Seattle is hot…not temperature-wise, but hot as in things are happening there. Let’s begin with the first of three announcements. This one is about KCPQ, the Fox affiliate in the Emerald City. Yes, that is the nickname of Seattle and so evocative. ANDREW DELGADO is headed to KCPQ, Fox, to be the #2 to BRENT AYERS. He’s leaving behind the great folks at KENS in San Antonio, which means the one and only DON SMITH is going to be on the hunt to replace him. Andrew is a San Antonio guy with a degree from St. Mary’s. He’s got a wonderful reel for sports promos and that will be a big plus for his new slot. He’s actually racked up quite an impressive list of productions he’s helmed for such entities as NOWCastSA.org and 13th Floor Studios. He stayed to enjoy Fiesta, of course. A big Well Dunne! Andrew.

Things move so fast today. Well, some much more than others. Working at CBS affil KENS5 in San Antonio is definitely in the Fast column, where CSD (and fave) DON SMITH has named a new Art Director, having lost one to Austin’s Fox in a manager slot. In Don’s utterly creative style, he sent out a welcome for DERRICK BARRIOS that is too good not to share.
Derrick has spent the last few years at WOAI/KABB as their Art Director and has worked at the station for 10 years. He also spent time doing graphics at KIRO in Seattle. A native of San Antonio, Derrick has been recognized for his work with multiple Emmy nominations and one win, two silver Promax Awards and he was recognized by the San Antonio Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for his graphical work on their latest documentary. Fun facts: WAY better dresser than me His family owns legendary SA restaurant Los Barrios He’s an avid car enthusiast and loves doing his own small maintenance on vehicle Loves to sing karaoke (at least every other weekend) and go out dancing Well Dunne! The eyes of Texas…you know the song. And it’s the theme for today’s post. Beginning in the heart of Texas (another song), namely Austin. FOX’s KTBC has a new Promotion Manager who’s a Texan through and through and has even worked at the station before. Welcome GENO GARZA to the new title. He came up I-35 from San Antonio, where he was Art Director for the CBS affil under the fab DON SMITH. Of course, his new CSD is fab as well (shout out to DAVID SQUIRES). Back in the day, Geno worked at KTBC as a graphic designer before teaching it at Austin Community College. Then he went over to KVUE and added Video Editor to his talents. He ran his own creative shop and added motion graphics as well. KTBC has landed a whale, as they say in Vegas (and always as a big ol’ compliment). Well Dunne! Geno.
What’s he going to miss is the big debate at KENS. Big Senate race in the Lone Star State between Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz. They’ve agreed to do three (and only three) debates, and KENS landed one. The last one. Set for October 16, details will be coming along. Hoping they stream it. The candidates will also debate at my alma mater SMU, so there’s that. Well Dunne! everyone.

