With all the energy going into the Mueller Report (or lack thereof) today, this Holy Thursday is shaping up to be more unusual than, uh, normal. Anybody find irony is the fact April 18 is the date when Paul Revere did his famous ride in Massachusetts? And the very day the American Revolution was declared over, beginning the long independent road to today. And the day of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Hmmm.
See what just happened there? It was a list of sorts. Which brings up to the new marketing guru at Scripps’ The List syndie. ALI GHARIB is his own guy but he’ll probably stick around handling promos and marketing. He comes to the desert from Charlotte where he was Sr. Writer Producer at Speed Channel/Fox Sports and was On-Air Promo Supervisor at the WB/UPN in the market. He’s a Florida Gator. Well Dunne! Ali.

As Ferris Buehler told us, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t slow down and look around, you might miss it.” And so it has been. So many life lessons in the times away, looking around. Such changes….such life impacting happenings. People being born….graduating….making a comeback that brings tears to eyes….learning from failures that appear to overwhelm…giving up and persisting and questioning. All these changes but we keep going along like before, getting upset in traffic, or when we spill a coffee, or when we feel rushed. Not real problems but yet they do impact us. Let’s vow to slow down and look around. Spend time with work that values efforts. Be with people who make us happy. It’s spring. New beginnings. New energy.

Most business travel while heading up creative, programming and other TV endeavors isn’t very exciting. I mean, Vegas for Promax doesn’t even warrant a ‘meh’. But ERIK CANDIANI has managed to not only get out of the office; he’s headed to Georgia. Not the state…nope. To the Georgia that’s 5,860 miles from his desk as Marketing Director for WWBT, NBC in Richmond, VA. The Georgia that’s off the Black Sea and northeast of Turkey. Tbilisi is the target and the capital as well. It’s a special trip put together by the State Department and Eric is going to get to help out the marketing for one of the TV stations (or networks…sorry not sure what the country of Georgia calls their broadcast outlets). Not too shabby as they say. He’ll be at TV Pirvelli and have his own interpreter. No doubt he’ll have some very insightful stories about their operations and marketing when he gets back. Have a blast and Well Dunne! Erik.

Heading to the amusement capital of America, ie Orlando, FL is Roger, uh, no it’s RON DEJOSEPH. He’s set to take over the CSD slot at WFTV, the ABC affil in the Big O. The Cox-owned station gets Ron from sister station WHBQ, Fox, in Mempis. Before Memphis, he was at WSOC in Charlotte as Promo Manager. He’s an amazing competitor and a great guy who has a lovely dog. I bet the Lake Cherokee dog folks will welcome you both once you get to your new city. Ron has also edited for ESPN. Way to go rog…Ron! Well Dunne!

The world is a quieter place today. The most beautiful voice has been silenced on this side of the veil. JACQUELINE SKYLARK ROSETTI, who was known to so many as the Honolulu Skylark, had the voice of an angel. Like the gentle trade winds through the palms on Oahu – a voice that was pure Aloha. She was on the radio at KCCN in the Islands, and her understanding of Hawaiian history, music and people was like no other. She was one of the most popular and well known radio personalities. Enjoyed a long, leisurely lunch with Skylark and Kimo Kahoano, learning so much about Hawaiian radio and Hawaiian music. She did voice work for Well Dunne! but her failing health got in the way of many of her favorite things. She spent the last several years on the Big Island. RIP Skylark.

Spring has finally come around, at least because of the vernal equinox. Hope you are looking at spring green buds and those fragile first blooms that manage to appear, even through snow.
Quick lesson on hiring, from an HR expert and a creative now turned GM. Question: Do you need to post a job opening if you promote someone already on staff in the same area of work? No. I was surprised as well, but if you take someone in creative and advance them by adding new related job responsibilities, you don’t have to post the job. But then you don’t get to replace that person’s old job. Hope that was easy to understand. It’s an overview, a Cliff Notes kind of info bit.

