Mod Op, the super creative digital agency, has got both sides of the country covered with their two new hires. Going into their LA office as Creative Director is ANDY HANN, who was tearin’ it up with creative in Philly at Big Smack and Concrete Pictures. New York has brought AUDRA V. PACE on board as Creative Director and Brand Strategist from her CD slot at Gluttony (love that name). She’d been at A&E Networks as Director of Strategy as well. Managing Director DAVID EDELSTEIN has added Partner to his title. Excellent. Mod Op is involved in several projects with entertainment entities and hit a home run (or should that be scored extra points) with a project for Nike where they designed a personality test to match children with their player archetypes and perhaps their new athletic shoe. You know when people say ‘what chemistry’ it means that two entities, combined, spark and ignite into something special. You hear it a lot about movie pairings, but we should really think about using it more for creatives and the companies they work with. Let’s begin with ANDY HANN and his new role as EVP Head of Broadcast for BPG Advertising out in LA. It’s a pairing that is definitely one that has great chemistry. The Otis College of Art and Design grad has used his talents at a number of west and east coast firms, like in LA, Philly and NYC. He’s directed the creative at E! Entertainment TV, Pittard/Sullivan, Concrete Pix and was Head Creative (which makes me chuckle at his picture…head creative…hahaha) for BIGSMACK. In keeping with the head theme, let’s have a tip of the hat and a Well Dunne! for Andy!
Seems like Super Bowl is not good news for chickens. Some unbelievable number of wings de poulet will be smothered in hot seasoned sauce then dunked in cool ranch before going down the alimentary canal during the game. Last year, the number was 1.25 billion. Oy!

The Sacramento-Phoenix connection is pretty strong. Two Phoenix Marketing Directors come direct from Cali’s capital…plus one GM, and now BOBBY RIGG is part of the Sacto Crowd. Mr Bobby is the new Marketing Manager for Scripp’s syndicated show, THE LIST, which launches Sept 17 across the USA. Very exciting. Bobby comes out of Houston’s KHOU where he was Sr. Writer Producer for CSD DALE LOCKETT at the Belo-owned CBS affil. The Sacramento connection lies with his work at Hearst’s KCRA. He started his TV marketing career at KZTV, the CBS affiliate in beautiful Corpus Christi. The University of Houston grad also attended UT in Austin. Well Dunne! Bobby.
BIGSMACK has a new Creative Director. Welcome aboard to MATT HALL, and it’s a reunion with ANDY HANN, the guy who owns BIGSMACK. The two worked together at Concrete Pictures in LA not all that long ago. Matt is going to bring all the creative heat that he’s built up working with such entities as NBC Sports, A&E and NatGeo. Matt’s also been a creative director at 3Ring Circus (loved their work). Well Dunne! Matt!

He’s a Jersey guy at heart and by birth, so getting to Philly is going to be a lot of fun for CHRIS GRENIER, who just hopped on the creative bandwagon at Big Smack. His title? Creative Director. He’ll be working side by side with owner ANDY HANN and Executive Producers HEIDI ERNEY and KELLY DIALS. Chris is making the switch from being VP/Copy Supervisor at Campbell-Ewald in Warren, MI (which is really Detroit, no?) and his agency roots go deep. Matter of fact, Chris has been with Doner, Ogilvy & Mather as well as Philly-based Tierney & Partners. He studied at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta. Well Dunne! Chris.

Every single state has snow right now. Yep, even Hawaii (the Big Island)…except Florida. Which is where we kick off today’s post. In Tampa, actually. Let’s all raise our OJ’s in a toast to the newly promoted KARLENE BALL, who is now the Promotion Manager of Scripps’ ABC affil WFTS in the Tampa Bay area. An upstate New Yorker by birth, Karlene and her then-boyfriend, now hubby, got sick to death of the winters and they did what many of us have threatened to do – quit the jobs and moved to the beach. With her degree from Plattsburg State in hand plus a resume that included FOX in Albany, Karlene found herself in Tampa and WFTS found her. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. She learned how to do TV by doing all the TV jobs, like chyron operator, and landed in the Creative Services department, where she’s steadily been honing her craft. When then-CSD DONNA WILSON got a bump to GM in Tulsa, it was Senior Writer Producer Karlene who kept things going before now CSD DENNIS ELSBURY arrived. This is a fun little twist – as Promotion Manager, she’s working with Dennis for a second time…he was Promo Manager when she first came to the station. Lots of great karma here, including the fact Karlene is a recent mom. Her 4 month old daughter is never that far away thanks to computers and the fact we can email pix all the time. Well Dunne! Karlene!
OPRAH’s very own network, called OWN as you know, is no doubt throwing kisses at the talented crew at BIGSMACK, who took the Bruce Mao Design logo and turned it into an on-air look and promo kit. They did the coolest thing – color coding the elements for each different daypart. Love that. Well Dunne! ANDY HANN and CREW.

Big news from BIGSMACKtv, the Philly based creative services agency for the broadcast world. They’ve added three to their team and promoted two. Adding Executive to the producer title are KELLY DIALS and HEIDI FREDERICK ERNEY. Coming aboard are NY-based director/DP MANUEL MIRANDA who has worked on campaigns for Victoria’s Secret and Macy’s, cinematographer JEFFREY PHILLIPS, and stylized director SCOTT WHITHAM.