CHRIS and CARLA SLOAN have built an amazing operation in Miami with their 2C Media. Now they’ve added three, including the very talented LARRY WIENER. The UMass Amherst grad got his start in Boston doing a variety of TV jobs at Cablevision then jumped into promo for New England Cable News. He learned promo by writing and producing at WKRN in Nashville, WSVN in Miami (where he got promoted to Promo Manager) before jumping to LA for Fox Broadcasting as Sr. Writer/Producer On-Air Promos. He took the VP/Creative Director position at ION Media Networks and was Director Creative Services for CBS in Miami and VP Marketing and Creative Services at Tribune in Ft Lauderdale. He’s worked for Discovery and most recently was VP Creative for Eclipse Creative. His title with 2C is Creative Director. Very exciting for all involved. Well Dunne! Larry.
But wait – there’s more! BEN FRANK and MARNI WAGNER, who have both worked at 2C, were promoted. Both are now Creative Directors. Ben has a station-side background having done news and topical promos. He was a promo producer for WPLG and was at WTVJ when Chris discovered him, and the rest is, as they say, history. Ben’s work for 2C is on display for promos for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown as well as the NBC Olympics Opening ceremony promo. MARNI has worked in LA and NYC, as well as traveling as producer for long form network shows. Her latest work is the launch on CMT on Nashville. Yes, she has a lot of awards – all deserved. A Texas lady always feels at home and ready to take on the world no matter where she is. But when she’s in the South, it’s even better. Such is the case with MICHELLE BEECH who is a TCU grad (that’s Texas Christian in Fort Worth for you Google-shy folks). Michelle is now Creative Services Director in Spartanburg heading up the creative efforts of Media General’s WSPA and WYCW, the CBS and CW affiliates in Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market in the upstate of South Carolina and western North Carolina. Beautiful territory, and there’s a Pottery Barn outlet, too. Back to Michelle, who names America as her hometown, seeing as she was a military child and she moved all over. She has a most interesting background and was most recently at AR&D as Marketing Strategist and Station Marketing Consultant. She has led departments at KKCO and KKTV as well as produced promos for WJTV and WAPT. She’s a major win for WSPA…let’s all chime in and send her a big Well Dunne!
Speaking of Texas…down San Antonio way, Tuesday a very special little someone made his debut and the reviews are all raves! KENS CSD DON SMITH and his beautiful wife have a new baby boy who has a very adorable and proud big brother. Can’t wait to see more pictures…you should send Don a big congrats. No word on whether there are cigars on the horizon, but there is definitely a major spike in the cuteness factor in SA today.

San Antonio is a lovely city….they like to enjoy life there. They celebrate and dance and sing…all to the background of color and greenery and friendly people. When DON SMITH emailed about his new Marketing Manager, it was another happy moment for the South Texas branch of TV. With all the craziness happening, to hear happy news is a tonic. Former digital team member ANDREW DELGADO is the new Marketing Manager for KENS5, CBS in SA. With his degree in English and Communication Arts from St. Mary’s (were during Fiesta they have an amazing oyster roast!), Andrew has been producing promos and the like for a bit…and now he’s gonna be Don’s wing man. When he was doing digital, Mr D got awarded a Texas AP Broadcasters Award as well as a Murrow. Impressive. OK, everybody, let’s hear a big Well Dunne! Andrew.

About half way between San Antonio and Corpus on I-37 is Three Rivers, which is west of Beeville. Thought I knew all the Texas towns but Three Rivers is a new one and we thank TYLER GARCIA for bringing it to our attention. Tyler is from there and he’ll be pretty close to home now that he’s gotten a job with KENS 5, CBS in The Alamo City. CSD DON SMITH has grabbed him to be the new Topical writer producer, a very important slot indeed. Tyler will be heading down to SA from Austin where he’s been writing and producing for KVUE. Tyler graduated from Texas State at San Marcus and is a major sports fan, as are many Texas men. While in the Navy, he was a hospital corpsman…very interesting. A big Texas size Well Dunne! for Tyler.

So much going on…so little desire to do anything that isn’t “summer-related.” Luckily, AARON BEVILL doesn’t feel that way. He’s the new Creative Services Manager for WNCT and ENCT, the CBS and CW affils in eastern Carolina, namely Greenville. It’s a promotion…love hearing about promotions. Before he was tapped for CSM, Aaron was working nights as writer producer, which he did so well he won an Emmy for his work…only the fifth golden statue in the history of Greenville TV which led to the stations winning their first CBS Eye on Excellence Award for promotion. Aaron is a grad of Eastern Carolina U and loves basketball and his new baby. He also knows how to fix yachts. Yes, he can fix yachts. Now how many can list that on a resume? Sounds like this is a great year for Aaron and the stations. CSD MARC MORRISTON is very proud of the whole thing. Well Dunne! Aaron.