Yes, it’s cold in Minneapolis-St. Paul (as of this writing, the Weather Channel reports 21 degrees with snow coming in Saturday) but somebody has a hot new job. That somebody is MANDY TADYCH who is now handling the duties of CSD on a fulltime basis at Hubbard-owned KSTP, ABC in the Twin Cities. The Minnesota lady has been Director of Programming in addition to handling Exec producing for their daily show, Twin Cities Live. She’ll continue to handle Programming. The College of St. Benedict grad has also worked producing at KARE and Twin Cities Public TV. A warm Well Dunne! Mandy.

Think About This: “Finding yourself is not really how it works. You aren’t a ten dollar bill in last winter’s coat pocket. You are also not lost. Your true self is right there, buried under cultural conditioning, other people’s opinions, and inaccurate conclusions you drew as a kid that became your beliefs about who you are. Finding yourself is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hands on you.” ~ Emily McDonwell
The Chinese have a curse that goes something like this: May you live in interesting times. Well that’s happening. Looking at the microcosm of entertainment marketing, there is less job changing in the creative side of the biz than there are moving GMs and News Directors. Which is unusual, since the ‘crazy creative people’ are always looking for another mountain to climb. Ergo less WD!T blog.
Is anybody interested in knowing about temporary marketing leaders? Several major stations owned by major owners (of course, that means most of them right?) are filling creative marketing leadership roles temporarily. Perhaps they are trying out the person-company match? Or are they saving money or looking better than reality on a balance sheet? Asking and if the answer is yes, then there’ll be several new columns coming your way.
Tip of the hat to new News Director JOHN KIRBY, who’s handling the news at Grand Junction’s KREX and accompanying operations. John’s open to giving kids their first job, so if you know anybody, send them John’s way. Well Dunne! Mr. Kirby. Your mother would be happy…

What a great voice KEN HYDE has. No, he’s not one of Well Dunne! Talents voices, he’s the new Creative Services Director at KIVI in Boise. So new, this is his first week. Ken sounds great because he has a background of being on-air in his role as Sports Anchor and Reporter for Springfield, MO’s KSPR and Sports Director of WOTV in the Battle Creek – Kalamazoo market. The University of Arkansas Fayetteville grad then went west to Boise where he did marketing, PR and digital content management for te Hawks Baseball Club, part of the Colorado Rockies organization. Before the KIVI slot, he was owner of a multimedia communications company. So glad to hear (pun intended) of his new job at the ABC affil in the potato state. Well Dunne! Ken.

Things are sunny in California, particularly in Fresno, where TIM SARQUIS has gotten a very interesting promotion. His new title is Executive Producer of Content Development at ABC30 in Fresno. Yes, it’s an ABC OandO. Let me turn this over to Tim for details: For the past 3 years, I have served as the Creative/Marketing lead at ABC30. I’ve learned so much in this role and have met many great people in the community and within the Disney/ABC group. But as someone who yearns to get their hands dirty in the creative process, managing just didn’t allow the time for that. So I’m excited to announce that I’ll be moving into a new role as Executive Producer of Content Development at ABC30! In this role I’ll be creating new content, whether it’s promotion, community, long-form or short-form, linear or digital. The fact that I once again get to write, shoot, edit and design on a full-time basis has me so excited to tell new stories, in new ways! Looking forward to what’s to come! That deserves a great big Well Dunne! Tim.

Trying new things is how we grow. Trying something new and deciding it’s not what you wanted it to be then changing back to something is a major lesson and one that shows the solid character of a person. Classify JEREMY MOORE as a solid character; knowing yourself is a key to a happy life. Jeremy has been wrangling the creative for Terre Haute’s WTWO and WAWV, NBC and ABC in the Wabash Valley. He did a great job, but he really liked being Operations honcho better. He had that job before taking on creative. So the good folks at Nexstar have let him post his now open Creative Services Director slot while he can attend to the operations of the duopoly. It’s a solid operation with a good GM, a super sales guy who used to handle creative (shout out to TIM SANDERS) and a good ND. Wow…hit them up for the slot. You’re welcome. Well Dunne! Jeremy.

