Moving onward…and upward…is what so many creative do, because they’re just great at their jobs, but like a pinball game, the career path is never straight. It all adds up to terribly interesting opportunities, and the discovery of new talents and interests along the way. One lovely creative who is moving upwards is LINDSAY BLEDSOE, who has taken the Creative Lead position with Comcast in Indianapolis. No moving – hurray! Lindsay leaves her Assistant Creative Services Director slot at Scripps’ WRTV, the ABC affil. Ms. Linsday has a degree from Valpariso and was so good editing wedding videos, she landed her first TV job producing promos for Weigel in Milwaukee. She then slid over to do Topicals at WTMJ before moving to Indianapolis where she honed those innovative skills at WXIN for BOB ST CHARLES, so you know she’s the real deal. Well Dunne! Lindsay.
Think About This: “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” ~ Unknown, but it’s a Well Dunne! motto,
Besides knowing how to write, edit, plan, concept, do meetings, write reports and manage other creative people (think herding cats)…there are those TV marketing folks who take to the boards. Last night , WCIA’s PETE BARRETT was on stage in Champaign, IL, singing those Abba hits in the musical Mama Mia. Yes, he sings – and dances as well. Pretty amazing. Up Detroit way, DAVE BAUMANN, who is the Marketing and Creative Director of Stephen Arnold Music, has himself let his inner thespian loose this year when he was in Guys & Dolls. The photos were priceless. Back down in Maine, JOHN SCHRANK is a regular on stage in Portland when he’s not working promo-side at WGME. LEE COOLEY turned his CSD knowledge and now directs plays in the Phoenix market. Won a big award for it as well – a Zonie. So ladies, any of you have the actress bug?

It’s an early Christmas present for DYLAN SMITH. He’s got a great new job and will be moving to a market which offering ocean views, fresh seafood and long sandy beach walks. Dylan is the newest member of CSD SHERRY CARPENTER’s creative cabal at Graham Media’s WJXT in Jacksonville. He’ll officially be writing and producing for the esteemed WJXT after handling news promo and special projects at WRDW / WAGT in beautiful Augusta, GA, where he first began as a jack of all trades making TV happen. Sherry is all excited to have found him. As we all know, a good producer is pretty rare. Dylan will begin on Monday. Let’s hear a jolly Well Dunne! Mr. Smith.
While we’re on the subject of Graham Media, have you seen The Post? It should be required viewing. The story of Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and her courageous decision to publish the Pentagon Papers back in 1971. She helmed the paper as it went on to cover Watergate. She could have gone to jail for her pentagon decision; the FCC had teeth back then. But she decided that truth was more important than anything else. Orlando’s WKMG stands for Katherine Meyer Graham. We are in times that call for this kind of media leadership. If anybody knows where it is, please advise.

There have more than a few talented people who have made a switch from being part of the news departments to being part of creative services (aka marketing and or promotions), so when CHUCK HARRELL took a slot at Nexstar’s KRON in San Francisco in their news, well THAT makes it news-news. Not quite along the lines of Man Bites Dog, but still… Mr, Chuck is now the Digital Content Producer, taking all his talent, skills and tech know-how to their online sites. What a great idea. KRON is actually exploring different ideas to deliver news in a way today’s consumers (once called viewers) will use. Not just talk about it…doing. Excellent. Chuck has a background that includes doing promos for WNCN and WRAL in his native North Carolina as well as at KTVU and KGO in the Bay Area. At one time, he worked for Apple, so he is the go-to guy who can solve a problem if the IT folks are tied up. A big Well Dunne! to Chuck.

What a lovely holiday it was…hope you can say the same. Hope that this holiday will be filed under Great Memories and will make you happy when you call it up again. As to getting back to work, OK. But if you have that itch, perhaps one of these will scratch it.

