Remember last December when B&C named Cleveland’s MICKI BYRNES the GM of the year? Well, Ms. Micki did it again and nabbed the GM of the year for the Tegna chain. She’s a former promo pro who is obviously one fab leader at WKYC. Does that give any of you big chains any ideas? No? Why the heck not? Yeah, you know who you are…
The gates of heaven have been swinging wide open of late. Word comes via RONN KILBY that voice talent DOUG PAUL has passed away in the Atlanta area. If you want info on the memorial, etc, please let me know. Doug had a one-of-a-kind sound and you have all heard him on the many promos he did for networks across many decades. God bless you, Doug.
And yes, there was no WOMAN WRITING done yesterday. It was a day without…

Yep, a marketing pro turned GM was just named GM of 2016 by Broadcasting & Cable Mag. Let’s hear it (and I mean put some moxie into it) for MICKI BYRNES, GM of WKYC, Tegna’s NBC affil in Cleveland. Anybody who knows her is clapping right now. Micki has done Creative Services, Promotion and all manner of PR for stations in Atlanta, Boston and San Francisco as well as WKYC. She’s served on boards (some of us were lucky enough to do that with her) and been a leader in many ways. Leading WKYC was a natural step and one she has handled with award-winning aplomb. Can’t imagine any reason why more Marketing types aren’t being given the key to the corner offices. Look to Micki as inspiration. Well Dunne! Micki.

TRAVIS DENT is heading to Lawton, OK this week to be the Marketing Director for KSWO, the ABC affil owned by Raycom in the Wichita Falls, TX market. Yes, Google Lawton and you’ll see it’s a mere 52 miles north of Falls Town, and if you drive it, you’ll pass through some of the richest oil country ever. Lawton was home to actress Joan Crawford for a few years back when her daddy ran the movie theatre there….and Lawton is the name of a suburb of Havana. You’re all now ready for Jeopardy. Back to Travis, who’s going to depart Louisiana where he’s been Promotion Manager at Nexstar’s WGMB in Baton Rouge. Travis was also in charge of commercial production and did creative producer roles for KMSS in Shreveport. The Savannah State grad is gonna have a blast in this very different landscaped part of the country. Remember the Red River is the dividing line between Longhorns and Cowboys and Sooners! A big Well Dunne! Travis!
Well Dunne! to WKYC’s President and General Manager MICKI BYRNES. The former promo pro was honored as one of the Cleveland YMCA’s 2016 Women of Achievement. Micki deserves all honors.

Ending the year with a reason to drag out the fireworks and kick off 2015 in style is none other than MICKI BYRNES, who so many of us know from her days as promo pro in Atlanta, San Francisco and Cleveland. Ms. Micki is the one who welcomed many new promo folks to the fold and served on boards for both ABC and NBC. At Gannett’s WKYC in Cleveland, she’s been Station Manager for a bit, and now has been named President and General Manager. Yep, the big chair is hers and she’ll do an EXCELLENT job, not only because she knows every single aspect to the broadcast game (and not just sales like some do…) but because she’s smart and talented and fair. Lucky folks at WKYC for sure. A big Well Dunne! Micki.
On the other side of the country, RODGER O’CONNOR is taking his talents and skills to a new job, leaving behind the good folks at KOIN in Portland and becoming the Director of Marketing for the Northwest Credit Union Association. He’s been Sales Marketing Manager as well as CSD at KOIN as well as a promo and commercial producer at KIRO in Seattle and KBAK in Bakersfield. Well Dunne! Rodger.

This country seems to define itself by what body of water is nearest. The Atlantic means the east coast….the Gulf refers to the southern states which get to have more shrimp than the rest of us…the Mississippi divides us in half…and the Pacific calls out to come across the vast empty west and watch sunsets in the land of opportunity. Heading from the banks of the Mississippi (metaphorically speaking) to the golden west is JOEL FLOWERS, who is embarking on a trek from Sikeston, MO to Thousand Palms, CA, where Mr. Flowers will be hitting the world of TV marketing as a writer producer for CSD KENT KAY at KESQ. The University of Tennessee at Martin grad has been polishing his marketing craft working in radio, where deadlines and marketing messages are the same as TV. In his new job, Joel will be reunited with his old radio on-air co-host, SALLY SAPUTO; the two of them were a hot item and from the sound of things, they will continue to be for News-Press & Gazette Co’s operations. Well Dunne! and safe travels Joel. Don’t fall over when you see the price of petrol in Needles.
Congrats and Well Dunne! to WKYC’s MICKI BYRNES with her new title VP/Station Manager at Gannett-owned NBC affil.. She’s a creative – been a marketing pro in Boston, Atlanta and San Francisco as well as most recently VP of Advertising and Promotion in Cleveland. Always loved her work and working with her on the NBC Promo Board. She also did a campaign that still ranks as one of my favorites ever.
Thoughts and prayers going out to Well Dunne! Talent’s DENA YASNER‘s father recovering from heart surgery.

Lots going on at Gannett’s NBC affil, WKYC, in Cleveland. It all began with the promotion of one of my all-time favorites MAC MAHAFFEE who was named Digital Marketing Manager, one of those cutting edge jobs that remind me of the “where no man has gone before”. So, that having happened, following took place.
Kent State alum MONIQUE JACKSON has been promoted to Creative Services Director. Monique has been at WKYC doing creative promotions for quite some time, so this is exciting for all involved.
STACY YACOBOZZI (that’s her in the picture) got promoted to Manager of On-Air Promotion and Media. The Baldwin Wallace College grad has done a lot of special events and also done promotion at crosstown WEWS.
New to the mix is Writer- Producer DAN CANTERNA, who moved north from his promo slot at FOX in Cincinnati. He has a degree from Ohio State and worked as a Graphic Designer at Raycom’s Myrtle Beach, SC station.
All this of course no doubt makes VP of Advertising and Promotion MICKI BYRNES a very happy lady. Well Dunne! Monique, Stacy, and Dan.

Think About This: “For attractive lips – speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes – seek out the good in people. For a slim figure – share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair – let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise – walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” ~Sam Levenson
Let’s hear a drum roll along with the sound of confetti being thrown and perhaps a nice background of trumpets. Over the top? Not for MAC MAHAFFEE, who is one of the super guys in the TV marketing world. And he’s been given a promotion. Gannett’s WKYC has named him Director of Digital Media Marketing which by its very name is what his new job will entail. He’s been On-Air Promotion Manager under the one and only MICKI BYRNES, CSD. Mr. Mac is a proud grad of AppState in Boone NC where he also worked in their Sports Department doing videos. Other stops along the way include promo writing and producing at WFMY in Greensboro and Time Warner Adcast. His passion for running must keep the creative juices pumping. A special Well Dunne! to Mac.

Does a Monday start out much better than this: Lewis Black has a new special tonight on The History Channel. No. No it does not. This is the BEST. And a short week to boot. I’ll post when something comes along, but I’m not making any promises.
Kudos to Well Dunne! Talent’s lovely SCARLETT JUNG on her recent project for WKYC, NBC in Cleveland. Thanks to MAC MAHAFFEE and MICKI BYRNES.
