That whole circle of life thing…anybody else struggle with that? Not the new life part…the beginning of it all part, but the end part. The departure. How does one NOT miss someone that you loved, or liked, or worked with, or made you laugh? It’s always such an honor to write about a TV creative who has departed. Not because they have departed, but because they left those creative parts of themselves behind in the form of their work, and memories, and connections. One such departure of late was ROY ROGERS MAINE, JR. In addition to his totally fab name, he left a legacy of being, as described by co-creative BOB WOOLEY, a one-in-a-million guy. As Bob shared, “Smart as they come, a true renaissance man if I ever met one. Roy had studied quantum physics for a time before I believe switching to film studies at UNLV. He was a gifted creative who had travelled the world running AV and producing video on several large cruise ships. He was the father of a young son, and he will be missed by everyone who ever had the privilege to work with him.”  He took his light into another room unexpectedly on June 8. He and Bob worked together at KLAS in Vegas. Today, remember this light that’s now gone, and strive to have your life be remembered with such glowing affection and admiration. He worked in Seattle and a celebration of life is planned for there July 7th. Contact me for details.

Topographically, the US is incredibly diverse. From the deserts of the Southwest to forests of the Pacific Northwest….the grassy plains of the Midwest to the Southeast lowlands and the vibe of the east coast – it’s all different and exciting. Creative people love making the switch from one place to another, and HENRY VASQUEZ  is one such soul. He’ll be heading back to the east coast, where the New Yorker calls home, as the new Vice President Director of Brand and Digital Development at Tribune’s WTIC, the CBS affiliate in Hartford.  Henry is going to cash in his chips, so to speak, as CSD of Nexstar’s KLAS in Las Vegas. For the last several years, Henry and his lovely wife have been bi-coastal and they’re looking forward to more time together.  Henry actually began his career at Tribune as Creative Services Assistant in NYC at WPIX. Down in Philly he was Promo Manager for WCAU as well as promo producer for KYW, WPVI and WCAU. Yep he ran the Philly promo table. Mr. V has an MBA and now a very impressive new business card. Hope he plays a hot slot before heading out…he’s on a great streak. Well Dunne! Henry.

This Tuesday, we focus our sights on Toledo, Ohio. Home to M*ASH’s Max Klinger played by Jamie Farr, who himself was from Toledo! Casting lady take a bow. Toledo is where Katie Holmes and Gloria Steinham called home. Where National Lampoon founder PJ O’Rourke and the voice of cartoon characters like Deputy Dawg Dawes Butler came from. There’s been two switches in Toledo, but we’ll focus on one today and one tomorrow. Step in to the spotlight RYAN SPEER, who has been promoted to the lead creative, aka Promotions Director of WTVG, Gray’s ABC affil. Ryan’s been a writer/producer for them and this is the perfect step. He’ll be a home run hitter for sure. The Bowling Green, KY man (he graduated from Bowling Green U majoring in telecommunications) has also been Chief Video Editor at Goodwyn Production Group. A big Well Dunne! Ryan!

Chicago is a great city. A solid, vibrant town that loves food, family and doing a great job. And it’s quite the sports town, what with the Cubs winning the World Series just to name one sports achievement. It’s a good thing for NIKKI WASSERMAN, who’s heading to Chi-town to work with JAY WADHWA’s creative team at Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Yes, she’s a huge sports fan and a fab creative. CSD HENRY VASQUEZ is going to miss her as are all the folks at KLAS in Vegas. She’s a Ft Myers, Florida lady who went to college in Pennsylvania. She interned at WPVI in Philly and worked at WFTX in the Naples market. She’s a real go-getter. She’ll be staying in Vegas til the end of the February book, so there’s lots of time to hit her up with a Well Dunne! Nikki.

Job Alert – Promo Producer KCPQ/KZJO Seattle (working with the #1 best promo person around and that’s not up for discussion..SYDNEY RUBIN!)

