Got word on Friday that GM MICKI BYRNES of WKYC in Cleveland is retiring. If you don’t know Micki or have heard her name, you are definitely not paying attention. She’s truly amazing. Has been for quite some time. Back in the day, she was the head Creative for WSB in Atlanta. She had been chosen to do the network tie-in spots which were all the rage. Getting to play with the network folks was a huge deal, and Micki’s spots were jaw droppingly WOW. How good, you ask? So good that she convinced this young (at the time) writer to not keep doing major league PR but to do TV. The goal was to be as good as Micki. She was that kind of talent. Later it was a pleasure to be on an NBC board with her. She took all her marketing skills and talent and transformed herself into a General Manager, a position that this writer feels creative people should be tasked with more often. To say she will be missed is an understatement of major proportions. A heartfelt Well Dunne! to Micki.