I know we should all be biting our nails in anticipation of the Oscars this Sunday, but the buzz is pretty flat, imo. However, MANNY THE MOVIE GUY (former CSD Manny De La Rosa) has his predictions. Click here.
Over at NBC in the Desert, Marketing and Creative Services guru MATT PARISE is going to be watching tennis courtside while his station is the media sponsor for BNP Parabas tour stop. Nice. Well Dunne.

You know how important networking is. No need to re-sing that chorus. But with the time crunches we all face, finding ways to perhaps do more networking with less effort. Perhaps streamline some portion of your networking profile. Then you should get to know TAMMY PHILLIPS. She’s the new Senior Corporate Recruiter for Nexstar, focusing on News and Marketing. She’ll be looking for great talent for all the Nexstar chain, and with that many stations, she’s someone to know. Before the Nexstar job, she had recruited for Raycom. The Arkansas State grad knows a lot about the biz, having worked news as Producer, EP and News Director. Well Dunne! Tammy.
While on the subject of recruiting and the like, let’s throw out the idea that job titles today might need some rethinking. Here’s where your marketing skills can be of great value. Perhaps walking folks through the steps of How To Be Clear and Say What You Mean might help alleviate some of the convoluted titles that muddy what the job really entails. Throwing all the duties one does in today’s marketing world is not a good idea. If you have to extend the title to another line on the biz card, or if you look at the title and are confused, then time to revert to the time-honored ways we used to identify Managers, Directors, VPs and the like. And I’d like to discuss the Success Manager title with the person who dreamed that up.

If you’re a TV marketing ace, Tucson has it going on . You know that former Raycom corporate creative wrangler LEC COBLE is the new Station Manager for Tegna’s Fox/MyTV operation in the Sonoran Desert. Well, now another Tucson station has chosen a new GM from the creative pool. KARA MCNEELY is going to embark on a new adventure as the GM of Scripps ABC affil, KGUN and the CW affil KWBA. She knows ABC well having been VP of Brand Strategy, Audience Development and Programming at KABC in Los Angeles and the Disney ABC Group. She began her promo career in Cincinnati at WCPO, which is Scripps. She’s worked in marketing, brand, promo and programming in Miami for NBC and for two stations in Indianapolis. So the folks in Tucson get it…the whole gorgeous city deserves kudos. Kara is a mom as well. Let’s hear two Well Dunnes…one for Ms. Kara and one for making CSD’s GM.

Getting hired on to a fulltime job is not only a promotion, but it’s an acknowledgement of a person who fits into the group dynamic. Plus it shows a company that values what you can bring while ensuring you have a paycheck to count on. Very nice all round. Up in Utica at Nexstar’s WUTR, this very Monday is the beginning of COLTON SHANAHAN’s full time gig doing production and promo. It’s not his first job…no. The talented Colton has run camera and directed a short film. He earned degrees in Cinema Screen Studies and Audio Production. Well Dunne! Colton.
The newest member of the VP club got his stripes before the end of the year, but with January being the longest 31 days in a long time, we’re finally getting around to sending out the kudos and congrats. After holding down the creative fort at NBC in DC for quite some time, PATRICK STAPLETON has been given the title he so well deserves: Vice President Brand Marketing. Very good news and a reason for a hearty Well Dunne! Patrick.

The old show biz caution ‘don’t work with animals or children’ was proved untrue by the talented crew of 2C Media’s recent project for Animal Planet. They found the cutest dog for the promo for, what else, Puppy Bowl XV. A French Bulldog. Awww. But wait, there’s more. Set to the Motley Crew tune, Home Sweet Home, the notorious band donated their fee to animal rescue. What’s not to like? There’s lots of live action, VFX and sound design on display to boot. Well Dunne! Animal Planet and 2C. Check it out on Vimeo by clicking here.

