Every now and then, even in today’s craziness, something grabs attention for the sheer uniqueness of it. Such was the case last week when JR VANWASSENHOVE mentioned snow. In August. In Florida. Snow. No, it wasn’t SFX. Hmmm. So JR’s boss, WFTV Orlando’s CSD RON DEJOSEPH was kind enough to give us a sneak peek at a national project being handled by the creative crew at the Cox-owned ABC affil. ANTHONY CERVANTES is the Director of Retail Services who shared the project details. Come mid-November of this year, you’ll be seeing a new, national PSA for Toys for Tots, the Marine toy drive helping children have a merry Christmas. They are updating their worthy cause to get the message out, since this year the need might be greatest. Part of the spot concept involved snow. How did Anthony find real snow in Central Florida? He Googled it. That’s right…googled it. WFTV set the shoot date, and it just happened to fall on the hottest day of the year, which Anthony says was “99 but felt like 113”. The snowmakers showed up with pallets of ice blocks and a chipper of sorts. The daily summer thunderstorm was planned for and the house was a real one in a neighborhood near the station in central Orlando. Anthony even had a snow shovel, which is pretty rare in his neck of the woods. Thank you Amazon. The Marines and their snappy uniforms were real. Keep an eye open and definitely give their lovely Toys for Tots effort airtime. And better yet, donate to this cause to bring some joy in an otherwise rough year. Well Dunne! Anthony, JR, Ron and all the folks at WFTV.