If you’re sleepless in Seattle, it’s because there are too many amazing things to see and do in this Pacific Northwest gem. Now’s your chance to join our Seattle based creative team at KCPQ/Q13 and KZJO/Joe TV. We’re looking for a promo producer who can bring their talent to driving late news viewership in primetime and across our social platforms. Topicals? Yes, but we’re not like other news stations. We have our own attitude and brand focus and our topicals have to reflect that unique viewpoint. If you can do it all – write, produce, shoot, edit – we want to talk to you. If you want to push new concepts to move audiences in social media, we want to talk to you. If you want to live in a city that offers oceans, lakes, mountains, and one of the most vibrant cultural scenes in the country, (and no state income tax!), you’ll want to talk to US!

Show us why our team should be your team. Send your resume and reel (links preferred) to srubin@kcpq.com and apply online at tribunemedia.com/careers.

Let’s start February with an apology going out to KLAS CSD HENRY VAZQUEZ, whose name I have accidently misspelled not once, not twice….yeah, red face on this side of the net. It won’t happen again, which is good because Mr. Vazquez shared a change and deserves all the kudos associated with that.  It’s not really good news for KLAS, but it’s great news for ASHISH BANTHIA, who is headed to Dallas Fort Worth to be Brand Design Manager for NBC’s KXAS. Creative Head Honcho GARY WANN in DFW created the job for the Kolkata, India native, thus proving that not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Ashish has an MFA in Computer Arts from Memphis College of Art and got his first TV job in Memphis as a Graphic Designer at WREG, working with LES POLLARD. Next stop for Ashish was the Norfolk market and a Design Director slot at WAVY/WVBT. The one and only LEE MINARD lured him west to KLAS where he’s been highlighting his art to the delight of everyone. Yes, people actually groaned when Ashish announced he’d be leaving – but everyone is happy for him and his fam. Big Well Dunne! Ashish.

Best wishes to WSAV’s CSD DAN FLAXER who popped the question this week…and of course the answer was ‘yes!’. Put him on the ‘His Heart is Taken’ list. Savannah is such a romantic town…

What are the odds of finding a super producer…quickly? Vegas odds were with HENRY VASQUEZ, CSD of KLAS in the very town giving out betting advice. Henry found DAVID ISBEL and immediately put him to work as Senior Producer at the Nexstar operation. David’s got a lot going for him, besides writing, producing and editing. He speaks fluent Estonian and his last name, spelled IsBel (yes, both the I and B are capitalized) is French Basque. Tres international. Mr. I hails from Portland and grew up watching KPDX, becoming a huge fan of Rambling Rod. Who is Rambling Rod you ask? He’s the very person on which The Simpsons’ Matt Groenig based Krusty the Klown. (Remember that – you never know when you might want to be on Jeopardy.) The Colorado Tech grad has worked in Palm Springs as well as KTNV and KSNV in Vegas. Besides a great boss, great new job, David has a 6 month old with the most electric name – Harlow. He replaces GREG SLEEPER who’s Sr. Producer for WCVB in Boston. Must check in with Greg to see what he thought of that blizzard. A big Well Dunne! to David!

Still waiting for CBSSports.com PR to respond to the question I sent about the end of that Broncos/Pats game. I guess the snow is the excuse. Will keep you posted.

“I was only there such a short time when the call came.” This is how the conversation with GABE LUNA began. Gabe is a major favorite (thank you LAUREL PORTIE) and a totally creative ‘One To Watch’ who is the new Promotion Manager of Scripps’ KGUN in Tucson. The call he refers to is one from his father, who had gotten the green light for a double lung transplant. Of course Gabe had to be there, so into the car he jumped and drove I-10 to San Antonio, no doubt in record time. His boss at KGUN, ANDY SCHWABE, and the rest of the management team was supportive, even with the November ratings book workload. Now THAT, people, is a good operation. Andy is a leader who described his new hire this way: “He’s going to bring fresh creativity and energy to our already fantastic group of talented marketing professionals." Papa Luna is slowly recovering, and if you have any extra good thoughts you might want to send them his way. Gabe is back in Arizona, hard at work at KGUN and has a plateful of blessings for which to be thankful next Thursday. Gabe is a San Antonio guy who attended SAC (San Antonio College, which is nearly next to the best restaurant in town) and worked as Production Director of the Trinity Broadcasting Network before jumping into promo work at Sinclair’s operation in the Alamo City. He also honed his promo chops in Seattle. Get Well to Gabe’s dad and Well Dunne! to Gabe.

