Fast spreading fires, rolling power blackouts, unhealthy air…what’s happening in California might be the “new normal” for them…and for us. Three major burns are happening as of this writing on Saturday morning. Millions more might have their power shut off to prevent further blazes. And the winds and temps are not cooperating.
ABC affil KXTV in Sacramento was ahead of the curve, so to speak, with a three-part special about fire, water, and money. It which explains why power company PGE can, and does, shut things down and why the state can’t do much about it. It’s on their website and well worth your time. Thanks to DAVID MONTGOMERY for the info. https://www.abc10.com/mobile/firepowermoney
In the Bay Area, WES RODDA at NBC points to a special they did on the anniversary of the Santa Rosa fire. The same areas of Sonoma are on fire again this year, right now. The map on their website shows where the power may be cut…it’s a huge area of San Francisco and the east bay. There’s also going to be cuts in water service. Cell phone providers promise that their service won’t be interrupted. Hmmm.
Down in San Diego, new CSD KATIE REID shared that NBC was covering small brushfires happening on Thursday, but by and large, the area seemed spared from something wilder. Sadly, the very next morning, Baja Mexico lit up with a deadly fire in their viewing area just over the border at Tecate.
The weekend seems to hold more outages, more smoke, more problems. The winds may shift and put entire new areas in emergency mode.
The Well Dunne for this post goes to KXTV for that special, and to the enormous amount energy shown by he many firefighters and helpers.