Would one of you wonderfully talented and creative people please come up with a new word other than blog. The word itself sounds as if there’s a digestive problem happening…not good. KEVIN KOLBE, who is CSD at Capital Broadcasting’s WRAZ in Raleigh, has expanded his KevinKolbe.com site to Facebook. And it’s very uplifting. We need uplifting. about faith, family and fun. Kevin says he hopes to inspire, challenge, motivate and share. Check it out. DON SMITH, now heading up KENS creative down San Antonio way, has long been posting with his http://idopromoz.blogspot.com and it’s terrific. All about, the name says it all…promos. Effervescent DANI DUDEK, creative wrangler of Charleston’s WSCS, has a blast with her blog ATXGOSSIP.COM, which chronicles the celeb and pop culture scene…lots of lists and Ms. Dani says ‘a side of snark’. Of course, it’s also Facebookable. Promo Cowboy and amazingly talented BARRY FITZSIMMONS has taken the blog to a more media-heightened plane with his podcast, which grew out of his wordpress blog of the same name. It’s great…interviews with some industry folks. Blatant self promotion time…download the conversation the two of us had. Go on…find out why you should not spit in your wastebasket. It’s not just a good manners thing. Anybody else have a blog (that word…augh) they want to share?

As a most lovely June winds down and we’re all poised to kick off the July 4th festivities and holiday, had to interrupt some time away with news of one of the best. You can take the boy out of Texas but there’s always a hankering – yes, hankering – to get back to the Lone Star State, politics aside. You don’t have to be born in Texas to be a Texan (but you do have to have a Texas locale on your birth certificate if you want a Native Texan car plate, which you can actually purchase), but you have to have been a resident and loved it and want to return. That’s what Lake Charles, LA native DON SMITH is doing…he’s setting free his Inner Texan and returning to San Antonio and the Tegna CBS affil there, KENS. He’ll be top wrangler for the creative, the official title being Marketing Director. He’s no stranger to SA, having worked at KENS once before when it was a Belo station. Don and his lovely family (his little boy is the cutest thing you can imagine!) will love living there. Confession – my son was born there and it’s a great place for little ones. Mr. Smith is departing his current role as Director of Creative Services at CBS’ KOVR/KMAX in California’s capital, Sacramento. Along the way, Don’s done promo for KHOU in Houston and his first job was at KBMT in Beaumont. Let’s not forget a stop in Salt Lake City and Stun Creative in NYC. So very excited to hear about a very happy creative talent and a city most loved. Get a big place..need a bedroom for next year’s Fiesta! Well Dunne! Don.