Think About This: “It is now highly feasible to take care of everybody on Earth at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. It no longer has to be you or me. Selfishness is unnecessary. If you’re going to begin a new job, start on a short week. That’s great advice, eh? It’s what TOBY HERSHKOWITZE has done. He began the 19th as the new Multi Media Marketing Producer for WABC. He’s going to work with BRANDON NELSON’s crew (Brandon is Promotion and Digital Brand Manager) at Lincoln Square. Toby comes from ESPN up in Bristol, CT where for the last 8 years, he was Associate Producer for the weekly newsmagazine E:60. To quote Brandon, “You may have seen his handiwork on the amazing “Comeback Season” recently on Channel 7, a moving documentary on the return of sports after 9/11. While at ESPN, he won 3 Emmy Awards. He helped produced dozens of features and long-form profiles on everyone from Muhammad Ali to Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge.” NYC is where Toby calls home, so this is gonna be great. A big Well Dunne! to Toby and a thanks to Brandon.
Whether your idea of Thanksgiving means a big family gathering around a roast turkey, or a football marathon, nap, movie, online shopping, or even reading a book (yes, you can actually do that), may you find peace, happiness, and laughter. We are all so very blessed and lucky. This has been a rough year…let’s count our blessings and remember to do what we can to make the holiday season better for those who are not as lucky.
Think About This: An Irish blessing:
May God give you… For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, For every care, a promise, And a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, For every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer to each prayer.
It’s catch up week. Or ketchup if you like that sort of thing on your turkey sandwich. In the middle of the faster-than-fast pace we all live with, there have been some very talented people taking on new challenges that are finally getting some pixels via this post. Nothing personal…just a lot to keep up with and the days are shorter. Yes, they are. But let’s not let TORIN SCOTT’s San Francisco slot go unnoticed. Torin joined DEE JOYCE’s creative team at KPIX, CBS in the Bay Area. The Kent State grad started his working career in sales but jumped into TV marketing in Columbus, Ohio where he was Sr. Marketing Producer for Nexstar’s WCMH, all the while keeping his own Image 11 Films turning out some sweet work for clients like Victoria’s Secret. He joined the folks at KPIX in the spring. Sorry it took so long to share that great bit of news. Not only does Torin get a Well Dunne! but also a Happy Thanksgiving.

Think About This: “All endings are inexorably tied to new beginnings. That’s the nature of the journey. It continues to unfold. It builds on itself. It can’t help itself from doing that. Cherish the moments, all of them. You have seen and felt much in life so far. But still, the best is yet to come.” ~ Melody Beattie
He and his lady love had the best two names around. Hollywood names. The kind of names you’d hear in a Nancy Meyers rom-com. IRWIN STARR and CHARLIE VALENTINE. Ms. Charlie has been gone for quite some time now, but just Wednesday, IRWIN took his light into another room and left us here without him. He was a former TV General Manager, wrangling stations in DC, Portland OR, Alaska, and Albuquerque. He traveled internationally consulting TV operations all over, including the ‘stans’…Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan. Was he really in TV or was that a cover for being a spy? That question always made him laugh. He once ‘ran into’ a mutual friend on the streets of Beijing. Come on…does one REALLY run into someone by accident in Beijing? He left TV and settled in Sarasota, where he began a newspaper and organized, then managed the Media Roundtable. What an amazing group of TV people he gathered monthly during The Season, talking about the industry as only leaders could. Irwin loved keeping in touch with everybody and he loved his dog Bucky. A grad of the University of Michigan, Irwin’s family will be setting up a program there focusing on Ethics in Media. I urge us all to support that. Irwin loved art and his house was filled with it, each piece and painting a story unto itself. It was a fun ride, Irwin and you Dunne Well….

Seeing as there’s already snow in many markets, which seems to be ahead of most schedules, one thinks of warmer climes where ice is in glasses not on steps or roads. Which leads to the news that the long-unfilled Marketing Director slot at ABC in Tampa-St. Pete has been filled, affording ANDREW CALIENDO a winter of palm trees sans DeIcer. He’s transitioning from WCNC in Charlotte to WTSP, keeping the same title. Mr. C has lived in both ocean-side locales as well as deserts, having been promo head at KVIA in El Paso, Tucson, Phoenix and Birmingham. He also was News Promo Manager for KABC in LA, whose fire coverage was enhanced with technology that showed street names. Wow. It was so impressive. But back to the subject – Well Dunne! Andrew.
The day was ideal for Well Dunne!’s DENA YASNER’s coverage of the Phoenix Veteran’s Day Parade. She loves this assignment and shines in so many ways. You should call on her for smooth reads and projects.