Sending condolences to KLAS CSD HENRY VASQUEZ who lost his mother this week.

Whenever there’s news out of ABC Network, it almost seems as if the news is done in alphabetical order. It isn’t of course, but the news today is from ABC. A promotion. JOHN ROUSE is now Executive Vice President of Affiliate Relations and Marketing of the alphabet net. Formerly the Senior VP, the USC grad started at KNBC doing sales and joined Disney after being an AE for MGM/UE. Lots of initials. Great guy. Sing along to the tune of the Mickey Mouse Club farewell song: Now it’s time to say Well Dunne to John at ABC. E-V-P…A-B-C…R-o-u-s-e.”

Job Alert – KLAS, in Vegas (located just off The Strip – really…talk about location!) has a wonderful CSD. HENRY VASQUEZ. He’s on the hunt for a Senior Writer Producer and you actually need to consider what an opportunity that is. As they say on Game of Thrones….winter is coming. Is there a better place for wintering than Vegas? Or more fun than KLAS?

Wednesday is Veteran’s Day, and if you’re lucky enough to be in the Valley of the Sun, be sure to check out Well Dunne! Talent’s DENA YASNER who is announcing the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. It starts at 11 on North Central at Montebello then turns on Camelback east to 7th then south to Indian School. Come on out and show these men and women you are grateful for their service. And say hi to Dena…she’s a doll.

Gonna be sending GREG SLEEPER a warm muffler to use come January. He’s heading to Boston to work with CSD RUSS NELLIGAN at ABC affil WCVB; official title Assistant Creative Services Director. It will definitely be a change from Las Vegas, where he’s been kickin’ it as Senior Writer Producer at KLAS under tres cool CSD HENRY VAZQUEZ. Greg is going to enjoy the east coast, having spent most of his career out west. He’s a Navy vet who went to University of Utah and got his first job in TV at Park City Television producing Olympic spots before doing news promo for Salt Lake City’s KSTU. He has been a promo producer for American Forces Network in Riverside, CA and was a field producer for Davis Epps Media. Safe travels to Boston, Greg. You’ll arrive just in time to plan a trip to see all the fall colored leaves in New Hampshire. A very big Well Dunne!

There’s the adage that goes something like this: a company can only show it values you through credit and or compensation. Very true in Hollywood, and not far from the mark everywhere else. It’s no wonder that stations are having a very difficult time keeping creative people when other lines of work offer more compensation. Makes sense actually (reference grocery prices). KELLI JONES is leaving the creative department of WTSP in the Tampa-St Pete market (CBS affil owned by Gannett) and is going to become involved in a new fulltime gig that will put a lot more green in her bank account, sans the stress and repetition. These stories are happening all the time. Kelli will be missed for sure. Well Dunne!

He’s OK. The car accident that Well Dunne! Talent’s JEFF O’NEIL’s son was involved in has resulted in no serious injuries. Every parent sighs in relief.

Not everything that happens in Vegas says in Vegas. Thus the picture of Well Dunne!’s KELLY PIDEON and those crazy fun folks who do promos at KLAS. HENRY, GREG and the lovely lady..Well Dunne!

MICHELE JARVIS is a Midwest lady who is doing an amazing job in LA (despite the heat) and is tearin’ things up as Principal and Creative Director of 68 Pictures, the trailer/promo and design house. She’s been doing uber-creative things along the way, like being Director of Affiliate Marketing at FOX Broadcast group…and Creative Services Director at Indianapolis’ WXIN/WTTV…and producing some of those eye catching and award winning spots WBNS is noted for. All from her first TV gig at WREG in Memphis. Michele, you deserve a well crafted and well earned Well Dunne!

OK, let’s see who was paying attention. Raise your hand if you know about Area 51. Good…you’re aware. So, did anybody see the KLAS TV story about Area 51? Amazing…KLAS broke the Area 51 story and the rest is…well, you know. Uber super cool. Just in case you missed it, Catch it here…and btw, that is indeed Well Dunne! Talent’s KELLY PIDGEON introing the news in the second video….