If KOVR/KMAX – CBS/CW in Sacramento – is looking even better than normal this week, it’s due to a change in the Art Department. Let’s start with brand new Art Director MIKE WIEBE, who was promoted after 8 very imaginative years doing all kinds of eye-catching things, including reinventing the Good Day look. Joining Mike as of this last Monday was BRIAN WHEATLEY whose title is News Graphics Manager. Yep, that means he’s fast, good and doesn’t let stress get to him. Brian comes to California’s capital from Great Falls, Montana (gorgeous gorgeous) where he worked at KRTV in a number of jobs, each more important, etc. He was tasked with the graphics look of 7 CBS stations. Getting around Hot-lanta is not going to be any trouble at all for LARRY WATZMAN. Of course, traffic is going to be worse than he remembers it. He’s going back to the Georgia capital as the Director of Marketing and Creative Services at Gannett’s WXIA. The move is actually a promotion from within the Gannett family, since he has been the head creative at their Buffalo, NY NBC affil, WGRZ. Larry and family are going to love the hub of the South and he’ll be returning to a city he knows from the days of working for CNN. He’ll be back in Dixie by the middle of September. Well Dunne! While the folks are convocatin’ in Vegas at the Station Summit, let’s turn our eyes east for some great news from one of the most talented guys around. BARRY FITZSIMMONS has a new gig and it’s awesome…he’s now the Global Creative Director of ONE World Sports. Added bonus – it’s in Connecticut, where Barry and family live. Barry’s accomplishments are so varied and impressive, it’s hard to start, but let’s just list a few: Creative Director On-Air for Katie, ESPN campaigns, HBO, MSNBC, Creative Director On-Air for Anderson and the list goes on. He’s not limited to TV….he’s a published author and just recently his PROMO COWBOY came out. Lovin’ it myself….you should pick it up, especially if you’re headed to the beach over the 4th. ‘The Hat’ is back. If you got that email and work at CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento, then you know it’s the way the station welcomed back PAUL KRAMER, now Promotion Manager under CSD DON SMITH. Paul wrote and produced at KOVR before heading across town to be Creative Services Production Manager at FOX affil KTXL. The San Francisco State University grad also worked at American Zoetrope – yep the Coppola and Lucas film studio. What did he do there in his seven years? He did just about everything. And how did he get the moniker ‘The Hat’? By wearing the same one. Easy question. A big Well Dunne to you Paul.
Abilene, Texas is just down the Interstate from Sweetwater, home of the big rattlesnake roundup. Yeah, not on the Bucket List, but interesting nonetheless. When the brave and bold KAREN YARBROUGH (KTAB’s Creative leader) showed up at said event, just this last Friday, she showed more chutzpah than anyone else I know in TV when she skinned a rattlesnake…yes, she really skilled a rattlesnake. I write about lots of great, creative people. But when you write about someone special, it’s the most fun. Today, it’s fun to tell you about DON SMITH. Mr. Don isn’t just muy creative, he’s also one of the good guys. And he’s been offered…and he accepted…the Creative Services Director job at CBS’ KOVR in Sacramento. He’s been there for a few years as Promo Manager, and this step into the “big chair” is going to be a real plus for the Sacto market. The station is very special to me…it was once owned by a friend’s father and was where a dear, departed colleague worked magic. Don fits into the KOVR family like a glove. He’s a southern gentlemen hailing from Lake Charles, LA and has worked for Belo at their San Antonio and Houston operations, KENS and KHOU respectively. He did a super job at Hearst’s WESH in Orlando and went west to Salt Lake City’s KTVX. Many of you know Don as the guy who puts together that super blog, Idopromoz. So I know you’ll join me in sending out a great big Well Dunne! Don. So happy and proud.
It’s a girl for Mama CANDACE HIRLEMAN ARCHER. Making her absolutely beautiful debut is Ella Kaliani Archer. Gorgeous Hawaiian middle name which mean Heaven. And she is one bit of heaven here on this planet. Candace is the VP of Creative Services at KGO in San Francisco. Wonderful news.

Out in Sacramento, KOVR Promo Manager DON SMITH had an interesting event the other night at dinner. A phalanx of police greeted him when he went out the door for dinner…seems there was a shoplifter who had mistakenly chosen the station parking lot as an escape route, and, well, after punching a cop, it all ended up being a very different dinner break for Don. BTW, he didn’t hit the cop – the shoplifter on the run did….but you knew that, right?

The lovely MELISSE MARKS is now at home in Cincinnati, where she is heading up the creative marketing efforts for Scripps’ WCPO, the ABC affiliate. The Fairfield, IL native knows her way around the ABC network…she was chairman and member of the network Marketing Advisory Board. The last few months, she’s been spending time on the west coast with her dad down La Jolla way (love that town!). Her new, official title is Director, Marketing and Creative Services. And she’s working for a former promo pro who’s now GM…no need to go into major explanations about why an Image campaign is important. Melisse, an SIU-Carbondale grad, was at Evanston’s WEHT and started in the biz via radio. A great big Well Dunne! Melisse.
CHRISTINA ROMENTO has a lot on her list, namely The List. It’s the syndicated show produced by Scripps in Phoenix. She’ll be leaving the wonderful DON SMITH behind at KOVR and Ms. heading to the Valley of the Sun. That makes about the fifth person to take the highway out of Sacramento to Phoenix (down the 5 to the 10). Ms. Christina has a cool resume that includes promo work in Austin and even working for Bunim Murray Productions. Well Dunne! Christina.