It’s a double header. Not one but two marketing pros were tapped for overall station management slots while most of us were asleep. Great news no matter what. Let’s start with JEFF HOLUB who is now the Station Manager for WGCL, Meredith’s CBS in Atlanta, and WPCH. He’s been the CSD there and came after a long and successful run handling creative at FOX in the San Francisco market, legendary KTVU. That’s him in the picture. He sounded more smiley this morning. Well Dunne! Jeff.
Our twofer is SCOTT CHASTAIN, who many of you know from his time as EVP of Affiliate Marketing and Development at NBC. He’s headed to Lansing where he’ll be VP and GM for the CBS and ABC affils, WLNS and WLAJ respectively. Kudos to Nexstar to have the foresight to see that marketing people know how to run a station, know how to handle people, know how to make sales sing and are like Lake Wobegon children – above average. Scott is a Texas Aggie who has done marketing for stations in New Orleans (WDSU), WXII in Winston-Salem and KBTX in Bryan, TX. A big Well Dunne! Scott.
Marketing people don’t get the respect they so deserve and are rarely considered to run stations, which is a major disappointment. The question asked so often is “Why do so many people leave the TV marketing stations-side biz?” Well, there’s no upward mobility by and large. Put in the promo box, nobody asks how many promos one can oversee, write and produce before burn out sets in. Silly moi, I was always under the impression that the trade group was supposed to elevate the role of marketing and creative. Nope. Not even.

Out in California’s capital, AARON HEINRICH has taken the Marketing Director slot for ABC10, aka KXTV. His background is sterling and includes ASU, USC and Thunderbird, which is an amazing international business learning center. This is his first TV job after some exciting PR slots that include VPships at McQuerterGroup, Niehaus Ryan Wong, Manning Selvage and Lee, Ketchum, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide plus exciting consulting roles. He loves to write, as his Masters in screenwriting proves. Well Dunne! Aaron.

Yes, it’s election day, but we know that. Boy do we know that. Let’s relax today, allow the people to vote. What we’ll do head north…to Alaska. It’s what CHRIS HUSSEY has done now that he’s ensconced as Marketing Director of Dinali Media’s KTVA, CBS in Anchorage. Yes, he will see moose, as JOHN RICE did when he was in the 49th state. Hopefully pix will be posted. Chris, who has a degree from University of Wisconsin at Superior, is a wordsmith, who has been a freelance writer as well as a TV promo guy. He learned TV marketing at KBJR Quincy Media’s NBC in Duluth where he was Promo Manager as then CSD. He’s marketed newspapers, written about gaming, done podcasts and was a fitness instructor. He comes from his slot as Marketing Director of Quincy’s KWWL, NBC in Waterloo, Iowa. Well Dunne! Chris!

Let’s begin the week by letting a guest editor share his good news. Turning over to DAVID HERSHEY, who wrangles the creative at KTVT, CBS in the DFW market. Take it away David:
I’m pleased to announce the newest member of our 11/21 Creative Services team. EMILY THOMAS will be joining us as our newest Promotion Writer-Producer! She’s coming to us from the Nexstar Triopoly (yes, I said triopoly) in Youngstown, Ohio. There, she produces topicals, TSR’s and Image spots for three (yes I said three) network affiliates including ABC, Fox and CBS on a daily basis. She is also well-versed in the Wide Orbit world so that will be a good resource for us as well. We were very impressed with her tease-writing skills as well as her overall work-ethic. I think she will become a valuable part of our already-stellar creative services team. Emily has accepted Seth’s old position after he was promoted up to Senior Producer to replace Rhett. Her start date here will be November 26th. Well Dunne! Emily.

From the ‘it really isn’t late when you consider time as a whole’ department comes our spotlight on DAN MCGRANE, who earlier in the fall made the switch from Springfield, MO to Omaha, Nebraska, taking the Marketing Director slot at Gray’s NBC affil WOWT in the Cornhusker state. He’s a grad of the University of Iowa who got his foot in the TV door at WHO in Des Moines and then went to WCVB in Boston to hone those promo chops. From Boston, he took the Marketing Director slot at Gray’s KY3 in Springfield. He’s keeping it in the Gray family. Well Dunne! Dan.
Had a wonderful exchange with a well respected (and talented) CSD that led to the thought that TV marketing people today have to add the task of restoring trust in news. You heard it right…trust in news in general. Big job. Much much more coming up on that. Stay tuned.

Happy Halloween! Want to hear something scary? Hair-raising? Freightening all because it’s true? TV stations are the targets of crazy people right now, more than ever. Crazy and perhaps lethal people. In the last few days, there are at least two stations that have had to take drastic measures for their personnel’s safety. Up in Billings, KTVQ was the target of someone who left a suspicious box outside one of their entrances. The bomb squad blew up the box, which was covered in some strange writing and contained wires. The man responsible is now in psychiatric care. In Albuquerque, KOAT had two policemen stationed at their location because some nutjob was outside and could have been dangerous. All this in light of the mailed bombs. Out in Salinas, California, KSBW’s production van was set afire Friday night … on purpose. Arson is being investigated. One more time, with feeling…use your air. Use your talents. You can make people know things and understand them. Use those talents. The press is NOT the enemy of your viewers. Or your non-viewers. Or the population of your market. As you trick or treat today, remember there’s Godiva chocolate for the folks who send in their anti-hate, pro news actions. As they used to say on Hill Street Blues, stay safe out there. Don’t let Well Dunne! be a eulogy.

