atticus Finch…they’re always there. Jim is following the lead of current WRAL GM STEVE HAMMEL, who is handing in his GM biz cards and using the “R” word himself. April is when Jim steps away. Between the two men there is approximately 80-plus years of experience. Be impressed. There aren’t cap letters or colors to indicate how sincere and deep this is: Well Dunne! Jim.

It’s a major adventure in the works…a move from coast to coast (nearly literally)…and an exciting new resident of Seattle in the making. It’s JAY YOVANOVICH’s new slot – he’s the just-named Marketing Director for KING / KONG in the space needle city. The Tegna operation has big shoes to fill because he’s coming from WRAL in Raleigh, which is the best station in the country. Yes, it is and you all know it. Jay’s been Marketing Director for WRAL and their FOX50 sister in the North Carolina capital. He worked his way up the ladder at WRAL, starting as a promo writer producer and it’s been about 12 years since he moved from On-Air Promo Manager at Pittsburgh’s WPGH. He’s also worked in Charleston, SC doing promo for WTAT. The University of Delaware grad is into Brazilian martial arts in his spare time…and he’s quite good at it. He’s even better at getting eyeballs to screens and forging image. BTW, he’s not going to start until we turn the page on this year, so you have plenty of time to shout out to him a big Well Dunne! Jay.

She’s starting on Thanksgiving Day…it’s auspicious to pick such a memorable day to begin a new chapter. CHRISTINE VARGAS is doing just that – picking Thanksgiving, when she starts as News Promotion Manager at Tribune’s FOX affil in San Diego. I bet they’ll have pumpkin pie (at least) for her, eh? Christine is coming over from CBS affil KFMB in SD where she started as Promo Coordinator and was upped to Topical then Senior Promo Producer…shows good work and an eye that her former CSD, MIKE STEWART, had. Very excited for her. Well Dunne! Christine.

Listen up folks in the DC area. Well, more specifically one particular area, namely Gaithersburg, Maryland. Tomorrow (Tuesday Nov 7) is election day and the talented JIM MCNULTY is running for City Council. Do we need to tell you to vote? OK, then – GO VOTE. For him. The University of Scranton grad started his creative career (yes, he’s a TV creative!) at WYOU in Wilkes-Barre, PA and honed his creative promo chops in DC at WJLA, WRC and WBDC before catching on at Discovery Home/TLC and working at any number of creative leadership roles for the behemoth media co. Now he’s the owner of his own shop – Wurdsmith Creative. He’d be a super councilman! So Gaithersburgers…get out there and do the citizenship thing. Well Dunne! Jim.

Worry not…none of the WRAL promo folks were injured in the fire that broke out at their Raleigh studios on Friday night. Good news indeed.

Dare we call it the best TV job in the country? Yes let’s. And that job, the Creative Services Director slot at Capital Broadcasting’s WRAL in Raleigh, goes to …. Drum roll….HEATHER GRAY. The California girl will be heading east from her current slot in Phoenix at the NBC affil. Interesting background…she started as a newscast puncher after getting a degree from Cal State Chico. How cool is that. She worked directing newscasts in Sacramento before heading to Jacksonville’s Gannett operation where she got upped from newscast director to Production Manager. From there she took the job in Phoenix, official title – Director of Programming and Marketing. Her new job puts her on staff with some of the greatest folks in the biz (shout out to SHELLY LESLIE and JAY Y), and in a setting that is gorgeous and unique. What will she do with all those gorgeous trees in the Triangle after a drought of vegetation from the desert? Hopefully enjoy them all. Well Dunne! Heather.

Stephen Arnold and his music are now even more places than ever. Besides doing work with China Global Television Network, listen for their work on HLN’s Something’s Killing Me hosted by actor BD Wong. Nice work guys…Well Dunne!

If there were black belts given out for promo, like they do with martial arts, WRAL’s JAY YOVANOVICH would definitely have earned one. Jay’s just been promoted at North Carolina’s powerhouse WRAL, now NBC affiliate. He’s now the Director of Marketing for WRAL and FOX 50. Jay’s been with WRAL since 06, getting several promotions along the way. He had been the On-Air Promotion Manager, but the titles and duties have been morphed in the station to fit the times. He’s a grad of the University of Delaware who started out in Charleston, South Carolina. He promo’ed in Pittsburgh at WPGH before coming to North Carolina. Jay’s a major martial arts enthusiast – which no doubt helps him on the creative path. A big Well Dunne! to Jay.

For those keeping track, the Creative Services Director slot at WRAL is still open and they are still actively looking. SHELLY LESLIE won’t be making the switch to her new role as General Manager of Audience Development until they find someone. As they used to say…stay tuned for further developments. Thanks Ms. L.

So many people written about here on the Well Dunne! blog are Promo Cowboys, the name BARRY FITZSIMMONS tabbed for creatives who switch markets in order to spin their marketing magic.  Every now and then, there’s a very notable exception to that rule. Someone who grabs the golden ring and finds a great job with the right people; matching ideas about how business should be. One of those golden ring people is SHELLY SMITH LESLIE, who, come this June 2, will celebrate 30 years with Capital Broadcasting Company, the owners of WRAL in Raleigh. For the last 25 years, Shelly has been part and then leader of the people who make WRAL one of the most successful stations in the country – the marketing folks. And now, in honor of the success and longevity Shelly has achieved, she will be stepping up to a new title and new duties – General Manager of Audience Development. It’s a new division for Capital, one in which Shelly will be identifying  new audiences for new platforms, expanding their video digital footprint and, of course, putting some green in the bank. VERY exciting. I talk to nearly everybody over the course of a year, and Shelly has the unique distinction of being the happiest person in the biz. The first time we talked, that’s the impression she left…lucky and a lady who, indeed, got the gold ring. It’s been a very good couple of months for the avid bicycler. This is the cherry on the whipped cream on the cupcake called Capital. The biggest Well Dunne! coming to you Shelly.