How can one find a great creative promo producer? Just the other day, DON SMITH of the Idopromoz site (and Promo Manager at KOVR) posted about the many, many openings for writers and producers. They’re getting to be scarce – very scarce – and the competition to hire them is strong. Even in an economy that tilts the balance toward employers, producers are in the drivers seat due to supply and demand. Here are some steps to make finding that perfect person a reality.
1 BE SPECIFIC ABOUT EXPECTATIONS
Think about what you want and then, think about what you need. Everybody wants a young Spielberg, but be reasonable. You might have to walk down your original specifics, especially if the producer slot opening will have a station-wide impact. Be specific and upfront. The candidates read job descriptions closely. An accurate picture of what you need will attract people who can do the job you describe.
“Target your most pressing need,” advises WNCN Creative Services Director STEVE PATRICK. “Right off the bat, narrow your search to the candidates who can fill that need. Then hire the one with the best attitude. Attitude trumps all.”
Ask fellow promo people if they know of anyone available. Your buddy in Fresno might have heard about someone that would be ideal for your opening on the east coast. Email and then phone (yes, the phone). It would be great if the right candidate just showed up on your doorstep in response to ads, but take a more proactive stance. Producers are hard to find and a little work will pay off in the end.
3 SOCIAL NETWORK
LinkedIn is perhaps the best social network site for finding a pro. If you aren’t on LinkedIn yet, you’re missing out.
JEFF FUNK, Creative Director, Innovation and Imagination at WGNO and NOLA38 states, “In this stage of the game, if you aren’t on LinkedIn, it’s a red flag to me. Like life, everything evolves. The marriage of social media and traditional media is the perfect example. LinkedIn is not only the largest electronic rolodex online, but also a valuable source of opportunity and creativity. Active participation in sites like LinkedIn and Slideshare not only highlights one’s ability to network on different levels regardless of industry, but it showcases one’s ability to actively push their own personal brands forward. There’s something to be said for engagers!”
4 PRODUCERS NETWORK

5 LOOK INWARD
“Grow your own,” advises 602 Communications’ GREG DERKOWSKI, himself a former CSD who has found himself in need of creative talent. “When you have someone on staff who you know — their work ethic, attitude, ambition, attendance, curiosity to learn more and contribute more — and that person shows a sincere interest in getting in the promotion game and has a good foundation to build on, that may be the way to go. Plenty of stations are doing this. And it’s a great reward for employees and it speaks well of your company when you promote from within.”
Corporate matching funds might be available to train your nearly-perfect pick. Or offer to pick up the tab for outside classes.
6 OFFER A CONTRACT
“If you find someone good, and train them to be just the way you want, then don’t let them go anywhere. Sign them to a personal services contract so that all that time, training and mentoring doesn’t go across the street and work against you.”
7 SOMEONE ALREADY IN TRAINING
Media savvy students are everywhere. Check out the colleges, universities, art schools, and performing arts academies in the area. What can begin as an enthusiastic intern can turn into an amazing find.
8 THE HR CONNECTION
HR people are as busy as promo people, so don’t expect them to focus on your opening alone. Every ownership group has their own procedures, so work with HR to help move the process along. Suggest to them a simple software program generating an email thanking candidates for contacting you (which should be mandatory). Your IT guy can make it happen for you.
9 MAKE THE HIRING PROCESS PERSONAL
By and large, communication is not happening in the communication business when it comes to the hiring process. Producers, communicators at heart, feel rejected if their emails, submissions or phone calls aren’t acknowledged. Take a moment and, let’s reiterate, at the least, send a return email thanking them for sending their info. It doesn’t take much time and makes a world of difference to the candidates.
10 LOCK DOWN YOUR CHOICE FAST
Several CSD’s are still smarting from going through the hiring process and losing their choice at the last minute – the choice took another job. Don’t let things drag out. Clear the hurdles and make sure your paperwork is all done before you even run an ad.