71 years in the broadcast biz. That’s the combination of SYDNEY RUBIN and her husband ALEX’s time doing TV marketing and shooting news, respectively. And, as the saying goes, they’ve been there and got the T-shirts, mugs, and branded items galore. Time to try another dance, and that they are. Syd is leaving her News Brand Manager slot at Tribune’s KCPQ in Seattle and Alex is turning his camera into the news ops guy there as well. The two are going to operate their Port Angeles, Washington B&B fulltime. Yes, they bought a B&B and it’s gorgeous. Maitland Manor. See for yourself – that’s the front as today’s picture. Syd’s a grad of the prestigious Syracuse Newhouse School of Communication and has worked in marketing in markets like Albany, Seattle, Colorado Springs. A consultant for Magid, she knows how to market like a major pro. It’s another loss to the collective marketing world of television. And it might even be an indictment to the way TV works today on a local level. Would say she’d be missed, but that’s not going to happen…we’re going to go see her in Port Angeles and enjoy her delicious cooking, in particular the jams and jellies that add the special je ne sais quoi to breakfast. She’s also going to serve Bailey’s Irish oatmeal. She’ll be around for a few more weeks, so reach out to her yourselves. Saying Well Dunne! seems rather less than called for. But Well Dunne! Rubins.

Wanted to kick off the week with a wonderful story about SYDNEY RUBIN, who has a fabulous adventure ahead of her, and it doesn’t involve TV. OK, she’ll have a TV and cable but her brilliant marketing chops won’t be part of the picture. Tune in tomorrow. It’s just too inappropriate to be happy snappy in light of the events of last week. Eleven dead due to an armed anti-semite in Pittsburgh. Two dead because of an armed racist in Louisville. An arrest in Florida of a right wing fanatic who had Unabomber aspirations. This has GOT to stop. You work in television. You have creative and air time available to you. You have a great deal of power to bring attention to events and the ability to sway hearts and minds. Hate is getting plenty of time on air; any newscast include the words ‘this statement is a lie’? Why not? People are afraid. A drunken, racist woman in Charlotte verbally assaulted two ladies waiting for the Auto Club to arrive and the ladies were afraid. People are attacking your reporters. It’s not like anything that’s ever happened in the US before, including 1968. So use your power to blunt hate.

Walking ‘across the street’ and up the ladder is COURTNEY LEITSCHUH, who has taken the CSD slot at Scripps’ WRTV, ABC in Indianapolis. She had recently been Senior Creative Marketing Producer at Nexstar’s CW affil WISH in that state’s capital city. Ms. Courtney kicked off her November sweeps for RTV Thursday, so it’s a busy fall. The U of Indianapolis – Bloomington grad has been Senior Creative Marketing Producer for WCPO in Cincinnati, NBC6 in Miami and was Director of Marketing in Fort Wayne at WANE. Let’s hear a very energetic and happy Well Dunne! Courtney!

ERIN MARTIN trained very hard and finished her first half marathon in Indiana recently. Sadly, the volunteers were not paying attention at the finish line. It’s always a big deal to finish ANY race and dear Erin had to go ask for her medal, instead of having it offered to her with smiles, congrats and even confetti. SO those of you who want to give an encouraging WAY TO GO to a star of life’s goals (and TV promo at one point) give her a loud, hearty Well Dunne! Erin.

Is news from Stun, the content studio and commercial production house in LA…is news from Stun stunning news? Yep – thought so too. We’re talking about news that’s also a brand new position to boot. Hmm, wonder if it has that new position smell… MATT LeBOUEF has been promoted to VP, Consumer Brands. Matt had been Senior Account Director at Stun before the promotion. Other stops along his career include Senior Producer/Head of Production at Big Machine Design and as an on-air promo producer for DIRECTV. Let’s hear it for the Emerson grad. Well Dunne! Matt.
BOBBY RIGG has a new title that’s even more important and impressive than the one he has now, which is President and CEO of his own production entity in Houston. Nope, better than that, Bobby is now Dad. He and the lovely Mrs. welcomed the most adorable little peanut the other day and to say everybody is happy is a major understatement. Nothing is better news than an adorable healthy baby. Well Dunne! Rigg Family. Hugs to you all!