The last few days have certainly been, uh, interesting. There was joy and gratitude and the sharing of feelings that bind us as humans. For instance, former promo pro JIM GRAVINA, who is now tearing it up at the DC Agency Shine Creative got married. He and his gorgeous bride are actually on their way to Niagara Falls. Love it!

Up in Raleigh, where the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew raged, WRAL’s SHELLY LESLIE has quite the story regarding a huge heavy tree that fell…right on the car she was in. The tree fell perfectly between her house, not hitting anything. It fell on the car, but didn’t hurt her or her passenger. It’s angelic.

Bright days ahead for WJLA’s ZOHRA ALNOOR got engaged! The lady with the great smile now has the greatest smile. Yes, happiness in spades for this wonderfully talented young lady.

Come back tomorrow when we’ll have people news from Portland, Maine..and…

Lovely AMANDA WHITE has taken the creative reins at Atlanta’s WXIA. The lucky lady is an Atlanta native who now has the title Marketing Director of the NBC affiliate. She’s no stranger to the station – she’s been promoted from Director of Insights and Strategic Marketing. She was also Research Director and handled Paid Programming Sales Coordination at one time. The soft-spoken lady also part of the team at the Weather Channel as National Copy Coordinator and did a marketing internship at Atlanta-based Gospel Music Channel (now  UPtv Network). She has an MBA from University of Georgia. What a peach. Well Dunne! Amanda.

A quick Well Dunne! to ALISON HOFFMAN upped to CMO from EVP Marketing at Starz in LA. She’s a Brown grad, who’s also done marketing magic at AMC Nets.

What’s better than one adorable pink bundle of joy little girl? TWO adorable pink bundle of joy little girls. Congrats to KGO’s CANDACE ARCHER on her new family addition. Big sister now has little sister!

In lieu of taking Sunday off and not writing, the mere fact that the date comes along just every 4 years prompted this missive. Post Oscars. It’s Leap Day. February 29. So much fun…looks odd in its own way. Maybe things for all of us will be in alignment…didn’t they seem rather out of sorts? Happy February 29th to one and all.

There are some very tired folks in the creative services departments of Capital’s WRAL and Media General’s WNCN in Raleigh. While you were watching some very clever Oscar tie-in commercials from Kohl’s and McDonalds, they swapped nets – WRAL now NBC and NCN now CBS. If you have never been involved in a network affiliate change, well, it’s the marathon of marketing. Let’s hear a big Well Dunne! for all the people who made it happen, with a particular Well Dunne! going to CSD KRISTEN BYRUM at NCN and CSD SHELLY SMITH LESLIE at RAL. Ladies, great jobs.

CLYDE BECKER loves Denver and is staying put with his new job in Multi-Media for the Media News Group. Well Dunne! Clyde.

TLC has called one of their own back into the fold. JENNIFER SARLIN is back at Discovery as Sr. VP Marketing for TLC after a five year stint doing her own thing as Benzo Creative. Jennifer was Director Advertising and Promotion at TLC before going off on her own. She has a news producer background and worked for Conus and WBAL in Baltimore. Other stops along the way for the NYU Masters lady include Exec Producer roles for Big Shot Productions and Pixel Workshop (cute name). Well Dunne! Jennifer.

Promo pros seem to really love cycling. One such example is WRAL’s creative leader, SHELLY LESLIE, who is using her bike to raise money to fight cancer. Excellent. She rode in honor of my brother last year and will do so again this year. If any of you have ever lost someone due to cancer, you might want to consider donating to Shelly’s ride. Better hurry…the deadline is Friday. To make it easy, just click – and then be generous.

He’s a bull dog, a Georgia Bulldog that is. Thus JOSH MOREY has been living and doing very well career-wise in Alabama, which in football lingo isn’t really home turf. But he’s loving it. Josh and family recently celebrated his new job – Marketing Director of Birmingham’s Fox Affil, WBRC. It’s a 92 mile trip northwest from Montgomery, where he had been Marketing Director of WSFA, the NBC affil and Raycom flagship. He honed the promo craft while writing and producing down in Albany, GA for WALB. Know he’s gonna love Birmingham. And Birmingham will fall in love with his lovely family. Well Dunne! Josh!

This from the wonderful and fabulous BONNIE BARCLAY, VP of Marketing for FX Design Group who has been on an adventure with her family around America: In the dark theater, the voice came up before the first frame, with immediate recognition.  Without blinking or stumbling, I knew it as Walter Cronkite.  We were visiting FDR’s Little White House in rural Georgia, and stopped in the theater for the short video that all museums proudly suggest as your first stop.  But through the war footage, the polio footage, the presidential campaign – it was Walter’s voice that not only brought it to life, but lent the austere gravitas that only his voice could.  We could nightly wrap ourselves in that cashmere blanket of a voice and know that we might make sense of the world.  That is the power of just one voice.