Things are C-O-L-D and you don’t need any more clichés or smarty pants taunts about it. Perhaps a few ‘drop in’ comments for those who are toughing it out might warm things up. Like WGBA CSD MATTHEW SMITH, who will see negative 23 in Green Bay today (Wednesday) instead of only negative 15 at his former station in Detroit. The cold weather might keep Stephen Arnold Music’s DAVE BAUMANN from his thespian turn in The Music Man at the Berman Center…they debut on Thursday so it’s still undetermined. They have snow up to there as well. There will be no mail delivery in Iowa. Like ALL of Iowa…no mail Wednesday. None in Wisconsin, and parts of Illinois and Minnesota and Missouri and – you get the idea. BOB ST CHARLES, CSD at FOX59 in Indianapolis (Wednesday low predicted to be negative 30 with wind chill) has a fireplace and a dog, so that’s one way to hunker down. Don’t do anything stupid, people. Or to quote my dad, don’t freeze anything off you might need later…

Think About This: “You can’t skip chapters; that’s not how life works. You have to read every line, meet every character. You won’t enjoy all of it. Some chapters will make you cry for weeks. You will read things you won’t want to read; you will have moments when you don’t want the page to end. But you have to keep going. Stories keep the world revolving. Live yours; don’t miss out.” ~ borrowed from a good friend who can’t remember who wrote it.
Austin, Texas isn’t just the capital of the Lone Star State. It’s a market that has grown like kudzu. It’s only fault, besides occasional crippling humidity, is distance from any beach. But there’s so much more, including Willie Nelson. Add CHANEL WANG to the list of cool things now in Austin. Chanel has a new producer slot at Nexstar’s KXAN, the NBC affil. Chanel comes west from North Carolina, where she had her first TV job at WNCT in Greenville under MARC MORRISTON. She has her degree from East Carolina U where she also was Lead Graphic Designer, whose work was the basis for her marketing career. Well Dunne! Chanel!
Uber-talented MARK VALENTINE has some exciting news. He’s taking his ANATOMY and joining forces with Leroy & Clarkson. He’s going to be Chief Creative Officer working alongside Leroy & Clarkson’s KATE HILLIS, COO. Yep, they’ll be able to do it all for you. Well Dunne! you two.

Think About This: “Don’t break a bird’s wing and then tell it to fly. Don’t break a heart and then tell it to be happy. Don’t see the worst in a person and expct them to see the best in you. You cannot expect to give hate and receive love. So if you’re willing to see positive changes in your life, you must be willing to be that change itself.” ~ Najwa Zebian
It’s always so warming to watch and hear about someone embarking on their career. It’s like watching flowers bloom, in a way. One such budding talent just took a job as a producer for CSD MARC MORRISTON at Nexstar’s WNCT, CBS in Greenville, NC. Welcome to BRYCE SAWYER. Her hire underscores that networking is gonna be your best friend. I’ll let Marc explain: “She is from North Carolina and interestingly applied for a News Producer position, the News Director brought me her resume saying it was probably more a fit for Marketing. Her resume was sitting on my desk when my now former Producer, who’s at KXAN, was talking with me and saw it. She said ‘I know her, we went to school together at ECU’ and gave her a big thumbs up. From there we brought her in for an interview and hired her. Talk about the resume being in the right place at the right time.” The ECU is East Carolina U and she has an MFA in Film Producing from North Carolina School of the Arts. Shall we all give Bryce a big Well Dunne!
Friday is shaping up to be a great TGIF…more than the average because they’re all good, right?! This Friday finds Well Dunne! Talent’s KELLY PIDGEON kicking on the day by being the interviewee on Pittsburgh’s Y108, talkinga bout his band, Boats Against the Current, who are set to perform Friday evening at Indiana, PA hotspot Off the Rocks. Anybody literate enough to get the name of the band? Kelly was, at one time, an English teacher at a prestigious prep school.. Now he’s voicing when he’s not music-ing.
And let’s not overlook that Friday is considered to be National Irish Coffee Day. Excellent. Indeed. Comport as you see fit.
